Rober t Hupp

Rober t Hupp is in his sixth season as ar tistic direc tor of Syracuse Stage. He recently direc ted Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Of f, Next to Normal,and The Three Musketeersfor Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Rober t spent seventeen seasons as the producing ar tistic direc tor of Arkansas Reper tor y Theatre in Little Rock. He direc ted over 30 produc tions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamletto Les Miserablesto The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Rober t direc ted the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifebloodand Wolfpitfor the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also ser ved for nine seasons as the ar tistic direc tor of the Obie Awardwinning Jean Coc teau Reper tor y. At the Coc teau, Rober t’s direc ting credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Coc teau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courageand Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria.He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College. Rober t ser ved as vice president of the Board of Direc tors of the Theatre Communications Group and has ser ved on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Ar ts, National Endowment for the Ar ts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Ar ts, and the New York City Depar tment of Cultural Af fairs. While in Arkansas, Rober t was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Ar tist of the year by the Arkansas Ar ts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and t wo cats.
