EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

W

e’re BACK! Sorry for the hiatus. It has been a difficult several months for all of us. However, thanks to a very loyal dealer member base, I can say that that WSIADA is firing on all cylinders!

I hope that our dealers are having similar success. This column is going to be a potpourri of announcements, reviews and summaries.

WSIADA Store We are now open, although complying the minimal in store occupancy of 3 dealers at a time. That turns out to be no big deal as we rarely have more than a couple dealers at a time in the store.

we are launching in place of the Education Fairs. I know you cannot beat the face time with other dealers and our Associate Members, but it is just something we cannot pull off in the Covid-19 environment. We were looking forward to trying out our new Western WA venue. There is always next year. Watch for QuickCover and WSIADA.com for calendar updates surrounding the Webinar calendar.

I need to ask you to be patient with staff when you call, for whatever reason. I have Webstore received some feedback that is surprising and unacceptable on the way a small group of You, our dealers, have been very loyal to our online Webstore. We thank you for that loyaltly! you treat staff when you call in. Remember, our only purpose is to serve you, our members. We were able to recently initiate the dealer pick up option so the local dealers could avoid However, verbal abuse and language is NEVER acceptable. shipping charges.

NEWS UPDATES

A Word from the Washington Department of Transportation

Corrections We try to capture all the mistakes, but some just slip through.

L

ater this year, WSDOT will make changes to our Good To Go! billing system which will give us the ability to mail toll bills to dealership plates for trips made on toll roads. With our existing system, we have been unable to mail toll bills for dealership plates, even though they are subject to paying tolls.

We encourage you to open a Good To Go! account as it will help save money, and will make managing your fleet of vehicles easier. The process is simple and can be done online at MyGoodToGo.com, in-person at one of our customer service centers, or over the phone by calling 1-866-936-8246. Further information about tolling including facility locations, rates and how to pay is available online as well as on the WSDOT app. We understand that this is a change for your company and we are happy to answer all your Good To Go! and tolling questions, so please don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-866-936-8246.

[1] Nov/Dec 2019 Insurance Corner: Some of you may have read with interest Todd Shepard’s article with a disjointed opening paragraph. It was our OOPS. The first paragraph from Todd’s previous column got stuck on the front end of his new column, which a acutally started with, “As a dealership owner…” [2] We gave incomplete credit for the Tire Hieroglyphics article on page 14 in the November/December issue. The article was a reprint from The Star: Mercedes-Benz Club of America. John Goux wrote the article, but many of you probably thought, who the heck is John Goux, now you know.

McConkey Auction Group Launches magauctions.com Independent auction company consolidates online presence. Spokane, WA – McConkey Auction Group (MAG) is excited to announce the launch of MAGauctions.com, a website that includes all its wholesale auction businesses. Prior to its development and June 12th launch, the company had separate websites for DAA Northwest, DAA Seattle, and its motorsports division. One of the tools magauctions. com provides is a comprehensive sale calendar. Dealers can now view all scheduled MAG events in a single online location. “The calendar development was a priority when we began the project,” says Mitzi VanVoorhis, MAG’s VP of Marketing. “We started working on the new website before COVID-19 hit – the rapid pace of change since then has made the calendar a go-to tool,” she adds. In addition to the calendar and information about DAA Northwest, DAA Seattle, MAG Now, MAG Motorsports and MAG RVs, magauctions.com provides

dealers with entry to both EBlock and Edge Pipeline. The McConkey Auction Group served as a beta location for EBlock earlier in the year; its MAG Now auctions are powered by EBlock and take place every Wednesday at 1:00 PM (PT). MAG’s weekly DAA Northwest and DAA Seattle auctions are offered via Edge Simulcast. Future magauctions.com plans include the integration of new dealer tools. “We are in a time of digital transformation,” says Bob McConkey, President and CEO of MAG. “Our new website is one avenue we have employed to supplement our hands-on, relationship-based service,” he adds. McConkey Auction Group (MAG) is an independent, wholesale auto and specialty auction company headquartered in Spokane, Washington. MAG’s auctions include DAA Northwest, DAA Seattle, MAG Now, MAG Motorsports, and MAG RVs. The company is a member of the National Auto Auction Association and ServNet, America’s premier independent auto auction network. For more information, contact Mitzi VanVoorhis at mvanvoorhis@magauctions.com or (509) 220.4866. the Front Row | wsiada.com | Special Edition Fall 2020 |

9 Tips

for Working with Your Spouse

By Nancy Friedman, Founder/President Telephone Doctor Customer Service

S

ince we’ve been married, my husband and I have had four successful startups. Three were his start ups and I helped him. And one was my start up and he helped me.

During most interviews I’ve done, the one question that comes up consistently, is: “Nancy, you’re with Dick 24/7/365. How on earth do you do that; how does that work?”

The lessons that apply to husband/wife teams can also apply to working with siblings and close friends.

Successful START UP Tips for Working with your Spouse Honey, sweetheart, darling, love of my life, etc. are for use in the kitchen – not your business. Using our first name still showed our customers we’re a family friendly business. We certainly do have our pet names we use in the home (not to be given here…LOL), but not in the business world.

1

We did, as you might imagine, had and yet worked through some of the tough times, and there were a few, not many, but yes, a few.

Leave your ego at the door. If you went into 2 business “together” that’s so important. If you were brought in later down the line, it’s still critically important. It just could be more difficult. Getting credit is important. We all need it. Or do we and is it? Or does it simply mean ‘we got it done.’ That’s something only the two of you can answer. We went with the ‘we got it done’ part. Sometimes it was his idea; sometimes mine. We drank to the idea. Not the person.

Here are a few tips that made all 4 of our startups successful. And I might add these are in NO PARTICULAR ORDER. Nor did we have any of these written down ahead of time. They just ‘were!’

Did you see the word: “WE” in there? That’s a key word in working with your spouse – WE. Using it often helps maintain the idea. Even when it was one of our own ideas, we used the word “WE.” We took the applause together. Still do.

Without missing a beat, our answer is: “We didn’t know it wasn’t supposed to work.” Buy IN Is crucial.

Don’t ever, ever lose your 3 sense of humor. Ever. There is humor in most everything and if you’re having trouble finding it, think of San Juan, Puerto Rico, or the Bahamas, or 9/11, or your friend with cancer. In the long run, it usually can be worse. Complainers and blamers don’t make great partners. Alone time is mandatory. 4 Both alone, alone, and together alone. It’s back to ‘dating’ and spending time ‘together.’ Especially making the time ‘when you feel there is no time. We make time for what we feel is important. It doesn’t need to be hours and hours. Even a short dinner at a fast food restaurant can work. But a nice dinner with a glass of wine to relax and share good thoughts works well, too. Neither Dick or I have any great hobbies like golf, tennis, bridge, hiking, and so many others that often keep spouses apart too long. Most of our dinners were “alone together.” We enjoy each other. Oddly, still do. Something bothering you. Do not ‘emotionally leak’ on your spouse. Or anyone in your business. Flat tire? Gained weight? Argue with kids? Whatever. If it didn’t involve the spouse, don’t take it out on the spouse. Emotional leakage is getting mad at Peter & taking it out on Paul. Not right, not fair, not fun.

5

Don’t take the negative situation from someone/something else and put it on your spouse. And sadly, it’s easy to do, mostly because of our unconditional love for each other. Sort of “we know we can, they’ll forgive me.” Sure, we will; however, we don’t like it. And it happens all the time. We don’t enjoy it when a customer ‘leaks’ on us, do we? Something happened to them unrelated to us and they take it out on us. They leak too. But we’re just not about to say, “Hey, stop leaking on me.”

Working 24/7/365 is NOT for 6 everyone. I wouldn’t push it on others. Sometimes it sounds like a great idea. Some folks are not aware of what’s involved with working with a spouse. And since most of us are not psychiatrists, we need to stay out of that suggestion. Even the best of couples working together can have issues. It’s HOW those issues are handled that makes the success. (That’s a whole ‘nother article.) Bringing KIDS into the fold? 7 Not able to say good, bad or indifferent on this one. I can tell you what we did. And it worked. When our son said he wanted to come into the business after graduating college we said, “Sure that’s super. However, we need you to get hired somewhere else for a year to see how working outside the family business is. It’s not always reality.” While he wasn’t thrilled with the option, he went and got a ‘real’ job at a big company and one year later came back and asked that we hire him. We did and he’s been around ‘forever.’ We did have some ground rules. I wasn’t MOM and Dick wasn’t DAD in our 9-5 working environment. We were Nancy & Dick. Then after 5 we were MOM and DAD again. Could he deal with that?

10 | the Front Row | wsiada.com | Special Edition Fall 2020

“Let’s find out,” he said. Again, it worked for us. No respect was lost by calling us by our first names. In fact, it made us closer.

Never, never, never go to bed angry with each other. NEVER! No more needs to be said on this.

INSURANCE CORNER

Thinking Outside the Fishbowl

By Todd Shepard, Owner Shepard & Shephard Insurance

W

hat a great phone call! Your prospect is on his way to the dealership to see the blue Challenger on the front line and he’s bringing his tax refund with him. What’s next? You warm it up, wash the exterior if needed, and make sure it’s standing tall. Afterall, the first impression is the most important when your prospect comes to look at a car and anything you can do to make this experience more enticing to your prospect is worth the effort. Before he shows up you take one last look, everything is perfect, right? If you are like many busy business owners, you may want to look again. Sure, the car may look like new but what about your facility? Do your efforts to present a clean car mirror your efforts to present a clean dealership that encourages your prospect to consider making their second largest (or maybe even their largest) purchase from

you? If not, maybe a bit of Spring Cleaning is in order. Years ago, I had the distinct pleasure of being involved as the sales manager with a start-up dealer who built a brand-new facility. Business was growing and the day-to day-challenges of business growth, employees, and customers was taking its toll on the focus of cleanliness and organization. Although it was busy, the service department was a mess with boxes, old parts, and junk sitting around. The owner and service manager suffered from what I call “inside the fishbowl disease”, meaning they were only looking outward and had no concept of what things looked like from the customer’s perspective.

that this was his facility. It worked! I showed the owner the photos and he immediately began asking if this was taken at his competitor and scoffing at what a mess it was. The final photo included his business sign. It was a punch in the stomach—but within hours, the entire staff was engaged in clean-up operations. With the fishbowl disease cured and the clutter removed, this is now one of the nicest and most successful dealers in the area. As a bonus, the service department was so nice and presentable the salespeople began offering quick tours at the end of the test drive—building more confidence and gross!

If increasing prospects’ confidence to buy from you and increasing the opportunity for greater gross profit I knew the owner would not sit are not enough incentive to seek a still and listen to any constructive cure for fishbowl disease, I encourcriticism so I decided to take some age you to consider the value of photos using different angles as to avoid signage or other tell-tale signs loss prevention.

Clutter, exposed and unnecessary equipment, old tires, chipped paint, rough siding, exposed wiring, old signs, and unmarked steps—these are just a few of the common causes of slips, trips, cuts and scrapes to your staff, customers and prospects, which translate directly to insurance claims and losses.

Government Update

By Shaun Petersen NIADA Senior V.P. Legal and Government Affairs

N

IADA is your voice in Washington D.C., advocating for independent dealers, the used vehicle industry and small business. Here’s a look at the latest news and NIADA efforts regarding legislative, regulatory and grass roots activities.

LEGISLATIVE

At press time, the Democratcontrolled House of Representatives and the Republican-controlled Senate remained in a standoff over the next phase of COVID-19 relief legislation. In May, the House passed the Heroes Act, a $3 trillion package that includes $1 trillion in aid to state and local governments, another round of stimulus checks to individual Americans and an extension of the $600 per week enhanced unemployment benefit. In July, Senate Republicans introduced a series of bills – collectively called the Health,

Economic Assistance, Liability Protection and Schools Act – totaling $1 trillion in spending. The HEALS Act also includes stimulus payments, but does not include state and local funding, and would substantially reduce the unemployment benefit to $200 initially, then matching 70 percent of lost wages when added to state benefits. It would also put another $190 billion into the Paycheck Protection Program and allow small businesses to take out a second PPP loan. As the two sides attempt to negotiate an agreement, NIADA has been actively supporting several bills related to the COVID-19 pandemic. One is S. 4117, the Paycheck Protection Small Business Forgiveness Act, which would provide automatic forgiveness for PPP loans of less than $150,000, requiring only submission of a one-page form. Currently, businesses must show they have met certain conditions regarding how and when

16 | the Front Row | wsiada.com | Special Edition Fall 2020

EDITOR’S NOTE: Those of you who read the NIADA magazine may have already seen the attached. I thought the information was important enough to include in our magazine as well. ~ Todd Elliott

the funds are used to have the loans forgiven. Another is S. 4317, the Safe to Work Act, which is part of the HEALS Act. The bill would provide a five-year liability shield to prevent businesses, schools and hospitals from being sued over coronavirusrelated issues. The liability shield has been on the Republicans’ radar almost since the pandemic began in March, but it has been opposed by Democrats. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the lack of such a shield would “dramatically slow” the nation’s economic recovery. NIADA is also seeking additional targeted assistance for certain small businesses, including additional PPP funds for the businesses that need it most.

REGULATORY

Federal Trade Commission: Three years ago, the FTC began an in-

depth qualitative study focusing on the experiences of 38 consumers who had recently purchased and financed a vehicle through a dealer. The results of that study were released in July, and the report, called Buckle Up: Navigating Auto Sales and Financing, includes areas in which dealers were less than transparent about the sales and finance processes, leading to customer confusion. The FTC said the single greatest area of confusion involved ancillary products like service contracts or GAP. Customers were often confused as to whether such addons were mandatory, sold in a package or bundle, or included free with their purchase. Many didn’t understand the limitations of the products. Among other issues highlighted by the FTC was a finding that consumers can be unaware of key terms in sales and finance contracts, often because the negotiations tend to focus primarily on monthly payment. The commission said that approach can leave consumers in the dark about other important financial variables, such as down payment, length of financing and annual

percentage rate. Even a seemingly simple term like price was often confusing – it could mean sticker price, out-the-door price, total sales price or something else.

PAC

The report also addressed issues in advertising, negotiations, reviewing and signing documents, and renegotiating financing.

On Aug. 17, the NIADA legislative committee held a virtual Q&A with Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), who took questions from the committee about the Congressional battle over the next phase of COVID-19 relief legislation, the Paycheck Protection Program, the federal budget and more.

To read the complete report visit www.ftc.gov/system/files/ documents/reports/bucklenavigating-auto-sales-financing/ bcpstaffreportautofinancing_0.pdf

Cuellar is a longtime friend of NIADA and the used vehicle industry, and was a featured speaker at NIADA’s 2015 National Policy Conference in Washington D.C.

Department of Labor: DOL has launched an online tool that can help you determine whether your employees are eligible for COVIDrelated benefits under the Families First Coronavirus Relief Act.

In June, his leadership and willingness to reach across the aisle to promote legislation that helps small business was recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which selected him for three awards – the JeffersonHamilton Award for Bipartisanship, the Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award and the Spirit of Enterprise Award for his support of pro-job, pro-growth policies.

While the tool is currently set up for employees, employers can use it to check if they are obligated to provide paid sick leave or paid expanded family and medical leave for staff members. You can access the tool through the NIADA COVID-19 Resource page at covid19.niada.com. Click on “Determining Your FFCRA Eligibility.”

“I always keep in mind the words of John F. Kennedy, who said there’s not a Republican idea that’s the best idea and there’s not a Democrat idea that’s the best idea,” Cuellar said. “Wherever the idea comes from, you look at what’s best for the country.”
