United Salt moving to Phase II

United Salt Corporation recently announced approval to complete Phase II of the expansion of its Saltville production facility.

The Saltville facility was bought in 2007 and produces evaporated salt for the food, pool, agricultural feed, chemicals and oilfield markets.

Phase II is set to fo-

cus on process equipment upgrades that will further increase the plant’s production capacity, particularly to maximize the output of the modern, highspeed packaging equipment installed in Phase I. Once both phases

have been completed, the Saltville facility will realize a production capacity increase of almost 25%.

tion. In business since 1928, the Company is based in Houston, Texas. Its salt products are produced at facilities located in Hockley and Baytown, Texas; Saltville; and Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Mills brings 15-plus years experience to Ballad position

Sean Mills, an accomplished executive with more than 15 years of experience in managing hospital finances, has joined Ballad Health to serve as the chief financial officer for its Northern Region.

Mills will oversee all the finances of the Northern Region, which covers the health system’s hospitals in Bristol, Kingsport and Southwest Virginia, including Bristol Regional Medical Center, Holston Valley

United Way hosts Business Challenge United Way of Southwest Virginia (UWSWVA) is hosting a Childcare Business Challenge to strengthen and expand early childhood care and education centers in Grayson, Russell, Smyth and Washington Counties.

The six-week Business Challenge will help entrepreneurs and existing business owners develop business plans and learn industry best practices from business management experts. At the end of the six weeks, participants will be better equipped

to reduce costs, increase profits, reduce burn-out, and potentially win up to $10,000 in grant funds.

early childhood education and care are better prepared for success in k-12, which leads to greater self-sufficiency and careers with higher-paying jobs.”

The Childcare Business Challenge is a project of Shared Services Alliance, a newly launched program of the United Way of Southwest Virginia that is intended to strengthen the business acumen of operations so that providers can focus more on their mission, the children, and the families they serve.

Funds aid lab OKeefe named COO at Ballad U.S. Rep Morgan Griffith announced that Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded a grant of $300,000 to the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center Foundation for the Southwest Virginia Regional Simulation Lab for Nursing and Allied Health.

“This grant by ARC is great news as it will be used to create

a new state-of-the-art multidisciplinary lab, providing needed opportunities for health care students and medical residents in Southwest Virginia to develop their clinical skills,” said Griffith.

According to ARC, 450 students and 11 organizations will be served through this simulation lab, as well as the potential to retain up to 50 jobs.

Ballad Health Medical Associates has named Meridith OKeefe, a seasoned healthcare executive, as its new chief operating officer.

OKeefe, who joined Ballad Health in September, brings more than 20 years of experience to her new role.

As chief operating officer for Ballad Health Medical Associates, she will continue growing the medical group while optimiz-

ing its performance by meeting the needs of patients where they are. She will also play a pivotal role in carrying out Ballad Health’s mission to make highquality healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone in the Appalachian Highlands.

“As a professional, I’m very passionate about the sustainable delivery of regional healthcare – it’s important to me that ev-

eryone has access to the high-quality care they need and deserve, through traditional doctors’ appointments or through telemedicine,” OKeefe said.

OKeefe began her career in healthcare administration with McKesson (formerly Medaphis Physician Services). She transitioned to consulting with Deloitte, followed by leadership roles with large academic medical centers.

Turning the tide WCC addressing teacher shortage

Wytheville Community College is taking steps to address Virginia’s public teacher shortage, a trend that is nationwide and not unique to the state. According to the Virginia Department of Education, citing survey results from EdWeek Research Center, “Na Wytheville Community College is taking steps to address Virginia’s public teacher shortage, a trend that is nationwide and not unique to the state. The future of our region’s education programs is not dim, however, according to Susan Evans, WCC Dean of Transfer and Educational Partnerships. Evans says, “I like to think that every crisis presents an opportunity. The current severe shortage of teachers encouraged the Virginia Department of Education, higher education teacher preparation programs, and local school divisions to come together to provide less costly and timeconsuming pathways to teacher licensure. The current teacher shortage is creating conversations about how to retain quality teacher preparation while expediting the process to licensure. At WCC we are investing in our school divisions by increasing our education course offerings and aligning our Associates degree, beginning with high school dual enrollment courses through seamless transfer to a four-year institution.”

WCC hired a full-time education instructor, Jennifer Nunley, to lead the program. Nunley stated, “Our goal from the beginning was to partner with our local school districts in an effort to cultivate qual-

We began our journey with a summer orientation that included a local district job fair and have continued by placing over 50 students in field observation within our local schools. We are also partnering with our local school districts by bringing valuable and relevant activities, like our Culturally Responsive Teaching Panel Discussion held during the fall semester. Several school educators and administrators from our region came to talk with our students on the WCC campus. The amazing and dedicated educators that volunteered their time to speak with our education students were able to provide real world insights into what teaching is like in the classroom post COVID.” WCC’s program is in alignment with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) strategic plan, and also aligns with “Turning the Tide,” a statewide strategic plan by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) de-

signed to help students overcome barriers for receiving teacher education and training. WCC’s goal is to pave the way for future students who want to receive Virginia K-12 teaching licensure, and to keep these bright new teachers in our service region.

Evans also worked closely with the VCCS to offer classes through WCC for those teachers who are currently working with provisional licenses.

“Teachers hired by local

school systems have the opportunity to complete four courses required for Virginia state licensure here on WCC’s campus,” Evans said. “The courses that WCC is providing satisfy Board of Education professional studies requirements and include EDU 200: Foundations of Education, EDU 207: Human Growth and Development, EDU 206: Classroom Management, and EDU 250: Foundations of Special Education.”

WCC Education student, Johnee Bentley, said of the Culturally Responsive Teaching Panel Discussion, “The panel discussion really opened my eyes as to why it’s important that college students who want to be future teachers attend classes that teach the importance of creating a culturally inclusive classroom. My main takeaways from the panel discussion would be to always keep an open mind and never assume anything. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and try your best to build community, not only in the classroom, but outside of it as well.”

Bentley’s classmate, Nicole Brooks, added, “The entire experience was amazing. It made me feel more at ease about my choice to follow a teaching career and even more determined and excited to get a classroom of my own.”

Youth Conservation Corps seeks applicants Virginia State Parks are currently recruiting qualified candidates for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program for 2024. Eligible applicants must be 14-17 years of age and going into at least their first year of high school.

Crew members will live and work in one of 42 Virginia State Parks for a twoweek session while completing trail maintenance, basic construction and park beautification projects led by adult crew leaders and park staff.

Applications are accepted until March 15.

The program session dates: 1st Session: June 16 - 29 2nd Session: July 7 - 20 “Participants will find this program to be both challenging and rewarding,” said Youth Engagement Coordinator Scarlett Stevens. “This program is not a summer camp. No prior outdoor work experience is required, but participants should expect to spend their weekdays working hard in the heat, and weekends exploring the natural beauty of Virginia.”

Room and board are provided, and crew members will

receive a $750 stipend at the end of the two-week session.

Driven by the suggestion she should sell her goods, her hobby quickly evolved into a full-fledged business.

In a matter of months, Smith's dream blossomed into a bustling bakery.

When asked how she started her business, Smith elaborated, “When I started my cottage bakery, everything was done from our very small kitchen. After a couple of weeks, we quickly realized that I needed more space.”

Smith looked around for a place to rent, however in a creative twist, she converted the back of her home into a baking space by leveraging the space's history as a beauty salon and using existing electrical out-

lets and plumbing.

Fueled by the success of her cookie business, Smith equipped her kitchen, turning obstacles into stepping stones.

Perhaps the most unique part of her cottage bakery is the pick up window, thought of for ease of use for her customers. Smith has utilized this element that is original to the house but has had to think outside the box as winter weather has arrived for new ways for customers to pick up their orders.

According to Smith, this will be her next upgrade.

Smith is pleased with th bakery and the updates thus far, stating, “Overall, it was a fairly easy transition with few obstacles, which makes me believe this is what I'm supposed to be doing with my life.”

The Sweet Lipsy’s Facebook page is always busy with shared photos of baked goods being created and put in the case. Her customers leave rave reviews such as Madison Rouse’s enthusiastic indorsement, “AMAZING cookies!!! 1000/10 recommend trying her out.”

Smith’s creations never seem to last long before someone scoops them up.

There always seems to be an urgency to get them while they are hot. Signature recipes like the Caramel Apple cookies, Cotton Candy cookies, and Blueberry Lemonade cookies showcase Smith's in-

novative spirit.

According to Smith, she strives to do things differently, offering her customers things that they cannot obtain locally. She loves a chal-

lenge to create something that others are not currently offering.

State park race series kicks off in February Virginia State Parks’ oneof-a-kind multi-sport race series kicks off on Feb. 18.

This year’s Adventure Series presented by Dominion Energy consists of 24 races, including triathlons, mountain biking races, adventure races and more.

The competitions will be held at 13 different parks across the state, from the coast to the mountains.

While many long-time Adventure Series favorites are returning this year, including the Tour de Pocahontas, Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon and New River Trail Challenge, participants have four new options to choose from: the DMV Adventure Race, Arbor Day 15k Run, Shenandoah River Aquablaze and Fall Foliage Adventure Race.

Adventure Series participants can win prizes by earning points in the competition category or the achievement category.

Group expands Patriot Garden program

Appalachian Sustainable Development is expanding its resources for military veterans through a new, three-year Patriot Garden program. Arnold advances legislation in House

Jed Arnold hit the ground running for his first General Assembly session representing the 46th district Arnold filed several

bills dealing with criminal justice, including one that would create a rebuttable presumption against bail for certain criminal offenses.

Another piece of legislation patroned by Arnold would create mandatory minimums for those convicted of possession of con-

trolled substances.

The bill would include mandatory jail time and fines for those caught with a Schedule I or II drug.

Arnold also was chief patron on a bill that would have constitutional offices identified on the ballot by his or her political party.

One other piece of Arnold legislation would require facilities providing inpatient substance abuse treatment to prepare a certified discharge plan.

Smith elaborates, “I want to see all of my customers pleased with my products, if they aren’t happy then I’m not doing my job. I talk to my customers just like they are my family or friends. They are welcome and I sincerely hope to see them again.”

Tips to keep furry friends safe, warm

As the temperature drops, it's important to take extra precautions to ensure your furry friends stay safe and warm. Cold weather can be hazardous for pets, especially those with short coats, senior pets, and pets with certain medical conditions. Here are some tips to help keep your pets comfortable and healthy during the winter months.

Provide Shelter: Make sure your pet has access to a warm,

dry shelter or kennel that protects them from wind and precipitation. The shelter should have adequate bedding such as blankets or straw to keep them insulated.

Dress Them Up: If your pet spends time outdoors, dress them in a warm coat or sweater to help retain body heat. Choose a garment that fits well and doesn't restrict movement.

Limit Outdoor Time: Minimize your pet's

exposure to extreme temperatures by limiting their outdoor time.

Take shorter walks or play indoor games instead of playing outside for extended periods.

Hydrate and Feed: Increase your pet's food intake slightly to compensate for the energy they burn to stay warm. Also, make sure they have plenty of fresh water to drink.

Round the Mountain presenting first artisan conference in April The ‘Round the Mountain Artisan Network is proud to present the inaugural Southwest Virginia Artisan Conference: Celebrating Appalachian Arts.

The three-day educational conference and networking event will be held April 2527, in Abingdon. The im-

mersive experience will be a unique gathering that pays homage to the craftsmanship deeply rooted in the Appalachian region.

Attendees can anticipate rich and collaborative opportunities, featuring insightful discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking

experiences. More than 150 attendees are expected to attend this first-time event.

“The arts have become a significant economic driver in Southwest Virginia as our region continues to expand the creative economy and become a destination for visitors,” said Kim Davis, Exec-

Third season of SWVA podcast released on Jan. 22 The third season of the Stories from Southwest Virginia podcast launched with its first episode Jan. 22 to the public on streaming platforms.

The podcast is produced by Friends of Southwest Virginia and raises awareness about the creative economy throughout the 19-county, four city region the

organization covers.

Episodes throughout season three will be released weekly.

The third season will feature two new hosts to the podcast, including Director of Marketing Olivia Bailey.

Bailey joined the Friends of Southwest Virginia team in September 2022 after a decade-long career

in broadcast journalism at Bristol-based WCYB. Bailey is joined by co-host and co-producer Ryan Vaughan. Vaughan is a third-year student at Emory & Henry College and joined the Friends of Southwest Virginia team as an intern in August 2023.

The Stories from Southwest Virginia podcast will feature

a number of exciting topics throughout the region, including outdoor recreation, arts and craft, music, and cultural heritage. The season kicks off its first episode with the new executive director of The Crooked Road, Tyler Hughes, and pays tribute to the 20th anniversary celebration for the organization and its

role in promoting the musical heritage of Southwest Virginia.

Additional episodes also include iconic locations throughout Southwest Virginia including the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum, Mountain Lake Lodge, the High Knob region, and the New River Valley. Season

three also features ‘Round the Mountain artisans Jen Otey and Nicholas Barnes to highlight the artistic community and promote handmade craft throughout the region.
