We’re preparing for an electric future Sydney City Toyota has just commissioned three electric fast charging stations for our dealerships at Waterloo and Glebe.

It’s our first ’small step’ to join in what Toyota is describing as a once-in-a-century ‘giant leap’ in the way automobiles are made.

Toyota has been the leader in petrol-electric technology, and it has delivered more than 16 million hybrids world-wide, as of two months ago 200,000 of them here in Australia.

Now it’s moving to examine electric only vehicles.

The new BZ4x electric concept SUV revealed only weeks ago is just one of seven BZ concepts now under evaluation for launch by 2025.

BZ stands for Below Zero and it’s an expression of Toyota’s commitment to producing cars which are operationally carbon negative.

Australia setting up its own hydrogen filling station and a Hydrogen Education Centre at its Centre of Excellence.

Our guests in 2020 ordered 28 percent of their new Toyotas as hybrids. By May this year the ratio had grown to 38 percent – a huge leap.

Countdown to the long-awaited Olympics It’s been a long while coming but on 23 July, the postponed Games of the XXXII Olympiad will open in Tokyo, and at Sydney City Toyota we’re incredibly proud of our company’s involvement.

Toyota has been a huge supporter since the Games were secured by Japan in 2013.

Support has been given to athletes in the Olympics and Paralympics, globally and in Australia. Toyota has pledged the Games will generate the least CO₂ ever in Olympic history.

A massive amount of effort has gone into producing vehicles and concepts that will practically assist the games to occur - and will help shape the future of mobility.

A whole range of vehicles and robots will do everything from uplift athletes on self-guided autonomous pathways to providing individual Battery Electric Vehicles for walking areas. A remarkable range of robots will perform tasks to reduce stress on human beings in a pandemic -sensitive environment.

Our new Kluger defines the family SUV This month Sydney City Toyota took delivery of its first shipment of the new fourth generation Kluger SUV, featuring for the first time a petrol-electric hybrid version.

The new Kluger has been welcomed by motoring media as our latest step in electrifying our entire range, reducing CO₂ emissions and returning our guests a huge saving in fuel costs.

Toyota Australia estimates that the new hybrid Kluger driven 15,000 kms a year, will save its owner more than $600 in fuel costs compared to an equivalent petrol model.

And the same hybrid Kluger will emit 2.4 tonnes less CO₂ into the atmosphere than the original Kluger did when it was launched 18 years ago.

We’ve come a long way. Australians have bought 190,000 Klugers since we first launched it. The new series is the best yet, chock full of Toyota Safety Sense breakthroughs including connectivity which gives families the security of knowing they’re always able to call for assistance in any circumstances.

Toyota describes the Kluger’s styling as powerful and suave, and we agree – the soft touch, beautifully stitched interior, is every bit that of a luxury car. And yet the various seat fold down configurations in this genuine seven seat SUV means that guests have up-to a massive 1,909 litres of cargo capacity.

Kluger now joins RAV4, C-HR and Yaris Cross in Toyota’s hybrid SUV line-up.

Winterising for the best snow season yet In Australia’s relatively mild winter few people ‘winterize’ their Toyota the way they do in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Bread and Butter Project has been able to provide refugees with the skills to start a new life here in Australia, as a baker.

Here are 11 of the new graduates from the program.

Baked with pride Allan Dabbagh, our Group General Manager, was bursting with pride when he attended the graduation ceremony of Jean Robert at the Bread-and-Butter project.

Sydney City Toyota is a major sponsor of the not-for-profit organization which helps refugees to our country find meaningful careers in the hospitality industry – especially in the bakeries which have become so much a part of our life.

Jean is a refugee from the Congo and he’s the first of his nation to enter, and pass through the Bread-and-Butter course. He’s now fully qualified as a Cert 11 in food processing – essentially a baker.

“Bread and Butter has now had 55 graduates successfully pass through their course and all have been placed in jobs in Sydney,” Allan said.

“Another eight started this month with a view to graduating early next year.”

John is a regular panelist on a segment called ‘All Things Automotive,’ hosted by Chris Smith on Sunday mornings.
