Wythe nabs $20k in tourism funding Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced that more than $757,000 in matching grant funds will be awarded to 131 small businesses, Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs), downtown business associations, and chambers of commerce as part of the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) Microbusiness Marketing Leverage Program (MMLP).

The program is designed to leverage local marketing dollars with matching state funds to increase visitation and traveler spending in the off-season. This funding cycle, local partners will commit more than $1.1 million in private-public sector funds to match the VTC funding, providing more than $1.9 million in

new marketing activity focused on small businesses and off-season visitation. Funding will be awarded to 131 marketing programs, ultimately impacting 655 combined partners, and supporting more than 1,300 jobs.

“Virginia Tourism’s Microbusiness Marketing Leverage Program provides the tourism industry with the tools they need to succeed and thrive in an incredibly competitive landscape,” said Rita McClenny, President and CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation. “Tourism is a multibilliondollar industry in Virginia, and it is imperative that we are able to market the abundance of travel experiences across the Commonwealth year-round and invite travelers to discover for them-

selves why Virginia is for Lovers.”

The VTC Microbusiness Marketing Leverage Program is designed to increase visitor spending by leveraging limited marketing dollars, to stimulate new tourism marketing through partnerships, and to extend the Virginia is for Lovers brand to drive off-season visitation. Using the hub and spoke tourism model, five Virginia entities partner financially to apply for funding.

Partners may consist of Virginia cities, towns, counties, convention and visitors’ bureaus, chambers of commerce, other local or regional destination marketing organizations, private businesses, museums, attractions, cultural events, and other tourismrelated businesses.

The VTC Microbusiness Marketing Program was created in 2022 to provide marketing funding to target off-season visitation to tourism-oriented small businesses with less than 20 full-time employees. Designed to drive overnight visitation during fall, winter, and early spring, the program provided up to $10,000 in matching dollars for marketing initiatives. Small businesses were eligible for up to $5,000, while DMOs, downtown business associations, and chambers of commerce were eligible for up to $10,000.

“With the grant funding, we will be able to broaden our marketing horizons and share our Five Over 5000 Challenge to hikers across the Blue Ridge,” said Sarah Gil-

lespie, Executive Director, Smyth County Chamber of Commerce.

“We will now be able to highlight not only our natural resources, but also promote our small businesses in a new, unique way. As the Smyth County Chamber of Commerce and HL Bonham Regional Tourism Center operators, we can cross-promote our natural assets and small businesses during the shoulder season and highlight Smyth County as a hiker-centered weekend destination.

While attracting tourists during the shoulder season, we will be able to entice them to visit again across the seasons and give our small business a boost when they need it most.”

Wythe’s A&G Safety Solutions finalist

Midlothian-based fertilizer company NTP Technologies earned top honors in the second annual Virginia Foundation for Agriculture, Innovation and Rural Sustainability Agricultural and Forestry Innovation Challenge.

The competition, also known as the “Bull Pen,” was held during the 2023 Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention in Virginia Beach. Winners were announced during the convention’s opening luncheon on Nov. 28.

NTP Technologies was awarded the competition’s grand prize of $10,000 in addition to $2,500 for plac-

ing among the five finalists.

Wilmer Stoneman, vice president of agriculture, development and innovation for VFBF, described the Bull Pen as an entrepreneurial competition that highlights innovative practices in agriculture and businesses “that are going the extra mile for value-added production.”

The challenge aims to “foster entrepreneurial ideas that support the agricultural and forestry industries in Virginia,” added Tony Banks, senior assistant director of VFBF agriculture, development and innovation.

Participants were asked to

describe why their business proposals were innovative and, if executed, how they would benefit the commonwealth’s agricultural and forestry sectors.

John Ireland, CEO of NTP Technologies, said that as global populations rise, there is a growing need for a nitrogen fertilizer substitute. NTP has created one through its proprietary, non-thermal plasma technology that generates affordable, sustainable, saltfree nitrates that use only air and electricity as inputs.

“Even though it’s a global problem, it’s the local farmers that are really interested in alternative solutions to

helping them be better stewards of the land, as well as making sure they’re actually growing,” Ireland said.

NTP Technologies aims to address farmers’ concerns with sustainability, price volatility and availability of fertilizers by “mimicking Mother Nature’s way of doing it.”

“We’re turning an operating cost into a capital cost—you buy the machine initially, and you produce fertilizer over the years at a lower cost than you’d buy in the markets,” Ireland explained.

Crash kills two A Nov. 22 crash on Interstate 77 in Wythe County killed a couple from Ohio.

Virginia State Police said the fatal crash occurred at 7:05 a.m. at the 42-mile marker in Wythe County’s I-77 when a 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis traveling north pulled off onto the right shoulder and then attempted to cross the northbound lanes from the

shoulder to use the emergency crossover.

The car was struck by a northbound tractortrailer.

Police said the driver, Jamie A. Pittman, 64, and passenger, Debra L. Pittman, 68, both of Orrville, Ohio, died at the scene.

Both were wearing seat belts.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the crash.

Wythe County received $146,216 for Fort Chiswell High and Middle schools and George Wythe High School.

Smyth County schools received $114,581 for Atkins, Chilhowie, Marion, Oak Point, Rich Valley, Saltville and Sugar Grove elementary schools, Marion and Northwood middle schools and Chilhowie High School.

Galax High School received $250,000.

Carroll County received $148,612 for Carroll County High and Middle schools and Fancy Gap, Gladeville and Laurel Elementary schools.

Washington County netted $96,464 for Abingdon and Meadowview elementary schools and Damascus, E.B. Stanley, Glade Spring and Wallace middle schools.

Bristol City schools Joseph Van Pelt Elementary and Virginia Middle schools received $46,775.

Pulaski County Senior High School received $80,405.

implemented an innovative plan to ease our students’ transition into college,” Sprinkle stated.

While FTE is up across the Virginia Community College System, WCC is one of three community colleges that are up by double digits.

By providing small group advising sessions, for instance, WCC’s newest students are able to get oneon-one attention and time from WCC staff. Students become acquainted with

the campus, courses, and programs. Academic advisors, financial aid advisors, scholarship managers, and program deans are on hand to assist with registration and with plans to make each student’s education affordable. Students in these small group sessions are provided lunch and are able to talk with their new classmates, meet several of their teachers, and participate in a campus tour.

Other contributing factors to enrollment increase include:

New and Revitalized Programs: WCC continually invests in program expansions for academic and workforce programs, ensuring that students can access a wide range of disciplines and courses that align with their interests and career goals.

Friday, Dec. 15 Millwald Theatre: The Tree of Forgiveness Band – a John Prine tribute outfit, will play Dec. 15 t 8 p.m. In December 2021, a group of all-star musicians from North Carolina got together to perform the music of John Prine in Elkin, North Carolina.

The show was supposed to be a one-off night sponsored by The Reeves Theater and Cafe, but the musicians quickly realized there was a very special and unique ‘magic’ happening on stage that evening. The Tree of

Forgiveness Band – A Tribute to John Prine performs music that spans the life and career of Mr. John Prine. School Board race goes to recount The ballots are all counted, but at least one race in Wythe County may have to be counted again.

In the four-person School Board at-large race, Julia Tomiak, as of a week past Election Day, holds a fourvote lead with 2,049 votes to Mack Pruett’s 2,045.

The Voter Registrar’s office certified the election on Tuesday; however, Preutt requested a recount. Voter Registrar Lennon Counts said he hopes to have the final results by Jan. 1, 2024.

In another close race, the official count shows incumbent Treasurer Lori Guynn

beating Lisa Shelton by 282 votes. Guynn had trailed earlier on Election Night counts, but appears to have been put over the top by early voting.

The rest of the races were much less hotly contested and sometimes not at all. A case in point is

too, in the commonwealth’s attorney’s race, and Sheriff Charles Foster got 98 percent in his uncontested race.

Adam Linkous won the Commissioner of Revenue post with 63 percent of the vote. In the Board of Supervisors races, Stacy Terry re-

turned to the board with 77 percent of the vote. Fellow incumbents Rolland Cook and Jamie Smith also won re-election with 97 percent and 98 percent of the vote, respectively. Dickie Morgan claimed the Zion Precinct seat with 56 percent of the vote.

“I want to create opportunities to support the performing arts in our community in addition to purchasing a ticket.”

The secret to success, Bales said, is summed up in one word. “Engagement.” He wants the Millwald to be a cultural hub, providing access to the arts and offering programming for all audiences.

“I think the fundamental role of the Millwald is to be a cultural gathering place of entertainment, education, and civic dialogue,” Bales said.

Coming from the Blumenthal, Bales said he learned about being pro-

active on programming, educational offerings and overall patron experience.

“Blumenthal has also had a balanced focus on local artists and national talent and that is definitely my vision for the Millwald.”

Before re-locating to Charlotte, Bales owned his own business and worked at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre.

Solid community connections came from his time at the theater.

“For example, I worked with Shane Terry who is now at Visit Wytheville and already a great partner to the Millwald.”

Running his own business, Bales said, taught him to wear different hats and learn on the fly

about the importance of marketing, finance, community partnerships and content. All of those will be essential in his new role, he said.

“In working with the county and IDA, I quickly learned how supportive everyone is and wants every business to succeed.”

In particular, Bales said, the arts drive tourism and revenue, generating more than $166 billion in economic activity annually. Attendees, he said, spend an average of $31 per person on tickets, meals, parking and lodging.

It’s a lot of money on the table, in a bigger city like Charlotte and in a small town like Wytheville.

“I’ve always joked that Charlotte is a city with small town vibes so there are a lot more similarities than one would think,” he said. “I’ve been overjoyed by the community reaction to my hiring and the comments I’ve heard from everyone wanting success not only for the Millwald but for everything in Wytheville.”

Who is on your Spotify list of most streamed?

The Rolling Stones – I’ve always been a fan of rock with blues influences. The Stones still

put on the best concert I’ve ever been to and still sound just as great as they were in their prime.

The Band – There is such an honest and real sound to The Band that I’ve always loved. Robbie Robertson’s guitar licks and Levon Helm’s voice are one of the best pairings in rock history.

The Punch Brothers – Having grown up in the area, I’m partial to anything with a mandolin. I love this band and their music because they explore the intersection between classical and traditional bluegrass.

What is your favorite play?

True West by Sam Shepard. I was lucky enough to see a pro-

duction at Roundabout Theatre Company with Ethan Hawke and Paul Dano that was a masterclass in acting and an experience I’ll never forget.

Favorite movie?

It’s a bit like picking your favorite children but you cannot go wrong with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Raiders is still a rollercoaster that in my opinion hasn’t been matched by even todays’ blockbusters. It’s clear that Spielberg’s movement of the camera and storytelling come from influences such as John Ford and Akira Kurosawa; but it’s how he took those inspirations and made it his own is what makes his films so special.

Rising Tide sinks Maroons The Tide swelled on Saturday, leading Galax to hoist the Region 1C championship trophy on Pendleton Field.

The Maroon Tide edged the Maroons 1714 to keep their season rolling and bringing to an end a memorable season for the boys from Wytheville. The win pits Galax against Honaker in the state semifinal contest with a shot at the state title game in Salem on the line.

GW got on the board first, taking a 7-0 win in the first frame thanks to a one-yard plunge from standout QB Tandom Smith.

River Turtles ready for new baseball season

A new season of Pulaski River Turtles baseball is slated to begin Tuesday, June 4, on the road against the newest member of the Appalachian League, the Tri-State baseball organization located on the campus of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. Opening Night at Calfee Park is scheduled for Friday, June 7, against the Bluefield Ridge Runners, featuring a dazzling post-game fireworks display.

The 2024 Pulaski River Tur-

tles schedule includes 24 home games, with 11 home games in June and 13 home games in July, with the regular season finale scheduled for Wednesday, July 31 . In total, the 2024 schedule boasts 48 dates.

All home games will begin at 7 p.m. with the exception of Sunday contests, which will move up to a 5:30 p.m. start time in 2024.

A collection of promotional nights will accentuate the action-packed schedule, headlined by the re-

turn of Agriculture Night, SaddleUp Sunday and Circus Night.

Information on season ticket packages, box seating, and individual game tickets for the 2024 season is forthcoming. 2024 will mark Pulaski’s 58th season fielding teams in the Appalachian League. The Pulaski River Turtles enjoyed a successful 2021 campaign in the league’s first season of collegiate wood-bat play, compiling a regular-season record of 32-22 and earning the East Division championship. The Green-

eville Flyboys edged the River Turtles 9-8 to earn the 2021 Appalachian League championship. The River Turtles followed up their maiden season with a solid second-place finish in the East Division in 2022. Pulaski has an overall record of 71-80 entering its fourth season of collegiate wood-bat play.

The River Turtles will be home against Bluefield June 7-9, and Kingsport will visit June 18-19.

Greeneville will come to Pulaski

on June 20-21, and Johnson City visits June 25-26. Danville comes on June 29-30. The River Turtles will host Bristol July 2-3., and Burlington on July 6-7. Bristol returns on July 11-12 and TriState pays a visit July 13-14.

Elizabethton comes on July 1819, followed by a return of TriState July 29-31.

Calfee Park opened in 1935 and was renovated for the organization’s first season under the ownership of the Shelor Motor Mile in 2015.

$2.6 million in emergency funding awarded

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management announced the awarding of more than $2.6 million in grant funding for the Emergency Management Performance Grant Program. The EMPG program is a federally funded, state distributed, grant program. The grant focuses

on funding planning, operations, equipment acquisitions, trainings, exercises, and construction and renovation efforts at the local government level.

The EMPG program provides resources to assist local governments in preparing for all hazards.

Through the grant program, the Federal government provides coordination, guidance, and assistance to support a comprehensive emergency preparedness system.

Grant funding for the program is available to cities, counties and those towns recognized as emergen-

cy management jurisdictions under Title 44 of the Code of Virginia.

Bland County received a $7,500 allocation, while Bristol, Virginia, netted the second-highest amount in the region at $15,500. Carroll County, Grayson County and the city of Galax all received $7,500

each.

Pulaski County received the most funds in the region at $16,904. The city of Radford received $7,500, the same amount as Smyth County. Washington County received $9,015, and Wythe County netted $13,017.

Wildlife center takes in third bobcat kitten The Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center recently received its third Bobcat kitten of the year from near the Peaks of Otter in Bedford. After likely being struck by a car, we’re seeing great progress but our prognosis is still guarded.

A concerned citizen noticed this adorable kitten dragging herself along the side of the road and barely alive near the Peaks of Otter in Bedford. During

admission, we noticed that she had a concussion, se-

vere trauma to the face, and several broken teeth.

Given the injuries and location found it was clear she had been hit by a car. In addition to the significant trauma she was also very anemic and was unable to eat on her own for several days. However, after fluid therapy, oxygen treatment, and several life-saving medications she is doing much better! She has begun to growl at us, improving her motor/locomotion skills, and has a voracious appetite which are all indi-

cators that she is heading in the right direction. She’s still dealing with some of the lingering effects of the head trauma but that’s expected to resolve with time – when you only weigh a few pounds and get hit by a several thousand pound car it’s going to take a little while to heal. We hope that she’ll soon join our other 2 orphaned Bobcat kittens and overwinter with us until their release in the spring.

This will be a long and very expensive rehab and we are asking for donations to help with the cost of their care. We estimate the cost of food, veterinary care, enclosure maintenance, and staffing to care for all 3 Bobcats will be around $25,000 until their release in May.
