Thank you for joining us for our holiday production of Elf The Musical.

We’re very glad you’ve joined us for this fun, family musical. Like many of you, the movie version of Elf is a part of the holiday tradition at my house. It joins It’s a Wonderful Life and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as mustsee movies when our kids come home for the holidays. Of course, the movie isn’t a musical, but the stage version embraces the fun of the film and does it one better by wrapping the experience in song and dance that feels just right.

I think it’s the perfect recipe for getting us all in the holiday spirit.

ELF THE MUSI CAL

SCENIC DESIGN Scenic designer Czerton Lim found inspiration in two ideas: the art of gift giving and the transformative property of snow. The play begins with a gift of a snow globe and is filled with little moments of giving throughout. For that far away land New York City, Lim envisions a very composed, fantastic, and fictive image of the holiday season as celebrated in Macy’s window displays.

The design also references iconic New York holiday locales such as the ice rink at Rockefeller Center,

Central Park and Tavern on the Green, and the Empire State Building.

"We see the world through Buddy's eyes as if for the first time, even if we the audience have already seen and experienced these iconic places more than once.

To Buddy, these places and the people around him are all magical and wonderful, as wonderful and magical as his beloved North Pole, and eventually, that joy and wonder affect even the most cynical people around him."

COSTUME DESIGN There are approximately 130 costumes in Elf The Musical. For Buddy and the North Pole elves, costume designer Jessica Ford wanted to ground their look in historical research so that they were fanciful and fun without looking too much like the original production. The designs are based on Victorian silhouettes; a time before children’s clothing was differentiated from what the adults were wearing.

IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS? Real Santa, fake Santa—is there a Santa? Perhaps the most famous response to this question appeared in the New York Sun in an unsigned editorial on Sept. 21, 1897. Written by veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church, the response to a letter from Virginia O'Hanlon has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps. The writing belongs to an earlier time; the perspective is worth revisiting.

DEAR EDITOR: I am eight years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?

It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eter-

Not believe in Santa Claus!

You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus.

The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see.

Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever.

A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

She is a senior musical theater major from Voorhees, NJ. This past summer Michelle was a part of The Glimmerglass Festival and played Estella (u/s, perf. Graziella and Consuelo) in West Side Story and played the Cricket in the opera of The Cunning Little Vixen. At the Department of Drama, Michelle recently played Jack’s Mother in the production of Into the Woods (mainstage), Alba in The House of the Spirits (mainstage), was a part of the ensemble in Failure: A Love Story (Loft Theater), and was seen as the Exotic in Le Diable Amoureux (Loft Theater). Michelle was also a part of Jeff Whiting’s workshop of Fly More Than You Fall (Loft Theater). Happy Holidays!

She also created world premiere performances as Mistress Hibbins in A Scarlet Letter, Olga Knipper in To Chekhov With Love, and Ana in Who Killed Pablo Neruda? at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She’s performed in almost all of Shakespeare’s canon with The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Folger Theatre, Shakespeare & Company, Virginia Shakespeare Festival, and the American Shakespeare Center where she acted with the Blackfriars Playhouse Resident Company as Lady Macbeth, Emilia in Othello, and Phoebe in As You Like It. Celia has also played Kate and Petruchio in separate productions of The Taming of the Shrew at Shakespeare & Company, in which she was named most outstanding actress of the Berkshires twice those seasons. Chaz Rose (Macy’s Manager, u/s Walter) is thrilled to be returning to Syracuse Stage. He was last seen here as Porthos in The Three Musketeers. His off-Broadway credits include Black Angels Over Tuskegee and She Like Girls (GLAAD Award winner). Chaz produced and appeared in the film Writer’s Block, starring Bryan Cranston. Seth Pagliaroli (Michael) is proud to be playing Michael in Elf The Musical. This is his first production with Syracuse Stage. He has been acting for two years. His first production was The Music Man with the Baldwinsville Theater Guild, as a River City Kid. He has loved theater ever since.

He has played Cat in the Hat in Seussical the Musical at Riley elementary school and Narrator in the Oswego Children’s Theater production of 101 Dalmatians. His music teacher, Ms. Ceara Windhausen, encouraged him to pursue acting. He is a 6th grader at Charles E. Riley Elementary School.

When not on stage he loves singing in honor choir, playing drums, trombone, and baseball. He lives at home with his Dad, Mom, and sisters.

Last season he was the associate music director for The Wizard of Oz. He serves as assistant music director and a voice teacher for the Department of Drama at Syracuse University where he recently music directed Little Shop of Horrors as well as serving as the assistant music director for Into the Woods and Crazy For You. This coming spring he will be working on the department’s production of Wild Party. He recently performed in Rochester Lyric Opera’s production of You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow and has composed incidental music for Rochester’s Screen Plays production of Cat’s Meow.

C R E AT O R S Thomas Meehan (Book) received the Tony Award for co-writing the book for The Producers in 2001 and in 2003 for co-writing the book for Hairspray. He received his first Tony Award in 1977 for writing the book of Annie, which was his first Broadway show, and has written the books for the musicals Rocky, Elf the Musical, Cry-Baby, Young Frankenstein, Chaplin, Bombay Dreams, I Remember Mama, Ain’t Broadway Grand and Annie Warbucks. In addition, he was a long-time contributor of humor to The New Yorker, an Emmy-Award winning writer of television comedy, and a collaborator on a number of screenplays, including Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs and To Be Or Not To Be. Meehan was also a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild. He and his wife, Carolyn, divided their time between a home in Nantucket

and an apartment in Greenwich Village, near which, on Hudson Street, she owned and presided over the longrunning and near-legendary children’s store Peanut Butter & Jane. Meehan passed away in August 2017.

Bob Martin (Book) has been working as an actor and writer in Canadian theatre, film, and television for over three decades. He has had a long association with the Toronto Second City, where he co-wrote and performed in four Second City revues, directed three, and had a stint as artistic director. He is a co-creator of The Drowsy Chaperone, and has performed in many of its incarnations including Ahmanson Theatre (Los Angeles), Marquis Theatre (Broadway), Novello (London). Bob has won a number of awards for his work including an

York University, Matthew began playing keyboards for the Broadway production of Les Miserables, eventually conducting the show at 21. He has also been a keyboardist, conductor, and/or arranger for many Broadway productions including Shrek, Caroline, or Change, Nine, Oklahoma, 42nd Street, Putting It Together, Annie Get Your Gun, On the Town, Titanic, Guys and Dolls, Sunset Boulevard, and Miss Saigon. Matthew also appeared onstage as Oscar in the Broadway revival of 42nd Street.

Awards include the ASCAP Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, the Gilman/Gonzalez-Falla Theatre Award, and the Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award.

MUSIC DIRECTOR Brian Cimmet was the music director for last season’s The Wizard of Oz and Next to Normal (SALT Award, Best Music Director), and has been music director for most productions with Syracuse Stage and the Syracuse University Department of Drama since 2010. With the Department of Drama, Brian teaches classes in Musical Theater Literature and History, Audition Technique, and Music Foundations. Beyond the confines of Syracuse, Brian’s credits include the Broadway companies of Mary Poppins, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Grease, the original Off-Broadway productions of I Love You Because (also the cast album) and The Tin Pan Alley Rag, and over a hundred touring, regional, and stock productions

CHOREOGRAPHER Brian J. Marcum is a director, choreographer, dancer, and professor. Brian is so thankful to revisit this holiday classic here at Syracuse Stage after being the associate choreographer of this original holiday hit, Elf The Musical on Broadway. Most recently, Brian directed and choreographed Crazy For You for Syracuse University’s Department of Drama. He has also directed and/or choreographed for The North Carolina Theatre, Music Theatre of Wichita, Alpine Theatre Project, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, and Summer Repertory Theatre among others. As a dancer, Brian performed in six Broadway shows, The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm, Saturday Night Fever, the Tony Award-winning revival of 42nd Street, The Boy from Oz starring Hugh Jackman, Spamalot, and The Drowsy Chaperone. He has toured nationally with Annie Get Your Gun and State Fair and internationally with The Who’s Tommy. He has performed at many of the best regional theatres in the country as well as the best theme parks in the world including, Disney-

World and TokyoDisneyland. He has danced with the world famous Radio City Rockettes in the Christmas Spectacular and the Spring Spectacular and has performed numerous times on the Tony Awards, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, in music videos and the movie of The Producers.

Brian teaches master classes all over the country and has toured with Dance Olympus, taught for Broadway Theatre Connection, Southern Association of Dance Masters, Chicago National Association of Dance Masters, Oklahoma Dance Masters, Dance Masters of America, and Lachey Arts. He has been on the dance faculty at Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, and Broadway Dance Center and Ballet Arts in New York City. Brian spent six years as an associate professor of dance in the Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management at Oklahoma City University and is now a dance professor in the musical theater program at the Syracuse University Department of Drama where he teaches tap, jazz, and theater dance.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his third season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage.

He recently directed Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 produc-

tions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by

New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the year by the Arkansas Arts Council.

He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, one dog, and two cats.

MANAGING DIRECTOR iumaa, Estonia. Previously, Jill spent five years in the production office at Washington DC’s Arena Stage, after working as a stage manager in Minnesota, New Mexico, and Massachusetts. In addition to her work at Stage, Jill is an instructor in the Theater Management program of the Syracuse University Department of Drama, building on her work with high school and college students elsewhere, including at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Jill was recognized as part of the Central New York Business Journal’s “40 Under Forty” awards in 2017 and has served on numerous municipal and non-profit boards.

Jill is a proud cheesehead, hailing from Marshfield, Wisconsin. She and her husband Dave Anderson, along with their daughter, are pleased to call Central New York home.

Jill A. Anderson has served as managing director of Syracuse Stage since 2016. Jill is responsible for Stage’s nearly $6.5 million operating budget and has oversight of fundraising, marketing, and operational matters within the organization. Prior to joining Stage, Jill spent a decade as general manager at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT. During her tenure, the O’Neill completed a $7 million capital campaign and campus expansion, doubled its operating budget, and was honored with a 2015 National Medal of Arts and the 2010 Regional Theatre Tony Award. Under the O’Neill’s aegis, Jill also developed the Baltic Playwrights Conference, an annual international new play development retreat held in Hi-

A S S O C I AT E A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R Kyle Bass is the author of Possessing Harriet, commissioned by the Onondaga Historical Association, which received its world premiere at Syracuse Stage earlier this season. A two-time recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship (for fiction in 1998 and playwriting in 2010), a finalist for the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, and Pushcart Prize nominee, Kyle’s full-length plays include Tender Rain, The Faith of our Fathers, and Bleecker Street.

Separated, a piece of documentary theatre about the student military veterans at Syracuse University was presented at Syracuse Stage and at the Paley Center in New York, directed by Robert Hupp. Kyle is the co-author (with Ping Chong) of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which had its world premiere at Syracuse Stage and was subsequently produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City. Kyle’s one-act plays include Fall/Out, Theory of Night, Love is a Blue Velvet Box, Spoons, Northeast, and The Cutaneous Rabbit Illusion. Kyle has begun writing a new full-length play: Lakeview, which is set in a small city situated between a large university and a sacred but troubled body of water, and on the verge. As dramaturg, Kyle worked with acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems on her theatre piece Grace Notes: Reflections for Now, which had its world

premiere at the 2016 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, subsequently produced at Yale Rep and the Kennedy Center.

As a screenwriter, Kyle is the coauthor of the original screenplay for the film Day of Days (Broad Green Pictures, 2017), which stars awardwinning veteran actor Tom Skerritt, and he is the author of the screenplay adaptation of the novel Milk by Darcy Steinke. Kyle has been commissioned by the Society for New Music to write the libretto for an opera based on the life and music of legendry folk singer and guitarist Libba Cotten. Kyle’s plays and other writings have appeared in the journals Callaloo, Folio, and Stone Canoe, among others, and in the essay anthology Alchemy of the Word: Writers Talk about Writing. He is drama editor for the journal Stone Canoe. Recently named Burke Endowed Chair for Regional Studies at Colgate University, Kyle has taught in the M.F.A. Creative Writing program at Goddard College since 2006 and also teaches playwriting in Syracuse University’s Department of Drama, theatre courses in the Department of African American Studies, and has been guest lecturer in playwriting at Hobart & William Smith College. Kyle is creator and curator of Syracuse Stage’s Cold Read Festival of new plays, holds an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Goddard College, and is a proud member of the Dramatist Guild of America.

C H A I R , D E PA R T M E N T O F D R A M A Ralph Zito is in his ninth year as chair of the Department of Drama. He came to Syracuse University from the Juilliard School Drama Division, where he had been a teacher and director from 1992 to 2010 and chair of the Voice and Speech Department since 1999. He was a director and adjunct lecturer in the Barnard College Theater Department from 2006 until 2010 and has been a guest artist at training programs across the country, including the Old Globe in San Diego, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Academy for Classical Acting in Washington, DC. Directing credits for the Department of Drama include: Next Fall, The Spitfire Grill, As You Like It, Gruesome Playground Injuries, and The Aliens. He has served as a voice, text or dialect consultant for numerous professional productions both on and off-Broadway, including: The Light in the Piazza; Awake and Sing!; The Herbal Bed; Mrs. Klein; The Fiery Furnace; The Time of the Cuckoo (Lincoln Center Theatre); Tongue of a Bird; The Mer-

chant of Venice (New York Shakespeare Festival); The Pitchfork Disney (Blue Light Theatre Company); Birdy (The Women’s Project); The Model Apartment (Primary Stages); the New York premiere of Tony Kushner’s SLAVS! (New York Theatre Workshop); and The African Company Presents Richard III (The Acting Company). His regional theater credits include numerous productions at The Shakespeare Theatre and Arena Stage in Washington, DC; Syracuse Stage; Baltimore CENTERSTAGE; Hartford Stage; and the McCarter Theatre, among others. A former touring member of The Acting Company, he served as artistic associate of The Chautauqua Theatre Company for seven years and was a member of the Board of Directors of The American Society for the Alexander Technique (AmSAT) for six years.

He is a graduate of Harvard University, The Juilliard School, and the American Center for the Alexander Technique.

He was recently awarded the prestigious Juilliard President’s Medal in recognition of his contributions to both Juilliard and to the broader performing arts community.

A B O U T S Y R A C U S E S TA G E Originally constructed as the Regent Movie House in 1914, the physical space of Syracuse Stage has seen many films, musicians, actors and artists pass through its doors over the course of the past century. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member. Since its inception, Stage has produced over 300 shows, both plays and musicals, within its walls. Now, Stage produces six to seven shows per season, while also offering educational programs to students, various pre- and post-show events, and fundraising events each year. Stage is Central New York’s only LORT theatre and one of the largest performing arts organizations in the area. Stage has a strong commitment to giving the community access to a range of high-quality productions; it is equally committed to bringing in actors, designers and directors who are among the leading theatre professionals, both locally and across the nation.

In the age of The Crown and Victoria, we go back to the Anglophile source with Kate Hamill’s playful adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic romance, Pride and Prejudice. The outspoken Elizabeth Bennet faces mounting pressure from her status-conscious mother to secure a suitable marriage. But is marriage suitable for a woman of Elizabeth’s intelligence and independence? Especially when the irritating, aloof, self-involved… tall, vaguely handsome, mildly amusing, and impossibly aristocratic Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn? What? Why are you looking at us like that? Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent new adaptation.

Hey, Jane Austen could show these upstart hipsters a thing or two.

Enjoy a light-hearted look at what ails us in this witty and spot-on new comedy. Take a semi-retired Washington bureaucrat and his defense contractor wife, a young Chilean lawyer and his doctoral student wife, set them cheek by jowl in a border dispute over a couple of feet of property in a Georgetown backyard, and let the laughter begin. Privilege, prejudice, and yes, a border dispute all get an equitable skewering in this punchy and playful show. The road to recovering our shared sense of decency might just begin with laughter. A winner of the National Latino Playwriting Award, Karen Zacarías is among the most produced playwrights in the nation. This satirical gem shows us why.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be in the rehearsal room when actors are digging ferociously into their psyches to discover a moment of revelation, or arguing heatedly over a character’s motivation? In We Are Proud to Present …, a company of six actors gathers in a rehearsal room to tell the little-known story of the first genocide of the 20th century—the extinction of the Herero tribe at the hands of their German colonizers. Along the way, they test the limits of empathy as their own stories, subjectivities, assumptions and prejudices catalyze their theatrical process.

Eventually the full force of a horrific past crashes into the good intentions of the present, and what seemed a faraway place and time comes all too close to home in this exceptional play about the sensitivities and difficulties inherent in the act of storytelling itself.

Based on Joseph Moncure March’s 1928 narrative poem, The Wild Party is a steamy prohibition tale driven by one of the most exciting, pulse-racing scores ever written.
