Case Study: Reinventing Gyldendal’s Digital Backend for a Seamless Book Club Experience

Introduction

Gyldendal, founded in 1770, is Denmark’s oldest and largest publishing house, offering a wide collection of fiction and non-fiction books Thousands of readers across Denmark and Scandinavia engage with Gyldendals Bogklubber to discover, discuss, and enjoy curated book selections

However, Gyldendal’s legacy backend struggled under the weight of modern digital demands, especially as they launched a new e-commerce platform They needed a reliable, scalable backend to ensure smooth integration with both modern and legacy systems while providing excellent uptime, fast performance, and future growth potential.

Challenges Faced

Gyldendal aimed to transform its backend architecture to meet the following goals:

• Boost System Reliability — Reduce downtime and guarantee smooth user experiences.

• Integrate Seamlessly Across Systems Ensure smooth communication between the e-commerce platform and various internal tools

• Modernize User Management Provide secure, scalable account handling and login functionality

• Enable Scalable Asynchronous Processing Support heavy workloads (like orders) with minimal delays.

Project Scope & Goals

Our team was responsible for:

1 Building a robust REST API to handle business-critical operations (CRUD, order management, data syncs)

2 Developing new data pipelines and integrating them across Gyldendal’s systems

3. Creating a secure, scalable user login management system with REST APIs and SQL databases

4. Designing a system for asynchronous background processing using Azure cloud services

5 Interfacing legacy systems, including a 24/7 running service for their Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system

Technology Stack Used

• C# 8 0

• NET Framework 4 8

• ASP.NET MVC

• SQL Server

• Windows Services

• Azure Service Bus & Azure Functions

• Apache Solr Server

• Azure DevOps

Implementation Strategy

To modernize Gyldendal’s backend, we adopted a phased, agile approach:

1. Discovery & System Audit Conducted deep-dive workshops with Gyldendal’s teams to identify bottlenecks, legacy dependencies, and integration points

2. Modular Architecture Design Created a flexible, service-oriented architecture (SOA) blueprint that allowed independent scaling of key components like APIs, databases, and background processors

3 API-First Development Developed RESTful APIs with clear documentation, enabling internal teams and external platforms to integrate efficiently.

4 Cloud-Native Task Processing Leveraged Azure Service Bus, Azure Functions, and durable tasks to process high-volume orders and background jobs asynchronously.

Before vs. After Comparison

Aspect

Uptime Frequent interruptions and downtime

24/7 reliable availability, even under heavy traffic

Deployment Time Slow, manual, error-prone processes

Automated CI/CD pipelines reducing deployment time by 70%

Data Handling Efficiency

Fragmented, slow-moving Unified pipelines with real-time syncing and faster performance

Order Processing Manual, long-running tasks

Automated, asynchronous background processing with Azure

Feature Development Speed Rigid, slow to adapt

Key Results & Impact

Modular architecture enabling faster, more agile development

1) Massive Boost in Platform Stability: Delivered near-perfect uptime, ensuring book club members could always access the platform, even during peak campaigns

2) Faster Feature Rollouts: Cut down development and deployment cycles, enabling the marketing and editorial teams to launch new campaigns and features rapidly.

3) Seamless User Experience: Streamlined login, browsing, and purchasing flows, leading to higher member satisfaction and lower cart abandonment rates

4) Enhanced Integration Capabilities: The new architecture made it easier to connect Gyldendal’s modern systems with both legacy tools and third-party services

5) Revenue Growth Through Membership Expansion: The improved digital experience attracted more users to Gyldendals Bogklubber, directly boosting membership numbers and overall revenue

6) Future-Ready Scalability: Positioned Gyldendal to easily handle future growth, new system integrations, and evolving customer needs
