Copywriting Tips - Analogy and Testimonial Storytelling Methods That Boost Sales When you write copy for sales letters, it improves your conversions and keeps prospects on your site longer if you can tell a story while you sell. In the past I have described my two favorite types of stories: the What-If approach (start with the word "imagine" and build up imagery), and the How-To approach, where you turn your ad into an advertorial and try to teach prospects something before you sell to them. My other two favorites types of stories are the Analogy and Testimonial stories... which complete my thoughts about "W.H.A.T." types of stories you should be telling.

The "A" story is the analogy. Once, I saw a sales letter from Armand Morin where he explained the force behind a tsunami... a 600 foot tidal wave... it keeps building and building then he lead into the viral nature of the program he was promoting. To tell an analogy story, all you need to do is begin talking about some random fact and connect that to a selling point, like I just explained with Armand's sales letter.

An easy way to find trivia to kickstart analogy sales letters is to search for "snapple trivia." You can find a list of trivia such as, "The city of Los Angeles has 3 times more cars than people" or "Elephants only sleep two hours a day." Pretend you were selling a product about how to sleep better in less time. You could say, elephants only sleep two hours per day, so why are you using up four times that?

A easy story method is the Testimonial sales letter. Get people to review your product, take the best testimonial and turn their main point into a headline, their secondary point into a subheadline, and so on. You can even edit their text and expand on some of their points, with their permission of course. You can go back and interview that customer to get more details. I heard once that giving proof in testimonials takes three steps: Convince the prospect that you accomplished something, convince the prospect that someone else accomplished something, and finally convince the prospect that they themselves can accomplish the same result.

Copywriting Tips - What is the AIDA Formula?

The AIDA formula (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) is the only formula you really need to know when you write ads. It is the foundation of all selling and the sooner you understand the formula, the sooner copywriting will become an intuitive and simple process for you. Remember: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.

First, you have attention. This is the point of any headline, e-mail subject line, or the first few seconds of an audio ad. A good headline is a newsworthy half-statement that explains the benefit of what you are about to explain, without actually giving it away. An even better headline hits on your prospect's factual, emotional, and imaginative centers.

Next, you build interest through storytelling and bullet points. Interest equals benefits plus curiosity. List out the features of your product, like each chapter or video section, but do not describe those as-is. Instead, rewrite those features by asking yourself, "So what?" Then answer that question.

You will end up with more half-statements, much like the headlines, that tell prospects what the product will do for them, without giving away any huge secrets. Tell them what happens when they buy from you and what bad things will happen if they don't buy.

Later in the ad, move onto desire. Instead of just listing benefits, tell prospects what they will gain after they use your course or product. List out testimonials and case studies. Save the biggest benefits for this section and make them drool.

End with the action phase. Get them moving. Do you want prospects to call a phone number, click an order button, or type in an e-mail address? Tell people exactly what you want them to do after reading your ad, why they will do it, and what will happen to them after they do.

Apply the AIDA formula, that same formula every copywriter uses... on your e-mail marketing, direct response sales letters, even AdWords ads and everyday conversations, and you simply will not fail with copywriting.

Copywriting Tips - Super Easy Bullet Points Today I am going to tell you everything you need to know about writing BULLET POINTS in sales letters in just a couple of minutes.

Let's get real... everyone hates work. Especially when that work is lots and lots of writing. Lucky for you, even as a copywriter, you don't need to write lots and lots... because people hate to read!

Write one 2-3 sentence bullet point every hour. Just take a couple of minutes out of each hour to do it. You can write bullet points for a random headline you picked out of some ads or from one of your previous headlines... it does not matter. We are just improving your copywriting.

Copywriting Tips - 3 Ways to Come Up With a Killer Offer Of all the elements of a web page you can split test, the most important element in your copywriting is the offer. I know many copywriters who start writing copy not with the bullets, not the headlines, but the offer itself. After you have grabbed your prospect's attention and given them all the information they need, the thing that is going to get them to decide whether or not to buy is the offer.

I did not realize this until I had already been marketing on the internet for several years, and if I could go back in time and give my past self some advice, I would tell him, "Focus on the offer."

Before you do anything, you need to decide what your USP, or Unique Selling Proposition, is. What do you offer that no one else does?

For me, it was offering video in a niche where no one else offered video training, only text-based training. I have a friend who made a profit selling systemized how-to guides in a niche where everybody else tried to be comprehensive and boring. If these do not inspire you, think about the USP for Domino's Pizza, "30 minutes or it's free." Can you offer a 6-week money back guarantee, a free trial, double your money back guarantee, payment plan, or limited time offer?

Also remember to sell using "reason why" advertising. I recently came very close to purchasing a web site from somebody for $50,000 but I backed out of the deal, because the seller did not make it clear why he was selling the site. He said he was too busy focusing on other projects, but further down in the sales copy he claimed the site was completely automated and hands-off. If the site really was making money running on 100 percent autopilot, why sell the site because you are "too busy"? That lack of "reason why" advertising killed his offer.

Finally, you should introduce the concept of a dramatic low-risk policy. Provide your real physical address and phone number, and disclose your business name if you have one so prospects can easily contact your town hall or the Better Business Bureau and find out if you are legitimate.

Show a picture of yourself and your office if you have one. In addition to these usual tips, I have seen some pretty creative offers out there.
