THE SCREAMING O INITIATES INDEPENDENT PRODUCT MATERIAL VERIFICATION & LABELING CAMPAIGN The Screaming O has launched Phase 1 of a new product materials verification and labeling process, which includes independent lab testing of its SEBS, silicone and other materials with new packaging that clearly labels each item’s certified components.

This education-focused campaign is meant to quell any misinformation relating to the stretchy materials used in its vibrating rings, cock rings and other mini vibes while promoting responsible manufacturing and consumer confidence.

As part of its commitment to customers, retailers and consumers of all kinds, The Screaming O has contracted an independent laboratory and a separate third-party verifier to test each material in its catalog – including ABS, SEBS, premium silicone, and TPE. The first testing phase, conducted in December 2014, revealed that The Screaming O’s SEBS and premium silicone are pure, non-toxic and body-safe, and the company has begun updating marketing, packaging, websites and more to amend any materials-related misinformation that may be circulating.

“We choose to manufacture much of our product line out of pure SEBS in order to provide quality alternatives for men, women and couples who cannot afford (or do not want) to drop more than $40 on a rechargeable cock ring or clitoral vibe,” The Screaming O Account Executive Conde Aumann said. “Our products serve as ‘gateway toys’ to consumers looking to try something new – often for the very first time – as well as more experienced shoppers working with a sex toy budget. The initial testing was sparked by miscommunication regarding the labeling of The Screaming O’s SEBS material. SEX PARTY IN PARLIAMENT HOUSE! The Australian Sex Party has scored a major victory in the Victorian state elections. Two weeks after the poll, and with more than 90% of votes counted, the party is being declared a winner in two upper house seats and has recorded its best ever result in an election campaign.

Sex Party President and candidate, Fiona Patten, said that the party was now recognised as the major minor party in Australian politics.

“We are not just a single issue party either and have policies across a wide spectrum of social and economic life including drug law reform, voluntary euthanasia, taxing religions, 24 hour public transport and better tax breaks for small businesses”, she said.

All political parties draw funding from their supporters. The Sex party does not have access to the millions of dollars that the two major parties have from unions and big business, nor the vast reserves that religious parties like Family First have or billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmers’ party has.

However it does have support from the Australian adult industry and this time, the Eros Association, the party’s major sponsor, coordinated a war chest from amongst its member’s fees that included some substantial amounts.

The most significant investment in getting candidates elected came from the HGC/Sexpo/Club X group* who provided a total of $121,000.

CEO, Ken Hill, said that the adult industry provided products to the community that were now well recognised by doctors, therapists and other professionals. “We are a professional industry and as such we thought that it was time we showed a professional approach to politics and to invest in our company’s future, through a strategic political donation”, he said. “When you see the insidious hand of religion and moral’s campaigners in politics around the world and the negative effects that it has on our industry, its time to fight back, just as surely as you would fight back against someone who set fire to your warehouse”.

Ms Patten said that without the HGC/Sexpo/Club X/Tickle Your Fancy funding, the party would never have been able to raise its profile the way it did. “Investing in the Sex Party and a political solution to industry problems requires a ‘big picture’ approach to business”, she said. “It requires courage and a deeper understanding of how business fits into society, to put your money where your mouth is and fund the Sex Party the way they did”.

She also acknowledged other significant amounts including $20,000 from alternative products retailer, Off Ya Tree and $10,000 from Trio Trading. Night club and entertainment company Entertainment Management Services, provided $15,000 while $10,000 came from well known adult products distributors Claredale and Windsor Wholesale. Blue Dreams Global Inc. (BDGI), is launching their new couple’s product, The Lovers’ Dream, at the International Lingerie Show in Las Vegas in April 2015. Synergy spoke with the Founder and Designer, Lawrence Mark.

The Lovers’ Dream is my first product in a series of sex products designed predominantly for couples, however the Lovers’ Dream can also be used for solo play. In addition to the 3 vibrating motors, it is the only sex toy that changes the dimensions for a couple while making love.

Because of its unique shape, for the male the sensation of using the product will make her tighter, shallower and when he pushes over the bulb it will stimulate him at the head of the penis, where it counts. For her the sensation will be quite filling, as if he is thicker in girth and longer.

In addition, if the bullet vibe is in the anus position, he will be pushed against her G-spot.

I’ve been working on the Lovers’ Dream and other concepts for many years now. Finally in March 2014 I signed an agreement with my design company. I sent them the designs I had done previously and we had many hours of discussions about what I wanted and what my patent allowed me to create without infringing on any other products. The digital design was finally completed and silicone shapes were sent to me for testing. After test feedback from quite a few couples, the shape was altered for the final time. The electronic prototype was eventually completed and sent to me for testing also. That was also several times before I was satisfied.

I’ve now tested the first production samples from China, they’re great and the feedback we are getting from others is incredible.

The patent issue is very important to protect your product and ideas, but also to make sure you are not infringing on the works of others. I have patents covering the concepts of couples, penis extension & vagina tightener in many countries. It’s my invention, I created the idea myself, and I have struggled with developing it over many years, I have sacrificed a lot of time and money on this and that’s where patent protection comes in.

I’ve researched the market and believe that initially for this item, the target audience would be couples in relationships but the different concepts, shapes, sizes and electronic configurations each have their own unique appeal so we think there are 6 potential markets: 1. Couples 2. Sex Toy 3. Penis extension 4. Vagina tightener 5. Gay 6. Medical We aim to complete our first production run in May to start selling into the US market by July, and hopefully BDGI can start

shipping other markets by Oct, Nov, 2015. The first version of the Lovers’ Dream has a US pin plug only so can only be sold in those relevant territories. USB versions are already planned and we are keen to implement those so we can expand globally however it makes sense to tackle one continent at a time and do that well, rather than be stretched too thin and then suffer on all fronts.

I believe that to succeed long term, it’s about producing consistent and reliable quality products that consumers can actually successfully use and achieve their desired result. It’s about fulfilling expectations.

Ergonomics, quality, modern, body safe materials, ease of use, longevity and a sensible price point- all these variables play a vital role.

I’ve never been concerned about competition. I have original ideas, I stay ahead and I’m not a follower. As long as others don’t infringe on my ideas and patents, I’m not really concerned.

I think competition is healthy, it great for consumers and it stimulates the market in general.

Looking back on your career path, what were the most important steps you took in getting elected to the Victorian Parliament?

Well it’s taken quite a while to get into this position. People come to politics in many ways. Some just happen to be in the right place at the right time and they get pre selected; some work for a party over many years and work their way into a Ministerial support job and get pre selected from there.

Not many people enter politics by coming at it from an industry group without political party support. Eros has been unique in that way. I guess my decision in 1992 to accept John Lark and the old Adult Video Industry Association’s request to be the CEO of the new Eros Foundation was the real beginning of this path.

In terms of guidance and assistance to finally get to where you are now, who or what has been your guiding lights?

Without a doubt the members of the Eros Association have provided the most assistance. You have to remember that the Sex Party was always a ‘campaign’ of the Eros Association, just as our campaign to stop X rated films being banned in the mid 1990s was a ‘campaign’. We certainly wanted to get people elected with this campaign but we also wanted to show politicians that the adult industry was capable of putting together its own political party and that if they didn’t start acting more sympathetically to our issues, we would take votes from them.

The seat I took at this election was formerly occupied by the Liberal Party. The seat that Sex Party candidate, Martin Leahy missed out on by 230 votes was a Greens seat.

What drives you?

I don’t really even know the full answer to that myself! I was driven to get elected because I passionately believed in Eros member’s issues. That still holds and I hope to introduce a number of issues into the Victorian Parliament this year that will reflect that. But I’m also driven by social injustice and issues like euthanasia, abortion, gay marriage and domestic violence also drive me to do what I do. On a personal level, swimming drives me as well. If I don’t swim I feel like I’m drowning out of water!

Are you now a career politician, is this your end goal or where does it go from here?

If you mean am I looking to end my working life as a politician? I don’t think so. I’d like to get a second term in the Victorian parliament for sure so that I could finish off on the things I am starting now. But after that…. wow…I haven’t even delivered my maiden speech yet so it’s a bit premature to think that far ahead. One thing I can say for sure is that I would like to set up the Sex Party in such a way that we have a few more members in this parliament and that we start getting candidates elected in other states.

How have the first few months been? The first two months have been all about learning the ropes. There’s a sort of politician’s school that all newbies attend so that we know all the procedures and the practicalities of working in the parliamentary chamber.

I’ve been working on quite a few issues but the major ones have been euthanasia, discrimination that affects adult and other marginalized businesses and occupations, abortion, getting the X rating legal and drug law reform.

How do you think you can bring positive changes to the citizens of Victoria and to the adult industry?

Well I guess that depends on where you’re coming from. If you are a priest or an antiabortionist or someone who doesn’t like the adult industry, the changes that I am proposing won’t be seen as positive. However if you are a reasonably progressive person on social issues, I think my drug law reform proposals could revolutionise the way we regulate recreational drugs in Victoria. I think we could knock out most of the organized crime involved in the drug trade and provide much better services for people who are struggling with their drug use.

I will be trying to review prostitution laws and as I said before trying to amend the Discrimination laws to stop people discriminating against people and corporations on the basis of their job and occupation. If we could allow people to sue others for withholding goods or services, over charging or demeaning people’s stature, just because they work in the adult industry, or are a butcher or a ‘scumbag’ journalist or even a bastard politician….I think we’d be better off!

I’d like to see people dying with dignity when its time to go rather than in a ball of pain which is compounded by a family’s grief at seeing this pain. I’m currently leading the charge to set up exclusion zones around abortion clinics to stop young women from being harassed and assaulted on their way into the clinic. And I’m talking to the government about ending the 30 year prohibition on X films in Victoria by giving them the same status off line that they currently enjoy online.

Any last words?

I’d just like to thank all those Eros members over the years that have stood by me on this journey. It’s their resources that have got us to this point and nowhere else in the world has this happened. In fact, I don’t know of any industry association in Australia ever being successful in getting one of their own into parliament. So for the adult shop owner, adult entertainment owner, social tonics distributor etc…if you thought that was all you were doing – think again. You’ve also been a freedom fighter and your business and resources have just helped to further the cause of free speech and personal freedom in Australia by a country mile. Well done Eros members!

How does a typical day look?

Have your expectations been met?

My typical day involves meeting constituents, doing media, meeting industry and union groups, meeting other members of parliament, taking calls from the Eros office when they can’t find the stapler or the garbage liners and liaising with my staff. My campaign manager from the election, Nevena Spirovska, is now my office manager and a Canberra journalist who came down here to help in the campaign, Jorian Gardiner, is my new media advisor. Jorian was previously the director of the Canberra Fringe Festival and is a legend for putting on a burlesque show set in Berlin which featured a satirical skit on Hitler. Unfortunately the satire bit went over the heads of a few social conservatives in Canberra and he was sacked. As Eros members will know, I like to party and I like a good laugh as well. Being an experienced political journalist as well, Jorian was a good fit for the Sex Party.

We at B Swish believe both design and functionality are extremely important factors influencing the end consumer’s decision to actually buy a product. It is always convenient to go into a physical shop, but there is no secret that their sales would slipping drastically in comparison to online stores. I think the physical shops should be upping their social media game to get people into their stores rather than buying online.

How is Sassy Minx responding to the rise in ecommerce sales?

Whilst a lot of our sales come from the party plan side of our business, we still monitor closely our sales and trends, and work hard on gaining maximum exposure for our online store.

What advice could you give someone intending to start in adult retail today?

Make sure you have a niche market. The market is saturated with adult retail trying to compete with one another.

Get into the office early and liaise with our overseas suppliers and see what new shipments are coming in for the week ahead.

If we look at your retail business 10 years ago versus now, what changes did you see and how have your responded to them?

10 years ago our stores were smaller and more male orientated with lots of magazines and DVDs. Today our stores are large, bright, female and couples friendly. With a huge selection of toys, lingerie and a smaller section with DVDs and mags. 3 years ago we did a major re-branding and put our stores all under the ‘Peaches and Cream’ brand instead of ‘Erox’ with the exception of ‘The Grinder’ which caters for the gay cliental, with speciality products and designer menswear.

What are some of the best things your business has done/what is your business especially proud of?

We are really proud to be the market leader in New Zealand for Adult retail; we have the most stores around the country and have something for all walks of life and interests. We are frequently having product training sessions with our staff so they are kept up to date with all new products released and can share all the info with the customers on the best items for their needs.

Quickly re-opening our Christchurch store after the second earthquake and second relocation!

We managed to find a new location not too far from our last one, which was surprising as so many of the buildings/stores were badly damaged and destroyed or landlord didn’t want an adult store. The Christchurch public fully got behind us and when we had our grand opening day they came down in masses, that was a huge day for us and their support was so heart warming.

We have our online business as well so even if you aren’t located near one of our locations you can still order the same great products and get them shipped to you anywhere.

They are VITAL without them we don’t have a business, if you don’t have good retail staff you might as well close the doors.

Someone who is bubbly, has experience with toys, friendly and someone who is willing to learn about new things. Open minded is a must as a wide variety of people come in.

Very important! Lots of regulars like to try the latest new things and add to their collection. It also gives staff great new conversation starters.

You need to cover all the basic ranges and have a selection of both affordable but quality items and the higher range for the customer who is after a bit more luxurious exclusive item.

We go to the tradeshows around the world (ExpoMark, Sexpo, ANME, Eurofame) and keep close contact with all our suppliers and they will often fly down to visit us with new lines and do staff training while they are here.

Even though we have the most stores throughout the country, we still have a bit of competition from other smaller owner operated companies. We also have extra taxes with the shipping of lingerie and the exchange rates fluctuating can affect our bottom line.

What advice could you give someone intending to start in the adult retail today?

‘Don’t be an idiot’ lol, think long and hard about it. I wouldn’t recommend starting from scratch; it would be better to find an existing store and then makes changes to how you want it.

How is your business responding to the rise in ecommerce sales?

We are doing more promotions online and in store, ship both domestically and internationally, built our website so it is easy to navigate and mobile friendly, adding all the new ranges once they come in. We have a full time web designer who looks after all the day-to-day running.

It was about 14 years ago in May 1999. A friend was working in an adult store and was offered the chance to purchase it. He needed help with the finance and asked if I would like to become a partner to which I said yes. Soon after, I was offered to purchase a second store and quickly snapped up the chance once again. I met my business partner Andrew through mutual friends as he was in the same industry with his own adult store in central Auckland.

We hit it off really well and decided to go into business together and combine the buying power of our 3 stores.

The business boomed really fast and very quickly we bought another 11 stores between us. Prior to this I was at Levine’s, as the NZ development

The most significant influence in my working career was/is I would say – David Levene (owner of Levine’s), he was the most progressive retail company in NZ at the time. Being at the top was always something I strived for, he was such a great leader and mentor to me.

I’m most proud of My kids and how well they have grown up, very proud of them!

One of the most memorable moments was Taking our team to the ‘Cher’ concert, here in Auckland. We hired a limo, had bubbles on the way there, the show was AMAZING and we all had a fantastic time together. It was a real team bonding experience. The show was that great, I decided to fly over to Melbourne and see it again!

Last book I read John Grisham – Grey Mountain. Love his entire collection, wonderful writer. John Burett and Stephen Leather are another couple of my favourites. Absolutely love reading books, one of my ways to relax and chill out.

Favourite TV show X Factor series (UK or Australia versions). So much talent!

My Favourite place leader (house decorating specialists, with them for over 20 years), I got to travel around the world checking out the latest trends and bring back all the knowledge to our brand. This really helped me with how to run retail stores and taught the importance of product training.

Ever on the hunt for a decent sex machine, we were lucky enough to get our hands on the Robo Fuk by Love Botz. Suitable for both men and women it comes complete with realistic accessories, namely a Fleshlight-esque sleeve and a bendable dildo that can be shaped to your preferred angle.

The Lovers’ Dream is another medical grade, silicon rechargeable vibrator but what struck me immediately is the lovely design and shape.

I tried the Sky Blue version, it is an attractive piece and I can see the obvious functional considerations that have gone into it. Boasting 3 vibrating motors, 4 speeds and 5 modes, the Lovers’ Dream has a long insertable shaft with a lovely curved, outside vibrating tip designed as either a clit stim or if reversed, an anal massager. The soft clit stim tip also houses the touch controls, no remote on this one yet, and is ideally placed to stimulate the clitoris whilst the insertable shaft contains a recess on the underside, designed to allow room for the inserted penis.

I grabbed my man, who was as eager as I was, if not more.

The feeling is wonderful fulfilling for the female, there is room for all, everything fits. The vibrating motors are fine, we tried all the settings and had a great play. My man loved it, he said, it was the first couples’ toy that he really actually liked and wanted to use again.

The Lovers Dream stayed in position centrally during penetration, and on the clitoris, due to the recess on the underside and that was a distinct benefit over other devices. We did use a water based lube for this one, it is necessary. Occasionally I needed to hold this toy during penetration, to stop it from sliding out. My favourite, lying on my front, I inserted the Lovers’ Dream vaginally inversed allowing the stimulating tip now to penetrate me anally, whilst my partner inserted vaginally from behind. OMG! All the bells were going off and it was an intense and deep orgasm. Hence, why I state that this toy does work and it is an amazing experience for both the female and male partner.

According to the manufacturer, run time is one hour and fifteen minutes, with a one hour charge. Use a water based lube and wash with soap water. This toy unfortunately doesn’t have a USB cable, and in my version was available only with a US mains power plug. The charging device is a bit clumsy; it uses a clip on ABS plastic piece which clamps onto two round, metal, protruding prongs at the neck of the device.

At first glance the RF seems promising: easily set-up and with one page of simple instructions, it’s neither too big nor too small and you can store it under your bed. The first issue reveals itself when you plug the machine in: unfortunately the mains lead slips out at the slightest provocation – rather frustrating when the entire product is designed around moving parts.

The thrusting itself works very simply: you choose the angle of penetration/ reception by rotating a wheel to lock and unlock the thruster in place, and a dial in your hand which is wired to the RF helps you change the speed of thrusts at will. The RK will stop hammering away when it hits against something too firm: assumedly as a safety measure. Unfortunately, this has a consequence when it comes to slow penetration – or indeed any penetration starting from outside the body – as it leads the RK to stop suddenly. You can get around this by placing the dildo inside you before turning the machine on and then turning the speed up further.

The masturbation sleeve and the dildo are made to look lifelike, but neither are stated to be body-safe or phthalate-free, so we would advise to use both with a condom.

Another cause for concern is the availability of accessories: if you wanted to go for an upmarket silicone strap-on, or indeed a toy from any other brand, you’d find it incompatible with your RF. Even if you wanted to try a different dildo from LoveBotz you’d have difficulty, as the website only sells what you already get in your initial box set.

When the RoboFuk works well it works reeeally well, thrusting tirelessly with unremitting enthusiasm. Hitting all the right spots, it’s an impressive piece of kit.

The Robo Fuk has all the right parts and the potential to hit all the right places, however, decent in principle but disappointing in practice.
