JOHNNY CASH’S IMPACT ON

MUSIC INDUSTRY

BY TIONGE JOHNSON Johnny Cash influenced a wide range of musicians from many genres during and after his lifetime.

Following his death, musicians inspired by him expressed through special tributes their grief at losing such an important icon in American music. In 1999, Turner Network Television (TNT) produced and released an All-Star Tribute to Johnny Cash, a tribute concert of his songs performed by various big name musicians. Among those musicians were Sheryl Crow, U2, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Lyle Lovett. Even pop singers like former NSYNC member Justin 20

Timberlake shared their own personal tributes to Cash. Timberlake praised the singer/songwriter in an acceptance speech at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Male Video Award. The pop star said the award should have gone to Cash, whose video clip of a cover of the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt” garnered six nominations.

“Johnny Cash was the champion of the voiceless, the underdogs, and the downtrodden. He was also something of a holy terror, like Abraham Lincoln with a wild side. He represented the best of America.’’ -Kris Kristofferson. by rappers and DJ’s, including rapper Snoop Dogg–illustrate how all-encompassing and widespread his influence was for artists outside of the country music scene. Something about Cash’s music

struck a chord with other musicians, including Bob Dylan, Bono from U2, and Bruce Springsteen.

Many of these performers wrote tribute songs for Cash or worked with him

at some point in their careers. “The Wanderer”, the tenth and final track from U2’s 1993 studio album Zooropa, featured Bono on lead vocals with Cash as a supporting artist. The Irish rocker per-

“He showed me his house, his ranch, his zoo in Nashville, his faith, his musicianship. He was more than wise. In a garden full of weeds - the oak tree.” -Bono formed “The Wanderer” live with Cash at the Nevada County fairgrounds in Grass Valley, California in 1993.

After Cash passed away, U2 performed the song once more during a television special dedicated to Cash entitled I Walk the Line: A Night of Johnny Cash. “The Wanderer” was also included in the Cash compilations The Essential Johnny Cash and The Legend of Johnny Cash, and used as the intermission song during U2’s Innocence and Experience Tour in 2015.

Cash directly inspired and helped nurture the careers of those he sang or performed with. Before Dylan and Cash even met, they were fans of each other’s work. In Cash: The Autobiography, Cash said he wrote Dylan a letter telling him how much of a fan he was and Dylan immediately wrote back saying he’d been following Cash’s music since “I Walk the Line”. Their growing admiration for one another soon turned into a correspondence between the two musicians, and led to them recording Nashville Skyline in a two-

day session at Columbia studios in Nashville, Tennessee in 1969. Dylan and Cash made fifteen songs together, one or two for possible use on the new album and the rest for a possible jointCash-Dylan LP. Dylan explained in an interview with Rolling Stone that Cash’s influence and friendship helped his career take off. “Listen to him, and he will always bring you to your senses,” Dylan said.

Springsteen was drawn to Cash’s classical rock music as well as some of

Cash’s lyrical themes in his songs. A song entitled “Johnny 99” on Springsteen’s Nebraska album (released in 1982) is about an autoworker who was laid off in Mahwah, New Jersey. Though never released as an official single, “Johnny 99” garnered enough album oriented rock airplay to reach #50 on the U.S Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. “Johnny 99” was also used as the title name for an album Cash recorded in 1983. Springsteen and Cash both came from humble beginnings

and incorporate the struggles of the American laborer in their songs.

Springsteen writes about poverty and unemployment in “Johnny 99”, which are similar themes in Cash’s “Oney”. “Johnny 99” is in fact based on the real life closing of the Ford Motor Company plant in the 1980s.

From rock stars, country singers, and even rappers and pop stars, it is apparent that Cash has and will continue to leave a lasting impact on musicians young and old.

BY TIONGE JOHNSON Since his first recordings in 1955, Johnny Cash became an icon in American music. In 1980, he was the youngest living person chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame and performed everywhere from Folsom State Prison (the inspiration for “Folsom Prison Blues”) to the White House. His lyrics connect deeply to the poverty and deprivation of country life in the Great Depression, through

the uncertainty of World War II, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, and the victories of adulation and the detriments of addiction. In a collection of poems compiled and edited by Paul Muldoon, Forever Words: The Unknown Poems, Cash’s talent in not only songwriting but also American literature is discovered. Experiences of survival and of love and loss are themes Cash beautifully illustrates in his writing.

Evan J. Marshall (Musician/Ensemble, Fiddle) is an internationally renowned fiddler and mandolin virtuoso, and is widely regarded as the world’s premier solo performer on mandolin in Duo-Style. Stuart Plymesser (Production Stage Manager) is in his 20 th season at Syracuse Stage where he has stage managed more than 60 plays, musicals, and special events, working with such talents as Olympia Dukakis, Frank Langella, Elizabeth Franz, and Phylicia Rashad. Stuart has worked at numerous regional theatres around the country and in Cape Town, South Africa, and has toured nationally. Locally, he has also stage managed events for Syracuse Fashion Week. In addition, Stuart is adjunct faculty for Syracuse University’s Department of Drama and has been a guest speaker/lecturer at Ithaca College, Wells College, SUNY Oswego, and the Zabalaza Festival in Cape Town. Stuart is a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers, as well as the United States Aikido Federation.

Jonathan Herter (Sound Designer) serves as resident sound designer for his twentieth season at Syracuse Stage and the Syracuse University Department of Drama. Mr. Herter has designed for Indiana Repertory

JOHNNY CASH Johnny Cash was born and raised in Arkansas, moving to Dyess when he was three. By the time he was 12 years old, he had begun writing his own songs. While he was in high school, he sang on the Arkansas radio station KLCN. Cash graduated from high school in 1950, moving to Detroit to work in an auto factory for a brief while. With the outbreak of the Korean War, he enlisted in the Air Force. While he was in the Air Force, Cash bought his first guitar and taught himself to play. He began writing songs in earnest, including “Folsom Prison Blues”. Cash left the Air Force in 1954 and moved to Memphis, where he took a radio-announcing course at a broadcasting school on the GI Bill. During the evenings, he played country music in a trio that also consisted of guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant. The trio occasionally played for free on a local radio station, KWEM, and tried to secure gigs and an audition at Sun records. Cash finally landed an audition with Sun Records and its founder, Sam Phillips, in 1955. Initially, Cash presented himself as a gospel singer, but Phillips turned him down.

Phillips asked him to come back with something more commercial, so Cash returned with “Hey Porter”, which immediately caught Phillips’ ear. Soon, Cash released “Cry Cry Cry”/“Hey Porter” as his debut single for Sun Re-

cords. “Cry Cry Cry” became a success upon its release in 1955, entering the country charts at number 14 and leading to a spot on The Louisiana Hayride, where he stayed for nearly a year. “Folsom Prison Blues”, reached the country Top Five in early 1956 and its follow-up, “I Walk the Line”, was number one for six weeks and crossed over into the pop Top 20. Cash had an equally successful year in 1957, scoring several country hits including the Top 15 “Give My Love to Rose”. Cash also made his Grand Ole Opry debut that year, appearing all in black where the other performers were decked out in flamboyant, rhinestone-studded outfits. As a result of this, he eventually earned the nickname “The Man in Black”. Cash’s success continued to roll throughout 1958, as he earned his biggest hit, “Ballad of a Teenage Queen” (number one for ten weeks), as well as another number one single, “Guess Things Happen That Way”. He was one of country music’s biggest stars of the ‘50s and ‘60s, scoring well over 100 hits. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn’t sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country.

C R E AT I V E T E A M Richard Maltby, Jr. (Creator, Adaptation) includes among his Broadway credits Ain’t Misbehavin’, which

he conceived and directed (1978 Tony Award, New York Drama Critics Award, Outer Critics Award, and

Mr. Maltby was the lyricist for Miss Saigon (Evening Standard Award 1990, Tony nomination for Best Score 1991), as well as the director and co-lyricist of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song & Dance in 1986 (Tony Award for star Bernadette Peters). Along with composer David Shire, Mr. Maltby was the director and lyricist for Big in 1996 (Tony Award nomination for Best Score). Off-Broadway, he was the director and lyricist for Starting Here, Starting New in 1977 (Grammy Award nomination) and Closer Than Ever in 1989 (Outer Critics Circle Awards: Best Musical, Best Score).

Jason Edwards (Adaptation, Original Production Director) appeared at Arizona Theatre Company as Woody Guthrie in Woodie Guthrie’s American Song in the 201011 Season. As guest director, his work has been seen in theatres across the United States including Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Denver Center Theatre, Actors’ Theatre of Louisville, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Arkansas Repertory, Florida Studio Theatre, Clarence Brown Theatre, La Mirada Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Chicago’s Marriott Theatre, Totem Pole Playhouse, Casa Mañana Theatre, Virginia Stage Company, Barter Theatre, Maine State Music Theatre, FCLO Music Theatre, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Flat Rock Playhouse, and Riverside Theatre, among others. On Broadway, Mr. Edwards starred in Ring of Fire and is featured on the original cast recording. William Meade (Concept) began his career as a musician. He has been a featured soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Zurich Philharmonic, Prague Philiharmonic, and Jacksonville Symphony. He has produced concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe with artists ranging from Arlo Guthrie to BB King. Television credits include: The Miss America Pageant, The Superbowl Half Time Show, Sex and the City, Love Monkey, and Sesame Street. On Broadway, he has been involved with more than 50 musicals. William is a Grammy-nominated record producer with a wide range of theatrical releases to his credit, from Hello, Dolly! with Carol Channing to Elegies with William Finn.

Denise has served as director/choreographer of many Lifeway DVD’s including Worship Kidstyle, Made for Praise, VBS, and numerous children’s musicals. She has appeared with Lee Greenwood, Roy Acuff, Porter Wagoner, Jeannie Seely, and Pam Tillis,

and worked with Celine Dion by directing the children’s choir for her national tour. Denise is a session singer for Gary Musick Productions and has appeared as a featured singer/dancer for Celebrity Cruise Lines. She is a featured vocalist for The Craig Duncan Orchestra and The Nashville Blue Tones. In her latest project, she portrayed Patsy Cline in Lovesick Blues. She has served as adjunct professor at Belmont University teaching Country Music Styles and is a vocal coach at The School of Fine Arts in Hendersonville, Tennessee.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert M. Hupp is in his first season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. Prior to coming to Central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath.

In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind, and the premieres of the Bent-

ley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the year by the Arkansas Arts Council.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Jill A. Anderson arrived at Syracuse Stage in July, 2016, and is delighted to serve as managing director. Jill is responsible for Stage’s nearly $6 million operating budget and has oversight of fundraising, marketing, and operational matters within the organization. Prior to joining Stage, Jill spent a decade as general manager at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT. During her tenure, the O’Neill completed a $7 million capital campaign and campus expansion, doubled its operating budget, and was honored with a 2015 National Medal of Arts and the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Under the O’Neill’s aegis,

Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held in Hiiumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington DC’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. Jill has also served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards and participated in mentoring programs for high school and college students, including the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill is a proud cheesehead, hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin. She and her husband Dave Anderson, along with their daughter, look forward to calling Central New York home for years to come.

A S S O C I AT E A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R Kyle Bass previously served as resident dramaturg and worked on many Syracuse Stage productions, including The Christians, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Piano Lesson, Scorched, The Whipping Man, The Glass Menagerie, Moby Dick, The Brothers Size, Caroline, or Change, Fences, The Price, Little Women, and The Diary of Anne Frank. Kyle worked closely with Ping Chong on the creation of Tales from the Salt City and is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City.

Most recently, Kyle composed the script for Separated, a documentary theatre piece based on interviews with military veterans enrolled at Syracuse University, which was presented by Syracuse Stage in January, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author of the screenplay for the film Day of Days, which stars award-winning veteran actor Tom Skerritt and will be release by Broad Green Pictures in 2017.

He is a two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, for fiction in 1998 and the 2010 fellowship in playwriting, a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and a Pushcart Prize nominee. His stage plays include Tender Rain and

Bleecker Street and his one-man play Carver at Tuskegee, which was produced in Syracuse Stage’s BackStory! series. Kyle is currently writing a new play titled Possessing Harriet, which was commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association and developed through the Kitchen Theatre Company’s New Play Development Workshop at Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. He is also writing the screenplay adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcey Steinke. Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, and was presented at Yale Repertory Theatre. Kyle’s writing has appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing and he has been a guest on National Public Radio discussing race in American theatre. Kyle teaches in the MFA Creative Writing program at Goddard College. He also teaches playwriting at Syracuse University, Colgate University, and Hobart & William Smith Colleges and serves as Drama Editor for Stone Canoe. He holds an MFA in Playwriting from Goddard College and is a proud member of the Dramatist Guild of America.

Syracuse Stage is a member of The League of Resident Theatres (LORT), the largest professional theatre association in the country. America’s leading actors, directors and designers work and/or have worked at Stage including: Tony Award-winners Lillias White, Chuck Cooper, and Elizabeth Franz, Emmy recipient Jean Stapleton, Sam Waterston, John Cullum, James Whitmore, Ben Gazzara, and Ping Chong.

IN THE COMMUNITY An important aspect of the Syracuse Stage mission is to be an active partner and resource in the Central New York community. Each season Syracuse Stage is pleased to partner with a diverse group of community organizations in sponsoring and facilitating various programs, benefits, and events. BEEPERS AND CELL PHONES For the actors’ safety and in consideration of the audience please turn off all cell phones; check your beeper and leave your seat number with an usher at the Coat Room prior to the performance. They will monitor your beeper and notify you if there is an emergency.

FIRE NOTICE The exit indicated by a red sign nearest the seat you occupy is the shortest route to the street. In the event of an emergency, walk to that exit and follow the house staff’s directions.
