Acknowledgment of Country

Sydney Fringe Festival would like to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land that we meet on, and pay respect to the 29 clans of the Eora Nation. We would also like to acknowledge that this land falls within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council. We would like to pay our respect to elders past and present, and all the Aboriginal peoples whichever Aboriginal nation they may come from.

WELCOMES Kerri Glasscock Festival Director and CEO

2017 is shaping up to be our most ambitious festival to date. We are continuing our work reactivating disused spaces for performance and have been gifted an incredible site by our Principal Partner HPG. This old business park will be transformed into a temporary festival hub and at 7000m² expect large scale activations, immersive experiences and a jam-packed program of some of the boldest and bravest local and visiting artists we could find. Some say the Sydney scene is dead, we know otherwise. Join us as we bring you an extraordinary season comprised of local creatives, performers, artists, commentators and rabble rousers. This September our city will come alive. Sydney artists are here and we welcome you into our fold, to a world of unexpected treats and surprising experiences; it’s new, it’s now and we want you to be a part of it.

Freya Smith NEPA Chair

Welcome to the 2017 Sydney Fringe. It is with great pleasure that I recently accepted the position of Chair for the Newtown Entertainment Precinct Association, the governing board of the Sydney Fringe Festival. This year the Sydney Fringe has taken flight, expanding beyond the inner city to Western Sydney, and continued its vital work with Local Governments to create new performance spaces for local artists. We hope you enjoy the standout program on offer this year and I look forward to seeing many of you in theatres and pop-up Fringe venues throughout September.

Clover Moore Lord Mayor of Sydney

On behalf of the City of Sydney, I’m pleased to welcome you to the 2017 Sydney Fringe Festival. Once again The Fringe will delight, challenge and entertain with a fantastic program of dance, music, art and theatre throughout September. The Fringe’s significance extends beyond a single month. By providing a platform for new and established artists to experiment, test new work and realise their visions and find new audiences, the Fringe contributes to the continued vitality and sustainability of Sydney’s creative and cultural life. This year the Fringe will establish a new temporary creative hub with performance and exhibition spaces in a building in Alexandria. This builds on previous work, supported by the City to activate empty spaces for creative purposes. I look forward to the insights this exciting project will provide to support the City’s commitment to make it easier to establish creative spaces. I also urge you to consider supporting The Fringe’s International Programming Fund. This Fund will enable the best of the Sydney Fringe to tour to other international fringe festivals and Sydney audiences to enjoy reciprocal visits from other fringe festivals. I wish Sydney Fringe Festival all the best with this year’s event.

Rik Hart

Inner West Council General Manager Inner West Council is home to NSW's largest population of arts and cultural workers – and that’s why we are passionate and proud of our independent arts scene, and a long term supporter of Sydney Fringe. Over eight years, the Fringe has grown to be a fixture on the arts calendar – and for good reason. Thousands of people have been entertained, provoked and stimulated by a program that is innovative, uniquely inner west, and distinctively Sydney. Now, we also are delighted to be the 2017 Major Partner Artist Development, as part of our ongoing partnership with Sydney Fringe. Together we will continue to nurture and grow a flourishing and prosperous local arts and creative community and economy. I encourage you take time to enjoy all the wonderful shows and events on offer. Have a wonderful 2017 Sydney Fringe Festival! 3

AMBASSADORS Each year we ask a group of artists to champion our cause and spread the word of fringe far and wide. We reach out to artists who inspire us, have influenced our way of thinking, have their own way of doing things and unique voices that rise above.

Betty Grumble

“The meeting of audience and maker is a sacred ancient thing. It is in these spaces of invention and imagination that we remind ourselves of where our heart lies and what might be possible for our world. Storytelling (in all its mediums) is vital to a healthy community and to exercise our connective tissues. Creativity can have a muscular defiance that reaches and teaches in endless potential. The voice of the independent arts should and can reflect the song, shriek, whisper, cackle, chatter towards independence itself. The arts is an ecosystem for our beautiful differences and the artists the pollinators of the crafts.” See p. 60 for Betty's show info

Candy Royalle

“As an artist, it is irresponsible to play silent witness to the atrocities being committed both here in Australia and across the globe, to the most vulnerable and marginalised people on earth. It is easy to feel overwhelmed, afraid, disempowered. However, we artists are uniquely positioned to provide access to other voices, in other ways – the hidden stories. We have the power to bypass peoples prejudices and fears and create work that is visceral, that rehumanises the dehumanised, that propels people out of their apathy, into action. In fact, we artists are privileged and so are obligated to speak out, to speak up, to push our audiences, to challenge a “post-truth” media. Producers and curators within the arts must consciously create platforms for those regularly denied spaces for their voices. A fringe festival must celebrate those who are too often pushed out into the furthermost fringes: we the queers, we the people of colour, we who identify as women, we who have had to fight to be heard above the din of the same white noise playing on repeat. Now is the time for our stories to ring out across stages, in warehouses, on streets. All of this, all of it, has the propensity to fuel real, tangible change. I am proud to be a part of that change, unashamed to step forward as leader, unafraid to say – we can not play silent witness, for this makes us complicit. Instead, we must create the sort of dangerous, satirical, uncomfortable work that fringe festivals are made for – this is the only way we can change the world.”

Tim Freedman

“The next time someone drags me into a conversation about what Netflix series they are addicted to I am going to scream. Sometimes I drive through the sleepy midweek streets of Sydney at night and I can feel the thick torpor of the Golden Age of Television wafting down from the balconies and leaking through the curtained windows, making me slightly nauseous. Welcome to the Sydney Fringe, where the artists answer only to themselves and where eccentricity is not hammered down by the sheer heft of the mass media. Where we can forget for a while that over the last decade the edges of the inner city have been scraped smooth, and where for a few weeks we can celebrate that the ecology of our culture is healthier because again the exotic creatures at the bottom of the forest can breathe and fuss around and have a little fun.” See p. 77 for Tim's show info

Ben Quilty

“I am an artist and it’s really important that some of us are doing it, against all the odds, against absolutely zero support from the broader society… I do have things that I want to say. And I don’t really take the backward step of feeling guilty about that.” (Quote from Ben Quilty, The Accidental Artist by Tracey Clement) Ben Quilty emerged as a household name in 2011 after an Archibald Prize winning portrait of Margaret Olley and a remarkable series. And if you go by the works alone then It’s no surprise that he has received such acclaim; the paint is thick, the strokes are bold, and the portraits are layered with more than colour. However, more than an artist, he is an activist as he increasingly uses his platform to promote the interests of the marginalised and campaign for more humane treatment of Asylum seekers.

Benjamin Law

“When you think about it, engaging with the arts is central to being Australian. Our most famous built structure houses the arts. It’s as important as sport: more Australians go to galleries than AFL matches in a single year. Half of all international visitors engage in Australia's cultural activities. The arts are central to who we are. And some of my happiest experiences as an audience member has been watching shows made on the fringes: passion projects fuelled by late-night hours and early-morning starts, made on shoestring budgets with the core conviction that something’s worth sharing.”

BROADWAY SYDNEY POP-UP FRINGE SHAUN MCGRATH WIG EXHIBITION Hairdresser and wig artist extraordinaire Shaun McGrath is the man behind our incredible imagery this year. Globally recognised for his work in wiggery, creating unique wigs, head-dresses and hair for catwalks, fashion editorials and the arts, he was an AIPP Awards Best Avant-Garde Hairdressing Finalist in 2016. Shaun McGrath has always erred on the side of quirkiness and creative expression with his work in hairdressing. He blurs the line between hairdressing, installation and sculptural art. Working from his base in salon styling, Shaun has modified his hairdressing skills to create a very unique niche for himself with a blend of couture wiggery, visual merchandising and art.

INSA ANIMATED STREET ART RETROSPECTIVE WORLD PREMIERE 1-30 September World Square Sydney Fringe Festival is proud to announce a world first interactive art exhibition. World renowned GIF-ITI artist INSA will exhibit a collection of his groundbreaking works in the main courtyard of World Square in the city centre. His innovative GIF-ITI concept takes art pieces painted on street walls and converts them into animated GIFs. He creates the works from murals painted on walls, photographed, re-painted and then re-photographed before being converted into the digital format. Visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to download the GIF-ITI app to interact with the artworks, with the works coming to life when patrons hover their phone screens in front of the suspended artworks. Over the last couple of years, renowned graffiti writer turned artist INSA has taken his practice to the next level. Using concepts as ambitious as filming from space and globe-hopping to produce looping-animated artwork he has proved himself truly unique

32

in vision and accomplishment. In the process he has amassed tens of millions of views online for his stunning video projects. Originally famous for his ubiquitous Graffiti Fetish artwork that focused on issues of modern aspirations, his visual motifs confront the fetishisation of products in modern society and the commodification of success and ambition. And now known for his mind-bending GIF-ITI work which is underpinned by the theme of online versus offline life, the artist continues his interest in confounding concepts of time and space, the ways in which we process and consume, and the transience of both art and object. Download the GIF-ITI Viewer app and hover over the skull on the next page to see INSA's incredible GIF painting come to life.

GAZE

Straight from Taiwan, Tiptoe Dance Art started from street dance and has crossed into contemporary dance and physical theatre. GAZE means the very moment when two people stare at each other. At this moment, their physical world disappears and the one lasting thing is the feeling for each other and the touching of each other’s mind.
