Using grey solutions to support blue-green infrastructure

Helping to make urban climate resilience a reality

By supporting ‘green by default’ best practice and complementing it with engineered grey infrastructure, we are helping to pioneer effective hybrid water management solutions that can:

• reduce the urban heat island effect

• boost biodiversity

• increase water circularity

• create amenity value

We work closely with our partners to create smart solutions including tree tanks, blue-green roofs, irrigation, rainwater attenuation and infi ltration tanks.

See how we could help develop your hybrid water management solutions for a more climate-resilient future.

Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental

Welcome to CIWEM’s 2025 Consultants and Contractors File

CIWEM CONNECTS A community of Royal Chartered, expert and multi-disciplinary members and organisations to inspire widespread, impactful solutions to water and environmental challenges, and I am delighted to be its Chief Executive.

Given the complex nature of many environmental challenges at all scales, this multidisciplinary background is crucial to understanding and delivering solutions that really tackle the challenges that we face globally, and we’re aware that the profession will have to grow and evolve in terms of skills and capacity to meet them. We also know that we can support this process through our activities, from evidenced thought leadership all the way through to knowledge exchange and training.

From growing exposure to environmental risks from climate change to resource depletion to destruction of natural habitats, there’s a vivid need to take ambitious action on responding more concertedly to climate change impacts with more adaptation and resilience measures at-scale, embracing everything from flood defences through to new water resources. There’s also a need for policymakers and regulators to look beyond the obvious and understand the water cycle and that water works as a system, and is fundamentally impacted by what we do on land.

We need to improve the sustainability of practice (including planning, coordination and financing) on land, and at town, city and national scale which needs cross-government and multi-government cooperation and alignment. We also need to work more closely with nature and to stop working against it. We have hugely exceeded the carrying capacity of the planet. This doesn’t mean we won’t need major engineering and technical innovation and delivery, but that will need to go hand-inhand with multi-functional, nature-based solutions too. If we get this right, then we can deliver at-scale and be more cost effective through tackling problems at source, rather than always having to deal with them at the end of a pipe, in a high-cost, high-carbon way. Our Consultants and Contractors file is an effective platform for companies who want to promote their services and products which will help to do this.

CIWEM Business Partners
