We have never looked forward to a festival as much as this year’s Sziget! Since 1993, one of the most anticipated moments of every year is to cross a small bridge over the Danube in Budapest and enter the Island of Freedom. A world dreamed up almost 30 years ago, where visitors from all over the world can come together in peace, happiness, and love. Where we can live for a week as we would like to live for the rest of the year; a dream state we have created together. A magical island that is inclusive, where everyone is accepted, where everyone is equal, a culturally diverse, open world where we can leave the worries of our everyday life behind. We could not imagine that there would be a year when we would have to miss Sziget. And certainly not that two festivals in a row would be cancelled. But now, we can reunite, in a festival that we intend to bring back as an unmissable experience, with world famous stars, fan favourites, established artists from the previous seasons, and the same diversity of genres that Sziget is known for. We are working to ensure that everyone can enjoy the Island of Freedom’s experience and take it home with them. And we very much hope that in the years to come there will always be an opportunity to relive them. We look forward to being together once again. With friendship, Tamás Kádár and all the organisers of Sziget

Dear Szitizens! Welcome to Budapest. With this passport you can enter the Sziget Festival Republic. „We need a week together. Bring a tent, bring your friends and make new ones.” In 1993, the organizers called the first Students Island the best holiday in the world. Since then, the festival has become the biggest event in the region and an inescapable part of Budapest’s cultural and tourist life. The secret is hard to grasp. Perhaps it is professionalism, perhaps it is spirit, perseverance, faith in success and the talent of the organisers that have made Sziget Festival grow bigger and bigger. For nearly 30 years, this week in August has been the week of true youth. It is a place where everyone who comes can live freely. The hundreds of thousands of people on the island come together, flow with the events, coexist with the exceptional moments. This island is special. It is rare to find a green island suitable for a festival in the middle of a European capital of millions. This magical place is now yours for a week. Budapest is living with Sziget in these days. The COVID-19 epidemic has forced the organisers to take an extended break. Despite the losses, it was a good period to revitalise the precious green spaces and to start to develop the festival area to preserve its natural values. Finally, in 2022, after a two-years, the world-class programme can get back on track and diversity can once again flourish. This passport documents a lifetime of experiences. Enjoy the festival, enjoy Budapest! Karácsony Gergely Mayor of Budapest

Dear Visitors! It would seem to be such a positive and well-meant thing to ask you, to learn from past mistakes, not to return to the pre-pandemic routine of exploiting each other as well as exploiting our planet, to switch our direction toward sustainability, to enjoy ourselves at festivals responsibly, and to take care of our environment the best we can… But you have spent the past almost three years waiting for the First Next Party to start. You’ve been waiting to enjoy an escape from the World (and from Hungary) to the islands of freedom, to escape from epidemic and war, and simply love, celebrate and enjoy life without them! Welcome to Disctrict III.! If you’d like and got the time, come – for a swim in our many public pools; if not on the Sziget, but on Római beach, you can even go for a swim in the Danube at the Capital’s one and only free public beach. As István Csukás wrote: ‘Surely can spare a penny or two And woosh: green waves, and shiny lights: From the City to the Danube’s shore We’re beckoned when season’s here.” Go for a hike: in Budapest’s greenest – and now the most climate-friendly – district offers you an abundance of fun hiking opportunities from the forest hills, via the ‘Mocsáros’ (Swamp) trail, right to the ancient Roman ruins at Aquincum. If you like evening strolls through city streets, start from Fő (Main) square, and visit some of our many cafés, museums, galleries. If you come from Sziget, turn left to get nostalgic in the Krúdy-quarter, turn right and look into the future in Graphisoft park. Or, if we want to express everything we mentioned here, that you can do in one single word, we can borrow it from Péter Esterházy who told us to be: BE HAPPY. Our home Óbuda-Békásmegyer is waiting for you, too. Dr. László Kiss Mayor of Óbuda-Békásmegyer 9
