HOME AGAIN
A Return to Gracious Interiors
A house is a dwelling and structure, while home evokes the emotions and memories of a life well lived. A home is where the seasons meld into one another and the next thing we know, a decade has flown by. Home welcomes us after long days, work trips, and the ever-changing rhythm of life. In this book, Farmer takes you on a tour of homes that he and his team have designed across the country. From the farmlands of Georgia to the Carolina Lowcountry, the Blue Ridge Mountains to the citrus groves of Florida, to college towns, Martha’s Vineyard, and a cottage in Mississippi, the homes on display are inspirations in traditional Southern style and reminders that traditional décor can set the tone to celebrate our homes.

SOUTHERN SENSIBILITY
The Interiors of Edith-Anne Duncan
Edith-Anne Duncan
There is a unique way of living in the South, a more gracious style with a modern twist. Sophisticated casual interiors with pops of color have always been Edith-Anne’s design aesthetic, as well as a respect for heritage and history. Growing up as a child in the South, Edith-Anne’s family home was filled with inherited furnishings mixed with modern touches of chinoiserie and unexpected moments, like a white leather bench with emerald-green piping. The homes featured in Southern Sensibility are meant to offer a balance between family time, cherished moments, and everyday modern life. It should welcome guests and family with open arms, where nothing is too precious, but everything is thoughtfully beautiful.

MODERN WEST
Chase Reynolds Ewald • Photographs by Audrey Hall
Chosen for proximity to skiing, lake views, and mountain living, the homes in Modern West are carefully crafted, professionally built, and expertly designed to highlight western living. A dated, dark log home becomes an industrial-feeling space infused with light in Park City; proportion, scale, harmony, and the interplay of shadow and light take front and center in a mountain home designed from the ground up in Sun Valley; and a house in Santa Fe made for guests and entertaining features open spaces using wood, stucco, and rusted metal to create a neutral but textured backdrop for rooms invested with a New Mexico modernist aesthetic. In this book, modern materials mix with traditional western design and décor to create more than a dozen gorgeous homes worth celebrating.

JOHN HAFEN
Utah’s Poet Painter
Vern Grosvenor Swanson and Angela Swanson Jones
In his short life as an artist, John Hafen (1856–1910) earned the title of Utah’s “poet painter.” He searched for the universal and eternal beauty underlying the mountains and rural nature. While he vigorously eschewed commercialism in art, because of dire poverty and a large family (10 children) he was continually “forced” to paint quick pictures for the trade just to get by from day to day. His contributions to Utah art were profound and longlasting. He was the instigator of the Paris art mission and the lead painter of the murals in the Salt Lake Temple. He began the art department at Brigham Young Academy (now BYU), cofounded the Springville Museum of Art, and cofounded the Utah Art Institute.

VERN GROSVENOR SWANSON, PHD, studied at BYU and the University of Utah, and received his doctorate at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. He was the museum aide supervisor at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and director of the Springville Museum of Art for thirty-two years. His authored publications include J.W. Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism, and 15 other titles. He lives in Springville, Utah, with his wife, Judy.
ANGELA SWANSON JONES, MA, is a graduate of BYU and holds an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. She serves as exhibition director of the International Art Renewal Center Salon. Angela has published articles with Fine Art Connoisseur and has co-authored the books Desperately Young: Artists Who Died in their Twenties and Dictionary of Utah Fine Artists. Angela resides in Fairview, Texas, with her husband, Jason, and three children.

CRUISING J-TOWN
Japanese American Car Culture in Los Angeles
Oliver Wang • Foreword by George Takei
Generations of Japanese Americans in Southern California shaped, and were shaped by, local automobile cultures and industries: from desert lake beds to concrete speedways, gas stations to design centers, souped-up import tuners to humble gardening trucks. Along the way, cars and trucks became literal and figurative vehicles for Japanese American self-expression, social mobility, community identity, and much more. Interviews and oral histories chronicle the people and stories behind how Japanese Americans have played vital roles in countless car scenes throughout the region. Cruising J-Town is filled with vintage and contemporary photographs, drawings and ephemera that bring the story to life.

ELEMENTS OF LOS ANGELES
Earth, Water, Air, and Fire
D.J. Waldie • Foreword by Rosecrans Baldwin

Elements of Los Angeles, the third volume in D.J. Waldie’s trilogy of essay collections centered on his search for a sense of place in Los Angeles, evokes the classical elements of earth, water, air, and fire. In Where We Are Now Becoming Los Angeles, and now in Elements of Los Angeles, Waldie has assembled a panorama of a city both tragic and intensely moving. Called “one of the most respected contemporary voices on life in Southern California,” by the New Yorker and “one of the most artful authors writing about Los Angeles today” by the Library Foundation of Los Angeles, Waldie elegantly blends history, memoir, and contemplative observation, providing a portrait of the elements that illuminates the city as a whole. A writer whose books are a “gorgeous distillation of architectural and social history” (New York Times), D.J. WALDIE is the author of the acclaimed Holy Land: A Suburban Memoir and other books about the everyday life in Southern California. In his essays and commentary, Waldie has sought to frame his experience of Los Angeles as a search for a sense of place.

MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN
Marci Kay Monson • Illustrated by Greg Paprocki
The Mystery of the Blue Train is one of Agatha Christie’s early detective novels (a cozy mystery—no violence or gore), and where she continues to use the fictional detective Hercule Poirot as a major character. The story, set on a train bound for the French Riviera, is a true who-done-it full of mysterious characters, missing jewels, and teasing clues. Monson’s retelling of the original book captures the plot and distills it in a way that is fun for children, gently ushering them into the literary world of Christie’s mysteries.
Along with the story, there are activities, games, and puzzles throughout to engage children and foster budding detectives. There is also a glossary of terms and French words.

MARCI KAY MONSON is an avid reader, crafter, and gardener. She received her BS in Technical Communications from Utah State University and a graduate certificate in publishing from the Denver Publishing Institute. She found a love for Agatha Christie when her book club read And Then There Were None and never looked back. She loves story, bright colors, and a little bit of (cozy and fictional) murder. Raised in Japan, England, and Germany, she now lives in Layton, Utah.

PIECES OF ME
An Ode to Growing Up Asian
Gwen Sung • Illustrated by Joanne Shi
As children return to school, a new friend is curious what language Lucy speaks and where she is from. Throughout the day, the new friends huddle around the globe to see where they have family and friends, share their deliciously different lunches, and think about the puzzle pieces that make each of them unique.
This upbeat and heartwarming story celebrates the diversity within us all, encouraging children to embrace every piece of their unique heritage. Perfect for young readers navigating a colorful multicultural world, Pieces of Me is a joyful reminder that our differences make us shine!

GWEN SUNG resides in New Jersey with her husband, two young kids, and a chill dog. Gwen is a product design leader by day and the creative mind behind a small business by night, a journey she started after becoming a mom and discovering passion and purpose in passing on her family’s traditions and culture.
JOANNE SHI is a mama of three boys, licensed therapist, and an avid doodler. She wears many hats in life, but one of her main goals is to spread wonder and hope through her artwork. She believes in the importance of being a light in an often dark world and hopes her doodles can bring a smile on the hardest days.

SILLY SHRIMPHONY
A Bilingual Book in English and Chinese
Katherine Chow • Illustrated by Jordan Eusebio
When Quinn joins the symphony orchestra for the first time, he’s met with a cacophony of clashing sounds. The toot toot of the flute . . the plucka ding ding of the pipa . . the bah dum of the tuba . . what a mess! Will these silly shrimp every learn to play together?
With playful onomatopoeia and bright, colorful illustrations, Silly Shrimphony is an exciting celebration of eastern and western instruments, melodies and harmonies, and the magic of teamwork.

KATHERINE CHOW is a devoted mother of three, happily married to her husband, Josh. Born in Taiwan and raised in Singapore, Australia, and Texas, she is fluent in Mandarin, thanks to her mother’s Taiwanese heritage. As a former elementary school teacher, she finds joy in creating storylines that spark interest and wonder in young readers. She now resides in Colorado.
JORDAN EUSEBIO is a Filipino-Chinese American artist in Los Angeles, California. When not pushing pixels as a graphic designer, she’s illustrating silly shenanigans inspired by her interests such as art, music, the ocean, groan-worthy puns, and fantasy or mashing together different concepts into funny, whimsical, and weird art.

Come Back, Salmon
“An inspiring story of young scientists in action. Candid color photos of boys and girls of several ethnic groups, plus a text based on recorded conversations with the kids, lend drama and immediacy; additional scientific facts (e.g., how salmon scales tell the age of the fish; how salmon build a nest or ‘redd’) appear in boxes.”
—Kirkus

Welcome to Fall 2025 at Gibbs Smith!
Gibbs Smith is an employee-owned, majority female-owned, mission-driven B Corp that believes in our people, our communities, and our customers. You can learn more about our B Corp values and impact on our website at gibbssmith.com/pages/b-corp. One of our favorite programs, because it serves both our people and our communities, is our annual service initiative. During April of each year, we encourage employee-owners to take eight hours of paid leave and donate time and “give back” to their local communities. We create a crowdsourced spreadsheet of local-to-each volunteer opportunities, including everything from donating blood and clothing, volunteering time, supporting local businesses, and sending cards to those battling illness.
Fall 2025 offers some amazing coffee table and gift books, starting with the mind-blowingly beautiful Parklands (page 10) by Jacob W. Frank, a visual odyssey through America’s most spectacular national parks and public lands, which are regularly finding themselves in the media. Merry & Chic (page 9) by Kathryn O’Shea-Evans is a gorgeous and sumptuous look at all things home design and decorating for the holidays . . . and it’s never too early to start celebrating! Boots, Buckles & Bolos (page 11) by photographer Jim Arndt, is an amazingly detailed look at the fashion of the American West, made highly popular again on the runways and in popular TV series. John Hafen: Utah’s Poet Painter (page 12) by the father and daughter team Vern Grosvenor Swanson and Angela Swanson Jones, brings us, often in his own words, the life and art of this quintessential Utah artist.
We have two new additions to the What I Know About series (page 13), What I Know About Cowboys and What I Know About Gratitude. Our two bestselling adult coloring book lines continue with Fairytale Worlds (page 14) by Maria Trolle employing a fresh cover art style and Merry Christmas (page 15) by Hanna Karlzon, already a worldwide bestseller in its original Swedish edition.
Gibbs Smith Gift adds three new iconic images to its line of Jiggie puzzles (Record Player, Boombox, and Lucky Cat), a Mark the Year bookmark box featuring beautiful birth month flowers, and a 1000-piece Greetings from Los Angles puzzle. Find them on pages 45–47.
You’ll find our robust line of gift items in the General Backlist and Sideline sections of the catalog, and check out the rest of our new books— from interior design to cookbooks to children’s. We absolutely have something to interest you and your customers.
Thank you as always for your continued, and much appreciated, support of Gibbs Smith Book & Gift.
All the best,
The Employee Owners of Gibbs Smith
