nfections acquired at hospitals are one of the top five causes of death in the United States. Somewhere between 5 and 10% of all patients admitted to a hospital will acquire an infection. Over the past few decades, the microorganisms have mutated into antibiotic and disinfectant resistant strains, making the resulting morbidity/mortality of healthcare associated infections much greater and threatening. Until recently more attention has been placed on the importance of achieving an infection rate of “zero” and a campaign is underway to convince staff and hospital administrators that this is an important and achievable goal.
