40 years ago, Beth Pendleton, John Ward, Judson Lambert, Linda Butt,Anne B. Crockett-Stark, Pat Thompson & John Dowd planned the very first Chautauqua Festival-In-The-Park. Without thousands of volunteers each year, this festival would not be possible. Thank you to current and past board members for their time and service on the WytheArts Council. They spend all year dedicating their time to continue to make this tradition free for our community.
Chautauqua: (pronounced sha tauk’ wa) of Seneca Indian origin; a name of a place, variously represented as titles in early (chiefly French) writings and maps… literal meaning “one has take out fish there…” … which may account for the relationship to Lake Chautauqua in southwestern New York. Chautauqua, NY Is the site of the educational assembly started in 1874 and is still in existence today. In the late 19th century, the Chautauqua movement became a popular form of adult education and entertainment in the United States. Using noted lyceum speakers (such as Teddy Roosevelt and William Jennings Bryan) and local talent, the movement literally spread throughout the country, traveling in caravans and setting up their tent performances in towns with primary access to the railroad. In the 1920’s; Wytheville, VA was a stop on the Chautauqua circuit, reportedly known as the “Redpath Circuit” which ran perpendicular to the “White & Meyer Circuit” that crossed the rural Midwestern United States, where Chautauqua was particularly popular. The Chautauqua lectures, musical features, dramatic arts and children’s activities rose in popularity during the 1920’s, followed by its demise, brought on by the Great Depression and the rise of the film industry. In 1985, the Chautauqua Festival was rejuvenated in the southwest VA community of Wytheville, and has been a source of entertainment, enjoyment and education again over the past thirty-nine years.

Chris Hallgren:
Agraduate of Concord University with a major inArt, she has embarked on a remarkable journey that has brought her back to her true passion after overcoming a significant challenge. In her mid-40s, Christina encountered a formidable obstacle as eye problems began to limit her ability to perceive fine details. Multiple West Virginia optometrists delivered the disheartening news that she had macular degeneration, a condition with no known treatment. Fast-forward several years, and a move to SW Virginia brought a glimmer of hope.A new diagnosis revealed that Christina did not have macular degeneration after all, but rather a distant cousin to the condition. The root of her visual impairment lay in overripe cataracts, a condition that was highly treatable. After the successful surgeries, Christina‘s eyesight improved dramatically, surpassing the clarity and precision she had experienced in decades. With a newfound lease on life and an unwavering dedication to her craft, Christina is now fully embracing her artistic journey in the heart of picturesque Virginia mountains.

There are many bands or groups today yet few that are considered a musical institution. The Embers have solidified their position as a thriving musical entity, leaving their mark on listeners for decades. The Embers boast numerous albums and single releases that span decades, and all the crazes continue to exhibit top-quality showmanship, musicianship, and professionalism. Having been inducted into the South Carolina Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame, The Embers are honored to carry the moniker of North Carolina’s Official Ambassadors of Music. The Embers are widely considered a musical MARVEL and have laid the groundwork for what has become known as ‘Beach Music’ in the Carolinas, Virginias, the Gulf Coast region of North America, and every beach in between. They are a true musical tradition that many Americans have listened to from childhood to adulthood. The Embers consider the genre of Beach Music as “music with a memory” and have been creating lasting memories since its inception in 1958. Simply put, it is Heart and Soul, Rhythm and Blues, and Feel Good Music.

Not to risk inadvertent oversights, the Wythe Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks to all who contributed toward the success of the Chautauqua Festival-in-the-Park. We know this festival would not be possible without countless volunteer hours. It is estimated that approximately 1,000 volunteers support the activities leading up to and carried throughout the festival.
Thanks, as well, are due for the unending gifts-in-kind. These types of gifts are abundant in quantity, invaluable in quality, and often so behind-the-scenes that they can be overlooked. They never seem to be motivated by recognition, yet without them, the show could never go on! Finally we dedicate this endeavor to our local and visiting festival-goers. Enjoy the 40th annual Chautauqua Festival!
