Ask the ref
Last year, we offered sponsorship to the South Sydney Junior Leagues club on a three year deal to help their development manager, Luke Curry expands the junior girls’ division.
It’s with great pride that we can report that in the second year of our involvement, Junior Girls has become the growth area of Souths.
According to Luke, more than 3100 kids up to the age of 16 now compete in winter footy, and better than 20 per cent of them are girls.
“It’s been a phenomenal growth path,” Luke said. “We’ve had girls playing matches not only on weekends but right through the winter school holidays against teams from as far afield as Newcastle.”
Luke and his squad take their responsibility very seriously, and the girls are encouraged to gather their skills safely and to always put sportsmanlike behaviour above anything else.
“It’s become a real community affair,” Luke said. When Souths asked for sponsorship for their parallel refereeing program, we were happy to oblige. Youngsters from 13 upwards can become referees under a strict development program.
But it seemed a little odd to have refs in Sydney City Toyota jerseys blowing the whistle on players sponsored by the same company.
That’s why when you go to a Souths juniors match, you’ll see the refs in the exclusive pink of Sydney City Lexus, our sister company.
And we look forward to seeing everyone at the Grand Final at Redfern Oval on 30-31 August.
