Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1917, Lillian Slutzker was a survivor. After fleeing Nazi control for England, she met her husband at a USO dance and later returned to his hometown of Rome, New York.

She dedicated her life to bettering her community. The foundation’s purpose is to carry on her incredible legacy and fulfill her passion for Judaism, education, the arts, and enriching the community.
The Slutzker Family Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with Syracuse Stage as a season sponsor, including the show Espejos: Clean featuring women who, like Lillian, faced adversity yet pushed ahead.

        LETTER FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR
          DEAR FRIENDS,
Thanks for joining us for Espejos: Clean here at Syracuse Stage! This beautiful play is one we’ve been looking forward to all season, and we’re so glad to share it with you as our first offering in 2023.
In giving us an intimate view of what could easily have been a missed human connection, Espejos: Clean reminds us just how interwoven all our lives are. Regardless of language, and regardless of whether we seek or recognize those moments of connection, we are undeniably people of community, and in communities. What does this mean for us, for Syracuse Stage, in this community? It means that we will continue to find ways in which our work – onstage and off – reflects and invites our neighbors into community, and into conversation.
We’re grateful to our season sponsors, production sponsors, and media sponsors (check them out on pages 14 and 15!) for helping fuel this work, and to our community partners at La Casita Cultural Center for helping bring new conversations to life. In keeping with La Casita’s mission to bridge the Hispanic communities of Syracuse University and those of Central New York, we’re delighted to collaborate with our neighbors in the Near Westside. Special thanks to the Syracuse University Humanities Center for their ongoing support, and we hope you’ll join us for events at Stage and at La Casita on Sunday, February 19.
Additionally, we’re thrilled that playwright Christine Quintana has been able to spend time in Syracuse to be part of the play’s East Coast Premiere and for a reading from her new play El Terremoto. Syracuse Stage continues to be a home for artists and for the development of new work, and we’re proud to have Christine with us!
Finally, we’re putting the finishing touches on plans for 2023 – 2024! We look forward to sharing that news this spring, and to celebrating 50 years of Syracuse Stage with you next season!
          With appreciation,
          Jill Anderson Managing Director

          MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA GERENCIAL
          ESTIMADOS AMIGOS,
          Jill Anderson Directora gerente

Translation isn’t simple. It’s interpretation. There’s what a sentence says, what it means, and how it feels. There are many points of departure and moments of transformation. And the truth: the translation will never truly replicate the original. The sentence was something – and now it’s something else.
Paula (translator and adaptor) and I, over years of emails and WhatsApp voice memos and GoogleDocs, have worked together to articulate the inner worlds of Adriana and Sarah and bring them to life in two languages. Paula, a consummate translator, is fluent in both. Whereas my intermediate Spanish gives me facility to understand what a sentence says, but not always what it means. It’s an exercise in trust. And then we face the inherent cultural inheritances of language – “I’m sorry,” the hallmark Canadian phrase which tumbles from Sarah’s lips dozens of times in the script, translates to “ lo siento” – which translates back to “I feel you. It moves me.” Something, into something else.
Every interaction we have with one another is an act of translation. The herculean task of answering
the question “how are you?” The subtext we interpret when someone answers “I’m fine.” The act of presenting ourselves to one another, and the ways in which we interpret and understand each other, is an immense act of trust. The trust to be understood, and to understand, knowing there will always be something lost in translation even if we’re speaking the same language, about the same things. What I mean when I say to you, “I’m glad you’re here” and “thank you for coming” is as much your interpretation as my intention. But I trust you.

Me conmueve”.
I trust you.

CREATING THE WORLD OF ESPEJOS: CLEAN
“The set is inspired by the playfullness and versatility inside the architecture of the pools at the resorts and the presence of water serves as the vehicle for transformation.”
“I often think of painting, as if each instrument is like a hue, each note a different shade... and I keep thinking of the way tanning oil pollutes water in beautiful and unsettling ways.”
“The translucency of Sarah’s button down shirt and the shimmer and reflection from Adriana’s sequined dress are both ways that I wanted to have the costumes suggest the presence of water onstage.”

“Vivid environments inspired by the beautiful architecture and rich culture of Mexico... functional locations intertwined with the beauty of the text and bursts of magical realism.”
          – Lisa Renkel, Projection Designer

          ABOUT SYRACUSE STAGE
Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors, and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers, and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

The Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation is proud to be a sponsor of the arts in Central New York. We recognize the deep importance live theatre plays in shaping the cultural and social vitality of our community. In these challenging times, theatre brings us together to be inspired and celebrate the richness of the human experience. We are delighted to continue to support Syracuse Stage and this very special production of Espejos: Clean.
