Check-in

From 2016 there is an additional check-in system at Sziget Festival. This will happen at the entrance of the festival, when you are just about to get your pretty wristband. The check-in will ensure the personalization of the wristbands. Your vouchers (with a barcode/QR code) that you’ve received upon purchasing your tickets for Sziget are not personalized (they do not indicate a name), so when you are exchanging your voucher to a wristband our colleague will ask for a valid ID or passport from you, they will scan it and then you will receive your wristband. The personalization is important, because in this way we hope to roll back to those, who would use tickets with bad intentions and we aim to filter those, who are on international arrest warrant list or watch-list. Data scanned from your valid ID or passport will be stored according to the Data Protection Laws of Hungary and the EU.

Message from the Mayor of Budapest This is the 24th time that Budapest hosts Sziget Festival, one of Europe’s biggest, best-known and most respected cultural events, where once again the capital of the Hungarian nation introduces itself. More than 400,000 visitors from over 70 countries are expected to attend this year, thus allowing Budapest to show just why it is considered the most beautiful and exciting metropolis in Central-Eastern Europe – a city that unites. Besides the festival programmes it is also worth checking out the capital’s redeveloped squares, streets and sights, its world-famous historical spas and baths as well as its top leisure park, Margaret Island, featuring one of the finest musical fountains of the continent. Enjoy yourself in our city! István Tarlós Mayor of Budapest Budapest has something of interest for all visitors regardless of what time of the year they come, yet the most dynamic period is still summer. Sziget Festival attracts tourists from all corners of the globe to the Hungarian capital, giving this diverse and multicultural metropolis even more buzz.

There are few more refreshing programmes in the scorching heat than cooling off with a swim. Budapest is famed the world over for its great swimming pools and strands, where everyone can find their own perfect spot. If you are interested in huge adventure parks, head for Aquaworld and its adrenalinpumping mega-slides, surf and wave pools! There again, if you prefer going back in time, get a ticket for the Rudas Thermal Bath and Swimming Pool! Built nearly 500 years ago at the time of the Ottoman occupation, its speciality is that the thermal section can be used by men and women separately during the week, but there is mixed bathing at the weekend. www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

Recently the Hungarian capital has gained an increasing reputation for being a hub for excellent European gastronomy: besides trying out the huge variety of street food on offer, the hungry traveller should also sample superb local cuisine in quality surroundings at a reasonable price. Generally there are queues to get in to the Pesti Disznó (Pest Pig) Bistro on Király Street, but it is worth the wait. The regularly changing menu features such mouth-watering delicacies as venison ragout with thyme, Hungarian goose liver terrine and Mangalica pork burger. This is a great location anyway, because life is at its most frenetic in the patch marked out by Gozsdu Courtyard – Erzsébet Square – Váci Street. Here, for instance, one will come across the Akvárium Club, one of Budapest’s leading multi-arts hubs, while Erzsébet Square where the club is based is always packed with guitar-strumming, chatting young people sitting out on the grass as soon as the weather warms up. In the spirit of street-art and in search of a little ‘chill’, the best idea is to visit one of the ruin pubs that have become an icon of Budapest. Visitors are faced with an unlimited source of underground creativity: decide whether you would prefer to sip a beer in a patched up retro car or on a bath-sofa.

Photos: budapestinfo.hu

No surprise to see that tourists are often to be found in these surreal surroundings, making it a great place to meet with other travellers and swap stories. Another Hungaricum also enjoys considerable popularity, but this one is not for the fainthearted: in Budapest alone there are nearly 100 exit rooms, the biggest of them is BUNKERGAME, where the totally fearless can try to work their way out of an original World War 2 bunker.

dan panaitescu

main stage 10 august

Goodbye, Dan!

wednesday

Dan Panaitescu was our colleague and friend, one of the main figures of Sziget Cultural Management from the very beginning. He was our booking manager, who booked all those great artists playing on the Sziget Main Stage. Unfortunately Dan cannot be with us at Sziget as he lost his life in a tragic car accident on 15th July. We will always remember him in our hearts and we would like to dedicate the Main Stage, the stage he booked and managed for years, to him by naming it after him. We miss you, Dan! Rest in peace and organize great parties up there to Lemmy, Prince, David Bowie and all the others!

Hungarikum village GAMES & TOYS

55

10-16 august

10-11 August 20.00-24.00

The Hungarikum Village will once again conjure the Hungarian countryside to the Island of Freedom, so Szitizens can get a taste of Hungarian tradition and virtue. The venue is located in a special, wooden, polygonal „cifra” barn, where many activities, fun and dancing will take place. This year’s theme is the „game”: playful aspects of Hungarian folk art will be presented here when it comes to dancing, singing, arts and craft, used materials and much more. Find the child in you! Mechanical puzzles, humming top, live millgame and of course stilt walking are waiting for you. In the tent of the Hungarian Open Air Museum (Szentendre) you can find an exhibition of old and not so old photos of games and toys played in the past hundred years. Traditionally the evenings will close with all-night dance get-togethers, where anyone can try out Hungarian dances and get a taste of the „Táncház” method, which has been inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. Traditional dance companies from Transylvania will also join this year, showing their own dances and traditional clothes.

TRANSE EXPRESS (F): MÙ

Transe Express is creating magical and imaginative large-scale shows in unconventional spaces. The company was founded in 1982 by Brigitte Burdin and Gilles Rhode. They use all kinds of artistic media to express themselves: music, visual arts, circus skills, fire, literature, metallurgy, opera, rock, dance and of course theatre. Each of these are a cornerstone of their philosophy to perform show „with no boundaries”. Their productions are unique adventures that transform cities and invite the public to escape their everyday reality. To Sziget, Transe Express is arriving with their new performance called MÙ, which is a large-scale aerial performance, monumental and bright, where music, images, physically and technical prowess will make your heart beat faster! The trip from the Earth to the Moon follows the footsteps of the giant Jules Verne. You will go through all states, transfigured by the music of stamen instruments from a land anemone and sounds of a star in a perpetual motion. www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

Beware, the musicians of the Kraken Orchestra furrow the asphalt seas in search of good mood! Factory for extraordinary, populated with dream castles and www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

left an imprint on our perception of technical progress, tying it with a fear of mass destruction. In this context, the era of the steam appears to us as an era of innocence, joyful, creative fascination with the possibilities offered by technical inventions. 49
