SEASON

2012

A MESSAGE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTORS Hello! Nice to see you again. Our Season Ticket Holders are important to us because they know us the best: our exuberant highs and our moody lows; our lovingly interpreted classics and our out-there moments; the favourite and familiar faces, and the newcomers who take their first professional steps on STC stages. After the American influences of our 2010 program and the Euromodern accent of 2011, we found inspiration closer to home for 2012. There are four new Australian works – from the brooding psychological mystery of The Splinter to the acerbic comedy of Jonathan Biggins’ very funny new play Australia Day – as well as two new Australian adaptations. We’ll be reimagining an Ingmar Bergman film for the stage, presenting Sydney’s first chance to see renowned novelist Tim Winton’s work as a playwright, working with physical theatre company Force Majeure, with puppets, and with a couple of randy Scots.

Treading the boards will be some of our finest actors. We’re thrilled Jack Thompson will be returning to the stage to star alongside the ever-fabulous Sandy Gore in Dylan Thomas’ poetic classic Under Milk Wood. Hugo Weaving, Pamela Rabe, Greta Scacchi, Bille Brown, Barry Otto, Alison Whyte, Wendy Hughes, John Gaden, Kerry Fox – a throng of internationally acclaimed Australian actors will be returning to STC. The fiercely talented Jessica Marais plays the feisty Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion and hot up-and-comer Ryan Corr makes his STC debut opposite Jacqueline McKenzie in the intergenerational rom-com Sex with Strangers. We’ve picked the plays – we’d love you to join us in bringing them to life. Hope to see you back in 2012.

ANDREW AND CATE

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, FORCE MAJEURE AND SYDNEY FESTIVAL PRESENT

NEVER DID ME ANY HARM DEVISED BY FORCE MAJEURE

Our first show of 2012 is the result of a bountiful collaboration with our friends at physical theatre company Force Majeure. Over the past few decades the word ‘parenting’ has crept insidiously, almost imperceptibly, into our vernacular bringing with it increasing anxiety around issues of raising children. Is the pressure to get it right overwhelming us? And what is ‘good parenting’ anyway? Are children today given too much choice? Too few boundaries? Less chance to take risks? Are they protected from notions of failure? Sexualised too young? Drawing inspiration from Christos Tsiolkas’ best-selling novel The Slap, Force Majeure’s Artistic Director Kate Champion and her company interviewed people of all ages and backgrounds to garner their views on the subject of parenting. In a familiar, yet disconcertingly Lynchian, Aussie backyard seven actors and dancers create a myriad of familiar characters from the verbatim text that they collected. Director and choreographer Kate Champion (Not in a Million Years, The Age I’m In) is known for making work that transforms the familiar and domestic into the poetic. We’re thrilled to have joined forces with her award-winning company to present Never Did Me Any Harm in collaboration with long-term partner of both companies, Sydney Festival.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

PYGMALION BY GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

In one of the great transformative tales of all time, a feral young flower seller glimpses an opportunity to elevate herself in society and boldly snatches at it, naïve to the potential cost of doing so. It’s a decision that sees the now iconic character Eliza Doolittle transported into the aristocratic world of one Professor Henry Higgins, where she becomes the subject of a wager between the phonetics expert and his friend Colonel Pickering. Higgins bets that within six months he can turn the wild, cockney Eliza into a lady so refined she could pass for a duchess. It’s a matter of professional pride and intellectual curiosity for Higgins. For Eliza it is a matter of infinitely more complexity. Taking its name from the Greek myth about the sculptor who fell in love with his statue, George Bernard Shaw’s enduringly popular play Pygmalion has in turn inspired interpretations as diverse as My Fair Lady, Educating Rita and the eighties’ Hollywood flick Pretty Woman. Shaw’s story is one of rags to relative riches but his Eliza is no Cinderella and Higgins is certainly no Prince Charming. In Peter Evans’ new production the vivacious Jessica Marais will play the original feisty flower-girl.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, MERRIGONG THEATRE CO AND RICHARD JORDAN PRODUCTIONS PRESENT THE TRAVERSE THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTION OF

MIDSUMMER (A PLAY WITH SONGS) BY DAVID GREIG AND GORDON MCINTYRE

It’s midsummer in Edinburgh. And, of course, it’s raining. Helena, a divorce lawyer, and Bob, a petty criminal, were strangers until only a few hours ago. Now they stumble to Helena’s apartment where they share a drunken but surprisingly enjoyable one night stand. Then they say goodbye. After all, these two romantic failures agree that ‘love is just another word for need’. The Berocca has yet to kick in when chance reunites the two and, through the hangover haze, they make the wildly impulsive decision to spend the 25 grand of hot cash that Bob is en route to deliver to a low-level gangster. So begins the legendary lost weekend; a joyous 24-hour spending spree that sends Bob and Helena spinning through the soggy city. As they roam the familiar streets the unlikely pair discovers that even the most committed solitaries have the potential to change direction. A hit at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival, this romantic comedy with songs was created for the Traverse Theatre by playwright David Greig and Gordon McIntyre of indie folk-rock group Ballboy. With more than a dollop of Scottish toughness, Midsummer (a play with songs) is an ocean away from the shimmering Hollywood rom-coms that have skewed Helena’s ideas about love. These characters are real and watching them break the shackles of everyday life with a reckless act of rebellion is both liberating and uplifting.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY AND UBS INVESTMENT BANK PRESENT

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES BY CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON FROM THE NOVEL BY CHODERLOS DE LACLOS

Unaware of the impending revolution that breathlessly waits to devour the French aristocracy in all its decadence, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont plot an elaborate game of revenge, seduction, humiliation and cruelty. It is a salon amusement that soon escalates into a brutal battle between former lovers. Sex and love are the weapons of choice and these combatants will stoop to the lowest levels of deviousness in order to win. Their crossfire is indiscriminate, making casualties of friends and foes alike. Hugo Weaving and Pamela Rabe will play the charismatic duo who manipulate with the precision and discipline of master puppeteers, deriving a pleasure from their spite that can only be surpassed by the pleasure of watching the deliciously wicked pair in action. The sexual politics at work in this gripping drama are as relevant now as when Laclos wrote the novel in 1782 and when Christopher Hampton adapted it for the stage in 1985. Avoiding the lavish clichés often associated with the period, this new production directed by Griffin Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Sam Strong, will acid-wash a familiar story, stripping it back to its essential layers in the intimacy of the Wharf 1 Theatre.

A play with voices

18

By Dylan Thomas

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

UNDER MILK WOOD A PLAY WITH VOICES BY DYLAN THOMAS

A chorus of voices beckons us into the small Welsh town Llareggub, through streets, houses, bedrooms and on into the townspeople’s dreams. Borne along by beautiful voices and rich musical language, we follow the residents as they wake, rise, go about their day then drink and prepare to dream again. Through sketches and caricatures we glimpse moments in the life of the small town. We meet Mr Pugh who fantasises about poisoning his poisonous wife; Captain Cat who hears the voice of his dead love whenever he shuts his eyes; Willy Nilly the nosy local postman; Mr Dai Bread and his two wives; the lovely school teacher, Miss Gossamer, who longingly watches Sinbad the Sailor; and Mr Beyon, a butcher who mercilessly teases his wife about the origins of his choice cuts. An elegy for a time past, Dylan Thomas’ exquisite play for voices was written to prove that there could still be beauty in a post-nuclear world. Like Wilder’s Our Town, Under Milk Wood is a warming celebration of humanity that also casts a cool eye on failed relationships, thwarted lives and the oppressive clutter of small town existence. With a cast of entrancing voices – headed by Jack Thompson in the role Dylan Thomas imagined for himself but never got a chance to play – Andrew Upton’s production of Under Milk Wood really is for lovers of language.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY AND MALTHOUSE THEATRE PRESENT

THE HISTRIONIC (DER THEATERMACHER) BY THOMAS BERNHARD TRANSLATED BY TOM WRIGHT

Utzbach. A town with 280 human inhabitants, a pig population of slightly more and a pubcum-theatre named The Black Hart. It’s a venue that could not be more different to the glittering Gaspoltshofen where Bruscon – an actor often described (by himself) as a national treasure – once performed to an adoring audience of 830. Utzbach represents a terrible low in Bruscon’s career but, ever the consummate professional, he is determined that the show he is touring to this cultural backwater will go on. Preparing this dump for his theatrical extravaganza is a piece of theatre in itself. As a mighty storm gathers overhead, the petty tyrant issues directions to his family-cum-cast. With the Landlord, the Fire Chief, the pigs, the troupe, the town and even the elements conspiring against him, making it to the curtain call could be the greatest challenge Bruscon has ever faced. Thomas Bernhard is one of Europe’s most revered authors and we have long been plotting to bring one of his works to our stage. The perfect opportunity presented itself when Melbourne director Daniel Schlusser met Bille Brown and realised that this great man of the theatre was ripe for the role of Bruscon. The play is a gift to an Olympian like Bille: an opportunity to travel at full throttle through monologues that are laden with both comedy and tragedy. The Landlord, whose efforts to assist preparations for the show are passively antagonistic, will be played by a worthy adversary: Barry Otto.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

FACE TO FACE A FILM BY INGMAR BERGMAN ADAPTED FOR THE STAGE BY ANDREW UPTON & SIMON STONE Something is wrong with Jenny but not even she can understand what. She is a woman with both a family and a brilliant career as a psychiatrist. She is intelligent, educated, well adjusted and capable. So, why can’t she sleep at night? And why is it that when she does she is plagued by vivid, terrifying dreams? When something violent and disturbing happens, Jenny finds her response even more alarming than the incident itself. Shaken to the core, she realises that she has ceased to feel anything: no love, no joy, no fear. And so begins Jenny’s gradual disintegration and a psychological journey through dreams, the past and eventually the present. Simon Stone and Andrew Upton’s adaptation of the Ingmar Bergman film preserves the tonal, thematic and psychological textures of the original, while drawing out the epic theatrical possibilities that the screenplay offers. Face to Face is, like so many of Bergman’s texts, a masterpiece of Freudian theory and is utterly exquisite in the way it explores the human struggle to find hope in despair. As a director, Stone has been lauded and awarded for his emotionally rich adaptations of Ibsen plays. Now he tackles Bergman, another great Scandinavian writer whose drama – like Ibsen’s – grapples with human crisis in an incredibly blunt and noble way. Kerry Fox returns to STC to play the extraordinarily complex character of Jenny. ASSOCIATE SPONSOR

THE SPLINTER BY HILARY BELL

A mother and father celebrate. They thought they would never be happy again but today the best thing imaginable has happened: Eliza has returned. Abducted from her bed as they slept, Eliza has been missing for nine long months. Months during which the couple’s days were filled with grief and an ever-present absence. Now she is home and neither parent cares that the little girl’s return is as mysterious as her disappearance. That is until they begin to notice that she has changed: her face is puffy from exposure, she is taller, bigger, never throws tantrums and, most troublingly of all, refuses to speak. Unable to sleep at night, the man sits up watching his daughter. As he gazes down on her peaceful body, a splinter of doubt lodges in his mind. Is the girl lying in the bed really Eliza? If not, who is this usurper? And what have they done with Eliza? Inspired by the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw, the Hans Christian Andersen tale The Snow Queen and real life stories of abducted children, this new work by Australian playwright Hilary Bell is an emotional thriller about all consuming obsession, grief, childhood and identity. Director Sarah Goodes and Puppetry/Movement Director Alice Osborne will create a visually rich, image-based production. Firmly anchoring the show in psychological realism are Erik Thomson and Helen Thomson who play the grieving parents.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY AND ALLENS ARTHUR ROBINSON PRESENT

AUSTRALIA DAY BY JONATHAN BIGGINS

Australia Day: A day off work, an excuse to fire up the barbeque, an opportunity to drink copious amounts of beer and, most importantly, a celebration of our national identity… whatever that is. For the members of the Australia Day committee in the small country town of Coriole, the issue of cultural identity is prickly to say the least. If they could agree on what kind of Australia they are celebrating, they might be able to tackle the really big questions: Does a sausage sizzle code as monocultural? And should the special needs kids be forced to perform their dance routine on the national day? Suffice to say that with a committee comprising of an ambitious Liberal Mayor, a Greens Councillor, a bigoted builder, an Australian-born Vietnamese school teacher and a member of the CWA, rolling out the Australia Day celebrations will be as complex and controversial as carbon pricing. This wickedly funny new play from stalwart of political satire, Jonathan Biggins, was inspired by his own experiences as an Australia Day Ambassador, and will be realised by the comic genius of veteran director, Richard Cottrell.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

SEX WITH STRANGERS BY LAURA EASON

Meet Olivia. She’s your typical literary type: bookish, private and deeply disinterested in technology. With a failed novel behind her and an almost complete manuscript in front of her, this thirty-something is having a crisis of confidence. Enter Ethan Strange. He’s a Gen Y blogger who has topped the New York Times Best Seller list with his book Sex With Strangers, a conquest by conquest chronicle of his year on the singles scene. His bank account is brimming but even Ethan knows his writing is empty.

RYAN CORR

JACQUELINE MCKENZIE

DIRECTOR

WITH

JOCELYN MOORHOUSE

Despite not being a match that e-Harmony would make, when Ethan and Olivia meet they instantly click. But it’s not long before their online life threatens to destroy their real-life connection. If theatre can go viral, that is certainly what happened when this topical comedy premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2011… and you don’t need a Facebook page to understand why. The title might suggest a bawdy romp, but Sex With Strangers is an extremely tender intergenerational love story. Playwright Laura Eason pits books against blogs to ask who we are in the digital age, how much we should share online and if our addiction to technology is turning us into twits.

SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY, BLACK SWAN STATE THEATRE COMPANY AND COMMONWEALTH BANK PRESENT

SIGNS OF LIFE BY TIM WINTON

On a farm that has been parched by a drought of apocalyptic severity, Georgie, a white woman in her fifties, lives alone quietly contemplating her solitude. One evening, the silence of the expansive, isolated property is broken by the sound of a car spluttering to a stop. An Aboriginal man and woman come to the door for help and reluctantly Georgie allows them into her house. Recently widowed, Georgie is not looking for company. She wants to be alone to mull over her future but her mysterious guests, Mona and Bender, demonstrate an inexplicable reluctance to oblige her. Author Tim Winton is a household name on account of a succession of celebrated novels but has only very recently turned his attention to writing for the stage. Signs of Life is Winton’s second stage play and marks a continuation of the creative partnership he has forged with Kate Cherry, Artistic Director of Perth’s Black Swan State Theatre Company. Winton’s dramatic writing has a great deal in common with his prose, stylistically and thematically. Echoing elements of Dirt Music and Cloudstreet, Signs of Life is a work of magical realism where the dead speak with and watch over the living. Gently paced and deeply searching, this delicate new work for the stage is as evocatively atmospheric as any of the author’s novels.

“The Belgian theatre experimentalists Ontroerend Goed keep reinventing themselves… Their enthusiasm and energy are like a tonic to jaded festival-goers” The Times “When it comes to telling stories in unusual ways, Belgium’s Ontroerend Goed is ahead of the pack” Scotland on Sunday

When we first encountered the brilliant Belgian theatre makers Ontroerend Goed at Sydney Festival in 2008 we were inspired to initiate a connection with the ingenious collective. We began by presenting the adolescent anarchy that is their astounding show, Once And For All We’re Gonna Tell You Who We Are So Shut Up And Listen… before embarking on an ambitious collaborative venture with company members from both STC’s The Residents and Ontroerend Goed. In 2012, this show will finally come to fruition, premiering here at The Wharf as part of Sydney Festival before departing on a European world tour.

A History of Everything is just that. It is a history of everything from the big bang up until today. Under the direction of Ontroerend Goed Artistic Director, Alexander Devriendt, the ensemble will try to reach the vastness of the ungraspable, astronomical history of our world and universe, from their own very personal point of view. By exploring the expansive and enormous timeline that precedes us – and will succeed us – this production invites you to treasure your place in the history of everything.

When one of Britain’s most innovative new theatre companies, Filter, joined forces with David Farr, the director who brought us Metamorphosis in 2009, and Radiohead’s Live Performance Designer, Andi Watson, the result was Water; a vastly ambitious, visually arresting theatrical experience. Spanning 26 years, two generations and two continents, Water masterfully weaves parallel personal narratives into one dreamlike whole. A British government negotiator battles to unite a G8 summit on a carbon emissions deal while her neglected boyfriend turns his attention to beating the world record for cave diving. Two estranged half-brothers reunite to commemorate their dead father but quickly become embroiled in a bitter tug-of-war over his scientific legacy.

“An impressively intelligent and sensitive piece” The Independent on Sunday

Intercutting these powerful individual stories, Water explores man’s desire to push himself to the limits in an increasingly unstable world and asks whether people’s inability to connect on a personal level could have potentially catastrophic repercussions on a global scale. Filter use visual and sonic storytelling techniques to create a show of cinematic scale. Domestic scenes are interspersed with slow, majestic movement and music pieces, while video and sound are mixed live on stage to create theatre with thrillingly unique ‘live chemistry’.

“**** The Wharf Revue always arrives like a welcome tonic… a thoroughly entertaining serve of priceless satire” The Sunday Telegraph “a satiric force to be reckoned with” The Sydney Morning Herald

The talented trio behind The Wharf Revue – Jonathan Biggins, Drew Forsythe and Phillip Scott – will return in 2012 to take another comic swipe at the politics and popular culture dominating the Australian landscape. Nothing and no one will be spared – and that’s just the way we like it. Featuring a cast of familiar characters and set to a boisterous score, a night with The Wharf Revue boys is a guaranteed lark.

On 31 October 2012, we’ll be holding The Pier Group Wharf Revue Gala – a special fundraising performance of The Wharf Revue to raise funds for STC’s Patrick White Playwrights’ Award. Tickets are $75, and include a drink on arrival, an exclusive preview performance and a postperformance celebration with The Pier Group and The Wharf Revue team. “As brilliant and heretical as Matthew Bourne’s vision of Swan Lake… hits that perfect tone between silliness and sentimentality that this delightful operetta warrants. Pure joy” What’s On Stage, London

On December 10th, 1879, Arthur Sullivan wrote a letter to his mother about a new opera, upon which he was hard at work in New York. “I think that it will be a great success, for it is exquisitely funny and the music is strikingly tuneful.”

In 2010, Sasha Regan’s extraordinary all-male production of The Pirates of Penzance became a huge hit when it transferred from the tiny Union Theatre to Wilton’s Music Hall, London and was named Best Off-West End Production at The What’s On Stage Awards.

True enough, The Pirates of Penzance was an immediate hit and takes its place today as one of the most popular and enduring pieces of Gilbert & Sullivan’s work.

This irreverently funny and entirely fresh take on The Pirates of Penzance is a must-see for lovers of all things musical, comedic and high-camp!

ACCESS PERFORMANCES

Dates for all access performances are indicated on the Performance Calendar included in this package.

SEATING

HEARING ENHANCEMENT AND HEADSETS

There are seats near the front of each auditorium for visually-impaired patrons. Please indicate this requirement at Step 4 on your Booking Form.

Hearing enhancement systems are available in all theatres. The Infrared System (available at the Drama Theatre) caters for those without hearing aids by using a headset available from the theatre’s Front of House staff. The Induction Loop system (available in Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre and Drama Theatre) caters for those with newer hearing aids or hearing aids with T switches. As some seats may be ‘out of range’ we ask that you let us know your needs on your Booking Form.

AUDIO-DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES For those with visual impairments we have programmed five audio-described performances for the following productions in 2012: Pygmalion, Midsummer, Under Milk Wood, Australia Day, Signs of Life. Audio description is a live commentary, by trained describers, interspersed with the actors’ dialogue. Touch-tours before the production help to capture the atmosphere, costumes, characters and action before and during the course of a performance. Description is relayed via a discreet headset linked to the infrared audio system. When booking for an audio-described performance, please let us know the number of headsets you require. Headsets should be collected before the performance from the Box Office.

GUIDE DOGS Guide dogs can be taken into the auditorium. Please mention this on your Booking Form and you’ll be offered an aisle seat, and told about any special effects that might affect your dog’s comfort. Alternatively, guide dogs can be left in the care of Front of House staff.

50

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES In 2012, we will be offering twelve captioned performances in total, for the following productions: Pygmalion, Midsummer, Under Milk Wood, Face to Face, Australia Day, Signs of Life. Captioning allows those with hearing limitations to follow the on-stage dialogue in real time. Sydney Theatre Company uses plasma screens for this purpose. The screen is visible from selected seats in Sydney Theatre and the Drama Theatre. If you wish to be seated in this area for these productions, please indicate this on your Booking Form.

WHEELCHAIR FACILITIES AUSLAN INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES

AT THE WHARF

In 2012, we have scheduled four AUSLAN interpreted performances for the following productions: Pygmalion, Midsummer, Australia Day, Signs of Life.

Wheelchair seats are available in the Wharf 1 and Wharf 2 theatres. We now have a lift at The Wharf which gives patrons direct level access from Hickson Road to both theatres at The Wharf.

A block of seats is reserved for deaf and hearingimpaired patrons to ensure a good view of the interpreter and the stage. If you wish to be seated in this area for these productions, we ask that you let us know on your Booking Form.

AT SYDNEY THEATRE Wheelchair seats are available in Sydney Theatre. There is level access into the venue from Hickson Road.

AT DRAMA THEATRE Wheelchair seats are available in the Drama Theatre. The Sydney Opera House has a lift from the Lower Concourse to the Drama Theatre level, located in the corridor opposite the Sydney Opera House Shop. There are eleven accessible parking spaces on level 1 of the Sydney Opera House Car Park for holders of RTA disabled person parking permits. Car spaces on level 6 also have direct lift access and undercover access to the Sydney Opera House. Bookings (02) 9247 7599. If you require mobility assistance of any kind, please indicate on your Booking Form or advise the Box Office at least 24 hours in advance of attending and we will arrange appropriate assistance.

We’re here to help! Please contact the STC Box Office to discuss your particular needs so we can ensure your comfort and enjoyment. Telephone (02) 9250 1777 or email boxoffice@sydneytheatre.com.au Learn more at: sydneytheatre.com.au/access. 51

STC ED

Introduce the young people in your life to theatre Sydney Theatre Company’s education program, STC Ed, is for everyone and anyone who is interested in exploring theatre. Through STC Ed we share how theatre is created, introduce the people who make it happen and start conversations about the stories we bring to the stage. STC Ed is the most comprehensive commitment made by any state theatre company in Australia and it’s a source of great pride. Seeing a play – not just reading it – is the only way a student can really learn about it. STC is committed to providing students and teachers access to the highest quality theatre productions and professional learning. In addition to our Sydney seasons, STC Ed will be on the road again in 2012 developing our creative partnerships with new regional schools and communities throughout NSW. We’ll also be investing further in our online digital resources, giving students throughout Australia access to the rich tapestry of performance at Sydney Theatre Company.

Our highly successful School Drama program, developed in partnership with The University of Sydney, continues in 2012. Working with an STC teaching artist, Primary School teachers learn how to use drama within their lessons as a way to teach across subjects. STC’s School Drama is unique in Australia; as a company we’re pioneering how teachers can use the arts effectively in schools to help develop not only great academic outcomes but also happy, confident kids. The 2012 STC Ed program will be announced on 10 October 2011. For more information about all our activities visit sydneytheatre.com.au/stced. Our exciting work in STC Ed is achieved with the support of our generous philanthropic partners. We thank them for ensuring STC Ed continues into the future and young people will always have a chance to experience the wonder of theatre.

THE STC FOUNDATION Every year you remind us how lucky we are. Not only do ticket sales make up 65% of our overall revenue, but donations made along with your season bookings help us come closer to closing our funding gap. Every gift has played a part, as have you by taking on this extra role. Thank you.

IF

YOU HELP US PUT ON THE PLAYS THAT YOU WANT TO SEE With each new season, as the thrill of programming turns to stretching resources and balancing the budget, we are faced with the reality that the cost of making theatre is increasing. Our biggest cost is our biggest asset – people. It takes a certain number of people to put on a production, regardless of technological developments that can create efficiencies in other industries. A play with six parts cannot be performed ‘more efficiently’ by a cast of three – and that’s before we even get to what goes on behind the scenes… People make theatre electric and it’s people who create the productions that you want to see.
