MISSION CIPMA’s mission is to ensure the sustainability and growth of a healthy and viable independent fuel marketing and distribution sector at both the wholesale and retail levels in Canada. Our specific goals include: Ensuring that independent fuel marketers thrive and have the opportunity to earn a fair and reasonable return that is proportionate to their business risk and capital investment, and ensuring that Canadian consumers and independent fuel marketers have access to a competitively priced and readily available supply of fuel products in all regions of the country.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT JENNIFER STEWART | PRESIDENT & CEO
Dear CIPMA Members and Associate Members With summer winding down, we look to the fall as a time to continue to build momentum and awareness of CIPMA and its members with governments and the public at large. In an effort to help our advocacy endeavors, we recently commissioned a report from Kent Marketing on the sector, with a particular focus on how prices are set and the evolution of the downstream market. We found in our meetings with officials that such a report would be useful and a key takeaway as regulations and policy are being developed. You can access the report in the members-only section of the website. We are also conducting research and polling with Nanos Research on topics such as carbon pricing, credit card fees and impressions of the sector as a whole. Understanding public perception about the sector will be critical in our work going forward. We have received many responses to our Member Survey, and appreciate the time spent in filling out the form – thank you. For those companies who have not yet responded to the survey, we encourage you to do so.
The results of the survey provide us with an in-depth perspective of the sector and will be important in communicating the impact of CIPMA and its membership. Lastly, we hope to see many of you on the greens at our annual CIPMA Golf Challenge on September 13th. There is still time to register, which you can do here. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer, and I look forward to seeing many of you soon.

Growth is in our DNA: we are always looking for ways to take our brands to new consumers in new areas, as we grow both organically and through acquisitions, all the while remaining focused on operational excellence and keeping our valued customers happy. What brings you confidence about the Canadian petroleum market? Fuel is our largest category, and we will continue to grow it across the network. In addition to our own Couche-Tard and Circle K fuel brands, we are confident that we have the right mix of core fuel brands including Esso, Irving and Ultramar in Canada and we are always looking for ways to push forward the business in our four Canadian divisions. Loyalty programs are becoming more important to the Canadian consumer, and we have partnered with our fuel brands to drive more traffic to our sites. We are also excited by ways to reach customers, such as the new ESSO Speedpass+ APP, which continually improve the experience for our Canadian drivers. Can you speak to the rebranding of many sites to Circle K? We have over 3,350 stores in North America and 1,650 stores in Europe proudly showing off the new Circle K brand. By the end of the year, many more locations across the globe will display the new look, and in Canada, we are beginning the transformation of the Mac’s convenience brand with over 500 stores now branded Circle K. In Quebec, we will continue with the beloved Couche-Tard brand. In some locations across our network, we have also rebranded many fueling forecourts to provide a 360-degree experience with easy visits for people on the go. What, in your opinion, does the future of petroleum marketing look like. We continually look for the right mix of products and services, both inside and outside the store, to drive traffic to our locations.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Billy Beane is Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations for the Oakland A’s. Considered one of the most progressive and talented baseball executives in the game today, Beane shattered traditional MLB beliefs that big payrolls equated wins by implementing a statistical methodology that led the Oakland A’s, one of the worst teams in baseball with one of the lowest payrolls, to six American League West Division Titles. That strategic methodology has come to be known as the Moneyball philosophy. Today, Billy Beane’s “Moneyball” philosophy has been adopted by organizations of all sizes, across all industries, to more effectively, efficiently, and profitably manage their assets, talent, and resources. He has helped to shape the way modern businesses view and leverage big data and employ analytics for long-term success. Business Meeting and General Session Thursday, November 8 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. U.S. Economic Performance and Petroleum Marketer David Nelson, Professor of Economics at Western Washington University and Founder and CEO of Finance & Resource Management Consultants, Inc., joins SIGMA to discuss at recent U.S. Economic Performance and how petroleum marketers have performed over time and consider what’s in store for the U.S. Economy as we examine changing trade policy, rising interest rates from a more restrictive Federal Reserve, and tight labor markets. Nelson’s economic insights are not to be missed!
The Eleven Year Itch: Real Trends, Fake Trends and Fuel Myths for 2019-2029 The oil price crash of 2015-2017 is clearly in the rear-view mirror, but what lies ahead for liquid fuels through the next decade? Mainstream media might suggest (incorrectly) that crude oil, gasoline, diesel and biofuels will give way to batteries and charging stations. For over 40 years, Tom Kloza, Global Head of Energy Analysis for Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), has separated mainstream myth from the reality of the North American marketplace and he’ll do so again as fuel marketers face the most disruptive year (2019) and perhaps the most disruptive decade since the first ten years of SIGMA’s existence. Legislative Issues Briefing (This session is open to all Conference attendees) Attend the SIGMA Legislative Committee Meeting and Issues Briefing and get the latest updates on issues of interest to you that are pending before Congress and the Administration. Get the latest information on SIGMA’s priority issues and what has happened since the Spring Conference in Dallas. How Congress acts on SIGMA’s issues will have a direct impact on your business and the future of the fuels industry. You can’t afford to miss this important session! Other Education Topics: • A View of the Current M&A Market • Panel Discussion: “California as a Crystal Ball” – What can the rest of the country expect? • Updates on the Fuels Market

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is offering 11 million barrels of oil for sale from the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) ahead of sanctions on Iran that are expected to reduce global supplies of crude.

BREAKENRIDGE: ECONOMIC PRIORITIES, NOT POLITICS, SHOULD DRIVE NEW PIPELINES It may be naive to think that politics can be divorced entirely from the conversation about pipelines, but in a perfect world these matters would be driven solely by economics. ‘GOOSE BUMPS’: CNRL DEVELOPS OILSANDS MINING IDEA THAT ELIMINATES TAILINGS PONDS As rock-bottom oil prices dragged into 2016, a team of CNRL employees brought an idea to Joy Romero, vice-president of technology and innovation for the Calgary-based energy company. ONTARIO ASKS COURT TO TOSS LAWSUIT FROM TESLA OVER ELECTRIC VEHICLE REBATES Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government has asked the province’s Superior Court to throw out a petition from the Canadian arm of Tesla Inc. that claims the U.S. company has been treated unfairly in the government’s cancellation of an electric vehicle rebate program. ATLANTIC REGION IT’S TIME FOR A FRESH LOOK AT ENERGY EAST OPINION: To counter both unpredictable U.S. moves against Canada on trade, and the zany spat with Saudi Arabia, a strategic option for the government of Justin Trudeau would be to assert its authority over interprovincial pipelines and initiate a “fast track” regulatory review of the Energy East pipeline.
