Dear Members,
It continues to be a volatile time in our sector, with ongoing uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine affecting gas prices globally and possibly hastening the transition to renewable fuel sources as governments look to ensure energy security.
The EU just announced its plans for phasing out Russian oil and gas over the coming years and reducing usage significantly in the short term. Their approach involves an accelerated adoption of clean fuels and energy sources, particularly hydrogen.
Canadian and US energy ministers and leaders have met several times over the past month to talk about the idea of North American energy security, with several noteworthy results. These included the Canadian promise to increase oil production/exports by 300,000 barrels a day, and an agreement to identify locations for crossborder hydrogen hubs and develop standards around the carbon intensity of clean hydrogen.
It’s also a busy time politically, with Jason Kenney stepping down as premier of Alberta, the upcoming election in Ontario, and increasing calls for “fuel forgiveness” across the country. Between provincial politics and the final days of the federal legislative calendar before Parliament rises for the summer, we at CEMA will continue to follow developments closely and to watch for opportunities to advocate for our Members’ best interests.
As always, we are here to support you. Don’t hesitate to reach out should you have any questions or concerns.
All the best,
Jennifer Stewart
President and CEO
