Born in Budapest, Hungary in 1917, Lillian Slutzker was a survivor. After fleeing Nazi control for England, she met her husband at a USO dance and later returned to his hometown of Rome, New York.

She dedicated her life to bettering her community. The Foundation’s purpose is to carry on her incredible legacy and fulfill her passion for Judaism, education, the arts, and enriching the community.

Come From Away is a sterling example of how kindness and generosity can triumph over hatred and violence. It is a story about our better angels, and it is with that same spirit of aspirational optimism that we dedicate this production to the memory of Lillian Slutzker, whose unwavering selflessness reflects brilliantly back onto the story you’re about to see.

Throughout her long life, Lillian’s commitment to community—creating, uplifting, tending to, and fighting for— changed countless lives, in Syracuse and beyond; especially the lives of the international students she warmly welcomed, always with open arms, who came from

This production is especially timely as our nation commemorates the 25th anniversary of the terrible attacks of 9/11. Someone once said to me that Come From Away isn’t a musical about 9/11, it’s a musical about 9/12. And that’s true: This is a story about one event that unfolded in the aftermath of the tragedy. An event that took place in an isolated town in Newfoundland where thousands of travelers from across the world—confused, scared, and exhausted—got off their grounded airplanes and were welcomed by strangers.

BY JAMES VÁSQUEZ, DIRECTOR It is hard to imagine that this year is the 25th anniversary of September 11. It was one of those days in our history where we remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we got the news. It remains one of my most terrifying and uncertain moments. Yet, in that moment when humanity was being tested, I also remember humanity rising to the occasion. Never before, and not in the same way since, have I seen communities come together the way they did in 2001. Strangers extended hands to strangers to build new communities; through this awful tragedy, we all found ways to have hope again.

Community and hope are two of the strongest driving forces in my

work. When first stepping into this project, I found myself tentative, and treating it with precious gloves. However, the more I dug in, I found it to be anything but precious. With every page turn, these characters—based on and inspired by real humans—shed more of their skin and bared their hearts and souls. With those characters as guides, I found my storytelling coming to life—much as the characters in the show do.

I’m honored to be making my Syracuse Stage debut with Come From Away, and to be bringing along some of my personal community to help me tell this story.

It’s been a joy to meet and collaborate with new folks; the cast and crew and creatives, as well as

BY DEVAN MATHIAS, INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE EDUCATION ASSOCIATE Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein were somewhat familiar with the story of how the town of Gander rallied around the comefrom-aways in the days following September 11, 2001. However, it was when they attended a benefit concert in Gander on the ten-year anniversary of the attacks that they realized the full depth of the story and discovered that they needed to put the story on stage.

The concert, held at the Gander Hockey Rink, felt like a reunion for those who were there in 2001.

Many of the “plane people” returned to Gander for the event, and everyone in attendance at the concert was up on their feet dancing to the music, including

corporate executives from large commercial airlines. The style of music played at the concert, which is very specific to the region, inspired Hein and Sankoff to write much of their score with that same sound and the same kinds of instruments.

With the help of the Canadian government, Hein and Sankoff stayed in Gander for a month, interviewing residents and returnees alike, speaking with each person for four to five hours at a time. Residents offered homecooked meals to eat, places to stay, and personal stories to share, and Sankoff and Hein even got “screeched in” (the local tradition that welcomes visitors).

The writers were overwhelmed with stories of human connection, goodness, and generosity. Even after isolating themes and condensing many stories, the first draft of the show was five hours long.

Thanks to the help and guidance of director Christopher Ashley, they boiled the story down until it was much closer to the one-hourand-forty-minute version that you see today.

As a way of saying thank you to those who shared their stories, Sankoff and Hein presented one of the first performances of Come From Away in the town of Gander—on the same hockey rink as the ten-year anniversary concert— as a benefit concert to fund local charities. The show continued its development with productions at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, Seattle Repertory

Theatre, Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., and at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Canada, before the musical opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2017, playing for 1,670 performances. According to American Theatre magazine, Come From Away is the most-produced play in regional theatres this year, with 23 productions.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Robert Hupp is in his eleventh season as artistic director of Syracuse Stage. He recently directed A Christmas Story, Dial M for Murder, Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express, Our Town, The Play That Goes Wrong, Eureka Day, Annapurna, Talley’s Folly, Amadeus, Noises Off, Next to Normal, and The Three Musketeers for Stage. Prior to coming to Central New York, Robert spent seventeen seasons as the producing artistic director of Arkansas Repertory Theatre in Little Rock. He directed over 30 productions for Arkansas Rep ranging from Hamlet to Les Miserables to The Grapes of Wrath. In New York City, Robert directed the American premieres of Glyn Maxwell’s The Lifeblood and Wolfpit for the Phoenix Theatre Ensemble. He also served for nine seasons as the artistic director of the Obie Award-winning Jean Cocteau Repertory. At the Cocteau, Robert’s directing credits include works by Buchner, Wilder, Cocteau, Shaw, Wedekind and the premieres of the Bentley/Milhaud version of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children, Seamus Heaney’s The Cure at Troy, and Eduardo de Filippo’s Napoli Millionaria. He has held faculty positions at Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College and, in Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Hendrix College.

Robert served as vice president of the Board of Directors of the Theatre Communications Group and has served on funding panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Theatre Communications Group, the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. While in Arkansas, Robert was named both Non-Profit Executive of the Year by the Arkansas Business Publishing Group, and Individual Artist of the Year by the Arkansas Arts Council. He and his wife Clea ride herd over a blended family of five children, their spouses, one granddaughter, one dog and two cats.

MANAGING DIRECTOR Carly DiFulvio Allen is thrilled to have joined the team at Syracuse Stage. Originally from Rochester, N.Y., she is returning to the region after a twenty-year career on Broadway. Most recently at Disney Theatrical Group, she was the Associate General Manager for the worldwide productions of Aladdin (Broadway, First and Second North American Tours, West End, U.K. Tour, Australia, Germany, Japan, Mexico City, the Netherlands, and South Korea) and Beauty and the Beast (North American Tour, U.K. Tour, Australia, Japan, and China at the Shanghai Disney Resort). Prior to her time at Disney, she was the Company Manager for Roundabout Theatre Company at the Todd Haimes Theatre (formerly the American Airlines Theatre) for twenty-five Broadway productions. Favorites include Violet with Sutton Foster, On the Twentieth Century with Kristin Chenoweth and Peter Gallagher, Noises Off with Andrea Martin, and the original Broadway production of The 39 Steps. Last season, she directed two world premieres: Relentless by Rae Binstock (Syracuse Stage) and The Woman Question by Suli Holum (People’s Light).

As a playwright, her play Egress co-written with Sarah Saltwick, had a world premiere at Amphibian Stage and won the Roe Green Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting at Cleveland Playhouse. Melissa has served on faculty at The New School for Drama and Syracuse University. Last year, she was selected to participate in the first National Theatre Convening by the President’s Council of the Arts and Humanities, NEA, and IMLS. Kyle’s newest play, The Black Nationals, premieres at Syracuse Stage later this season. Under commission from the Washington National Opera, Kyle is the librettist for a new version of Scott Joplin’s opera Treemonisha, which premiered in March 2026. He is also the screenwriter and executive producer of the live-action short film Northeast, which premiered at the 2026 North Hollywood Cinefest and is a Best Short Film selection for the 2026 Syracuse International Film Festival.

With Ping Chong, Kyle is the co-author of Cry for Peace: Voices from the Congo, which premiered at Syracuse Stage and was produced at La MaMa Experimental Theatre in New York City. A descendant of African people enslaved in colonial New England and in the American South, Kyle lives and writes in central upstate New York, where his family has lived free and owned land for 226 years. The Syracuse Stage that exists today is a nonfor-profit professional theatre company founded in 1974, and a longstanding League of Resident Theatres (LORT) member.
