COUNTRIESIN AFRICA DOING GREAT IN THE TOURIST INDUSTRY AND THEIR MODEL OF OPERATION

Tourism is the fastest-growing enterprise in Africa and is currently one of the continent?s major investment opportunities, source of jobs, and revenue for the local people. Some of the countries that benefit heavily from tourism are Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia, Kenya, and Ghana

It is worthy of note that the touristic peculiarity of Africa lies in the wide variety of points of interest, diversity, and multitudes of landscape as well as the rich cultural heritage.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), the benefits of Travel & Tourism spread far beyond its direct impacts in terms of GDPand employment, in 2019, Travel & Tourism was one of the world?s largest sectors, accounting for 10.4%of global GDP(USD 9.2 trillion), 10.6%of all jobs (334 million), and was responsible for creating 1 in 4 of all new jobs

Morocco, a North African country is one of the most visited tourist countries in Africa and falls under the category of countries with a developed tourism industry. Morocco?s relatively high number of tourists has been aided by its location, tourist attractions, and relatively low price. Some of the tourist sites in Morocco are Marrakesh Medina, Fes el Bali, Dades valley, Essaouira, Erg Chebbi, to mention but a few.

The Ministry of Tourism in Morocco develops and implements the tourism policy for the government through the Department of Tourism consisting seven regional offices and 18 provincial unit. Their main tasks are to supervise the quality of tourist activities and monitor the development of tourist products at regional and local levels. They work closely with a range of local authorities and tourism stakeholders to ensure that the sector grows evenly and consistently at all levels.

South Africa also tops the list as one of the most visited tourist countries in Africa. The country offers both domestic and international tourists a wide variety of options, among others the picturesque natural landscape and game reserves, diverse cultural heritage and highly regarded wines. Some of the most popular destinations include several national parks, such as the expansive Kruger National Park in the north of the country, the coastlines and beaches of the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape provinces, and the major cities like Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban. The South African Tourism industry generates 716,000 jobs, which are about 4.6% of the country's total employment, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), and also about 1.5 million jobs. However, the indsutry hopes to do more. The sector attracts foreign direct investment as well as promoting local businesses.

The Great Pyramid of Giza, is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and is situated in Egypt, a transcontinental country linking two continents, Asia and Africa, through the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt makes a boast in this iconic landmark among others is the Great Sphinx of Giza, the Luxor temple, Egyptian Museum, Sharm-el-sheikh a world-famous beach resort, known for its coral reefs, Khan-el-Khalili bazaar of Cairo, among others. The tourism sector is one of the largest employers in Egypt, providing 3.1 million jobs or 9.5% of the total workforce. The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for tourism policy and for establishing a coherent legal and regulatory framework for tourism development.

The tourist industries in Africa suffered a major setback and have been on a decline as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions. However, the resilient industry is gradually bouncing back on their feet.

With immense opportunities, economic and social development in the tourist sector, African countries could expand their horizons in the tourist industry in an effort to create employment and improve quality life among the locals.
