CHILHOWIE, Va. – With the sting of last season’s firstround state playoff loss still fresh, the Chilhowie Warriors football team is back on the field, eager for another opportunity.
Under the steady leadership of coach Reid Sturgill, they’re gearing up for the 2024 season and another shot at the VHSL Class 1 state playoffs. Entering his second year, Sturgill is determined to build on last season's success, which saw the Warriors reach the first round of the
state playoffs before a narrow, heart-wrenching 28-21 loss to Twin Springs.
Despite losing 11 seniors last year and facing the prospect of losing 14 more this year, the 2024 Chilhowie Warriors remain competitive, driven, and focused on capitalizing on last year’s success.
Key players to watch this season include junior quarterback Asher Chapman and senior wide receiver Noah Hill, who will lead the offensive charge. Chapman’s ability to read defenses and Hill’s speed and agility make them a formidable duo. On the defen-
sive side, junior Landon Hall and senior strong safety Drake Grinstead are expected to be significant playmakers.
Their defensive prowess was key for Chilhowie last year. Sturgill has high hopes for these players and the rest of the team, citing substantial growth in leadership and strength during preseason practices. Their performance will be crucial in navigating the demanding Hogoheegee District schedule .
Reflecting on last year’s achievements and the up -

coming challenges, Sturgill remains optimistic. “In our preseason workouts in November, I asked the returning players to step up in leadership and strength. The players answered the call,” he said. “We’re ready to face a tough Hogoheegee District schedule.”
Sturgill’s vision for the team goes beyond just physical preparedness; he emphasizes mental toughness and strategic thinking, elements that were evident in last season’s
critical moments.
The Warriors showcased their mental toughness last season with a thrilling last-second field goal by Justin Gonzalez to secure a 17-14 victory over Holston, advancing to the Class 1 Region playoffs. This win highlighted the potential and grit of the football team.
It wasn’t just about advancing to the playoffs; it was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure. That mental attitude

has become the foundation upon which Coach Sturgill is building the team’s future.
Sturgill benefits from the wisdom and experience of previous head coaches Mike Sturgill, Larry Russell, and Jeff Robinson, who remain active on the sideline as assistant coaches. This collective football knowledge spans 29 years and provides a rare advantage for a second-year head coach. The mentorship and insights from these seasoned coaches are in -
strumental in developing a cohesive and strategic approach to the game.
As the 2024 season approaches, the Warriors are focused not just on winning games but on building a legacy of excellence and resilience that will inspire future generations of Chilhowie football players. Sturgill is excited about the season and his Warrior football team getting their chance at a state playoff run again this year. Still, Sturgill stresses the toughness of the Hogoheegee

CHISWELL, Va.
— In Coach Zane Quesenberry’s second season at the helm, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers aim to build on past successes and set a new standard for the upcoming year.
Last season, the Pioneers posted a 5-7 overall record, bowing out in the second round of the Region 1C playoffs against George Wythe. They began the season with a strong 3-1 record but faced challenges in the tough Mountain Empire District, finishing the season 2-6 in conference play.
The team is a mix of veterans and new talent, all committed to improving in Coach Quesenberry’s second year.
“This year’s team is a great group of guys,” Coach Quesenberry notes. “They are all football junkies who love the game and love to
study it. We lost some talented seniors who were key to our offense, but we have a good number of players with varsity experience returning—about seven or eight starters on both sides of the ball.”
A significant focus for the Pioneers this season will be their defense.
“I think we have the potential to be a good defensive team,” Quesenberry says. “Offensively, we have capable playmakers, so it will be exciting to see who steps up and provides consistent production.”
Coach Quesenberry is optimistic about the challenges ahead.
“We return a lot of guys who contributed last year, players who know how to win games and have learned from losses, myself and our coaching staff included. It’s going to be a big challenge, but I truly think we will be able to capitalize on it.”
Fans planning to at -
tend Friday night games can look forward to seeing several players making a significant impact. Quarterback Cam Alley will lead the charge on offense, with wide receivers Brayden Billings and Chase Hetherington, running backs
Ethan Martin and Amarion Dickens, and offensive
linemen Brenden Mabry, Boston White, and John Dalton providing support. Defensively, the team will rely on the talents of linebackers Carter Bailey, Garett Stone, Zayne Sayers, and Amarion Dickens, as well as defensive backs Brayden Billings and

Ethan Martin, and defensive linemen Aiden Jones and Brenden Mabry. Each of these players brings unique skills that contribute to the team’s overall strategy and gameplay.
The Pioneers’ competitive spirit will be crucial in their quest to stand out in the Mountain Empire District and region play.
“You can count on us to be competitive,” says Quesenberry. “We are motivated to continue to improve, get more wins in district play, and earn better playoff seeding.”
Although relatively new to Fort Chiswell, Quesenberry has brought innovative ideas to the team’s strategy. “We’ve made some tweaks to our scheme to help put our kids in a position to be successful. That comes from learning new things this past offsea-
son and evaluating what we did last year. But we’re still hanging our hats on being a FAMILY and competing with relentless effort each day.”
The Pioneers face a challenging schedule ahead, with key matchups against district rivals that will test their mettle. Games against George Wythe, Galax, and Grayson County are particularly anticipated, as these teams have historically been strong contenders in the Mountain Empire District. The Pioneers will need to bring their A-game to these matches to secure crucial wins.
With a blend of experience, new strategies, and a passion for the game, the Fort Chiswell Pioneers are poised for an exciting season. They open their season at home against the Rural Retreat Indians on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

WYTHEVILLE, Va. — After finishing the 2023 season with a 9-4 record and falling to the Galax Maroon Tide in the Region C Championship game — their Mountain Empire
District rivals and the eventual VHSL

SALTVILLE, Va. —
Despite the team’s youth, they are leveraging last year’s experience to compete effectively. They have dedicated themselves to an
year ahead.
As the season approaches, the Panthers are focused on playing with intensity and unity.
Coach Prater believes that the team’s hard work and dedication will translate into wins.
“We’re excited that football is here,” said Coach Prater. “We’re mixing our offense up a little and getting comfortable with the changes we’re making. The team is picking it up quickly.”
Key players Brandon Woodward, Austin Graber, Drake Maiden, Will Minton, and Caleb Havens have led the team through a rigorous summer training regimen. Despite a setback with the loss of Eli Williams due to a seasonending injury, the team remains optimistic.
“Our strength lies in the depth of players who have gained valuable playing
experience,” Prater explained. “This is a great group of kids who work hard and are ready for the season to start. I believe we can be better than we were last year. We just have to trust in ourselves, play four quarters of football, and take care of the little things.”
Players like Brody Waddle, Dalton Gates, Jake Barlow, Will Brown, John Garner, Gabe Frye, and Dominick Haynes are expected to play crucial roles on both sides of the ball.
The team is focused on minimizing mistakes and staying concentrated on each game as it comes.
“This is a really good district and region,” Coach Prater noted. “We just have to take it one game at a time, limit our mistakes, and focus on the task at hand.”

RURAL RETREAT, Va. – As high school football season approaches in Southwest Virginia, the Rural Retreat Indians are gearing up for an exciting 2024 season under veteran head coach Jamey Hughes. Building on momentum from the latter half of the 2023 season, the team is eager to take the field.
“The guys were able to build some excitement with the second half of the season last fall, and they have some goals for the upcoming season,” Hughes said. “We are definitely looking forward to getting on the field in an official capacity in August.”
Despite injuries and a first-round exit in the Class 1 Region D playoffs last year

against Hogoheegee District rival Honaker, the Indians remain optimistic.
Hughes expressed confidence in the team’s potential, even after losing a strong group of seniors. He noted that the returning players have shown remarkable commitment in the weight room and are eager to build on last season’s experiences.
“We have a nice core group of guys returning,” Hughes said, acknowledging the challenges posed by the loss of experienced players. He remains optimistic that the team’s dedication will compensate for these key losses.
When asked about capitalizing on last year’s achievements, Hughes emphasized the importance of focus. “If we can stay focused on improving and becoming better teammates daily, I feel like we will have a good chance to build on last year’s season,” he said. Hughes’ approach aims to foster continuous growth and team cohesion, which is crucial for developing a uccessful high school program.

line looks strong this season, with four returning starters. Junior Eli Poole (6 feet, 208 pounds) will be joined by seniors Lucas Shrader (6-foot-4, 245 pounds), Graydon Irvin (6 feet, 207 pounds), and Brandon Smith (6 feet, 247 pounds).
Hughes elaborated on the returning players, stating that several linemen played significant minutes last fall, and the experience they bring back should be a substantial advantage. This returning experience is a key factor in their potential improvement this season.
Fans attending Friday night games should expect to see various players stepping up.
“We have several versatile guys on both sides of the ball, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see a different player lead the way each week on either side of the ball,” Hughes noted. This versatility is expected to be a significant asset throughout the season.
The Indians' offensive
The primary ball carriers will be juniors Trevor Shelton (6 feet, 172 pounds) and Hunter Vaught (5-foot-11, 175 pounds), both of whom led the team in rushing yards. Senior receiver Austin Umberger (6-foot-1, 197 pounds) is an athletic standout, having won the region championship in the high jump. Chaz Penwright, who threw a touchdown pass last season, will also be a key contributor. According to Hughes,
top really depends on who comes out and plays each week. It’s a tough district to play in, week in and week out.”
The Maroons’ offense will rely heavily on its seasoned offensive line, which returns all five starters, including four seniors. The line is anchored by Brock Ayers, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound powerhouse who earned first-team AllRegion and second-team All-State honors. Ayers, who has an offer from Ferrum College, is joined by Kyle Stephens, Dylan Sisk, Hollis Rigney, and center Gunnery Gray.
Shane Huff, a senior who also led the Maroons to the state basketball championship game, will take the helm at quarterback. Trey Rainey is set to start at running back, with Holden Luttrell and Luke Clarke lining up at receiver, and Brayden Rainey at tight end.
The Maroons’ defense also features a robust lineup, with four seniors starting on the defensive line.
Brock Ayers and Kyle Stephens will man the inside, while Brayden Rainey and Dylan Sisk will handle the edge. Senior Luke Clarke is set to start at outside linebacker, with junior Cam Skeens stepping into the inside linebacker role.
In the secondary, Shane Huff and junior Kaden Irby will cover the corners, with Rainey and Holden Luttrell providing safety support as
the last line of defense.
Under Harner’s leadership, the focus remains on building strong relationships with players and getting the best effort out on the field. With more experienced players adding depth to both the offense and defense, the Maroons are well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the upcoming season and vie for a state title.

the team plans to rely on its skilled players, who are comfortable with the ball, to lead the offense, and there is considerable excitement about this group’s potential.
Discussing the Hogoheegee District and region play, Hughes noted the competitive nature of their district. “Our district is always competitive, and
I look for that to continue this season,” he remarked. Hughes also noted how tough Class 1 Region D will be. “As far as the region goes, several teams return the majority of their ros -
ters, so they will be tough to beat.”
However, Hughes emphasized that the Indians must excel in the regular season to have a strong playoff run. “We will have
to take care of business in the regular season before we can worry about the playoffs.”
As the Indians prepare for the season, fans can expect a team ready to face
a tough district with aspirations of making a deep playoff run. Rural Retreat faces off against in-county rival Fort Chiswell on Aug. 30 at Fort Chiswell at 7 p.m.
