Welcome to the academic world premiere of A Rebel Prayer, the first full production of this work and the first time the Syracuse University Department of Drama has premiered a new musical on its main stage. Over the past year and a half, the show has been incubated in various forms at the Department of Drama—beginning with a table-read in Fall 2024, continuing with a full-semester course (DRA 300: Workshopping New Musicals) in Spring 2025, progressing through a six-week workshop in Fall 2025, and culminating in the Spring 2026 developmental production you will see today. Each step has brought exciting growth and change through the collaboration, artistry, and dedication of the students, faculty, and the writers, Eloise Govedare (Book and Lyrics) and Aleksandra Weil (Music). Even now, the piece is still evolving, and your presence and responses are part of shaping what it will one day become. We are deeply grateful to Eloise and Aleksandra for letting us be part of their story—and to you, our audience, for joining us in this creative process.
