Dear Szitizens, I would like to warmly welcome you to Sziget, one of the most popular parts of Óbuda. As some Szitizens might know, the island of Sziget is located in a lovely part of Budapest, where the novelty of Sziget Festival meets the beauty of the past. Around Óbuda you will find various ancient ruins, which have been there for almost two thousand years. The island hosts the ruins of the Palace of Hadrian, built by the governor of Aquincum in the 2nd century, and this year we celebrate the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian becoming the Roman Emperor. I truly hope you will have time to look around the “mainland” Óbuda, too! There is something for every Szitizen, discover our ancient ruins, explore the cozy restaurants (and their local gastronomy and wonderful wines!), enjoy a lovely coffee in one of our famous open air cafes, and live the vibrant and yet calm atmphosphere of Óbuda. We all invite you to explore quieter parts of Óbuda, before the party kicks off, after it ended, or even when re-visiting Budapest! The famous Óbuda native Gyula Krúdy used to say: “when guests start to come once, they will come afterwards as well”, and we could not agree more with him.

GREETINGS FROM THE MAYOR OF BUDAPEST

Budapest is thrilling at any time of year, but it is the most vibrant during the summer. Sziget Festival attracts tourists to the Hungarian capital from all around the world, who come in droves and make this colourful metropolis even more bustling. There are few things more refreshing in the intense heat than swimming a little and cooling off in the shade. Budapest is the capital of baths – it is deservedly famous for its swimming pools, lidos and spas, where everyone can find what they are looking for. If you are in the mood for a huge theme park, visit the water kingdom of Aquaworld, with its adrenalinpumping giant slides, a surf pool and a wave pool! If you would rather travel back in time, you should buy a ticket to St. Lukács Medicinal Bath and Swimming Pool. It is considered to have perhaps the most effective healing water. If you prefer other forms of relaxation, you can choose from countless authentic baths and exciting lidos. If you wish to recharge your batteries with a little sightseeing, but your feet are tired from all the partying, just hop on the Castle bus, which will take you to the hidden nooks and crannies of the romantic streets of Buda. If you feel like, you can interrupt your trip at the top of the city at the Fishermen’s Bastion. Enjoy the view! You can hop on and off again twice more! Budapest Tuk-tuks, which offer several different routes, are also perfect for a comfortable sightseeing tour. Explore the city with a package tour provided by the official tourist city card, the Budapest Card!

The Sziget Festival, which is one of Europe’s largest popular music and cultural events, will be hosted by Budapest for the 25th time. The capital of Hungary is proud of its colourful and rich cultural offerings, and the festival, which now has a past of a quarter-century, has a highlighted role in it. Sziget offers a very good occasion for Budapest to show itself to the world again and to prove why it is considered to be the most exciting and most vibrant city in Central-Eastern Europe. Beyond the concerts and the events at Sziget, the guests of the festival should also become acquainted with the attractions and sights of Budapest: the emblematic public buildings and public squares, which are renewed one and all, the unique panorama, which is part of the World Heritage, or our world-famous spas. Have a good time! István Tarlós Mayor of Budapest www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

www.szigetfestival.com

After you have explored Buda, return to busy downtown Pest: visit the Gozsdu Courtyard, Váci Street or the centrally located Erzsébet Square. Akvárium Klub, one of the most significant multi-art centres in Budapest, can be found here, among others. As soon as good weather arrives, the square that surrounds the club is overrun by young people sitting in the grass, drinking spritzer or playing the guitar. Still in the mood for street-art? If you are looking for a place to hang out, visit the ruin pub district. Here, guests can find themselves surrounded by an endless pool of underground artistic creativity: you can choose whether to drink a beer while sitting in a discarded retro car or a bathtub-couch. Lately, the Hungarian capital has been putting itself on the European gastronomy map more and more dominantly; in addition to the wide variety of street-food, hungry wanderers can also buy high-quality dishes of Hungarian cuisine at very attractive prices. There is a Food truck court as well, where a magical atmosphere greets the visitors. The options include everything from barbecue to smoked trout, from vegan cuisine to healthy toasted sandwiches, from a spritzerbus to a gnocchi-van.

Welcome to Óbuda! Balázs Bús Mayor of Óbuda-Békásmegyer

We look forward to seeing you in our city! www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

Folk Dance companies: Turai Tradition and Youth Dance Company Corvinus Dance Company and Transylvanian traditionalist musicians and dancers Bands: Fonó band, Somos band, Tanyád band, Szalonna és Bandája, Babra band, Dűvő band, Fanfara Complexa, Fix Stimm band Professional partner: Hungarian Open Air Museum, Szentendre, Ministry of Agriculture

The Hungarikum Village loves a good old fashion themed party (who doesn’t?) and this year, in honour of Sziget’s 25th birthday, the venue’s theme is “birthdays”! The Hungaricum Village will also celebrate The Hungarian Open Air Museum in Szentendre (Skanzen) 50th anniversary, with a program that you do not want to miss! Szitizens will discover a superb exhibition about the history of the museum, and learn everything about Hungarian birthday and anniversary traditions and customs. Throughout the day, Szitizens will be able to make their own birthday gifts, try Skanzen folk games, and learn traditional – and fundances during the afternoon dance classes. The Hungaricum village is ready to entertain you 24/7! Its wonderful night activities will keep you occupied and happy until sunrise! Welcome a new day while dancing to the beats of traditional Hungarian folk music, which will be brought by various bands, and learn the “Táncház” method, which has been inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. Are you celebrating your birthday at Sziget? Great, don’t forget to stop by the wooden polygonal barn, where every birthday girl and boy will have his or her celebratory traditional dance! www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

walkabouts

11-13 August Mr. Image Theatre (NL): Big Bugs Four huge, lifelike beetles show up in the middle of Sziget: a giant Cockroach, an enormous Lady-bug, a Stag beetle and a Jewel beetle, ready to go on rampage through the festival area, causing excitement and ‘mass-hysteria’ amongst the Szitizens. Performers: Iva Mandick, Petar Mandick, Victor Bottenbley, Mateo Frau, Drew Elston

11-15 August Mister Piano (D) A rolling piano? If you think that’s impossible Mister Piano will prove you wrong! He combines driving and playing music with his special multitasking skills. Mister Piano has a diverse music repertoire from classics to nowadays’ top hits. Don’t miss to an impressive performance, and catch him on the streets of Sziget! Performer: Dennis Volk

13-15 August Teatr KTO (PL): Peregrinus The show depicts a single day in the life of an individual of the 21st century. The contemporary “everyman”, whose life is “suspended” between Home and Work for a corporation, identifies his or her “pathway through life” as a “pathway to work”. The world of the “Pererginus” is a “digital” civilization – sad, terrifying and grotesque, where consumerism turns into a dominant religion. Homo Peregrinus is a formatted human being stripped of emotionality, predictable and bereft of individual characteristics. Artistic director: Jerzy Zoń

Mécanique Vivante photo: Jeremie Bernard

10-14 August Compagnie Albedo (F): Les Tonys You can never foresee danger, but no need to fear, Tony and Tony are here! Two bodyguards, both named Tony, are on a mission to secure the festival and its Szitizens. They have dirty heads, they are a bit stupid, but are well-intentioned boys with a heart of gold. Performers: Stéphane Clément, Fabrice Duval

10-15 August Snuff Puppets (AUS): Human Body Parts Come play with Everybody’s giant body parts. A disembodied Eye, Ear, Mouth, Nose, Hand and Foot sweep up all in their wake. A giant Hand embraces bystanders, a Foot blocks the path... This absurd exploration of the human body celebrates the shared flesh of all humankind. Artistic director: Andy Freer

11-15 August Das Universal Druckluft Orchester (D): Music On Wheels A unique ensemble of mechanical music machines and their musical operator present the most beautiful melodies and swift rhythms. The trained mechanic and tool-maker Peter Till lives in Dresden and has been a freelance musician since 1981. Performer: Peter Till

10-15 August Mécanique Vivante (F): Le Chant des Sirènes A polyphonic orchestra - perched on jalopies, tap-dancing on compressed air - takes us elsewhere, to a journey, where Mécanique Vivante perfects as much in music as in artistry. Dreamy and floating, or funky and foot tapping, this mechanical expedition is a fantasy ship which sails through uncharted seas. Artistic director: Franz Clochard

11-15 August Ooz Band (F) Ooz Band is a crazy brass band consisting of eight adventurers, lost in our world and searching the last element to fix their ship!
