A few months ago, I had the privilege of attending the 10-year anniversary celebration of the New Hope Adventist Church. It was a truly inspiring event, bringing together members and guests to reflect on God’s faithfulness over the past decade.

The service featured a powerful sermon by Pastor Terry Johnson, and throughout the day we heard moving testimonies of how God has been working in people’s lives.

Pastor Lloyd and Pastor Fred were also there, rejoicing in God’s blessing.

One testimony in particular stood out to me. A church member, someone I often greet at work but never really fully knew his whole story, shared his journey. He and his wife met on the second day of his visit to New Hope during its early church-planting days. He was keen to remember the bliss of that experience. Over time, their relationship grew into love, marriage, and the beautiful family they now have. As he stood on stage with his wife and children, he expressed his gratitude for the way New Hope has shaped their lives.

The commitment to join the church plant had blessed his life in more than one way. The church reacted

in a standing ovation. Not because they were the stars, but because of what the Lord had done.

Moments like these remind us of the power of a church community committed to evangelism and discipleship. When members dedicate themselves to reaching others for Christ, incredible things happen in the church and in our lives.

As someone who has witnessed New Hope’s journey from a church plant to a fully organised church, I rejoiced in seeing its growth. But more importantly, I was more joyful of a deeper truth: When we engage in Gods mission, we are the ones who are transformed. Our spiritual lives are revived, our relationships are enriched, and our faith is strengthened.

If you are seeking revival in your life, I encourage you to join a community dedicated to God’s work. Let us not just “do church”.

Let us be part of a mission-driven, disciple-making church, and all of us will experience Gods blessings in ways we have never imagined.

has shifted dramatically in recent years. More and more customers are turning to online options, and as a result, instore visits have declined. At the same time, operating costs have increased, making it difficult to sustain a physical store in the same way as before.

Over the past three years, ABC Minchinbury has faced significant financial challenges, with losses each year exceeding $300,000. That means for every dollar of sales, the conference is spending nearly 44 cents per $1 of sales income to prop up losses. This simply isn’t sustainable. So, to be the best possible stewards of resources and continue supporting literature evangelism, ABC leaders have had to take a fresh look at how the store operates.

All Pathfinder and Adventurer orders are to be placed online. Pick, pack, and dispatch will be provided by Signs or the Australian Union Conference. Your friendly ABC staff will still be available in-store at the Wahroonga store or via phone or email to provide customer support for online orders.

Despite these changes, ABC’s mission remains unchanged. The store will continue to have a presence at departmental and conference-wide events, ensuring that customers can still engage with ABC in meaningful ways. The ABC Store Wahroonga located at the Sydney Adventist Hospital on Level 4 will remain open 5 days per week from 9:30am-5:30pm, Monday-Thursday and 10am-2pm, Friday.

Change can be challenging, but these adjustments will allow the ABC to keep serving communities in a sustainable and effective way.

SYDNEY PORTUGUESE CHURCH PROMOTES HEALTH AT BAIRRO FESTIVAL

On Saturday, 22 March, the Sydney Portugues Adventist Church took part in the Inner West Portuguese Bairro Festival, with a health stall offering free health checks to the community.

As part of their outreach to all Portuguesespeaking people, the church provided blood pressure and glucose checks, BMI assessments, and general wellbeing advice. Friendly volunteers were on hand to support attendees and promote healthier living.

Visitors also had the opportunity to sign up

for the Live More Project, a lifestyle and wellbeing program developed by Dr Darren Morton, an Australian expert in lifestyle medicine. The program focuses on improving mental health, reducing stress, boosting energy, and building healthier habits through simple, practical steps. It is designed to help people live more fully—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

FOUR NEW MEMBERS JOIN FAIRFIELD CHURCH

On 29 March 1925, Pastor Albert Henry Piper, President of the New South Wales Conference, officiated the dedication service of the Fairfield Seventh-day Adventist Church.

A century later, on 29 March 2025, the Fairfield Church celebrated its 100th dedication anniversary, reflecting on the commitment and hard work of the volunteers who helped build it. On this occasion, Pastor Edison Akrawi baptised Gayleen Nuku and welcomed new members Eric Papalii, Jardelliah Papalii, and Nadia Djordjevic through profession of faith.

“They were ready for baptism and profession of faith,” Pr Akrawi shares. “It was just a matter pf picking the right date, and there was no better time than the centennial dedication of the church!”

Gayleen had been attending the church

for nearly a year when she asked to be baptised.

Pr Akrawi started Bible studies with her, and his wife and elders joined in. The Papalli siblings were baptised members of another Adventist church, and their professions of faith make them full members of the Fairfield congregation. Nadia was baptised years ago in a different country, but her baptism details had been lost. After attending the Fairfield Church for several months, she asked to become a member.

Like other churches, the Fairfield Church membership has ups and downs, Pr Akrawi says.

“We thank the Lord that the church attracted new members in the recent years, and hopefully this will help us to grow again.”

All four of the newest members have now found a welcoming church home. “The church is excited about the additions to our membership,” says Pr Akrawi.

YOUTH MINISTRIES GREATER SYDNEY

SYDNEY YOUTH ON THE MOVE: BRINGING HOPE TO OUR COMMUNITY On 15 March 2025, young people across Sydney stepped out of their churches and into their communities, proving that the church isn’t just a building— it’s a movement. With hearts full of love and hands ready to serve, they embraced Global Youth Day, turning faith into action. Some churches closed their doors for the morning—not to pause worship, but to become worship—meeting people where they were, and bringing hope, kindness, and practical help to the streets of Sydney.

Throughout the day, service took many forms.

Teams provided food and clothing to the homeless, ensuring those in need felt seen and cared for.

Mobile health screenings offered essential care and support, while other teams visited senior homes, bringing worship and companionship to brighten the day of residents. In the city, youth shared smoothies as a way to spark conversations, and groups took to the streets to clean up communities—because when youth lead, change happens.

This incredible impact was made even greater by the team effort of the Greater Sydney Conference directors, who worked together to empower and support the youth in their mission of service.

Our young people’s presence didn’t go unnoticed. Police officers stopped by to ask who we were, and after hearing about our mission, one 10

officer shared, “We are here to help, you are here to help, God is here to help, and we hope they will also help themselves.”

A local bakery also observed what we were doing, and after seeing the good work, they donated an incredible amount of bread and baked goods, ensuring that no one went hungry that day.

The kindness of the community, combined with the service of Adventist youth, created a ripple effect of generosity and care.

Global Youth Day was a powerful reminder that the church isn’t about how many people sit in the pews but how many are sent out to serve. God blesses a church that moves.

This can’t just be a once-a-year project—this must be a lifestyle.

If you missed this year, don’t worry—we’re doing it again on 21 March, 2026! Our vision is for this event to grow beyond youth and become a full, conference-wide outreach movement—where youth, Pathfinders, community ministries, ADRA, and entire churches come together to make an even bigger impact.

Thank you to every single person who joined hands to serve this year. The church is at its best when it serves. Let’s keep it going!

LITTLE PEOPLE ARE THE FOCUS: ADVENTURER BIG DAY 2025

Adventurer Big Day is a special celebration dedicated to little people with big hearts—and to the incredible Adventurer staff, mums, dads, uncles, aunties, guardians, and grandparents who work so hard to support one of the most important ministries in the Adventist Church.

Every two years, we’re blessed to gather all our Adventurer clubs for a day of unity, worship, learning, and fun as part of our Greater Sydney family. On the 6th of April 2025, around 30 clubs came together at Mountain View Adventist College for an unforgettable day. The event began with the Adventurer Parade and the presentation of flags, followed by a beautiful worship led by Pastor Alexis.

A special new feature that added excitement to the program was the introduction of a drum corps, composed of our amazing Pathfinders, which led the parade and brought a vibrant rhythm to the day—an inspiring

collaboration across ministries within our church.

Throughout the event, children enjoyed fun activities and engaging storytelling. Families and guests also had the chance to grab a bite from the many Adventurer Club food stalls. These featured a variety of mouthwatering cuisines—from African dishes to tasty islander treats, crispy fried potatoes, and much more—all prepared with love. These stalls weren’t just about food—they were also fundraising to support local clubs, with every dollar going back into ministry for our children.

There is no better investment than in the hearts and futures of our children. So here’s a heartfelt invitation: let’s rally together—parents, leaders, friends, and church families—to support this vibrant ministry. Give your time. Cover them in prayer.

Share your skills, your presence, and yes, even your resources.

If your church has two or three little ones, that’s all it takes to begin something life changing. Start a club. Build a legacy. Let’s shape a generation that knows Jesus deeply, serves joyfully, and walks boldly into their God-given purpose.

Because the love, faith, and values we pour into their lives today will echo into eternity.

And in this journey—you are never alone. We’re here to help, to encourage, and to walk alongside you. So please, reach out. Let’s build this future together.

HEALTHY EATS HIT THE STREETS: INSIDE THE TRENDY NEW FOOD TRUCK EVERYONE’S BUZZING ABOUT

Przybylko (Health Strategy Leader, South Pacific Division and executive director, ELIA Wellness), in partnership with ADRA. Due to the growth of ELIA Wellness and the increasing number of Wellness Hubs being established across Greater Sydney, having a portable ministry on wheels was seen as an invaluable investment. This truck will hopefully provide a great opportunity for all ELIA Wellness Hubs (wellnesspromoting churches and schools) to connect with the community by selling smoothies and healthy food.

“The ‘Wellness Hub food truck’ is a new way to have a mobile wellness presence across Sydney, delivered by friendly Adventist volunteers. Sydney, look out!” said Dr Leimena-Lehn.

The team also recognise the support of Pastor Darren Slade for helping in the search for the food truck, the enormous effort of Wahroonga church member Doedie Fatt and the Geelong church team, with Pastor Jeremy Taituave and Michelle van Egmond, who have operated a food truck for some time.

“We are so grateful to God for opening up the doors to make the GSC/ELIA Wellness

Hub Food Truck possible in such a short period of time and have so many volunteers willing to help out,” said Dr Przybylko. “Our vision is to see ELIA Wellness Food Trucks in every conference in Australia and New Zealand to engage with the community and promote whole-person health.”

Jade Rasmussen, a food truck volunteer at the San Carols, reflected: “I was so excited when I heard that the GSC Health Department were going to be running a Food Truck! It’s an engaging and effective way to promote the health message to the community. I thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the Carols and had so much fun serving alongside my fellow volunteers.”

Food to Flourish, the new food truck purchased by the Greater Sydney Conference health department, has had its first opportunity to serve the community at the San Carols on Sunday, December 8th. It has since appeared at a few events, including our Big Camp.

The new “Wellness Hub Food Truck” belongs to the Health Department at the Greater Sydney Conference. The Health Department purchased the food truck two weeks prior to the event with the idea of using the truck to help them run various wellness initiatives around Greater Sydney.

The health truck initiative was led by Dr Christiana Leimena-Lehn (Health director, Greater Sydney Conference) and Dr Geraldine

A CALL FOR SUPPORT AND PRAYER

ADRA is grateful for the opportunity to serve the Macquarie Fields community and be a light in the South of Sydney. As the centre continues this work, the staff encourage the Greater Sydney Conference family and the wider community to pray for the centre and those who find resource and refuge here. ADRA SHINES A LIGHT IN MACQUARIE FIELDS The Macquarie Fields Community Centre is proud to offer a variety of programs designed to support, uplift, and empower individuals in the community.

From empowering women and art classes to Café Connect, health and wellness seminars, and exploring Jesus, the centre is a place of hope, connection, and transformation for many. These programs are about more than simply providing services; they’re about serving with compassion and love, helping people find strength, and teaching them that they may live as God intended.

One of the standout initiatives is the Empowering Women’s Connection program, which has witnessed remarkable stories of personal growth. A woman who had been struggling with anxiety and a lack of direction has found new hope through the workshops.

She now shares her journey with us, expressing how creating new daily habits has helped her feel less anxious and more optimistic. Her story is a testimony of personal growth and an inspiration to others in the group. The impact these workshops have had on her self-worth and self-esteem has been profound, and she continues to attend, eager to support and learn alongside her peers.

Another participant found the courage to reconnect with her estranged family, a relationship that had been broken for years. Thanks to the Empowering Women’s Connection program, she took 14

steps toward healing and reconciliation. This lifechanging decision brought her peace, relieving her of the burden of unresolved conflict. She also reached out to ADRA to do her Work Development Order (WDO) after receiving a driving fine she couldn’t afford to pay. In choosing to participate in this workshop, she found practical help and emotional and spiritual support.

A PLACE OF BELONGING AND SUPPORT

Many who join the centre’s programs find resources and a community. The sense of belonging and purpose that emerges from these groups helps combat loneliness, fostering a sense of acceptance and connection. These are the pillars that hold up the centre: ensuring that everyone feels valued, supported, and a part of something bigger than themselves.

EXPLORING JESUS

The Exploring Jesus program has also seen incredible growth. As the group gathers to discuss life’s struggles and how faith can help us navigate them, the sense of community has been deeply encouraging. This program is about learning and engaging in meaningful conversations that challenge participants to grow in faith and understanding of life's challenges.

BUILDING A NETWORK OF SUPPORT, LEADERSHIP AND FAITH When it’ s done right, women’s ministry is about creating spaces where women uplift one another, grow in faith, and step into leadership.

The recent United Night 2025 event and Sydney Adventist Women Regional Meetings illustrate the power of connection, showing that women can flourish when they come together in Christ.

A NIGHT OF WORSHIP, TESTIMONY, AND EMPOWERMENT

On Saturday, 1 February, over 400 women gathered at Macarthur Adventist College for the inaugural United Night 2025, a powerful time of of worship, testimony, and connection. Dressed in white in support of the White Ribbon initiative, participants stood in solidarity, saying “no” to domestic violence against women, children, and men.

The packed hall buzzed with anticipation and faith as women from across North, South, Central, and West Sydney came together to connect with God, uplift one another, and be inspired. The theme, Empowered to Flourish, drawn from Psalms 92:1213, reminded every woman that God calls them to

grow and thrive in His purpose.

The evening featured spirit-filled praise and worship led by the Sydney Cook Island Women’s Ministry and a heartfelt song from the Wetherill Park Spanish Sisters, creating a sacred atmosphere of reflection and gratitude.

A powerful moment came when Sabina Ortiz from 3AM Ryde shared her testimony.

Once a devout Catholic, Sabina recounted her life-changing encounter with Jesus following a major car accident. It was through Pastor Joshua Gonzalez and the loving support of her new church family that she discovered the truth of Christ and made the decision to become an Adventist.

Her testimony was a reminder that God’s grace is always at work, drawing hearts to Him in unexpected ways.

Mrs. Pou Leuluai delivered an inspirational and heartfelt message, urging women to embrace their divine calling and step into the empowerment God gives. She reminded the audience that just as trees flourish when planted in rich soil, so too will God’s daughters flourish when rooted in Him. Pastor Alban Matohiti, Greater Sydney Conference

President, reinforced this message, calling women to rise as disciples and shine Christ’s light into their communities.

The evening also included a special time of intercessory prayer. The Prayer Support Team lifted up pastors and their wives, education staff, Women’s Ministry leaders, and all in attendance, covering them in blessings and strength for the year ahead. Afterward, Women’s Ministry Director Meleofa Tovo and the advisory team hosted a grazing feast, fostering deeper connections in faith and sisterhood.

“I give all glory to God for the amazing blessings in Sydney Adventist Women,” said Meleofa. “God will do incredible things in the Greater Sydney Conference, and every woman here is empowered to flourish in her calling. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for our women’s ministry!”

STRENGTHENING CONNECTIONS THROUGH REGIONAL GATHERINGS

While United Night 2025 brought women together for a citywide gathering, the Sydney Adventist Women Regional Meetings extend that mission throughout the year. Rather than waiting for women to come to them, the Sydney Adventist Women Advisory Team took a bold step, organizing regional events to bring spiritual gatherings closer to the ladies of North, South, Central, and West Sydney.

The North Region set the momentum with the first meeting on 22 February at the South Pacific Division (SPD), led by Marilyn Todd and Minnie Lebmeier.

Over 30 women’s ministry leaders and team members gathered to learn, share, and grow in their calling.

On March 8, the South Region followed with a powerful event at Hoxton Park Adventist Church, aligning with International Women’s Day. Led by Elizabeth Harvey and Valrie Vakalalakoro, women sang praises, studied the Word, and gained insights on how to run successful events—equipping them for greater impact in their churches and communities.

The Central

Region’s gathering at Auburn Adventist Church exceeded expectations, with women traveling from the Auburn, Bankstown, Parramatta, Granville Fijian, Enmore Fijian, Hurstville, and Sydney Indonesian churches to fill the sanctuary with faith and fellowship. Led by Evelyn and Meleofa, the event was a testimony of how God is working through the women of the Greater Sydney Conference.

The West Region is preparing for its upcoming gathering at Mt Druitt Adventist Church. Leaders Eranita Lamplough and Mati Demsey anticipate a large and spirit-filled turnout, as women from across the region come together to connect, learn, and be inspired.

UNITED IN FAITH, FLOURISHING IN MINISTRY

United Night 2025 and the Sydney Adventist Women Regional Meetings are reminders that women’s ministry is strongest when women stand together to uplift one another in faith.

Whether in a large citywide gathering or a small regional meeting, the mission remains the same: to equip, encourage, and empower women to flourish in their calling. As Jesus reminds us in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Indeed, God is present in every meeting, in every conversation, and in every heart that seeks Him. May we continue to gather, grow, and flourish in His love!

On Friday evening, Ebony and Mackenzie made a public declaration of their faith through baptism at Kellyville Church. Surrounded by family, friends, and members of their school and church communities, the ceremony was a heartfelt celebration. Pastor Roger Govender, Ebony’s grandfather, led the baptism, adding a personal element to the occasion. It was a joyful event that marked a significant spiritual milestone for both young women.

Macarthur Adventist College is proud to announce that Mission Smith, our Year 12 student and School Captain, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Leadership Award.

This honour recognises Mission’s exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication, and the positive influence she continues to have on our school community. As School Captain, Mission has consistently led with integrity, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility—qualities that have now been formally recognised at a regional level.

In a special service held during the final two periods of the last day of term, Year 9 students Leo and Mikaila, along with Year 11 student Zach, were baptised in front of their friends, family, and the wider school community. It was a moment of joy, worship, and deep significance as we witnessed these young people take this important step of faith.

Students and staff gathered to show their love and support, and it was heartwarming to see the families join us for this special occasion. The commitment made by Leo, Mikaila, and Zach was a powerful reminder of the transforming love of Jesus and the beautiful work God is doing our students’ lives.

It’s been a busy term, full of learning, growth, and challenges—but what a way to end it! As the holidays begin, we do so with full hearts, rejoicing in this public declaration of faith and the reminder that God is moving in our school.

It has been a busy and fulfilling Term 2, and I’m continually grateful for our dedicated teaching team who make so much possible.

Our amazing students put on an incredible performance in their school musical on 5 June. It was such a joy to watch our talented young people take the stage with confidence and creativity. Their energy and commitment made for a truly inspiring evening.

Even now, I find myself humming some of the songs— they clearly left an impression!

This term, students enjoyed a range of engaging experiences, including our STEAM Day, where they collaborated, problem-solved and created with enthusiasm, and our annual Public Speaking Competition, a fantastic showcase of confidence and communication.

Our Advanced Learning Showcase was another highlight, with students diving into projects around food science and bridge building. It was a great opportunity for them to share their thinking, creativity and achievements, and for parents to see the excitement their children have for learning and the pride they take in their work.

IT STARTS WITH US: WHY WE NEED TO SPEAK UP ABOUT VIOLENCE Violence doesn’t always look like what we see in movies or crime shows. It doesn’t only happen in alleyways or bad neighbourhoods. Sometimes it happens in homes, in schools, or even at church.

And sometimes it happens to people we know and love.

That’s what the enditnow® movement is about. It’s a global push—started by the Seventhday Adventist Church—to say enough is enough.

Abuse in any form? Not okay. Silence? Not an option. We’re done pretending it’s not our problem.

If something’s wrong, we talk about it. If someone needs help, we show up.

WHAT ACTUALLY COUNTS AS VIOLENCE?

When you hear the word violence, your first thought might be physical harm. But violence can be more subtle than that—and just as damaging.

Emotional abuse, manipulation, isolation, constant control, even threats—these all count. Some wounds are visible; others are hidden, but just as real.

In Australia, the numbers are hard to ignore: • • • • •

1 in 6 women has experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner.

On average, one woman is killed every nine days by someone she used to trust.

Kids often witness abuse—or are caught in the middle of it.

People with disability and Indigenous Australians face even higher risks.

Silence won’t make it stop.

Many living with abuse feel alone. They’re

RESUSCITATION DAY—BEYOND A MIRACLE

Each year, November 12 is marked in Peter Wolnizer’s diary as Resuscitation Day. Eleven years ago, while sitting in the waiting room between tests at Sydney Adventist Hospital (the San), Peter suffered a near-fatal cardiac arrest.

“The resuscitation team worked on me for 25 minutes, trying to stabilise me enough to transfer me to the cardiac catheter laboratory,” says Peter. “In the end, Gavin Rapmund, the manager of Emergency Care, had to climb onto the patient trolley with me to continue giving me CPR as they transferred me up to cath lab where Dr Jason Sharp inserted a stent.”

Peter had suffered a blockage of the largest artery in his heart—often nicknamed the widowmaker—responsible for carrying 50 percent of the heart’s blood supply. He spent eight days in the coronary care unit.

“While I was recovering, the doctor who had overseen the resuscitation team, Dr Justin Bowra, came to visit me. He said ‘Peter, if this had happened outside the hospital, there’s absolutely no doubt you wouldn’t have survived.

And even though we were right there, it was still beyond a miracle that you were able to be resuscitated.’ I am eternally grateful,” reflects Peter.

At the time, Peter had been travelling almost non-stop for three years as part of his job. He had just returned from New York, where he’d been chairing the global standards-setting board for the accounting profession. It was a blessing the cardiac arrest didn’t happen while travelling.

Fast forward 11 years, Peter recently joined a behind-the-scenes tour of the San, run by the San Foundation—the philanthropic arm of the hospital. As part of the tour, the group visited Emergency Care. where Gavin, the unit manager, spoke to them about resuscitation equipment.

When the tour group was leaving, Peter mentioned he had been a grateful beneficiary of the expert resuscitation team 11 years prior.

As Peter talked further, Gavin realised he’d been part of the team that had resuscitated Peter.

What a poignant meeting!

“I’m very blessed,” says Peter. “I’m doing well. I attended cardiac rehabilitation at the San’s rehab gym after discharge from hospital, and I still remain very active. I have a personal trainer, go to the gym regularly and walk 5kms most days. I’m about to do the 10km event at the Ballarat marathon.”

As Peter reflects on the cardiac arrest and 24

his recovery, he says he didn’t experience the anxiety and depression that can often follow a traumatic event like that. “I experienced a ‘peace that passes understanding’ about the whole thing, and that’s a miracle in itself. I attribute this to my strong Christian faith. I am not a Seventhday Adventist, but I think the San’s mission statement is a living statement; the mission is truly lived out across the hospital. I am grateful and count my blessings every day.”

said. “We’d been there for 59 years and the local people didn’t know who we were and what we did.” Ms Mison suggested a face and a presence in the community, and the idea for The Give Hope Today Op Shop came to life.

It’s important to Asian Aid to continue helping overseas, but also to give back locally.

They’ve partnered with the ADRA SouperVan and are also sponsoring a local student to attend university. Overseas, they support children’s education in India, Bangladesh and Nepal, as

well as health checks, food, school equipment and resources. Most recently, they’ve partnered with a new project in Cambodia called Night Care, funding childcare centres for children who have a mother working in the red-light districts.

This program allows children to have a safe place to sleep, where they are fed, bathed and cared for.

“All the money goes directly back to children,” said Ms Mison.

Big Camp RECAP

elcome to Greater Sydney Big Camp 2025 issue! Nearly 800 Sydney Adventists joined us at the Adventist Alpine Village in Jindabyne for this week of fellowship and we had a great time.

I’m sure most of you by now have heard the theme of this year’s camp: “Empowered to go”. It’s based on the commission in Acts 1:8, which says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (NLT).

Big Camp is reframing this verse: “You will be my witnesses in Sydney, in all Australia and to the ends of the earth.” The speakers this week are going to be unpacking just what this means.

Camp kicked off on the evening on Monday April 21st with a program for everyone. Pastor Alban Matohiti, Greater Sydney Conference president, spoke on the story of the calling of Abram in Genesis 12:1-3. He highlighted what it means to be called and what this means in the context of our own journeys. “Everyone is a part of God’s calling,” he said. “it’s not about those who are called in a significant way.” Pastor Alban emphasised the beauty of God’s calling in 26

our lives—that He calls us because he wants to bless us—and that faith makes all the difference. “Through faith we will be able to experience the blessing,” he said, “Even when we don’t see the future.”

But what is the first thing about being called that we have to realise? It’s not about us. It’s about God—it’s always been about God.

A DAY AT THE MARKETS

or one afternoon The Big Tent was transformed yesterday into a bustling marketplace, where people escaped from the rain to buy and sell food, clothing and other products. There was Paul, selling honey from his own bees, and Felicity, selling My Maker and Me T-shirts. One set-up that drew in the crowds was the Asian Aid Pop-up Op Shop, run by Tiane Mison, who lives and works up in Wauchope, New South Wales, where Asian Aid is based. The not-for-profit children’s charity has predominantly worked overseas—until Ms Mison, formerly a learning support teacher, began working there. “When I came into the organisation, we had an office on the hill,” she INTRASYD

CAVE QUEST: LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS

READY, SET, FUN!

here was a golden glow on the horizon as about 50 people lined up on the road by the Big Tent for the ADRA Fun Run. The route was a 1.2 kilometre loop which participants ran (or walked) as many times as they could between the hours of 6:30 and 7:30. Between each loop, runners paused at the starting point to get a stamp. Whoever collected the most stamps by the end took the win.

The winner was year 12 student Payton Smith, who ran 10 laps—a total of 12 kilometres. In second place was his younger brother, Kyle, who ran 9 laps. Payton runs most mornings. “I’m running a marathon in August,” said Payton. “So this is good practice, to get the pace down.”

early 40 primary-aged children (6-9 years old) headed off for an afternoon of exploring the Yarrangobilly Caves. The theme for the week in the Primary division has been “Cave Quest”, where the children have been exploring what it means for Jesus to be their light.

The group explored South Glory Cave, discovering its various unique features. For many, it was their first time inside a cave and a highlight was seeing crystals inside.

Pastor David Lu reflected on the value of the trip, calling it a “culmination of a whole week’s experience. It really cements the object lesson they’ve been studying,” Pastor Lu said. “And singing the theme song—Light of the World—at the end was a great way to celebrate that occasion.”

The group returned later than expected due to bus troubles, but thankfully arrived back safely.

DREAMING OF JESUS

he pop-up Adventist book centre at Big Camp featured a selection of books as well as Patritti, nutmeat and a small selection of other Sanitarium products.

One book for sale was launched on Monday that week. Dreaming of Jesus: The George and Esther Quinlin Story is the eighth instalment in the children’s series The Angel Said Australia, written by Amanda Bews and illustrated by Jade Zivanovic.

This series is based on the 1980 book with the same title by Pastor S. Ross Goldstone, and is adapted to a more modern context, creatively telling stories of how the Adventist story is continuing in Australia.

“Read them to your kids,” said Pastor Darren Pratt, Children and Family Ministries director.

“They will thank you for them later on.”

Dreaming of Jesus follows Noah and Mia, who go camping with their parents. Throughout their first day by the river, Dad tells the story of

Pastor George Quinlin, Australia’s first ordained Adventist Indigenous pastor. From Pastor Quinlin’s early years on the Nulla Nulla Aboriginal Reserve to his faith journey alongside his wife, this story shows his influential role within the Seventh-day Adventist Church and how his life was a testament to his faith and dedication to God. “ Having worked alongside Pastor George Quinlin,” said Pastor Pratt, “he was someone who was always helpful and cared deeply for others around him.”

Aimed at young readers aged 10-13, this book honours Australia’s Indigenous people and the faith-fulness of Adventists in ministry, while encouraging readers to reflect Jesus’ love by being “like the stars in the sky.”

YOUTH PLANT HOPE

A

group from the Youth Shed headed out during camp to plant trees for a service project. They were greeted by three women who work in bush conservation, specialising in the eradication of the invasive African Lovegrass.

Jane Tracy, African Lovegrass coordinator, said the grass has a horrific impact on the natural environment and farming. “Using revegetation is one of many steps involved in managing weeds like African Lovegrass,” said Ms Tracy.

Participants in the service project learned how to plant the trees (mainly bottlebrush and acacia) and how to fold the biodegradable guards that protect the tiny saplings as they grow. They carried buckets of water, got their hands dirty and planted a total of 80 trees.

“It’s outward focused Christianity,” said Pastor Dejan Stojkovic, “The theme is empowered to go and we are empower- ing our young people to serve the community.”

round 110 Pathfinders, Adventurers and parents joined the hundreds gathered on the banks of Lake Jindabyne in Banjo Paterson Park for the Anzac Day dawn service.

“I think it’s important for the young people to attend the dawn service because it was young people who went to war to fight for their country,” said Roger Fairfax.

“We have a duty to be able to remember.”

Back at camp, at 7:30, there was a flagraising ceremony run by the Pathfinders and Adventurers. They marched up the drive to the flagpole outside the main foyer and stood in formation as the flag was raised, the Ode read and the bugle played. In his address, Pastor Dejan Stojkovic said, “We do not glorify war, for we believe in a God of peace. Yet we give thanks for those who, in the face of darkness, chose to stand for freedom, justice and the well-being of others. As Seventh-day Adventist Christians,” he added, “we hold dear the teachings of Jesus, who said in John 15:13, “There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
