trade news ORION Surveys Erotic Gifts Under the Christmas Tree Erotic Christmas gifts are not necessarily at the top of everyone’s wish lists. However, an ORION survey has shown that 33 percent of the participants have given away an erotic product as a Christmas gift at least once. Lingerie is the clear leader with 15 percent of the answers, right before sex toys at 9 percent. The survey also reveals that a lot more men than women have given away an erotic product as a Christmas gift before. A bit of a surprise is that in households with children, erotic gifts such as lingerie, sex toys and gift certificates for erotic shops are a more common gift than in households where there are no children.

Fact is: When the season gets darker and a bit gloomy, the pleasant anticipation of giving away gifts and receiving gifts raises significantly. Even if you are one of the 84 percent of women and 85 percent of men who, according to an ORION survey would be happy to unwrap a Christmas gift to find a sex toy, it is not always easy to find a suitable gift. The Flensburg erotic specialists presented lots of bestsellers and new products at their ORION stand in Hanover. The focus was on the new collections from the best-selling labels Cottelli Collection Lingerie and Bondage, Abierta Fina by Cottelli Collection as well as Svenjoyment Underwear and NEK. The sex toy range was represented by best-selling products from You2Toys and Sweet Smile, but there were also some brand-new sex toy lines such as Cuties and GoGasm.

Once again, ORION Wholesale received the sought-after ean Erotix Award for “Wholesale Company of the Year” at this year’s eroFame. The Flensburg company also received the Sign Award again for “Best German Wholesaler”.

Sex Toys for Men The last decade has seen dramatic growth in sex toys designed for men, a long-awaited and much-deserved expansion that not only has been a boon for our industry, but also has helped normalize the fact that men absolutely use – and love! – sex toys.

While this growth has resulted in a massive upswing in both the quantity and quality of such products, the market remains dominated by strokers and masturbators made with heterosexual men in mind.

These products, often molded after vulvas and female forms, pay little attention to men who have sex with men – a major demographic that is ready and willing to spend top dollar on quality items that pay attention to their needs and interests.

There’s more to making a masturbator or stroker that appeals to the gay male consumer. Yet, many of these items revolve around the assumption that men who have sex with men are focused solely on anal penetration. This results in a bevy of strokers that feature a tight anus-like tunnel with little more to offer – and while this is absolutely a key product to offer, we found it interesting to learn that, unlike masturbator collections made for heterosexual men, most “gay male” masturbator lines stop with the stroker.

Fortunately, there are some forward-thinking brands that are working to break the heteronormativity within this category by designing masturbators that go beyond a simple tight tunnel. As the adult novelty industry continues to grow and evolve, we will see more of this kind of conscientious toy design with more products that acknowledge the unique and individual ways users experience pleasure – and whom they enjoy it with. Gone are the days of assumed heteronormativity; today’s customers expect and deserve products that cater to who they are, what they enjoy, and who stars in their fantasies.

’s Newest Fifty Shades of Grey In September, Lovehoney held a low-key event at their increasingly shiny and sprawling headquarters in Bath, England.

In attendance were a crosssection of UK journalists, bloggers and affiliates, eager to be talked through the British behemoth’s latest products from lingerie to lube.

Synergy headed directly to the Trade area to have a chat with MPD Coordinator for Sex Toys Lauren Dobson. Laid out across Lauren’s table were two dozen brand new Fifty Shades of Grey products. In black and silver packaging, these twenty-four black and silver items were organised into four different sub-collections named Pleasure Overload (with a purple flash across the box), Inner Goddess (blue flash), Greedy Girl (burgundy) and Relentless Vibrations (pink flash). Each of these contained six products under one theme.

Lauren talked us through the concept, explaining that from their extensive catalogue, Lovehoney had “taken the four best-selling toys: so, the bestselling kit, the best-selling Kegel ball, the best-selling remote control toy, the best-selling vibrator, and then created subcollections around each one.”

Brandishing the Greedy Girl, recently repackaged to fit in with the rest of the new silver and black Fifty Shades range, Lauren continued, “So for example, out of the Rabbit vibrator category, the iconic Greedy Girl G-Spot is the best-selling rabbit and overall the best-selling toy within the whole Fifty Shades 56

section. So obviously that was a no-brainer – we were definitely going to do a collection around the Greedy Girl.”

Lauren explained, “We analyse sales so we know what works best, we talk to the Trade team to see what people have asked for, or what they’d like to see, and what the Trade team would think would be good. Because their customers’ feedback is valuable to us, especially since we don’t get their reviews online like our other customer feedback. So, we work really closely with the Trade team. And with that in mind we’ve added five other Rabbits to the Greedy Girl. We think the Thrusting Rabbit will be the second biggest seller from this mini collection.

We’ve done thrusting toys before, and from our experience with the Happy Rabbit range we know a Thrusting Rabbit sells really well. Hence why we think alongside the Greedy Girl it’ll be our next biggest seller.”

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that E.L. James herself has a hand in the products Lovehoney brings out, working closely with Product Development Director Bonny Hall. Lauren described the process for us, “It’s a really collaborative thing: Erika helps with all the developments, she sees the samples and the packaging, tells us what she likes and doesn’t like, and it’s signed off”.

So Lauren, does this latest Fifty Shades launch mean author E.L. James has another

book in the series coming out?

“If there is, it’s probably a safelyguarded secret by Erika. As far as we’re concerned, this release was because there’s still more we can do with Fifty Shades: it’s a really popular brand, and the technology as well as the really good quality is what people love.”

According to Kate HodgsonEgan, “All the Fifty Shades were really well-received. Last year we only launched the advent calendar, so people were asking us for new products. But last year E.L. James took the year off, which obviously restricted us as she has to approve everything.”

“What is the best-selling Kegel Ball, and how can we develop that further?” Well, the “Hero” product in this case turned out to be the original Fifty Shades Silver Pleasure Balls, but as Kate observed, “You

needed to be quite an advanced user – or expert! – to be able to hold the 221 g of the original Kegels. So, we’re really excited to have brought out the mini version at 85g. We’ve now tried to ensure we’ve covered all category of weight.” Lauren confirmed that, “now across the six Kegel trainers in the Inner Goddess there’s a weight and size for everyone, starting at 67g.”

And the Relentless Vibrations collection? Lauren: “The bestselling remote-control item was the silver Love Egg. Remotecontrol toys are always very popular. But my favourite is the Remote Knicker Vibrator as it’s the smallest panty vibrator we’ve done, so it’s discreet but very powerful – as the Fifty Shades line always is – and it’s very slick-looking and stylish, with the same black and silver theme as the rest of the brand.”

Synergy received a small but perfectly formed sample and can confirm its appeal.

Meanwhile, the original multiitem kit was the Fifty Shades Freed 10 Days of Play, now available under the Pleasure Overload banner. As Lauren pointed out, “These kits are great for gifts as they’re beautifully packaged and

you have everything there. If you’re inquisitive it’s a good way of introducing things. And it’s generally better value for money.”

We asked Lauren how to go about creating a kit: is it purely a matter of putting together a varied cross-section of products?

Kate had a similar perspective, “Gift sets are always great: the kits sell well at Christmas, and

Having been in the business a long time, we’re rarely surprised at the contents of a courier delivery. But a parcel of goodies from BMS Novelties in Canada prompted an immediate response, containing as it did a Palmpower VIBEZ, one of the funniest-looking toys we’ve seen in a long while – in both senses of the word.

2019 has been a monumental year for Satisfyer, part of German company EIS GmbH. In April, subscribers to Elle magazine in America who’d opted-in, received a free Satisfyer Traveler with their magazine, while May revealed the company had acquired worldwide rights to Penthouse – and its new Penthouse Stores.

To sponsor Pride Month in June, a Satisfyer skin adorned the window of the Museum of Sex in NYC. August and September then saw the Satisfyer Pro 2.0 crowned New Zealand’s favourite sex toy, as one online store sold 3,500 units over three days.

Bright pink, with a silicone shaft and flat, triangular head topped with slim rabbit ears, the Palmpower VIBEZ was unlike anything we’d seen before, reminding us of a rechargeable Wand crossed with a Rabbit vibrator. Which probably explains why BMS market it as, err…a ‘Rabbit Wand’!

As big fans of the Palmpower range of Wands and their associated head attachments, we expected great things from the VIBEZ. We needn’t have doubted – in terms of power the VIBEZ was a worthy stablemate, its seven different functions suitably fierce. The first four settings (low, medium, high and ultra) imparted differing degrees of intensity, and the remaining three conveyed a trio of patterns (Pulse, Echo and Hype). None of these options were particularly quiet, but this was only to be expected since the motor was so powerful.

The PowerBullet™ motor was situated in the widest part of the toy which made up the head. This 2” (5cm) triangular area had a flat front for silky stimulation, while the flipside featured bumps for a more textured experience. Under this triangle was a flexible neck, and below that again was the shaft, with a single button for easy-peasy, onepress control.

The vibrations adequately travelled down the length of the shaft.

However, using the narrower end for penetration entailed holding the VIBEZ by the triangle which, since it was powerful, could cause numbing to the hand. We found it worked better to turn the motor off and use the long end as a passive, rather than dynamic, dildo.

What of the ears? Well, in addition to bringing the toy up to a length of 8.75” (22.22cm), these two silicone tips fluttered very cutely along with the internal vibrations, adding a gentle tickling sensation for the clitoris and nipples to the more forceful surfaces of the triangle. Satisfyer have launched a line of Layon vibrators (auf liege – in German, ‘to lay on’), as these products ‘lay on’ the body rather than being inserted. Available in a variety of silhouettes such as the Purple Pleasure and the White Temptation, we were sent the Sweet Sensation, delightfully designed to look like vanilla icecream atop an equally white cone – possibly a nod to Satisfyer parent company EIS meaning ice-cream, in German.

The Sweet Sensation has intuitive controls, a simple + and - on the cone to get you scrolling through the 15 vibration settings, 5 speeds and 10 rhythms. Neither the quietest nor the loudest but somewhere reassuringly in-between, this rechargeable toy is playfully waterproof. However, we would have liked to have been able to use the tip of the cone for pinpoint stimulation, and it would have been fun to see its packaging sporting a similar ice-cream theme.

Made of firmer silicone than its soft-serve appearance belies, the vibrator head is rippled like soft-scoop ice cream for extra stimulation – you can use it vertically or horizontally depending on your personal preferences. All this and it’s small enough to sit in the palm of the hand: whipped cream, anyone?

While the wheels of Satisfyer keep churning and their enviable success is nothing short of mouth-watering, we would recommend their Sweet Sensation for foreplay – as a taster or amuse-bouche rather than the main course. EIS EIS Baby!

XR’s Size Matters collection provides enlargement pumps for breasts, balls, and the rest. We plumped for the Deluxe Auto Penis Pump with Mouth Sleeve, being a reassuring sterile white plastic with a ‘crystal clear chamber’. The transparent tube was ideal for ensuring the penis stayed a healthy colour under pressure, for monitoring the increase in size, and for visual titillation (amirite?).

Motorised and rechargeable, the Deluxe Auto Penis Pump featured three speeds to enhance stamina and performance, as well as to improve size. As with all vacuum devices, the DAPP worked best when the skin was shaved, as this helped improve the seal around the penis. Lube made the experience more comfortable and, if using your pump daily, we’d also recommend using a moisturiser afterward to keep yourself in peak condition.

The trick with a penis pump is not to rush the process. For us, this is where the automated suction worked so much better than the hand-pumps: the blood flow to the penis increased incrementally, making the overall experience less jarring. The three speed selections offered good scope for progression, both to get used to the vacuum sensation and as the penis enlarged over time. That said, it would be useful if XR offered different sized cylinders in addition to this 7.5” version – which in our testing actually meant a 7” extension, due to the fleshy body area at the base of the penis being sucked into the tube too.

We liked that the mouth-shaped Sleeve was removeable, firstly for hygiene reasons and secondly because it gave us more ways to enjoy the pump. The sleeve did make a difference: we were able to try it for pleasure, but for others it could made the cylinder too small. For us the pump worked best without the sleeve, although as the DAPP was reasonably heavy it was still tricky holding the pump upwards to follow the erection direction (er…).

The DAPP made me appear longer and thicker during use, which gave me a boost of confidence. I also found that the blood flow to the penis seemed to improve: in general, my erections felt firmer.

However, you will need to work at the DAPP consistently to see any significant change over time; I guess it depends how much Size Matters to you.
