Dear Szitizens, in the name of the whole Sziget crew, I would like to welcome you to the Island of Freedom! I am proud to announce that we are hosting the most iconic line-up in Sziget history, bringing you a wide range of programs throughout the week. Don’t just stick to the Main Stage, it is well worth checking out what is going on at the other music venues and stages as well. There are countless special artists performing at Sziget: bands, artists and DJs who are already world-known or are heading that way. It’s important to highlight that Sziget – the biggest tourist attraction of Hungary – is not just about music, but also is a cultural celebration of all art forms. From circus, to theatre, to fine arts, all art forms are represented on the island. There are so many things to do besides going to the concerts, so make the most of your week and dive head first into this cultural whirlwind. Besides our countless programs, please let me emphasize the importance of the messages of our Love Revolution campaign, which was launched last year. We are hosting incredibly influential guests this year on the Main Stage such as Dr. Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace and environmentalist, Emi Mahmoud, poet, activist and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and, through a video message, Al Gore, former U.S. Vice President and Founder of The Climate Reality Project. Between sets on the Main Stage, you can see the performance called The Arrow by a Canadian-American duo with the motto: All love is equal. Through their dance Swiss dancers, Dakota and Nadia will stand for human rights, while Drew Dollaz, American street dancer, will raise awareness regarding domestic violence. Throughout the island you will see the concept of Love Revolution, for instance at the NGO Island or Magic Mirror. Lastly, we are doing everything in our power this year to reduce our ecological footprint. We ask you to support our goal by becoming familiar with the Green Sziget campaign and learning about our policy regarding waste management, straws, tents, and recycling so our island can stay beautiful for years to come and so we can protect our environment. I truly hope that during the non-stop party we can draw your attention to problems that can only be solved if we all work together. I would like to believe that the outside world can be similar to the world at Sziget: inclusive, tolerant, peaceful, and a happy place. Have fun on the Island of Freedom! Yours truly, Tamás Kádár CEO www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

DEAR VISITORS,

BUDAPEST Every year Sziget Festival attracts tourists to the Hungarian capital from all around the world. These visitors who come in the masses make this colourful metropolis even more lively. Discover it for yourself! In the intense summer heat, there are few things more refreshing than taking a swim and cooling off in the shade. Budapest is the city of baths – it is rightfully famous for its swimming pools, lidos and spas, where everyone can find what they are looking for. If you are in the mood for excitement and adventure, visit the water kingdom of Aquaworld. With its giant slides, surf pool and wave pool, you’ll be sure to get your fix of adrenaline! If you would rather be transported back to the olden days, visit St. Lukács Medicinal Bath and Swimming Pool! These are just two options you can choose from countless authentic baths and exciting lidos located in the area. Are you a game lover? Visit the Pinball Museum and play in a retro atmosphere. To put your brain to the test, try one of the city’s escape rooms. We recommend Mindquest or Timetrap.

Budapest warmly welcomes the visitors of Sziget Festival for the 27th time! Óbuda Island will accommodate one of the biggest and most prestigious music and cultural events in Europe again for several days. The Hungarian capital demonstrates once again why it is considered a bustling metropolis. The festival has a wide range of exciting activities to offer, but – since our city is truly one of a kind – I encourage every guest to use their time here to also see the sights of Budapest. Discover the frequently renewed public areas, the emblematic buildings, the historical thermal baths or the capital’s most popular recreational park, Margaret Island. Budapest is a safe and lively city: aside from its traditional tourist attractions, it is characterised by a vibrant atmosphere, diversity and creativity. Have a great time and hope to have you back soon! István Tarlós Mayor of Budapest www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

In Buda, you can even go underground: Pálvölgyi and Szemlő-hegyi caves await you with a hidden side of the city. If you wish to recharge your batteries with a little sightseeing, but your feet are tired from all the partying, just hop on the Castle bus, which will take you into the hidden nooks and crannies of Buda’s romantic streets. If you feel like it, you can take a break at the top of the city at the Fisherman’s Bastion. Enjoy the view! Once you are there, use your Budapest Card Plus to enter the lavish Matthias Church free of charge. If you are a nature lover, try the Zugliget Chairlift and enjoy the magnificent view for free with your official city pass. Discover the city with the help of the Budapest Card experience package! You will enjoy free public transportation as well as more than 30 free experiences and nearly 100 services at reduced rates!

Dear Szitizens, Budapest is a city full of experiences and Northern-Buda, with its riverside and nature, is one of the most popular parts of our capital. I warmly welcome you here to the Hajógyári-island at Óbuda. This special location, where hundreds of thousands of you visit every year, is truly a community space not just during the festival but during the rest of the year as well: it’s perfect for those walking with their dogs, ideal for runners and a great place for families to relax and play. For us this place is valuable for several reasons so we do everything we can to take good care of the nature and to make it suitable for different sports and recreational programs. The island however is not only a recreational park, but a piece of history left from ancient ancestors as well. Long ago, this was the home of Roman citizens and soldiers. You can still find the remaining stones of the Palace of Hadrian, built in the Second Century by the governor of Aquincum. We would like to keep this space as beautiful as it is now, so we make sure that our actions preserve nature and we ask you to do the same. The Danube is a very important element of Sziget Festival, but it is important to be cautious as it can also be a source of danger. To forever remember your time at the festival as a wonderful memory, make sure you always have sound judgement and act accordingly.

Once you have explored Buda, make your way back to the bustling downtown Pest: visit the Gozsdu Courtyard, Váci Street or the centrally located Erzsébet Square. Still in the mood for more? Check out the ruin pub district, if you are looking for a place to hang out and see expressive street art. Here, guests will find themselves surrounded by endless underground artistic creativity. Budapest is quickly earning its spot on the European gastronomy map – don’t hesitate to choose from the wide selection of quality restaurants where Budapest Card holders receive discounts. You can also visit the Pálinka Museum, which offers a gift aperitif, or enter the exciting House of Unicum at a discounted price with your card. the c

wait s

you!

I hope that you will have a great time and that you will also explore Óbuda! When it comes to the true value of this weeklong festival and its many joyful events, perhaps Hungarian author Gyula Krúdy said it best: “Sometimes, there are stars in our eyes... And those sparkling stars, they bring true happiness.” Welcome to Óbuda! Balázs Bús Mayor of Óbuda-Békásmegyer www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

50 HUNGARIKUM Village

Folk dance companies: Turai Tradition and Youth Dance Company, Corvinus Dance Company and Transylvanian traditionalist musicians and dancers Bands: Szalonna és Bandája, Fanfara Complexa, Poklade, Fonó band, Berka, Mikók Attila és a Banda, Jobbágy Balázs és a Banda. Professional partners: Hungarian Open Air Museum, Szentendre

Colourful traditions

The Hungarikum Village will bring Hungarian culture to Sziget once again showcasing Hungarian traditions, virtues, foods and drinks. This year you can learn more about these colourful traditions even beyond the border. This journey will involve folk artists from Küküllő, gypsy artists from the Upper Tisza Region, traditions from Kalotaszeg and customs of the Palóc people. In the tent of the Hungarian Open Air Museum from Szentendre, you can try your hand at arts and craft, special Skanzen folk games and in the afternoons you can learn Hungarian folk dances. During the evenings everyone can show off the moves that they learnt earlier at the dance house. Music is brought by the very best of Hungarian folk bands.

Luminarium – Daedalum sponsored by Jana

EVERY DAY 12:00-01:00

Luminarium, designed by the Architects of Air from England, is back at Sziget and ready to fascinate you with a new world of wonders. Their installation this year, called Daedalum, debuts at Sziget for the first time which makes it even more special. Daedalum was named after Dedalus, the father of Ikarus, who was the architect of The Minoan Labyrinth. The installation itself is a labyrinth of 19 egg-shaped domes. Roaming inside, you can discover two unique features. One is a wonderful rainbow-colored tree and the other one is a spacious hall inspired by the Roman Pantheon. www.facebook.com/szigetfestival

BEFORE I DIE

52

The Before I Die wall is one of the most wellknown street art projects by Candy Chang (USA-TWN), the internationally acknowledged American designer/artist. The aim of the project is to encourage community building by overcoming the boundaries of individual isolation. Through this an opportunity has been created for Szitizens to share their thoughts. You are also invited to leave small video-messages about your wishes and plans. These will be edited and displayed on two movie screens after hours. This futuristic visual in combination with lights, symbolizing the universal flow of messages, will create a spectacular view, where the written and told confessions will speak to the universe!

EVERY DAY 12:00-22:00
