ARTIST: TITLE FIGHT ALBUM: HYPERVIEW RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 3, 2015

If you like something that you can chill too while keeping a punk vibe, this album is for you. Title Fight’s newest album Hyperview is different and unique in it’s own way. Compared to their previous releases, they’ve toned things down a bit. The main noticeable different is the vocals in the album. Although they still have that punk edge within their music, the voice is less present in this release.

They’ve toned down the voice a bit and dropped it back in comparison to the instruments. It’s well done, and really highlights the instrumentals in it. In every single song, you can hear the instruments extremely well and can really feel sounds they make. My favorite song on the album is “Liar’s Love”. It has a chill vibe to it while keeping that punk edge. This is one of the slower songs on the album. One of the faster songs “Rose of Sharon”, speeds things up a bit and has a little less clean vocal sound to it. Each track in Hyperview has it’s own unique tempo and vocal sounds while collectively keeping that chill punk vibe and surprisingly really easy it is to listen to. It’s very fluid and resonates well with someone looking for something to chill to. But that’s what makes this album a good album. It’s something that anyone could easily listen to and pick up.

ARTIST: MISTERWIVES ALBUM: OWN OUR HOUSE RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 24, 2015

The Indie pop band from New York, Misterwives, have are sure to have you dancing and singing along with their impressive debut album, Our Own House.

The five piece teamed up with record producer Frequency who takes their already established sound to the next level. The band draws on their own 80’s influences and uses brass and woodwinds that help give the songs dimension.

The album begins with the title track, an infectious saxophone driven song that explains how the group have created a tight knit musical family among themselves and grown to what they are today. All of the songs on the album are either written or co-written by lead singer Mandy Lee Duffy and her use of personal experiences shine through her writing and lets listeners connect on a deeper level. The album has several tracks off of their EP such as their breakout hit,“Reflections”, which gained a lot of buzz when it was released as a single in August. The song has pop anthem potential and went on to peak at #31 on the US Alternative charts and #14 on the US Rock charts.

Two of the most impressive tracks are “Oceans” and “Hurricane”. The first follows the theme of love and the moderate tempo creates a relaxing, laid back sound. While the other is feel good song about self-empowerment as Mandy sings “We’ll dance to our own beat, won’t sing to your melody/We don’t care if we’re the only/People swimming in the sea, we’ll do this all our own way”. Mandy’s lively voice puts meaning behind her words and it’s the type of song you need to sing along to at the top of your lungs on a long drive.

The album then slows down with the synth driven “Coffins”. Mandy asks “How do you soften the thought of carrying coffins?” The varied instruments help create the mournful mood and show how the band has the ability to make a sad, emotional song that contrasts to their usually happy songs. The album’s closer, “Queens”, again goes on to show that they are easily capable of making sentimental songs that deeply connect to one’s emotions. The song explains the importance of being strong no matter what hardships you go through and being there for others when they need you. Even just two months into the year, I can already see this song –and album– making its way into my end of the year list. Misterwives have only just begun to make their mark on the music scene and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.

Being a photographer whilst having a fierce case of wanderlust, it’s hard for me not to explore and document every document-able moment with my friends in the amazing places we venture to. This adventure was one to Land’s End. Sounds like a strange name for a place but man, was it gorgeous. It’s a beach spot on a literal end of San Francisco, about a two-hour drive from where I live. I had never heard about it until a photographer I follow on Instagram posted a photo from this place and I had to know where it was.

My friend Jenna and I got there around 3pm and walked down a large amount of steps which were quite painful to walk back up, but hey there was our exercise for the day... It was a beautiful overcast day, post-storm, so the waves were huge and raging. I could write a novel about how beautiful this place was... After climbing back up the mountain, or what it seemed like, after a bit we walked the Land’s End Trail for a small distance only to almost interrupt a photographer about to capture a man proposing to his girlfriend! It was adorable and I was probably the most excited bystander who witnessed it… Oops!

The initial reason for trip was because I had a few friends hosting an event down the street from Land’s End, at The Honey Hive Gallery, a DIY art space that displays local artwork and local musician’s music. The event was the launch party of first issue of Sadgirl Zine, a zine about local and international wo(men) in art, and album release show for Wildwoods, ambient and emotional sounds from Northern California, and a special guest appearance by Brave Season, an indie rock/emo band from Yuba City, CA! The show was as fun and intimate as it was charming and a bunch of my friends were hanging out so it was a great time to chill out in San Francisco and support some really awesome and creative people doing what they love to do.

Up first was PVRIS. In the past year, they embarked in several tours including Vans Warped Tour, The Kids Can’t Lose Tour, Too Close to Touch on the Up Close & Personal Tour and more. They successfully did all of this with only having 2 EP’s released. They finally released their debut album, White Noise, via Rise Records in November 2014.

Frankly, their setlist was far too short. Of course, they were only an opening act, but there were many fans there who knew manyif not all- of the songs on their setlist. Kicking off the show with ‘Smoke,’ the first track of their debut album White Noise, the crowd was on their toes within seconds. Afterwards, they played ‘Mirrors’ and ‘Fire.’ Although they only have three members, they brought out a touring drummer, Justin Nace, which made a huge difference had they not done so. This was more evident in their third song, ‘White Noise.’ PVRIS wrapped up their set with ‘St. Patrick’ and ‘My House,’ the two singles off of their latest release.

from their upcoming album releasing this March, Madness. They slowed things down with their acoustic track, “Roger Rabbit” and treated the fans with a cover of “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls. After playing some new songs, they covered U2’s “Bloody Sunday.” Needless to say, SWS made sure to play something for old and new fans.

As fans waited patiently for Pierce the Veil to take the stage, many were speaking to one another about their experiences while waiting in line. Some had waited for hours in the cold while others decided to stay warm and watch from afar. Either way, the moment was finally here. With the curtain hanging and Mike, Tony, Jaime, and Vic’s silhouettes showing, the fans began to chant “Pierce the Veil.” Many who were in the front row were armed with their phones, ready to record and capture everything while thousands were watching online thanks to Yahoo! who was recording PTV’s set. Although it’s been a little over two years since the band has released any new music, fans still remembered every lyric to their songs. They kicked off their set with “May These Noises Startle You In Your Sleep” which smoothly transitioned into “Hell Above” much like in their album Collide With The Sky. Sadly, they didn’t play any songs from their debut album, A Flair for the Dramatic, but they did PVRIS left the crowd wanting more. Kyle Lucas, one of the most influential artists in the hip-hop/alternative music scene, has created works of music that have impressed listeners.

Recently, he has built a buzz in the scene with the newest collaboration release The Blueprint For Going in Circles, with his good friends in the music scene. But it is not just this fantastic release that really helped him earn the spot he has in the music industry. It is a collective matter of the culture he follows as well.

Would you mind introducing yourselves, and tell what each member does in the band?

I’m Ryan -- I do a lot of the writing and production for the band. I also play keys and sing. Adam plays bass and sings, and Jack plays guitar and sample machine and sings.

You guys started off as buskers. How does performing on the streets differ from playing on stage?

We street-performed for a bunch of years to get our start, and I think it prepared us profoundly for what was to come. Busking is the most nerve-racking circumstance to perform in, because you’re playing to a crowd that doesn’t really care. We were playing to thousands of business men on their way home from work, hoping to catch the attention of a few. We haven’t really been nervous in any performing situation since then!

I’ve read that you call your self-created genre “Spokestep”, would you mind explaining what that is?

Yeah of course. Spokestep is a style of music we invented, and we like to incorporate it into our sound. Spokestep uses the same principals as dubstep -- cutting the baseline over a beat -- but applies a similar idea to vocals. In a song like ‘Woody Allen’ for instance, we took the first little “owoah” melody and messed with it over a trapstyle beat; essentially taking a solo with a cut up vocal sample. I hope that explained that well!

Your song I’m Ready currently has over 10 million views on YouTube.

Did you ever think the song would receive so much attention?

We didn’t really think about it at the time we created it. After 8 years of working hard with very little success, I guess it didn’t seem likely that a song of ours would blow up like the way I’m Ready did.

We’re so grateful that it did though.

You just toured with Melanie Martinez, how was that experience?

It was cool! She has a pretty interesting sound--a lot of weird indie horror influence. It’s really different from our sound as a band, but it’s always fun to see the different types of audience we can appeal to.

Have you ever played any particular show on any of your tours that’s been your favorite?

We did a small tour with the rapper Hoodie Allen in the UK last year.

We played the famous Koko theater in London, and it was such an eye-opening experience for the band. Hoodie’s audience is completely made up of college guys in tank-tops, and it’s funny to see that we can win over that demographic too!

What’s the craziest / most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you guys on stage?

We’ve had a lot of strange experiences street-performing. When

we first started out, I guess we didn’t sound that great, so we got some rocks in the hat we put out. We also had a homeless guy steal our microphone, which was pretty traumatic at the time.

What is your favorite song to perform live?

It changes constantly, usually depending on the venue. I’m Ready is always a lot of fun, because the audience can sing the words back at us. But we have a new song that will be released on the album called ‘The Green and the Town,’ that has been a lot of fun to play live. It has a big Mumford-meets-pirate vibe, and people seem to connect with its originality.

You’ve released two great EP’s I’m Ready and Infinity. Your album Living Room comes out on March 3. What made you decide to release an album instead of another EP? The EP’s have been a great way to get a little sample of our sound out there, but we felt that it was time to release a complete body of work. We’re such fans of the ‘album’ as an art-form, and it’s one that seems to be dying. We really worked to make an album that communicates a strong message as a whole, and tells the exact story we wish to tell.

A fan tweeted me wondering if I’d ask you, do you have anything special planned for your album release show at Webster Hall?

A: We have a bunch of cool things planned! We want to somehow make it more than a show--more like an exclusive experience.

I don’t want to give away anything though, you’ll have to come see for yourself!

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

Longevity is something that is important to all of us, and that comes with being authentic. Longevity comes with slow organic grow, and a constant drive to continue to innovate. Our whole goal with this band was to be the street performing, regular ‘music-in-the-livingroom’ guys that just love what they do. No tricks, nothing phony. So I hope we can keep doing that for a long time.

While listening to your EP, the thing that struck me the most was the use of repetition in the lyrics of many of the tracks. For example, in “The Juice”, you have “They don’t know, they don’t know, they don’t know, they don’t know” and “You got the juice, you got the juice, you got the juice, you got the juice”. What was your reasoning behind this repetition and what were you trying to convey with this tactic?

The reasoning behind the repetition was so the song would be catchy and easy to sing along with. When I perform these songs people remember those lines the most and sing them along with me.

For those who have not heard of you how would you describe your music? Who are some of your biggest influences?

I would describe my music as upbeat, pop with a dash of happy... lol I have been influenced by so many people, Kate bush, Madonna, Freddie mercury, nirvana, Alanis Morisette. The list goes on What made you want to become a musician?

When did you decide to pursue music?

I have always love music and singing. I was very shy, but as soon as I realized thats what I wanted, I went after it.

What makes you different from other upand-coming artists?

I am just myself and I am lucky to work with a record company that trusts me and allows me to have creative control over what I am doing.

The video for your first single, “First Kiss” managed to get over 100,000 views in the first week, were you expecting this? What was your recipe for success with this song?

I had no idea that was going to happen, I thought it was a joke. I remember laughing loads when I wrote the song... Maybe thats the trick to a good song? Not sure lol Your second single, “Love Criminal” is set to release in April, how do you expect fans to react to the song? How have they reacted to the video? I’m really happy with the reaction so far.

Everyone seems to dance to it (everyone is doing ‘The Monroe’) The video is so different from first kiss, I got the chance to explore another world in video making... Good times!

What is a “Love Criminal”? What was the inspiration behind the song? How does this song compare to “First Kiss?”

Love criminal is about someone that has stolen your heart unexpectedly and your left just day dreaming of them lol. They are both love songs but i would say that first kiss is slightly more innocent because it is about the feelings you get when having a first kiss with

What was it like working with HitDent and Dallas Austin’s team, who produced music for Destiny’s Child?

That was madness... I met them and didn’t know who they were and then they said their names and that was it for me, i basically imploded- seriously. But they were so cool, really down to earth. I am planning on seeing hit dent soon, maybe in a month or so, hopefully we can work together again.

You said that the songs you wrote with them didn’t sound like you, what was different about them? Do you still plan to release any of the songs?

I am not entirely sure if I would release them, I would love to give them away as they are catchy songs. When I write I am influenced by my surroundings and so when i was in LA and ATL, my song writing reflected a part of those cities, its not a bad thing but at the moment I am all about London.

Can we expect a full length album anytime soon? What would this album sound like?

Oh yes very soon. I have written and recorded a full album, but as we are still focusing on ‘Love criminal’ i am still writing new material

Ghost Town, a four-piece electro rock group, seems to be creating a buzz in the underground music scene. The band’s obsession for pizza and horror pop-culture are just some of the things that helped them gain a loyal fan base as well as the attention from other artists. What started as an alternative reality, soon transformed into their music and touring culture.

Creatively, Ghost Town has created a universe different from reality. It is that universe that has inspired Ghost Town to create a defining sound. Kevin Ghost, lead vocalist, shares that “The world that coexists with our reality--the world that we created not only through the stories in our songs, but through our art work and all our visual aspect,” is what inspires the band. With this, the band is able to create a different experience for their fans. Ghost Town even created their own comic book called The Haunted Youth. Their newest album had a scratch-off like cover on the front that revealed visuals of their alternate world. It’s efforts like these that sets them apart.

Ghost Town’s fan base is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Many fans create “Ghost Art” inspired by their music. This artwork is frequently shared across their social media accounts and soon reaches the band. Many times, Ghost Town will share what they find and encourage others to create their own art and to continue to share it with each other. While on tour, some fans even bring the guys gifts, “We got these awesome skate decks with our artwork hand-painted on them!” shared Kevin. Even though that wasn’t the first time a fan had surprised them with gifts, the guys never cease to feel appreciative by the various efforts from their fans. “It blows our mind that in every single city we go to, around the world, there are so many talented kids that show us their artwork. It blows our minds every day,” says guitarist, Alix Monster.

“This is one of the most inspiring things to us. We come not expecting much. I mean, we’ll have fun and do our best. But to get stuff like this on the first day, before we play one note on stage is so inspiring. It’s cool!” Kevin says in a humble tone. One of the best things about this band is the fact that they tour with so many unique and different artists. The band has opened up for bands like Breathe Carolina, Issues, Black Veil Brides and have been a part of Warped Tour as well as Slam Dunk Festival. MannYtheDrummeR shares that “The bands that we open up for are always different. We may have to learn how to switch the set up for this tour or change songs around just to keep the audience moving.”

Currently on the Black Mass Tour featuring Black Veil Brides and Memphis May Fire, it’s a given that many of these shows will sell out. And with this three-band lineup, it gives Ghost Town the chance to really prove themselves to a new audience. “The fact that there are only three bands is really cool. It gives kids a little bit more to really focus in on instead of just being bombarded with seven or eight bands,” Kevin says in relation to this tour. This tour is great exposure for the band and a great opportunity for attendees to listen to them.

But when it all comes down to the bottom line, Ghost Town creates music for themselves and the fans. The band embraces the term “creepy” so far as to refer to some of their fans as “creepy girls” in their music. Kevin explains that the inspiration for this was fairly simple, “We wanted to pay homage to how much we love creepy girls, and creepy is not a bad thing in our band; the creepier the better.” The band really encourages the idea of people being themselves, whether it be being creepy or doing what you want to do in life.

They hope that their music helps their fans be themselves and to not confirm to the social norm because other people would like them to. Kevin specifically says, “Just do what you want, no matter what you feel the cost would be. Being a musician is a great example. Growing up, a lot people are always like, ‘You need to find a real job! You need to go to school! You need to follow this perfect system!’ It shouldn’t be like that.”

This is what Ghost Town is about. The band often calls their fans “Ghosts.” They’re the people that follow their music and live up to their lifestyle. Ghost Town has created a literal Ghost Town of people involved in this scene through their culture, touring, and music. This band will go far and will continue to create something that hasn’t been seen before- something unique for themselves and their fans.
