Blue Star appears to be a no-go

It appears that the hopes of thousands of jobs coming to Wythe County have been dashed.

In November, we reported that a $230 million loan package for Blue Star NBR, which was celebrated for plans to build a glove factory and nitrile manufacturing plant in Progress Park, had been put on hold.

Plans for the nitrile glove manufacturing facility were made public in Nov. 22, 2021, with great fanfare on Lot 24 where the facility had promised to bring 2,500 good-paying jobs to the county.

That employment number would have made Blue Star the county’s biggest employer, far surpassing the current larg-

est employer, the Wythe County school system, which employs about 680 people.

The promise of those jobs touched off some worries about where the workers would come from and where they might stay. In 2021, Wythe County had a population of 28,178, according Census reports, with 19.3 percent under 18 and 22.4 percent over 65. Total employment in Wythe County in 2021 was 9,675, and housing has been suffering a shortage for some time.

The Virginia House of Delegates approved $4.6 million to provide recruitment and training for Blue Star employees.

Early on there were signs of struggles as Blue Star broke ties with American Glove Innovations, dissolving the Blue Star-AGI partnership.

Blue Star and that the company would begin hiring soon for professional positions and later in 2023 for production jobs.

Until recently, the Blue Star website said that nitrile butadiene rubber production was scheduled to begin in late 2022.

Nitrile Butadiene Rubber is a synthetic rubber used to make hoses, seals, adhesives and molded goods. Blue Star’s NBR would be used to make disposable gloves used for personal protective equipment in health care, laboratory and food service settings.

Funds aid lab U.S. Rep Morgan Griffith announced that Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded a grant of $300,000 to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation for the Southwest Virginia Regional Simulation Lab for Nursing and Allied Health.

“This grant by ARC is great news as it will be used to create

a new state-of-the-art multidisciplinary lab, providing needed opportunities for health care students and medical residents in Southwest Virginia to develop their clinical skills,” said Griffith.

According to ARC, 450 students and 11 organizations will be served through this simulation lab, as well as the potential to retain up to 50 jobs.

tionally, 40 percent of school division leaders and principals describe this current staff shortage as ‘severe’ or ‘very severe’” (“Turning the Tide”). The future of our region’s education programs is not dim, however, according to Susan Evans, WCC Dean of Transfer and Educational Partnerships.

Evans says, “I like to think that every crisis presents an opportunity. The current severe shortage of teachers encouraged the Virginia Department of Education, higher education teacher preparation programs, and local school divisions to come together to provide less costly and time-consuming pathways to teacher licensure. The current teacher shortage is creating conversations about how to retain quality teacher preparation while expediting the process to licensure. At WCC we are investing in our school divisions by increasing our education course offerings and aligning our Associates degree, beginning with high school dual enrollment courses through seamless transfer to a fouryear institution.”

WCC hired a full-time education instructor, Jennifer Nunley, to lead the program. Nunley stated, “Our goal from the beginning was to partner with our local school districts in an effort to cultivate quality teacher candidates.

We began our journey with a summer orienta-

tion that included a local district job fair and have continued by placing over 50 students in field observation within our local schools. We are also partnering with our local school districts by bringing valuable and relevant activities, like our Culturally Responsive Teaching Panel Discussion held during the fall semester. Several school educators and administrators from our region came to talk with our students on the WCC campus. The amazing and dedicated educators that volunteered their time to speak with our education students were able to provide real world insights into what teaching is like in the classroom post COVID.” WCC’s program is in alignment with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) strategic plan, and also aligns with “Turning the Tide,” a statewide strategic plan by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) designed to help students overcome barriers for receiving teacher education and training.

WCC’s goal is to pave the way for future students who want to receive Virginia K-12 teaching licensure, and to keep these bright new teachers in our service region.

Evans also worked closely with the VCCS to offer classes through WCC for those teachers who are currently working with provisional licenses. “Teachers hired by local school systems have the opportunity to complete four courses

required for Virginia state licensure here on WCC’s campus,” Evans said. “The courses that WCC is providing satisfy Board of Education professional studies requirements and include EDU 200: Foundations of Education, EDU 207: Human Growth and Development, EDU 206: Classroom Management, and EDU 250: Foundations of Special Education.”

WCC Education student, Johnee Bentley, said of the Culturally Responsive Teaching Panel Discussion, “The panel discussion really opened my eyes as to why it’s important that college students who want to be future teachers attend classes that teach the importance of creating a culturally inclusive classroom. My main takeaways from the panel discussion would be to always keep an open mind and never assume anything. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and try your best to build community, not only in the classroom, but outside of it as well.”

Bentley’s classmate, Nicole Brooks, added, “The entire experience was amazing. It made me feel more at ease about my choice to follow a teaching career and even more determined and excited to get a classroom of my own.”

Counts Family Pharmacy opens doors It’s a new name, but one that’s familiar to Wythe County residents.

Counts Pharmacy – no relation to the original Main Street Counts family – has recently joined the Wythe County community.

Ervin Counts comes to the community with decades of not only pharmacy experience but also experience as an independent pharmacist.

Counts has owned an operated as an independent pharmacy since 1992, starting out in Davenport.

Since 2003, he has owned and operated Jones & Counts in Haysi.

Counts attended VCU Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.

Joining him in this venture, for his first experience working full time as an independent pharmacist

is Counts’ son, Zack, who attended the Bill Gatton School of Pharmacy in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Zack Counts comes to the independent world with experience at CVS, Kroger and Food City pharmacies.

Conservation Corps seeks applicants Virginia State Parks are currently recruiting qualified candidates for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program for 2024.

Eligible applicants must be 14-17 years of age and going into at least their first year of high school.

Crew members will live and work in one of 42 Virginia State Parks for a twoweek session while completing trail maintenance, basic construction and park beautification projects led by adult crew leaders and park staff.

Wytheville's Most Fit

By Conner S. Felts Wytheville is a small town, but the people inside of it are anything but small.

32-year-old, Blake Musick and 37-year-old, Lori Burton are two amazing examples of the talent within Wytheville.

Blake and Lori are both members at Dynamis Fitness and Performance in Wytheville.

Dynamis Fitness and Performance utilizes a combination of functional movements and high-intensity workouts, to help individuals achieve their goals. These movements cover a wide array of modalities such as gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing, body weight movements, explosiveness and overall health-improving movements. This is all combined and executed at a high level of intensity for maximal results.

Blake started doing simple bodyweight workouts when he was about 11 years old. He

would do pushups, situps and run daily. He valued the idea of being healthy. When he got to high school, he started playing baseball at Fort Chiswell High School. Baseball is what first got him into the weight room.

When Blake graduated high school, he started doing jujitsu.

He knew he needed to train differently than he had been, so he started CrossFit. CrossFit became his main form of fitness, and he hasn’t looked back.

Lori started her fitness journey when she was 25 years old.

CrossFit was her first experience ever with working out. She fell in love with it and made it a goal to better herself within the sport.

She is now a coach at Dynamis Fitness and Performance where she teaches functional fitness.

Blake and Lori both

do the same types of workouts. They also, coincidentally, say the Snatch is their favorite lift. The snatch is a movement where the lifter must lift the bar from the floor to above the head in one singular motion while maintaining control of the barbell throughout the entire movement.

Blake and Lori say they like the snatch because it is one of the hardest movements they have ever done.

It has taken them so much time and effort to become good at the movement. It is a movement that cannot be perfected even by the best lifters. It can always be improved.

Blake says, “My favorite movement is the snatch because I had to work so hard at it.

It did not come easily to me. I had to work on my mobility in my ankles and shoulders a lot. I also like the movement because you

must be strong, fast and flexible. So basically, you have to be a little bit of everything. I think this movement is so cool.”

Lori and Blake know the importance of having a good diet. Blake focuses his diet mainly on his protein intake.

He does not directly track his calories by writing it down. He just makes sure he eats around 3,200 calories each day. The main things he focuses on is his protein intake and how much water he drinks. He typically drinks a gallon of water a day.

“Drinking this much water makes me feel good throughout my day and better during my workouts.”

Lori, on the other hand, does track her calories. She uses an app to help her keep a log of everything she eats. It is more time-

Tips to keep furry friends safe, warm

As the temperature drops, it's important to take extra precautions to ensure your furry friends stay safe and warm. Cold weather can be hazardous for pets, especially those with short coats, senior pets, and pets with certain medical conditions. Here are some tips to help keep your pets comfortable and healthy during the winter months.

Provide Shelter: Make sure your pet has access to a warm, dry shelter or kennel that protects them

from wind and precipitation. The shelter should have adequate bedding such as blankets or straw to keep them insulated.

Dress Them Up: If your pet spends time outdoors, dress them in a warm coat or sweater to help retain body heat. Choose a garment that fits well and doesn't restrict movement.

Limit Outdoor Time: Minimize your pet's exposure to extreme temperatures by limiting their outdoor time.

Take shorter walks or

play indoor games instead of playing outside for extended periods.

Tandom Smith, a senior quarter back for the George Wythe Maroons, had a wonderful season to wrap up his time on the varsity football team! Smith was named 1st all state

linebacker for the Maroons. He also received the recognition for 1st team all district line backer as well as 1st team all district QB! The whole GW football team as a

whole had a wonderful season with several recognitions in the all district and all region!

Brock Ayers, a junior Offensive lineman for the George Wythe Ma-

roons, had a great season! Ayers was named 2nd team all state O-line for the Maroons! He was also recognized as 1st team all district O-line and 1st team all region O-line!

Blake, being a seasoned weightlifter, knows the importance of going to the gym even on the days he doesn’t want to. New lifters need to understand that everyone has days when they don’t want to do it. These are the most important days to

go to the gym. These are the days that build discipline.

Lori’s advice for new lifters is to understand the importance of a good diet.

She says “You can’t outlift a bad diet. In line with that, you also have to eat a lot of food. I wish when I was first starting, someone would have told me I

needed to eat more than I was. People need to take the time to learn how to eat right.

It is just as important as working out, if not more important.”

Lori was someone who used to not take her diet as seriously as she should have. When Lori started tracking her calories and taking her diet seriously,

she made leaps and bounds in her progress.

Blake and Lori are two of the fittest people in Wytheville.

They take pride in their fitness and continue to improve each day.

Dr. Laurie Anne Ferguson, the founding dean of the School of Nursing, expressed confidence in the impact these future nurses will make, stating, “We know our future nurses will help fill the demand that our region so desperately needs.”

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Emory & Henry College stands as a testament to the institution’s commitment to providing a baccalaureate degree that prepares graduates to excel in the National Council Licensure Examination for entry into practice as registered nurses.

“Our goal is to prepare

nurses who provide highquality care, can demonstrate critical thinking skills, and can assist patients in navigating an increasingly complex healthcare system, with increased focus on health promotion,” added Ferguson.

The Baccalaureate Degree program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and has received initial approval from the Virginia Board of Nursing. Round the Mountain presenting first artisan conference in April The ‘Round the Mountain Artisan Network is proud to present the inaugural Southwest Virginia Artisan Conference: Celebrating Appalachian Arts.

The three-day educational conference and networking event will be held April 2527, in Abingdon. The im-

mersive experience will be a unique gathering that pays homage to the craftsmanship deeply rooted in the Appalachian region.

Attendees can anticipate rich and collaborative opportunities, featuring insightful discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking

experiences. More than 150 attendees are expected to attend this first-time event.
