— BLESSED DISAPPOINTMENTS — “The disappointments of life will appear as blessings in disguise,” Ellen G. White says in Ministry of Healing.

God, I don’t see how you’re going to turn this disappointment into a blessing, I prayed four years ago, claiming this promise with a tear-stained face.

But it was that very setback that began one of the most exciting chapters of my life and eventually brought me to the Southwestern Union. Over and over again, I have reaped blessings that would not have been mine had it not been for that providential disappointment.

Talk to anyone long enough, and you’ll learn about frustration and discouragement they’ve faced in life. But those who give their disappointments to Jesus will find that—whether in this life or the next—those letdowns will be transformed into treasured milestones.

In this issue you’ll read about how a judge found her calling after persistent challenges in advancing her career. (See page 4.) You’ll learn how one conference president found the path God planned through a call he didn’t want to accept (See page 18.) and how our new union president found an unexpected path after not receiving a call. (See page 6.)

Are you in a season of disappointment right now? It’s my prayer that you’ll find inspiration within these pages to carry you through your season of waiting until God transforms your disappointment into a testimony.

Together in Mission: Answering the Call The mission of the Southwestern Union has never been more urgent, as the world needs our message of hope.

This is the hour to unite and to boldly declare that Jesus is coming soon.

We can find inspiration for our mission in the book of Acts, which records the most explosive mission movement in history. This mission began when 120 ordinary believers gathered in an upper room and waited on God together. Scan Acts, chapters 2–5, and the word "together" leaps off the page. They were together in one place.

They believed together. They raised their voices together in prayer. They met together. Unity was not incidental to their mission—it was their mission.

And from that togetherness, the Gospel crossed every boundary on earth and reached people who had never heard the name of Jesus.

That same principle is the foundation for our work in the Southwestern Union. "Together in Mission" is more than a theme for the coming quinquennium—it’s a truth we must live.

Evangelism grows when our churches evangelize as one body. Education transforms when our schools and congregations work in partnership.

Communication amplifies when every voice is pulling in the same direction.

Leadership multiplies when we prepare

the next generation. Discipleship deepens when no one in our churches is walking alone. We either rise together, or we stall in isolation.

The work ahead of us is far too great for human effort alone. The territory we cover, the diversity of our congregations, the spiritual battle raging in our communities—these demand more than any leader, any budget or any strategy can provide. But when the Holy Spirit comes upon a surrendered, unified people, they receive power— the supernatural capacity to do what is impossible in their own strength.

The disciples who turned the world upside down were not impressive by any human measure. They were ordinary people made extraordinary by the Spirit of the living God. So are we.

But that power flows through unity.

Before Pentecost came, those 120 believers became as one—praying through differences, healing relational wounds, surrendering personal agendas. They were bound together by a shared devotion to Christ and urgency about His mission. That same devotion is what will propel us forward. When the people of God are knit together by prayer and anchored in His Word, there is nothing the Holy Spirit cannot accomplish through them.

So here is my challenge to you: Stop

waiting for the right moment. This is the moment. Plant the church that has been in your heart. Make the evangelistic call you have been putting off.

Invest in the young person sitting in your pew. Heal the relationship that has been broken. Open your mouth and declare, without apology, that Jesus is coming soon—because He is.

The Southwestern Union is alive with possibility. The promise of Acts 1:8 belongs to us as surely as it belonged to those first disciples. Let us receive it, walk in it, and together—boldly, faithfully, urgently—proclaim that the King is coming. a

A Calling to

Compassionate Justice

From missed opportunities to unexpected provision, one Dallas Project Church member sees God’s hand guiding her career.

“The Court imposes the maximum sentence.” The Dallas County judge who spoke was known for harsh sentences.

Carrie Singleton steadied herself.

She believed people should answer for their actions, but should also be seen as more than their mistakes. “Respectfully, Judge,” she said, “is there any reason you’re suggesting the maximum time for my client?”

“He needs treatment,” the judge responded. But her client didn’t want to do treatment again. Singleton had negotiated to switch his penalty from a treatment program to a prison sentence. Now, the judge was imposing a harsher sentence than anticipated.

“Judge,” Singleton persisted, “does that mean you are not considering the full penalty range for my client, including the treatment and probation he’s already done?” The courtroom grew quieter, and several people looked up.

“No,” the judge said. “If he wants time, he’s going to get the max.”

Singleton had witnessed how a judge who looked beyond a criminal record could alter the trajectory of a person’s life, but now she was in a disagreement with the opposite kind of judge. Regardless, she was going to advocate for her client, which meant presenting her client’s plea to a different judge. That complicated matters.

Singleton left the courtroom with a plan. She would challenge this judge with a motion of recusal. However, as an assistant public defender, her court assignments were at the mercy of the presiding judges, and she needed her manager to be aware of the situation.

career within Dallas County, pursuing leadership opportunities and training while handling the demanding work of criminal defense. She believed deeply in public service and hoped to grow into greater responsibility.

Repeatedly, Singleton was passed over by candidates with equal experience, and in some cases, with less training than her. Each rejection sharpened the realization that despite all her effort, the leadership door she wanted to walk through never fully opened.

THE PROMOTION THAT NEVER CAME

Singleton tapped on her manager's door. “Chief, I wanted to run this by you,” Singleton started. She explained what had happened and what she planned to do.

“I support your thought process on this,” the chief public defender said.

Singleton filled out the paperwork and prayed, “Lord, let Your will be done. If I am going to be reassigned, reassign me. Thank you for your hand in this, whatever the outcome.” Her motion was granted.

Singleton continued building her

Sitting across from her manager, Singleton listened to another rejection.

“Are you okay?” her manager asked.

“I’m fine,” Singleton replied. “I need to start planning my exit strategy.”

Singleton became intentional about saving money. Six months later, she gave notice that she would be quitting so she could campaign to be a judge.

Leaving her position to campaign full time brought financial uncertainty, but shortly after giving notice, Singleton received an unexpected call that significantly reduced her insurance costs.

Encouraged, Singleton threw herself into campaigning. She spent months moving from community events to neighborhood canvassing, often returning home exhausted before

preparing for the next day’s schedule.

Some days were especially difficult.

On one day, Singleton sat for three separate interviews across the city before returning to campaign responsibilities that evening. Campaigning rarely offered proof that the work was paying off. Still, Singleton remained committed to seeing it through.

Prayer continued to be part of Singleton’s daily rhythm. She prayed before interviews, while traveling across the city and during moments of exhaustion and uncertainty.

THE CHECK SHE NEVER EXPECTED

With only one week left, Singleton’s campaign manager went over some numbers. “I don’t like how close these numbers are to my opponent’s,” Singleton said, “There’s over 40 percent of voters that say they’re still undecided. What can we do?”

“It would be worth it to run a personal text message to the targeted audience,” her campaign manager suggested. “To run the text will be $2,500.”

Singleton frowned. Her campaign fund was nearly depleted. Not willing to leave anything on the table, Singleton decided to pay for the service out of her own pocket.

She tried sending the money to her campaign manager through a payment

app. Despite it being the way she’d made previous payments, this payment wouldn't go through. Then she decided to try a credit card, but that payment was rejected as well.

“Can I give you a check when I see you on Friday?” Singleton asked her campaign manager. He agreed and sent out the campaign text.

That same day, Singleton received a call indicating a family friend had sent a check that hadn't been cashed.

Singleton was surprised. Most donations came in electronically rather than through the mail, and it had been awhile since she'd received any donations.

“Alright,” Singleton acknowledged, “I’ll go to the post office now.”

Sorting through the stack of mail, she discovered that check for exactly $2,500. Singleton stared at it in silence for a moment, then laughed in disbelief. “Thank you, God!” she shouted.

THE RESULTS COME IN

On election day, Singleton sat in front of the computer, surrounded by her friends and family, eating haystacks and peach cobbler. She refreshed the election results webpage, but the results hadn't been posted yet. The race between her and her opponent was close.

Every refresh brought either nervous silence or bursts of hopeful chatter.

Singleton had never presumed victory, but she had woken up with a sense of peace that morning, moving through the day with unusual calm. Now, with the time drawing near, she remained composed and confident.

Unbeknownst to the room, the last of the precincts reported their results.

Singleton waited for the webpage to load when her phone buzzed with a message from her campaign manager that said, “Congratulations, Judge!”

Then her cousin came bounding down the stairs, shouting, “Results are out!” The results were displayed for everyone to see, and the room erupted in cheers.

Singleton still thinks about the defendants who enter court carrying broken histories. As a judge, she hopes every person who stands before her will receive full consideration under the law, not judgment based solely on one of the worst moments of their life.

“I want to see people as individuals and change their lives in a positive way,” Singleton said. She prays for wisdom, fairness and discernment. Years earlier, she stood in a courtroom advocating for fairness from the defense table. Now she takes that same conviction to the bench. a JULY | AUGUST 2026

CHAPTER From Service Calls to a Higher Calling

T

his is not about you. These were the words impressed upon Elton DeMoraes’ mind as he stood in the foyer of the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church, his legs feeling numb, his mind spinning as he tried to think of a response to the question North American Division President Alex Bryant had just asked.

“I think this will be a very easy session,” DeMoraes had told his wife, Alessandra, that morning. “I believe by 2 or 3 p.m. we’ll be done.” Together they planned a late lunch date and an afternoon of yardwork.

Instead, at 2:15 p.m., DeMoraes was being asked to make a life-changing decision. “Elder,” he said. “I need to process this. I don’t even know what to say.”

BRIDGE OF DECISION Growing up in Brazil, church was always an important part of DeMoraes’ life. He sang in the choir, served as a youth elder and even preached. No wonder that by the age of 12 the boy who walked through the church doors at least four times a week felt called to ministry.

But his vision for the future changed when he began serving as an apprentice for Whirlpool at the age of 14. He

discovered that he enjoyed making good money, and the calling he had felt started to fizzle.

By 17 he was working as a Whirlpool technician and trying to decide what direction college would take him. Should he be a pastor as he had dreamed about earlier or a lawyer to secure a good income?

Not old enough for a Brazilian driver’s license, DeMoraes was being transported from job to job by a driver. Crossing a bridge in São Paulo, DeMoraes looked out over a sea of vehicles. Cars, trucks and buses filled the city streets with sounds of honking. Everywhere, people were bustling about.

“I did not call you to make money,” he heard. “I called you to win souls. And look at the harvest. It’s ready, and I need you.”

“What did you say?” DeMoraes asked his driver.

“Oh, I didn’t say anything.”

Half crying, half laughing, DeMoraes directed his driver to take him back to the office.

“But we have a full list of calls…” his driver protested.

DeMoraes was insistent. Returning to the office, he walked in and resigned. The very next day he applied to the Adventist University Center of São Paulo.

REPAIR AND REDEMPTION In 1994, when DeMoraes arrived at the university, which had been built on a former orange farm, the rural community

that surrounded the campus didn’t have a technician to fix their appliances. DeMoraes became the local repairman, paying his way through college.

But his repair skills brought in more than just money.

During his junior year, while spending six months serving as a student Bible worker in conjunction with an evangelistic campaign, DeMoraes noticed a gentleman in his backyard trying to fix his washing machine. On previous occasions when DeMoraes had tried to approach the man, the gentleman had replied with “I’m busy” or “whatever.”

This time, when DeMoraes stopped, asking, “Having fun with that?” the man engaged in conversation.

“I’m trying,” the gentleman said, “but it’s giving me a hard time, and I don’t have the money to fix it.”

“Can I take a look?” DeMoraes asked.

Soon the two were working side by side. As they worked, they chatted, getting to know each other. The next day when DeMoraes came by, the man was waiting for him with an eager grin, announcing joyfully that the washing machine was working.

Five months later, DeMoraes baptized his new friend, a man who had previously refused to talk to him.

SEEDS IN HOUSTON That summer DeMoraes travelled to Houston to spend a couple months visiting his parents, who were now members of the Houston Central Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church.

“Hey, we’re going to have an evangelistic campaign here,” the church pastor mentioned to DeMoraes. “Do you want to be our Bible worker for two months?”

“I don’t speak Spanish,” DeMoraes replied, assuming his limited language skills would unqualify him for the role.

The pastor shrugged. “Portuguese is close enough.”

The unexpected summer job put $2,000 into DeMoraes’ pocket, and,

more importantly, helped bring 35 people to the baptismal tank.

Returning to the university for his senior year, DeMoraes felt confident he would receive a call after graduation. In addition to his Bible worker

experience, he had spent eight school breaks working as a colporter. He had also been president of his class for three years and president of the student association his senior year. And his GPA was pretty impressive too.

After graduation, DeMoraes got married and was ready to start the next chapter of his life. But no calls came.

Not knowing what else to do, he returned to his former job as a Whirlpool technician, all the while questioning why he had sensed such a strong call to the ministry.

ONE-WAY TICKET For half a year, it appeared as though DeMoraes wouldn’t receive the opportunity to serve in the ministry. But after word got out at his parents' church that he had not succeeded in getting an appointment, he received an unexpected call to serve as that church’s associate pastor.

“I’m sending

you to Houston Central English.

“This is a joke, right?”

DeMoraes asked, reminding Holley that he didn’t speak English.

”

After his parents confirmed with the Texas Conference that DeMoraes’ call was legitimate, he and his wife sold nearly everything they had and travelled to the United States with two suitcases and $65.

Arriving at the conference office ready to onboard, DeMoraes was caught off-guard when the ministerial coordinator asked him for his work visa.

No one had said anything to him about needing a work visa.

“I don’t have one,” he said. “You guys told me to come. I’m here.”

“No, no, you cannot get it here,” the coordinator informed him. “You need to have it. Otherwise we cannot hire you.”

“But I’m here.” DeMoraes wasn’t sure what to do. “I sold everything.”

“I’m sorry,” the coordinator said.

“There’s nothing we can do.”

But the coordinator’s secretary, who was married to the conference treasurer, wasn’t going to give up as easily.

She took DeMoraes to her husband’s office to discuss the situation with him.

Two weeks before DeMoraes’ visa expired, the conference decided to sponsor him.

He wouldn’t be able to work for about a year until his work visa was processed, but he could serve in a volunteer capacity, and the conference would take care of his basic needs, including covering a $6,000 hospital bill they incurred when his wife got sick.

FINDING A NEW VOICE After working a couple years at the Houston Central Spanish Church, DeMoraes received a phone call from then-conference president Leighton Holley, speaking through a translator since DeMoraes didn’t know any English.

“I have a call for you," Holly said, "I want to send you to Houston Central.”

Advocating for Adventist Education Kisha Norris When Kisha Norris stepped into the Keene Seventh-day Adventist Church as a delegate for the 32nd Constituency Session of the Southwestern Union, she had no idea that before leaving, she’d have a new job title.

But by the end of the session, Norris had been elected as the union’s new vice president for education.

“This was not on my radar,” Norris said. “I did not pursue this role, but I am both humbled and honored by the confidence placed in me, and I recognize the responsibility that comes with serving in this position.”

Growing up, Norris didn’t see herself entering the education field at all. As the daughter of a deeply devoted Adventist educator, Norris watched her single mother wake up early to drive students to school, pack extra lunches and tutor children after class. She wanted nothing to do with the kind of sacrifices so many Adventist educators make. But after struggling through a college class taught by a brilliant professor whom she could not understand, then retaking the same class with a teacher who explained concepts clearly, Norris realized she wanted to become the kind of educator who helped every student succeed.

Norris began her career teaching at Burton Adventist Academy in Arlington, Tex. Most recently, she’s been serving as the vice president for education at the Texas Conference.

In her position with the Texas Conference, she was looking for ways she could support educational leaders throughout the union. “What can I do to help you guys?” she would ask her fellow superintendents whenever they gathered for meetings.

Not only does she see the importance of collaborating with educators, but she understands the value of working with pastors and other church leaders. “Adventist education does not work in a silo,” she explained.

As she steps into the role, Norris hopes to build strong partnerships across the union while advocating for Adventist education at every level.

She wants the education office to be visible and engaged: celebrating schools, supporting educators and helping church members see Adventist education as a vital part of the church’s mission.

“We in the Southwestern Union have a valuable resource in Adventist education,” Norris said. “And the only way it continues and grows and becomes a center of influence is if we take care of it, if we advocate for it, if we support it.”

DeMoraes started laughing. “Well, I’m already at Houston Central,” he said.

“No, no,” Holley clarified. “I’m sending you to Houston Central English.

Now the translator was laughing.

“This is a joke, right?” DeMoraes asked, reminding Holley that he didn’t speak English.

“Do you accept it?” Holley asked.

“Wow,” DeMoraes uttered his shock before verbalizing his agreement to the transition.

For his first meeting at the new church, DeMoraes sat for three hours not understanding a word that was

said until the final words of the closing prayer: “In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Lord, what am I doing here?

DeMoraes inquired. Why are you moving me here?

DeMoraes and his wife enrolled in English classes, where for nine months they attended four nights a week from 6-11:30 p.m.

When not in school or doing ministry, they watched sitcoms or American football to help immerse themselves in the English language and American culture.

One day, as they were driving and listening to an English radio station, they suddenly felt as though their ears had opened.

“Oh, I understand this!” DeMoraes said enthusiastically.

“Yeah, me too!” Alessandra observed.

For his first four sermons at the English church, DeMoraes used a translator, but by his fifth time at the pulpit, he was ready to try a memorized English sermon. “I don’t think I remembered what I was saying,” DeMoraes recalls, “But I memorized it word for word.”

DeMoraes could have said no to the call to an English church. He could have saved himself the hours upon hours of memorizing English sentences and the frustration of sitting in meetings that made no sense to him.

“But I felt I needed to do this,” he says. “I felt the Lord guiding this way, and, because of that, doors opened for me tremendously.”

SOUTHWESTERN STEWARD For a quarter of a century, DeMoraes ministered in the Southwestern Union. He pastored at several Texas churches before becoming a department leader and then later executive secretary at the Texas Conference and then vice president for ministries at the Southwestern Union. Five years ago, he was elected president of the Texas Conference.

Then in April, as he stood in the Keene church foyer allowing Bryant’s invitation to sink in, DeMoraes thought about the team he had built at the Texas Conference. “We work through collaboration,” he says. “There’s a lot of synergy. And I’m thinking about my team, thinking about all the things we want to accomplish and the vision we put in place.”

But in that moment, he paused long enough to hear God’s voice: This is not about you. There is more work for us to do on a different level.

And so he agreed to lead the union through the next quinquennium.

“At the end of the day, the way I see it is that we’re just stewards,” says DeMoraes. “We are stewards of the calling He has given us, and we want to do it in the most faithful way possible.” a

LOOKING FORWARD

Here’s what returning members of Southwestern Union’s leadership team

are planning for the next quinquennium.

STEPHEN BROOKS Stephen Brooks, Southwestern Union executive secretary, is working with the local conferences to provide additional support for church clerks as they help churches maintain accurate membership records and reclaim inactive members. This support includes an upcoming clerk convention and piloting an “area clerk” initiative in the Arkansas-Louisiana Conference. In this initiative, experienced clerks will mentor church clerks within a designated region.

Brooks also plans to support local conferences in training and deploying more Bible workers to assist local churches and conferences. The union plans to expand training opportunities through a Bible worker retreat.

In addition, Brooks plans to expand the union’s public affairs and religious liberty (PARL) work by strengthening relationships with community leaders and elected officials in state capitals across the Southwestern Union territory.

JOHN PAGE Treasurer John Page’s vision for the next quinquennium is to ensure that the union’s entities have the resources needed to provide strong financial reporting and support sound decision-making. “I think we have a great future ahead of us,” Page said.

Page also emphasized the importance of stewardship education in supporting the church’s mission. “I think that we should continue to teach our members about giving and about how funding works within the Church,” he said.

Page says he feels confident about the future and the union’s ability to support conferences, churches and schools throughout the territory.

TONY ANOBILE Tony Anobile, now serving as vice president for ministerial and multicultural ministries, will continue his work in ministerial leadership while also helping conferences navigate our growing cultural diversity.

A certified cultural intelligence trainer, Anobile has served as the North American Division vice president for multilingual ministries. He believes the Church must learn to recognize and value the diverse cultures and perspectives that shape its congregations while adapting to changing demographics and ministry needs.

“I’m looking forward to helping conferences understand the importance of cultural diversity,” Anobile said.

Along with his new multicultural ministries responsibilities, Anobile will continue supporting conferences, pastors and ministry leaders throughout the union. He is looking ahead to the next union-wide ministerial convention in 2029.

BO JUST Bo Just, Southwestern Union undertreasurer, hopes to strengthen long-term financial support for ministry and education through continued growth of the union’s educational endowment fund and stronger trust services ministries.

A previous goal of reaching $5 million in the educational endowment fund has already been surpassed, with the fund now approaching $8 million. Just said he would like to see that number grow to $10 million.

Distributions from the educational endowment will total $354,027 for the 2026-2027 school year. “The more that we can provide,” Just said, “the more students can get Christian education.”

Just hopes to increase awareness of planned giving opportunities available to church members. “The potential for gifts are still out there,” he said.

Do your words and actions draw your family closer to Him? Women, do you support and uplift your husband? Do you cultivate an atmosphere of peace and joy?

Children, do you respect your parents and treat your siblings with kindness.

Families, do you honor one another?

Witness doesn’t begin on a stage or in a distant mission field. It begins much closer to home.

In Acts 1:8, Jesus outlines both the power and the pathway for His followers. In the last issue of the Record, I explored the dynamic power of the Holy Spirit and what becomes visible in a true witness. Three qualities stand out: 1. A true witness knows what they say is true.

2. A true witness uses deeds as well as words.

3. The evidence of a true witness is that the power of the Holy Spirit compels them to share the Gospel.

Jesus then names four places where His Spirit-filled followers are called to testify: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth.

Many interpret these locations in different ways. Let me share how I understand them, beginning with Jerusalem. I believe Jerusalem represents the home. One of the two institutions we have to this day that was implemented in the Garden of Eden is family,

beginning with marriage. The other, of course, is the Sabbath. God intended for families to live in genuine happiness and to pass on a knowledge of His love to future generations. The home was and remains a priority for God. Societies rise or fall on the strength of the family unit.

How Schools Prepare Pupils for Life

By Carol Campbell When parents think about their child’s education, they often think about grades and academic progress.

But just as important are the skills students develop along the way—how they think, solve problems and apply what they learn in real life.

That kind of learning can be seen in a high school environmental science class, where students are asked to investigate water quality in their local community.

Instead of just memorizing facts about pollution, students collect water samples from nearby sources, analyze data, compare results to environmental standards, identify possible causes of pollution and propose evidence-based solutions.

Through experiences like this, students develop critical thinking skills as they evaluate real-world data, make connections and defend their conclusions in presentations to classmates or even local officials.

This approach to learning reflects a broader shift in education. We live in a far more complex world today than in years past. As a result, success in school is now defined more broadly than just academic knowledge; it also involves skills that help students apply what they learn beyond the classroom.

This shift is why the Southwestern Union Office of Education has promoted Portrait of a Graduate competencies.

The portrait defines skills, dispositions and mindsets that students need for academic success as well as for college, careers and life. These attributes include communicating, critical thinking and collaborating.

The office of education brought together a group of educators, community leaders and family representatives a few years ago to develop a Portrait of a Graduate for Adventist schools. In the process, a set of seven competencies was identified that matter for success in school as well as for life beyond the classroom.

It was critical that the competencies be clear to students, families and staff. They also had to be measurable so educators would be able to see, hear or assess them over time. Finally, the competencies needed to connect to authentic learning experiences.

These are the seven competencies that were chosen for Seventh-day Adventist schools in the Southwestern Union.

As we grow older, many of us think about how to stay sharp, independent and connected to the life we love. While there’s no single solution, one simple habit may make a meaningful difference: moving more throughout the day.

According to new research conducted by the AdventHealth Research Institute, older adults who engage in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity—such as brisk walking, cycling or jogging—tend to have brains that appear younger than their actual age.

Researchers found that time spent in higher-intensity movement stood out among daily habits.

Even when compared with sleep, light activity or time spent sitting, moderate-to-vigorous activity was most closely linked to healthier brain structure in later years. In other words, not all movement affects the brain in the same way—adding moments of more active movement may offer unique benefits.

“Looking at the whole day helps us better understand how different behaviors work together,” said Audrey M. Collins, lead author and researcher at the AdventHealth Research Institute. “What stood out most was the unique role that moderate-to-vigorous physical activity may play in supporting brain health later in life.”

For many people, the idea of “higher-intensity” activity

can feel intimidating. But it doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or long hours at the gym. A brisk walk that slightly raises your heart rate, a bike ride around the neighborhood or even active household tasks can fall into this category. The goal is simply to move with a bit more purpose.

The encouraging news is that small changes can add up. “Our findings suggest that adding more time in activities like brisk walking or cycling may benefit the brain,” said senior author Kirk I. Erickson “Small, consistent steps, like choosing a faster-paced walk or finding an activity you enjoy, can be meaningful ways to care for your brain and your overall health.”

While researchers are continuing to study how movement affects the brain over time, it’s clear that staying active is one practical way to support both your physical health and mental sharpness as you age. a

Scripture Beyond Simulation

By Endi Stojanovic, Assistant Professor, Department of Religion, Southwestern Adventist University A recent conversation on campus got me thinking about the difference between being trained and being ready.

Kerrie Kimbrow, chair of Southwestern Adventist University’s nursing department, was telling me about the new virtual reality headsets they have received to help train future nurses.

These headsets place students in simulated medical environments, helping them apply classroom theory in practice.

Virtual reality is increasingly being used in healthcare training and has proven effective in helping professionals bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. The programs are designed to place the students in various high-stress situations to see how effective they are in implementing correct procedures and treatments. Unlike real life, mistakes in the virtual program carry no real risk, allowing students to learn without putting lives in danger.

But if health professionals treated real patients after training only in virtual reality, it would not inspire much confidence. We all instinctively understand that there’s a difference between knowledge and practice. Some skills cannot be learned any other way but to actually put them into practice, not in the virtual world, but in reality. That’s why I’m glad our nursing department pairs virtual reality training with an extensive clinical program, where students gain experience in real hospitals with real patients.

That same principle applies to our spiritual lives.

Scripture was given to be a light to our paths. Throughout Scripture it’s the wise who put biblical knowledge into practice.

Many Christians are convinced, at least intellectually, that what Scripture

reveals is good. Yet when it comes to putting those truths into practice, we often fall short. Some Christians live under the illusion—virtual reality, if you will—that as long as they know the right things and intellectually agree with them, they are automatically in a right relationship with God. But Scripture consistently points beyond knowledge alone to a lived, active faith. Only those who have a daily, experiential walk with Christ, attempting to put Scripture into practice, are recognized as faithful.

We will not always succeed in doing what is right, and even our best efforts may fall short. What matters is continuing the journey.

We should not let moments of failure or discouragement overwhelm us and keep us from reaching the promised blessings, especially when the Bible portrays God as our best friend who is full of compassion, patience, mercy and love. (See Lamentations 3:22.) With God as our loving father and a “can-do” attitude in us, anything is possible. (See Luke 1:37.)

Rather, at times, we must grapple with difficult passages and stories and seek to fit them within a model that considers the whole of Scripture. This is why continual study is invaluable.

The more we understand, the closer we align ourselves with the biblical worldview. And the more we understand, the better we implement what we learn, the more joy, peace and happiness will fill our lives.

Southwestern Union Superintendents Gather for Retreat ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Superintendents gathered May 11–14 for a retreat designed to strengthen relationships, reflect on priorities and make plans.

These educational leaders, serving across multiple conferences, recognize the value of collaboration, trust and shared vision in advancing the mission of Adventist education.

A highlight of the retreat included time spent exploring the rich culture and history of Santa Fe. Participants also visited Sandia View Academy, learning more about the school’s programs, ministry and approach to serving students within its community.

Lee-Roy Chacon, president of the Texico Conference, shared perspectives on the growth, opportunities and ongoing work of the Church within the conference. The conversation highlighted both the blessings and unique needs of serving a geographically expansive field.

Meetings focused on educational leadership and planning. Discussions included a review of academy curriculum initiatives, priorities for the upcoming school year, policy updates and collaborative planning efforts designed to strengthen educational programs throughout the union.

The group also continued preparations for the upcoming unionwide educators convention scheduled for August, considering ways to support, encourage and equip educators.

The mission of Adventist education remains rooted in preparing young people not only for academic success, but for lives of service, purpose and a lasting relationship with Christ. As superintendents reviewed initiatives and planned for the future, there was a collective commitment to ensuring that Adventist schools continue to nurture faith, character and excellence in ways that impact students for eternity.

The retreat served as a reminder that effective leadership is strengthened through relationships, thoughtful planning and a shared commitment to the mission. As superintendents returned to their respective conferences, they did so with renewed collaboration, clearer direction and a continued dedication to serving students, educators and school communities.

Houston Basketball League Builds Faith and Fellowship

MISSOURI CITY, TEX. – Sneakers squeaked across the gym floor as young people from throughout the Houston area gathered for a thriving basketball ministry.

For two seasons, the Houston Area Basketball League has united churches, encouraged youth involvement and promoted spiritual growth.

The league officially launched in February 2025 with the goal of connecting youth and young adults from both the Southwest Region Conference and the

Texas Conference. The purpose was to promote fellowship, spiritual growth and healthy relationships on and off the court.

Teams compete over a 10-week season that concludes with exciting playoff games and championship matchups.

Before every game, players gather for prayer and devotional thoughts.

Families packed the gyms, friendships were formed and many participants became more active in church. Some players even decided to be baptized.

Helvis Moody, young adult and youth ministries director at the Southwestern Union, played a key role in helping organizers connect with churches throughout the Houston area.

Additional support was provided by Seventh-day Adventist pastors Federico Revollo, Nahum Mendez, Rubi

Pimentel and John T. Boston II, as well as Jason North, secretary of the Southwest Region Conference, and Westley McNorton, youth director of the Southwest Region Conference.

From only a handful of teams, the league has expanded across 10 churches throughout the Houston and Baytown areas, with plans already underway for an even larger third season in 2027. The success of the basketball league also inspired the creation of a volleyball league.

The ministry has become a powerful example of how faith, fellowship and teamwork can inspire the next generation, strengthen church communities and remind others that small visions can grow into life-changing ministries.

Students Learn Evangelism Through Practice

HOUSTON – On a Wednesday evening at the Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church in Houston, guests filtered through the sanctuary doors as theology students from Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) greeted attendees, handed out materials and distributed registration cards. In the fellowship hall, students helped pack purple gift bags and prepare food that would be served after the meeting.

These students were participating in the Southwestern Union’s annual Field School of Evangelism, a required summer course for theology juniors at SWAU. From May 15 through June 20, the program combined classroom instruction, hands-on ministry experience and the opportunity for students to conduct their own evangelistic series in Austin-area churches.

“The hope is that not only will they learn some public evangelistic skills, but also they will have an experience that will leave an indelible mark where they will always have that desire to win souls,” said Stephen Brooks, Southwestern Union executive secretary.

Mornings were spent in class with Brooks, afternoons were dedicated to sermon preparation and evenings were

spent assisting with the nightly revival meetings. Throughout the series, students rotated through responsibilities, including audiovisual support, children’s programming and transporting attendees to and from meetings.

In addition to providing classroom instruction and modeling evangelistic ministry through the nightly meetings, the Southwestern Union also helped cover tuition, hotel costs, transportation and daily stipends for students participating in the field school.

“We try to make it as stress free as possible for them,” Brooks said.

For field school participant Max Gucake, the experience reshaped the way he thought about ministry, challenging him to simplify his approach, focus more intentionally on people and slow down enough to give others his full attention rather than immediately trying to fix their problems.

“Sometimes people just want to offload,” Gucake said. “I don’t have to fix it in that moment. I can just listen.”

Participant Claudette Henry-Davis described Brooks’ approach as “the Jesus method,” saying his style of evangelism was simple enough “that even the smallest child can grasp.”

Students also said they were struck by the community’s response to the meetings. Attendance grew throughout the week, surprising organizers who had prepared for smaller crowds.

“I’ve never seen visitors come to an evangelistic series in droves,” Henry-Davis said. “People are hungry for the message.”

Gucake, who helped transport attendees to and from the meetings, said the response became visible almost immediately. “It’s definitely been a blessing,” he said. “A lot of people showed up.”

Students later moved from observing ministry to leading it themselves as they conducted their own meetings in local churches.

Brooks said the goal was not only for students to learn ministry skills, but to experience firsthand what it means to lead others to Christ.

“We want the meetings to be real evangelistic meetings,” he said, “to give these students an opportunity to win souls.”

Nelu Nedelea Named SWAU’s 27th President

KEENE, TEX. – Nelu Nedelea will become Southwestern Adventist University’s (SWAU) newest president on July 15.

Nedelea comes to SWAU from Mercy, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the United States, where he served as vice president of mission and ministry.

“My family and I are excited to join a community committed to developing students not only for successful careers, but also for lives of purpose, leadership and meaningful impact,” said Nedelea.“I believe this is a moment to build bridges between faith, innovation, academic excellence and service.”

“Dr. Nedelea’s deep commitment to mission, his proven leadership across complex organizations and his heart

for forming the next generation made him the ideal candidate for the role of president,” said Elton DeMoraes, chair of the Southwestern Adventist University Board and president of the Southwestern Union. “We thank God for His leadership in the selection process, and we know the university is in good hands, because it’s in God’s hands.”

The presidential search committee engaged FaithSearch Partners to assist in narrowing the field of qualified Seventh-day Adventist candidates to those who met the key skills and characteristics desired in the university’s next president. Those qualifications included strategic leadership, mission integration, organizational transformation and faith-informed leadership.

The interview process included panel and individual interviews as well as meetings with faculty, staff and students.

“Dr. Nedelea brings exactly what we were looking for: a leader who has integrated mission and values at scale and who leads from his faith,” said John Page, Southwestern Union treasurer and chair of the search committee.

Nedelea earned a doctorate in Global Leadership and Change from

Pepperdine University in 2024, a Master of Business Administration in health care management from La Sierra University in 2018 and a Master of Science in chaplaincy from Loma Linda University in 2016.

An ordained minister, Nedelea began his career pastoring in Romania and Canada.He later served as director of mission integration and spiritual care for Adventist Health in Bakersfield, St. Helena and Glendale, Calif., before joining Mercy in 2022.

Nedelea has served as a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator and guest lecturer and has contributed scholarly work on organizational resilience, leadership development and inclusion. He is fluent in Romanian and conversational in Spanish.

“Southwestern Adventist University is entering a season of great opportunity, and I am confident that God has prepared Dr. Nedelea for this moment,” said DeMoraes. “His love for students, his devotion to the mission of Adventist education and his servant’s heart will be a blessing to this campus and to the entire Southwestern Union family.”

Ismael Castillo Elected Texas Conference President ALVARADO, TEX. – Ismael A. Castillo has been elected president of the Texas Conference, bringing nearly 30 years of ministry experience and a strong commitment to service, evangelism and church growth.

Following God’s leading wasn’t always easy for Castillo. The son and grandson of pastors, he graduated from academy wanting to be “anything but a pastor,” considering careers in medicine or engineering instead.

Though he eventually decided to study theology at Montemorelos University, he envisioned himself teaching rather than pastoring. But after

graduation, he received a call to pastor a church in central Mexico.

“I was going to reject the call,” Castillo said, “but my father sat me down and reasoned with me.”

Years later, Castillo now sees that experience as part of learning to recognize God’s peace as confirmation that he is on the right path, a perspective he carries into his new role at the Texas Conference.

“Every decision I’ve made in my life,” he said, “I expect that peace as a reassurance of following God’s leading.”

Arkansas-Louisiana Conference

Becoming Like Our Master Teacher One of my favorite discipleship passages is Luke 6:40, which reminds us that the goal of Christian discipleship is to reflect the character of our Master. We’ll never surpass Him, but by His grace we can become like Him. Transformation happens through the renewing power of God’s Word. Paul affirms this in Romans 12:2: “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

God’s will is that we be transformed, and He accomplishes this work in us through the Holy Spirit.

Ellen G. White describes this process in Maranatha: “The Christian’s life is not a modification or improvement of the old, but a transformation of nature. … This change can be brought about only by the effectual working of the Holy Spirit.” This is the first goal of discipleship—true transformation.

The second goal is to be a continual learner. True disciples seek to grow in their knowledge of Christ and desire to live in a way that honors Him, reflecting His life in everyday conduct.

The third goal is reproduction. As we are transformed and grow in Christ, we naturally share His teachings with others. Disciples make more disciples.

This is the commission Jesus left with His followers: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,” Matthew 28:19.

The true evidence of discipleship is love. Jesus Himself declared, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another,” John 13:35. Love is the unmistakable mark of a life transformed by Christ.

When the Holy Spirit reshapes our character, love becomes visible in our attitudes, our words and our actions. Love is demonstrated through patience with those who frustrate us, compassion for those who are hurting, forgiveness toward those who have wronged us and generosity toward those in need. Love is not merely an emotion—it is a daily choice to reflect the heart of Jesus.

When we love one another with this Christ-centered love, the world sees something different, something divine, something unmistakably connected to the Master Teacher.

And in that love, our discipleship becomes undeniable.

Here are some practical steps that can help us in our discipleship growth: Abide daily in God’s Word and prayer. As we behold Christ, we are changed into His likeness.

Invite the Holy Spirit to shape your character. True transformation is not self-improvement—it’s surrender.

Walk in obedience to what you learn. Growth happens when we apply God’s Word in our relationships, decisions and habits.

Stay connected to a community of believers. Discipleship is strengthened in fellowship.

Share Christ intentionally. As we mature, we naturally begin to reproduce the life of Christ in others.

As we follow these steps, may we grow to reflect the heart of Jesus.

Adventist Christian Fellowship Hosts Spring Retreat

JEFFERSON, TEX. – The Arkansas-Louisiana Conference brought together about 40 students from various Adventist Christian Fellowship (ACF) chapters— including Louisiana State University (LSU), Southern University, Nicholls State University, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Grambling State University—for a spring retreat over Easter weekend. Students traveled to Jefferson Christian Academy (JCA), where they camped together. Including JCA students, total attendance exceeded 65.

The ACF chapters had gathered last year in Houston for FUSE 2.0, where each chapter participated in a Shark Tank-style event to receive funding for local initiatives. Naomi Green of LSU secured funding for what expanded from an ACF-LSU camping retreat into a Louisiana-wide chapter event.

Organizers faced challenges finding a campsite with lodging for a large group in April before connecting with Jefferson Christian Academy, which hosted the retreat.

Vice Principal Pila Telefoni and his wife, Litea, welcomed the group and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve. Litea Telefoni said, “It was a blessing to serve the ACF crew.

God is coming soon, and we are to join forces in finishing His work.”

We appreciated JCA for their warm welcome and hospitality.

The retreat opened Friday evening with vespers at a nearby church, featuring music and a message from Winn Morris of the Baton Rouge Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Sabbath morning included breakfast followed by Sabbath School and the worship service in the school gym.

Special music was provided by the JCA student choir and Amiyah Johnson of Louisiana State University, who sang “Flowers.”

Morris continued his message, focusing on being rooted in Christ and the importance of a committed relationship with Him. Rain persisted throughout much of Sabbath, but activities continued. After

lunch, some participants hiked despite the weather while others gathered indoors for board games.

The group reconvened for evening vespers, where pianist Austin Harris of Louisiana State University performed his original song, “Lord You Are.” Students from Nicholls State University representing Papua New Guinea also sang in their native language.

The evening devotional, led by Alex Menson-Johnson of Louisiana State University, focused on sanctification.

The day concluded with a sports night in the gym.

Sunday morning began with breakfast followed by a final devotional in the cafeteria. Participants shared highlights from the weekend, reflecting on the music, fellowship and activities.

Green said, “The Rooted and Risen retreat was impactful, insightful and so much fun. The amount of joy from that weekend was infectious.”

Treasurer Retires After 37 Years of Service

SHREVEPORT, LA. – Rodney Dyke retired from the Arkansas-Louisiana Conference on April 1.

He served the Seventh-day Adventist denomination for more than 37 years, with more than two decades at the Arkansas-Louisiana Conference.

Dyke began his career in 1987 as an accountant at Medical Center Hospital in Punta Gorda, Fla. In 1990, he accepted a call to serve as treasurer at Adventist University of Central Africa.

After one year, he returned to the United States to complete an MBA at Mississippi State University.

From 1992 to 1996, Dyke served as head of the business department at an Adventist seminary and college in Bangladesh. He returned to the United States in 1996 to serve as business manager at Battle Creek Academy and, in 1997, was called to the Texas Conference as an accountant. In 2005, he joined the Arkansas-Louisiana

Conference as associate treasurer and in 2011, he became treasurer/CFO, a role he held until his retirement.

Colleagues described Dyke as a faithful, dedicated servant. His wife, Peggy, has also served alongside him in the conference office in recent years.

Dyke often reflected on his years in mission service through his personal devotions and stories. In retirement, he plans to continue seeking opportunities to serve. He is currently assisting with the transition to a new treasurer and expects to take some time off in the near future.

OAA Students Serve on Belize Mission Trip GENTRY, ARK. – Students from Ozark Adventist Academy (OAA) traveled to Belize in February for a construction and community outreach mission trip.

The group of 35 students, along with eight staff members and parents, departed campus Feb. 12 and flew from Tulsa to Belize City. Their destination was Belize Adventist Junior College in Calcutta Village, Corozal District, where they worked to help build the second floor of a new nursing facility. The new facility is significant because Belize has only one other nursing school, limiting access to medical training and care.

Belize Adventist Junior College currently offers academic programs ranging from primary education to biology and information technology but doesn’t yet offer a nursing degree.

“This is going to change my life,” one local teenager told Travis Irish, OAA vice principal for academics and trip sponsor. “I will be able to become a nurse and help my people.”

When the group arrived, the first floor of the building was already complete and construction on the second

floor had begun. By the time they left on Feb. 23, the only parts of the structure that remained to be completed were the center supports and roof.

The experience also exposed OAA students to a different pace of life.

Much of the campus doesn’t have air conditioning, and water for showers comes from a well. Food options were limited, often consisting of roadside vendors. While mission trip participants helped with a children’s program at an Adventist elementary school, one young boy asked, “Is McDonald’s real?” The experience helped students gain perspective and appreciation.

Construction work required significant manual labor. Without heavy equipment, students passed concrete blocks hand to hand to the second

floor and hauled sand and rock using ropes. Despite the challenges, participants said the work was rewarding.

Outside of the worksite, students experienced Belize’s culture and environment. They visited the island of Caye Caulker, explored local markets and went snorkeling along the reef.

The group also visited Mayan ruins and spent time in Corozal.

Annah Spencer, a senior at OAA, said, “The bathrooms may not have been perfect, and the showers may not have been warm, but I have never felt so full of purpose and fulfilled.”

Beth Zeiss, OAA principal, said she hopes experiences like this help students develop a lifelong commitment to serving others.

After Giving Rides, Driver Joins Church

HOUMA, LA. – What began as a simple act of kindness grew into a life-changing spiritual journey for a woman who is now joining the

Houma Seventh-day Adventist Church through baptism.

For more than a year, Kim regularly drove Sandy to church each Sabbath, but did not attend herself. Week after week, Kim dropped Sandy off, returning later to pick her up and take her home.

What appeared to be a favor became part of a larger spiritual journey.

In a phone call to Rodil Capobres, pastor of Houma church, Kim said, “Pastor Rodil, the Spirit is speaking to me. Why am I only bringing Sandy to church? Why am I not becoming part of the church myself? I want to know

more about Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath.” Following that conversation, Capobres and his wife, Sheila, began a series of Bible studies with Kim. Through these studies, Kim developed a deeper understanding of Scripture and decided to join the church.

Kim’s journey serves as a reminder that God can work through ordinary moments to draw people closer to Him.

Domestic Abuse Awareness Event Held in Hot Springs HOT SPRINGS, ARK. – A domestic abuse awareness weekend was conducted by the Arkansas-Louisiana (ARKLA) Conference Women’s Ministries Department, April 2–4. Held at the Hot Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church, the event brought together attendees from across the region for training, worship and discussion.

The event, titled “Turning Pain into Power,” served as the Arkansas regional meeting and the second of two transformative weekends held across the ARKLA territory this year.

Participants came seeking resources, support and education on recognizing and addressing domestic abuse.

The speaker for the event was Shannon Trecartin, chair of social work at Andrews University and a trained End It Now presenter from the North American Division. In her Friday evening message, “The God Who Sees: From Survival to Strength,” Trecartin drew from the story of Sarai and Hagar to emphasize God’s care for those experiencing hardship and the responsibility of believers to respond to abuse.

Sabbath services continued with worship and a sermon titled “A Church That Sees: From Pain to

Healing.” Referencing Galatians 6:2, Trecartin encouraged attendees to support those experiencing pain and to respond with compassion.

Following lunch, attendees participated in End It Now training sessions focused on recognizing signs of abuse, responding appropriately and supporting those affected. Men and women engaged in discussions and asked questions throughout the afternoon.

Participants traveled from across Arkansas, including Jonesboro, Fort Smith, Benton, Russellville and Little Rock, each leaving with knowledge, meaningful tools and reminders of encouragement. A particularly touching gift each participant received was a special glass keepsake, symbolizing

that no matter what one has endured, they are deeply loved by God. The Arkansas-Louisiana Conference Women’s Ministries team extends heartfelt gratitude to the Hot Springs Church, its church board and the entire church family for graciously opening their doors and hearts for this life-changing weekend. Their hospitality created a safe and sacred space where healing could begin.

Through education, compassion, testimony and the unwavering love of Christ, lives were touched, hearts were strengthened and pain was truly transformed into power.

Adventist Education’s Enduring Mission in Oklahoma Across Oklahoma, our schools represent more than an educational option—they embody a mission.

From Parkview Adventist Academy and Tulsa Adventist Academy to smaller community schools (such as Bristow Adventist School, Muskogee Seventh-day Adventist Christian Academy, Heritage Adventist School, Grand Lake Christian School, Ardmore Adventist Academy, and Pioneer Adventist Christian School), each school shares a unifying purpose: to educate the whole child for this life and for eternity.

This philosophy—educating the spiritual, mental and physical powers of each student—is not new. As Ellen G. White notes in her book Education, “It means more than a preparation for the life that now is. It has to do with the whole being and with the whole period of existence possible to man. It is the harmonious development of the physical, the mental and the spiritual powers. It prepares the student for the joy of service in this world and for the higher joy of wider service in the world to come.” Adventist education has long emphasized learning that extends

beyond academics—shaping character, cultivating a spirit of service and deepening a relationship with God. Many of our campuses are intentionally small; some with fewer than 20 students, others fewer than 10. While some may view this as a limitation, it’s a strength. Small learning environments allow for individualized instruction, deeper relationships and the ability to truly know each student—not only academically but also spiritually and personally. In these settings, education becomes mentorship and schools become communities.

At the secondary level, institutions such as Tulsa Adventist Academy and Parkview Adventist Academy demonstrate another distinctive trait: a commitment to leadership development. Students are given opportunities to lead, serve and grow in ways larger systems often cannot replicate.

Some families question whether Adventist education remains relevant today. The answer is yes. Our mission has remained the same from the beginning, “Educating for Eternity,” and it will not lose its relevance until Jesus

returns. Despite enrollment pressures, resource limitations and shifting educational expectations, we will continue to think creatively and act boldly.

Families today seek both academic excellence and spiritual grounding.

They are asking whether faith-based education can also deliver innovation, rigor and preparation for an increasingly complex future. Our schools are prepared to show that we can.

Guymon Pathfinders Mark Global Youth Day With Outreach

GUYMON, OKLA. – The Guymon Hornbills Pathfinders and Adventurers marked 2026 Global Youth Day with a community outreach initiative, showing appreciation to five local service organizations.

Pathfinder Director Amy Ward collected snacks and water to create appreciation baskets for each location.

Pathfinders assembled the baskets, and church members signed cards that were included in the baskets.

Groups visited the Guymon Fire Department, THE RIDE public transportation service, the Guymon Police Department, the Texas County Sheriff’s Office and the Meals on Wheels/Senior Citizens Center.

The outreach included music throughout the day. Pastor Mungtong Mung accompanied the group on guitar as they sang “He’s Able” in English, Zomi and Spanish. Ward shared the purpose of the visits, and a prayer was offered for workers at each location.

Several sites provided tours and opportunities for interaction. At the Guymon Fire Department, children explored fire trucks and learned about them. Staff at THE RIDE public transportation service invited the group to tour a bus and thanked them for

the recognition. The Guymon Police Department visit included a tour of a former Army barracks facility, including an unused jail cell. The Texas County Sheriff’s Office, though staffed by one person at the time, received the group with appreciation. At the final stop, Meals on Wheels, the Pathfinders learned about the work of preparing and delivering meals to seniors and shut-ins. At each stop, workers expressed gratitude for the gesture.

As the Pathfinders showed appreciation for community servants, they in turn received encouragement and heartfelt thanks. The experience served as a reminder that when we engage in service for God, the blessings flow in both directions.

Ardmore Academy Suspends for Revitalization ARDMORE, OKLA. – Ardmore Adventist Academy will suspend programming for one year as leaders work to address low enrollment and implement a strategic plan aimed at strengthening the school’s future.

The decision was voted by the school board on Feb. 5 following discussion of enrollment trends and long-term sustainability. Board members said the pause will allow time to redesign curriculum, expand hands-on learning opportunities and strengthen connections with the local community.

On Feb. 9 the board reaffirmed the academy’s mission: “Ardmore Adventist Academy is dedicated to nurturing each student in a personal relationship with God consistent with the biblical values and the beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, developing academic excellence and inspiring selfless service to others.”

Leaders indicated that all planning during the suspension period will be guided by this statement.

During the yearlong pause, the board plans to focus on several key areas, including updating academic programs to better reflect Adventist education principles and preparing students for service. Additional efforts will include developing outdoor education opportunities; establishing farm and garden projects for experiential learning; and building stronger partnerships with local churches, families, and community organizations.

Ardmore Adventist Academy traces its roots to 1919, when the first Adventist school opened in the city. The campus has experienced multiple

transitions, including reconstruction after a 2009 tornado destroyed the previous facility. The current building was completed in 2011. The school has also undergone several name changes over the years, most recently becoming Ardmore Adventist Academy in 2004 to better connect with the community.

Leaders expressed confidence that the revitalization effort will position the school for long-term growth.

Plans for the coming year will continue to be developed and shared with constituents as they are finalized.

Grand Lake Christian School Reopens After Closure KETCHUM, OKLA. – Grand Lake Christian School reopened for the 2025–2026 school year after a three-year closure, marking a new chapter for the former Ketchum Adventist School.

The school resumed operations with an enrollment of 10 students at the beginning of the school year, reflecting a continued commitment to providing

Christ-centered education for families in the area.

As Grand Lake Christian School begins this new chapter, the school family looks forward with faith and anticipation, trusting that God has meaningful plans for the years ahead.

Muskogee Academy Emphasizes Music and Ministry

MUSKOGEE, OKLA. – Kindergarteners through eighth graders receive a Christian education emphasizing music, ministry and community engagement at Muskogee Seventh-day Adventist Christian Academy (MSDACA).

Founded in 2013 with classes held in the local church, the school moved into its current facility in 2018. The campus, located on six acres outside Muskogee, includes classrooms, a gymnasium, a music room and a playground, with plans for additional outdoor development.

The school currently serves nine students across multiple grade levels, a setup that allows for individualized instruction, supporting students’ spiritual, academic and social development.

Music education is a central part of the curriculum. Students participate

in events throughout the year, including a Christmas program; graduation; MSDACA Sabbath; and an annual music festival, which recently brought three area schools together at the church.

These events are a tremendous blessing to parents, church members and the broader community, as students shine through their musical witness.

The music program is led by the school’s head teacher, who holds a bachelor’s in education and music and has more than 30 years of teaching experience. Instruction includes choir, hand chimes, glockenspiels, ukulele, guitar, piano and music theory.

The school hosts a weekly homeschool day each Friday. Community students attend for a half day of activities, including Bible, art, music, Spanish and physical education.

Students also participate in field trips, science fairs and community outreach. Service activities include collecting food for holiday baskets and hosting community events.

Bristow School Serves Students in Close-Knit Setting BRISTOW, OKLA. – Bristow Adventist School provides Christ-centered education in a small multi-grade classroom, serving 10 students in grades 1-8.

Founded in the early 1960s by local church members, the school has maintained a focus on faith, learning and community. Today, Patricia Perez teaches in the one-room classroom, where students learn together in a setting designed to encourage academic growth and character development.

In the multi-grade structure, older students often take on leadership roles while younger students benefit from peer support, an approach that fosters responsibility and connection.

Students regularly participate in outdoor activities, art projects and group recreation, including soccer.

Bible instruction remains central to the school’s curriculum, shaping both

classroom learning and students’ spiritual development.

Additional learning opportunities are provided through community volunteers who visit select Fridays to teach practical life skills. Recent activities have included bread making, flower arranging, basic sewing and seasonal projects. Students receive instruction in everyday etiquette, including table setting, introductions, phone manners and courteous communication.

This year’s annual talent show was a highlight. It featured singing, a puppet show and even a small fashion show.

Students participated in the Small Schools Spring Concert in Muskogee, and students continue to participate in local outreach activities.

We are blessed by 93-year-old Ann Hottal, who voluntters by meeting with students for individual reading practice.

Though small in size, the school is rich in warmth, purpose and mission, continuing to nurture young lives in faith, love and learning.

Heritage Adventist School Serves Claremore Families

CLAREMORE, OKLA. – Heritage Adventist School, located on the campus of the Claremore Seventh-day Adventist Church, provides Christ-centered education for students in Pre-K through eighth grade.

Founded in 1979 on land donated by church member Ina Reese, the school was first known as Claremore Seventh-day Adventist School. It adopted the name Heritage Adventist School in 2013.

At the school, students pray, sing and listen to devotional messages, often

sharing personal experiences and testimonies of God’s leading. Mission awareness is woven throughout the year, helping students understand the importance of sharing the Gospel both locally and globally.

Students engage in community activities, including participation in the Veterans Day Parade, an experience that encourages appreciation for service and connection with community.

This year, the school expanded its curriculum to include Portuguese language and culture classes for

Spanish- and English-speaking students, as well as Spanish language classes for English speakers.

Fridays bring a special sense of anticipation as students gather for voice and music classes. These uplifting sessions prepare their hearts for Sabbath and help them develop their musical gifts for God’s glory.

Parkview Adventist Academy Reports Growth OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. – Parkview Adventist Academy has experienced significant growth, with enrollment increasing by 68 percent over the past two years. This momentum reflects growing community confidence in the school’s blend of faith and rigorous education.

With the addition of new teachers, classroom instruction has strengthened, contributing to rising standardized test scores. In addition, campus improvements (including an upgraded playground, enhanced security, a new phone system and split AC installation) have made the school safer, more connected and more comfortable for students and staff. New classroom TVs and 3D printers have brought enhanced learning into daily lessons.

Learning at Parkview extends beyond textbooks. A gardening program teaches stewardship and responsibility through hands-on experience.

Educational trips to destinations such

as Puerto Rico; the Creation Center and Ark Encounter in Kentucky; Washington, D.C.; and Texas historical sites broaden students’ perspectives and reinforce classroom instruction.

Spiritual life remains central to the school experience. Pentecost 2025 marked a season of unity and spiritual growth, supported by local pastors.

Service and outreach continue to shape character, with students participating in efforts such as helping food banks, contributing to Operation Christmas Child and serving through ministries

at Summit Ridge and Wewoka Woods.

These experiences encourage students to live out their faith through compassion and generosity.

Looking ahead, Parkview plans to launch a Lego robotics program, expand staff, increase student activities and offer additional travel and experiential learning opportunities.

Tulsa Adventist Academy Shares Faith Through Service

TULSA, OKLA. – Tulsa Adventist Academy (TAA) prepares students for heaven and earth, and acts of service are woven into each student’s experience. Last school year centered on the Great Commission.

The year began with students packing meals for those in need. Every student participated by scooping grains, sealing

bags or weighing food. Teachers, staff, board members and volunteers all worked together. “I really like the teamwork,” shared one fifth grader.

Teachers guide students in writing thank-you cards for chapel speakers and condolence cards when someone in the TAA family is grieving. Whenever a need arises, handmade cards appear in classrooms, allowing students to practice compassion and kindness.

Students in the TAA chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) plan service events each year to involve the whole school. In September 2025, during the government shutdown, NHS students organized a food bank service day for the high school students. In spring 2026, they led a schoolwide food drive for the Tulsa Community Services Center. Each classroom collected specific dry goods—grains, legumes,

soups, vegetables and pasta—and NHS members delivered the donations for local distribution. “It’s really fun to help other people,” said one elementary student, who participated.

Another highlight for NHS students was a spring visit to a local memory care facility, where they participated in “chair drumming.” Each student and resident used an exercise ball and drumsticks to tap rhythms in unison with music videos. “It wasn’t at all what I expected,” one student said. “I hope we go again.”

Through these experiences and many more, TAA teachers and staff strive to reflect Jesus in their actions.

Our prayer is that students will see Christ in us and carry His love into every community they touch.

Let’s Reach People!

The signs of our times indicate that the return of Jesus is nearer than many realize. Wars, rising violence, political tension, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes and economic instability have become part of everyday life. The imminence of Christ’s return ought to intensify our urgency to reach people while there is still time. As Seventh-day Adventist Christians, we have been called to reach people with the hope and healing found in Jesus Christ.

The ministry of Christ centered on people. In The Ministry of Healing, Ellen G. White emphasizes this point: “Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching the people. The Savior mingled with men as one who desired their good. He showed His sympathy for them, ministered to their needs and won their confidence. Then He bade them, ‘Follow Me.’” Christ’s life illustrated this through reaching fishermen by the sea, tax collectors at work, hurting people in the shadows and broken sinners longing for a second chance. Jesus moved toward people whom others ignored, rejected or overlooked. And if we’re truly following Christ, we must do the same.

Reaching people requires more than sermons or programs inside the church. It requires hearts filled with compassion, eyes open to the needs around us and the willingness to step beyond our comfort zones to meet people where they are. Every day we encounter individuals carrying burdens we can’t see. Behind many smiles are silent struggles. Behind many successes are hidden pains. The church cannot afford to become so internally focused that it loses sight of the hurting world.

Reaching people is the calling of every believer. A kind word, a Bible study, a prayer, an invitation to worship, a compassionate act of service can become a divine appointment. Ministry isn’t confined to the sanctuary on Sabbath morning. Ministry happens in neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, hospitals, restaurants and homes.

Reaching people means building relationships before expecting results.

Christ’s method of ministry still works today—mingle with people, show sympathy, minister to their needs, win their confidence and then invite them to follow Jesus.

As Adventists, we’ve been entrusted with a prophetic message of hope, healing and preparation for the soon return of Christ. But a message cannot change lives unless it’s shared. The world is longing for authentic faith, genuine love and spiritual certainty.

Now is the time to pray more, serve more, love more and reach more!

Someone near us is looking for hope.

Someone near us is looking for biblical truth. Someone near us is looking to meet Jesus. In the name of Jesus, let’s reach them!

Ephesus Church Serves at San Antonio Rodeo SAN ANTONIO, TEX. – Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church launched its 2026 evangelistic year with a focus on soul-winning.

As is tradition, the church began in January with 21 days of prayer and fasting, seeking God’s guidance and asking Him to open doors for ministry.

Through the leadership and community connections of Pastor Robert Norwood, an unexpected opportunity arose. A community leader invited the church to provide plant-based food options at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. This invitation marked a milestone. Ephesus became the first Adventist church invited to participate in the rodeo’s 76-year history, and the only vendor offering a fully plantbased menu.

Operating under the name “Eastside Eats: The Ephesus Experience,”

the booth was inspired by Psalm 34:8: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

This initiative created a platform to share the church’s health message while introducing many attendees to plant-based cuisine.

The success of this effort was made possible by the dedication of church members who came together in unity.

Volunteers of all ages, including youth and seniors, worked morning and afternoon shifts to ensure the booth operated smoothly throughout the event. Their commitment to serving others and glorifying God was evident in every interaction.

The church extends appreciation to Kenneth York, head chef, and his assistants, Kris Brown and Larry Carter.

We are also grateful to John Pickens, who transported volunteers between the church and the rodeo grounds.

Beyond serving food, the team shared literature, prayed with attendees and introduced many to the church’s outreach ministries, including the free dental clinic, food pantry, Pathfinder Club, Wednesday night prayer meetings and Sabbath services.

For three weeks, the Ephesus church served the city of San Antonio, offering not just healthy food alternatives but also hope, faith and connection. The time, energy and commitment of the volunteers made a lasting impact.

The church looks forward to participating in the 2027 rodeo.

Bible Study Challenge Leads to Growing Ministry

ATHENS, TEX. – At a recent Southwest Region Conference Women’s Ministries meeting, Anysia Alexander-Archibald, women’s ministries director, challenged attendees to step beyond their comfort zones, specifically to give an Amazing Facts Bible study and share the good news of Jesus’ soon return.

I accepted the challenge with hesitation, having never given a Bible study before. Initially, I struggled to find someone willing to participate. Determined not to let it pass, I reached out to French and Darlene Tryon and asked if they would help me. “I’ll find the people,” I told them.

We began working through the first and second sets of lessons, and before

long, the group grew. My pastor’s mother and sister joined, along with several others who were not Adventists. What started as a small and uncertain step of faith soon developed into something greater.

In October, during a revival led by Pastor James Brown, 14 individuals were baptized, including members of his own family: his mother, sister, brother and nephew. Witnessing their transformation was deeply moving.

Today, we are preparing to begin a Revelation Seminar, with approximately 10 individuals planning to attend.

What began as a simple challenge became a catalyst for ministry. What once felt intimidating has become a

source of joy and blessing. A spark of encouragement led to action, and that action, by God’s grace, resulted in souls for the kingdom.

Sometimes all it takes is one voice reminding us that we can do more for Jesus. Thank you, Anysia Archibald, for igniting that spark.

Students Bring Black History to Life

BATON ROUGE, LA. – Earlier this year, in celebration of Black History Month, pre-K through eighth-grade students at Martin Luther King Jr. Academy invited the community to a Black History Live Wax Museum, a red-carpet event designed to bring history to life.

From the moment guests arrived and were welcomed by a marquee naming the event, the theme was apparent, from the red, black and green-wrapped water bottles, to the vibrant Afrocentric attire. Inside, a continuous showing of King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech set the tone for an immersive experience.

The concept, developed by Lisa Hansom and Principal Delores Newman, transformed classrooms into interactive exhibits. Students, dressed in period costumes, portrayed influential African American figures across

themed categories such as Heroes, Helpers and Pioneers; Freedom, Education and Leadership; and Modern Leaders and Trailblazers.

With the press of a button, each “wax figure” came to life. Younger students portrayed figures such as activist Rosa Parks, tennis player Arthur Ashe, golfer Tiger Woods and inventor Garrett Morgan. In the upper grades, guests encountered pioneers such as educator Anna Knight, justice Thurgood Marshall, journalist Ida B. Wells, explorer Matthew Henson, author Zora Neale Hurston, athlete Colin Kaepernick, former president Barack Obama, minister Jesse Jackson and evangelist E. E. Cleveland, among others.

Students performed their roles with confidence and enthusiasm, demonstrating both research and pride in their presentations.

A local television reporter covering the event described it as “a fun and interactive way for students to learn more about their history.”

Hansom added that the experience helped students “see where they’ve come from—and realize they can achieve great things too.”

The program’s success has already inspired plans for an expanded event next year.

CCYF Emphasizes Witnessing and Evangelism BAYTOWN, TEX. – Ten churches from across the capital cities came together for this year’s Capital Cities Youth Federation (CCYF), held March 20–21 at Baytown United Seventh-day Adventist Church. The theme for the weekend, “Go Run and Tell That,” focused on witnessing and evangelism.

CCYF began Friday night with a play titled Jesus on Trial, presented by the youth of Baytown United church. The performance shared a message about Jesus’ love and the responsibility to tell others. During intermission, young people from across the federation delivered three sermonettes.

Sabbath School opened with a panel discussion featuring youth from

capital cities churches. The discussion centered on spiritual growth and deepening faith in Christ. Following that, the divine worship service included a Pathfinder processional, praise music, a puppet ministry presentation and a performance by the CCYF mass choir.

Guest speaker Robert Norwood, senior pastor of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church in San Antonio, presented a message titled “Tattletales Matter.” Drawing from the story of the Samaritan woman, he encouraged attendees to share God’s goodness.

The afternoon included a potluck provided by the church’s hospitality team. After lunch, Pathfinders led a parade through the streets of Baytown

to the town square. The Baytown Police Department and Baytown Parks and Recreation assisted with the event.

Sabbath concluded with songs and prayer, followed by volleyball and basketball tournaments at a local gym.

We are grateful to all the parents and leaders across our federation churches for their continued support in nurturing the spiritual growth of our youth.

The Secret of Contentment For many years, I misunderstood one of the most quoted verses in Scripture, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” found in Philippians 4:13 (NKJV).

I once believed Philippians 4:13 was a promise of unlimited success, that through Christ I could achieve anything I set my mind to. It became a quiet justification for personal ambition— career goals, financial milestones and long-term plans. At one point, I even viewed it as a kind of supernatural boost, expecting Christ’s strength to show up in physical ways, like to help me dunk a basketball. Looking back, I had turned a Christ-centered truth into a self-centered expectation.

But Paul likely wrote this while under house arrest. These weren’t the reflections of a man living in comfort but from someone who understood uncertainty, limitations and pressure.

In verse 11, Paul says, “I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.”

Contentment didn’t come naturally to Paul. It was learned over time, developed through seasons of need and seasons of provision.

Paul knew what it meant to have little and what it meant to have enough.

He faced hunger, hardship and intense pressure, and, at other times, his needs were met through the generosity of others. But through it all, Paul discovered that his satisfaction in life couldn’t rest on circumstances. It was rooted in his relationship with Christ.

This is the context that gives meaning to his declaration in Philippians. Paul’s words remind us that our strength in Christ equips us to endure every situation with steadiness, revealing several important truths about the strength Christ provides: 1. Perseverance through Christ.

Paul points us to a strength that sustains us through challenges. Christ empowers us to remain steady, even when the journey is difficult.

2. A life of dependence. Strength comes from Christ Himself, working within us through the Holy Spirit. It’s a sustaining presence that fills our hearts with peace and anchors us.

3. Spiritual resilience. This strength produces a steady faith that remains grounded and secure.

This leads us to a searching question: Are we truly content in Christ, in our homes, in our ministries, in our leadership and in the direction of our lives? Philippians 4:13 calls us to a deeper trust. It invites us to rest in the sufficiency of Christ.

In other words, it is a mindset of confidence and surrender that helps us realize we do not have to chase after more to be complete, because we already have what we need in Jesus.

Prayer Answered through The Great Controversy Outreach DALLAS, TEX. – Of the many ways to reach communities with the message of Jesus and His soon return, one method Seventh-day Adventists are encouraged to use is sharing literature, particularly The Great Controversy.

More than 100 churches participated in that outreach on April 25, distributing nearly 200,000 copies across Texas.

In partnership with Streams of Light International, volunteers throughout the greater Dallas area distributed books the week before the conference-wide distribution. In the Dallas area alone, more than 40,000 copies of The Great Controversy were shared, resulting in nearly 300 Bible study requests.

The impact of this community outreach is captured in the following story.

Alyssa knocked on a door, and a young man answered. She handed him a packet and spent several minutes talking with him before offering prayer.

Tearfully, the man shared about the struggles he had been facing and his disappointment with the church he had been attending. He said that during a recent service, he felt impressed that “this isn’t the right church,” and since then had been praying for direction.

Alyssa invited him to a church gathering. During the event, they shared a meal, made connections with church members and participated in testimony time. He also connected with Joshua Reyna, associate pastor of the Mosaic Christian Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist Church, to begin Bible studies.

The man later shared that only minutes before Alyssa arrived, he had been crying and praying for guidance about what to do next. Then came the knock on his door, and right there on his doorstep, God answered in a way he felt was truly divine.

That is the power of taking the time to knock on someone’s door and pray with them. We often have no idea what battles people are fighting behind those doors, but when we step out in faith, we step into divine appointments. Hearts are already being prepared. Prayers are already being prayed, and when we show up, doors don’t just open—hearts do too.

Mortgage Payoff Fuels Community Outreach

WICHITA FALLS, TEX. – The Wichita Falls Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church celebrated a historic Sabbath on April 25, dedicating its recently debt-free church building. The sanctuary was filled with gratitude and joy as church members, guests and Texas Conference leaders gathered for the significant milestone.

In 2024, when Anthony Crawford became pastor of the Wichita Three Angels church, he noticed that the church’s mortgage was limiting

ministry opportunities. He presented a payoff plan, and the church united in support of the vision. Their dedication led to the church paying off the mortgage in less than 18 months, nearly seven years ahead of schedule.

This resulted in saving the church more than $180,000 in interest, allowing the church to redirect funds toward ministry and community outreach.

The April 25 celebration also honored the rich legacy of the 104-year-old congregation. Former pastors Gary Blanchard, John Clark and Denilson Reis delivered video messages, celebrating the church’s journey.

The dedication ceremony featured the tradition of burning mortgage documents, symbolizing the church’s financial freedom and commitment to God’s work. Cheers, applause and prayers echoed as the flames consumed the papers.

The day culminated in a community outreach event when members distributed 500 copies of Ellen G. White’s The Great Controversy to Wichita Falls residents, inviting community members to attend a gospel concert scheduled for a few weeks later.

One elderly couple greeted participants enthusiastically and asked about church service times. After learning about Sabbath services, they also asked about activities held during the week, explaining that they had often seen many cars in the church parking lot while driving by.

The day marked not only the end of financial burdens but also the beginning of a revitalized era in the church’s ministry, serving as a reminder of how God blesses His people in ways they may not always imagine.

Honoring Achievement at the Pathfinder Bible Experience

HAWTHORNE, FLA. – The Pathfinder Bible Experience (PBE) exemplifies dedication and discipline among youth, as demonstrated by Texas Pathfinder teams during the North American Division (NAD) competition held in Hawthorne, Fla., April 17–18.

PBE is a rigorous competition where teams of seven spend a year studying a specific book of the Bible. Each member is responsible for memorizing

verses, culminating in a challenging 100-question test at the NAD level.

Enthusiasm for this competition continues to grow. This year, 39 Texas teams participated, up from 29 last year.

The journey to the division level starts locally, where teams must excel in order to advance to the conference and union levels, culminating in a showcase of top teams from across North America as well as international participants, including teams from South Korea and the United Kingdom.

In preparation, some participants began their days as early as 4 a.m. to study before school. Coaches and counselors also dedicate substantial time to mentoring their teams. These efforts paid off as Texas teams performed very well this year.

One standout team was particularly noticeable because it was composed of only two members. The “Dynamic Duo” from Crosswalk Fellowship in The Colony, Tex. achieved nearly perfect

scores at various competition levels.

Notably, one of the members is not Adventist, making the team’s success an example of how PBE can connect young people of different backgrounds through Bible study and teamwork.

Their achievement has sparked curiosity about how such a small team can excel at such a high level.

The dedication of Texas Pathfinders not only elevates the standard for future participants but also strengthens community engagement.

As teams gear up for next year’s competition, excitement for even greater representation at the national level continues to grow. PBE serves as a platform for spiritual growth, teamwork and lifelong friendships as Texas Pathfinders continue to pave the way for future excellence.

Fifth and Sixth Graders Thrive at Texas Outdoor School GLEN ROSE, TEX. – Texas Conference fifth- and sixth-grade students from 20 elementary schools gathered April 13–17 at Riverbend Retreat Center for outdoor school. The annual event encourages participants to spend time outdoors, unplug from electronics and engage with nature. Including staff and sponsors, about 300 people attended.

With the theme “Follow the Leader,” one goal was to help students learn to work together. Students rotated through nine activity groups, allowing students to get to know one another while participating in different classes.

Each day also included teamwork activities focused on collaboration, celebrating differences and teamwork.

The week concluded with worship and teamwork activities before a picnic lunch at Dinosaur Valley State Park.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Elton DeMoraes, former Texas Conference president, “seeing our young people blossom as they interact with each other and try new things.”

Several students expressed that they enjoyed spending time with friends and trying new activities. One student said they had been afraid to try a new activity at first, but after participating, they wanted to repeat it.

It was wonderful to see the students' excitement and heart-warming to see them grow and flourish during this experience. We’re grateful for all those who helped make this memorable event possible.

Camp Meeting Inspires New Sabbath Keepers

DALLAS, TEX. – One day, I received an unexpected phone call from a woman in Louisiana who contacted the Dallas Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church after realizing that the fourth commandment was often overlooked. Although Seone had faithfully attended church on Sundays, prayer led her to understand that the true Sabbath is the seventh day.

As I listened, her words echoed the message we proclaim. What she discovered through prayer and Scripture aligned with our faith. From

that moment on, I began sharing our church’s YouTube worship services with her every Sabbath morning, and she frequently expressed gratitude for the messages and worship.

About a month later, I invited Seone to the Southwestern Korean Camp Meeting at Lone Star Camp. She hoped to attend with her husband, although his health was a concern. Our church prayed earnestly for them.

A week before the camp meeting, she sent wonderful news: “We will attend together. My husband’s health

has improved greatly.” We were overjoyed and gave thanks to God. Seone and her husband attended the camp meeting and were touched by the warm fellowship and messages shared. They expressed heartfelt gratitude for the grace they experienced during their time with us. After returning home, Seone and her husband wanted to continue to observe the Sabbath and stay connected with us through online fellowship.

Their experience reflected the broader outreach impact of the camp meeting, which also welcomed three non-Christians and six non-Adventists.

For many attendees, the weekend provided a meaningful opportunity to encounter the faith and fellowship of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. At a time when evangelism is not easy, this experience served as a reminder that camp meetings can be opportunities for outreach and spiritual renewal.

Garland Church Provides Free Dental Care GARLAND, TEX. – The Garland Faith Community Seventh-day Adventist Church partnered with Texas A&M University College of Dentistry and other dental volunteers to host a free dental clinic in March. The church transformed its fellowship hall and additional areas into treatment spaces for the event, which provided community residents with free dental services, including screenings, cleanings, fillings and extractions.

Volunteer dentists, dental students and assistants served patients from across the region, including areas beyond Garland. These volunteers brought decades of combined experience and a shared commitment to caring for underserved communities.

By the end of the event, dental teams had completed 173 procedures

for 152 patients, helping restore painfree smiles for many attendees.

Haircare services were also available, with 23 individuals receiving assistance.

Garland church health ministries leader, Kring Lorenzo, connected with Hoda Abdellatif, director of the community outreach office at Texas A&M, to help organize the event.

The dental team included Schubert Sapian, a graduate of Loma Linda University School of Dentistry who practices in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; Vinh Trinh, a dentist who travels to serve underserved communities; and Margaret R. McMillan and Abdellatif, both faculty and clinical associate professors at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry.

This marked the second year the Garland church, pastored by Sean Harris, has offered free dental services to the community.

Adventurers ‘Lock In’ at Camp

CLIFTON, TEX. – More than 2,500 Adventurers and their families gathered at Lake Whitney Ranch, April 10–12, for the Texas Conference Adventurer and Family Camp, a weekend marked by worship, fellowship and a renewed call to Christian service. Centered on the theme “Lock In: Love and Service,” this year’s camp challenged attendees to move beyond passive faith and embrace their God-given duty to love, help and serve those around them.

The weekend opened Friday evening with a vibrant Parade of Nations, a display that highlighted the diversity of Adventurer ministry across Texas.

As families and clubs marched in celebration, the program set the tone for a weekend that reflected the richness of God’s family and the unity found in Christ. The parade was more than a colorful introduction; it was a reminder that the Gospel unites people from every background in a shared mission.

Sabbath was filled with praise, worship, spiritual messages and activities designed for the entire family. From the opening moments of the day, there was a clear sense that God was present and moving among His people.

Throughout the worship experiences, Adventurers and parents alike were reminded that love is not merely something Christians speak about, but something they are called to live out in practical, visible ways.

The most powerful testimony came through lives surrendered to Jesus.

As the Holy Spirit worked on hearts, 39 Adventurers chose to accept Christ and be baptized. Their public commitment became the highlight of the camp and a reminder that ministry to children and families continues to bear eternal fruit.

The weekend concluded with an obstacle run that gave Adventurers the opportunity to participate alongside

their parents. Filled with energy, laughter and teamwork, the activity created a meaningful space for families to bond and make lasting memories together.

It served as a fitting close to a weekend that emphasized not only spiritual growth but also the importance of connection within the family unit.

Adventurer and Family Camp was a testimony to what happens when families come together to worship, serve and grow in Christ. Hearts were touched, lives were changed and the Texas Conference once again witnessed the beauty and strength of Adventurer ministry in action.

From Summer Moments to Lasting Impact As summer unfolds and a new school year approaches, families often find themselves balancing unhurried days and shared experiences with the anticipation of structured routines and full calendars. The memories being created, whether through travel, simple moments at home or time spent together, remind us what matters most.

Parenting is often described this way: the days can feel long, but the years move quickly. Daily responsibilities and constant demands can feel overwhelming, yet childhood itself is brief. The window of influence in shaping children’s lives is both significant and short. Research has shown that the earliest years of a child’s life play a crucial role in development.

While influence continues well beyond those early stages, the principle remains clear: the time we have with our children matters and should be approached with intention.

As the school year begins, both home and school environments will shape a child’s character, values and faith. For this reason, the partnership between family and Adventist education is especially valuable. Education is not only about academic growth, but also about guiding young people

to know God, understand His love and develop a sense of purpose. What is reinforced at school finds its deepest meaning when it is lived out at home.

Children are constantly learning.

They are influenced by how we speak, respond, prioritize and reveal our faith.

Even small everyday moments shape how children understand the world and their place in it. Many parents can recall simple but meaningful memories that reflect how closely children mirror what they see. Those early impressions often remain into adulthood.

The influence of a parent extends beyond words. It’s most clearly seen in consistency, when beliefs and actions align. If the goal is to share faith and hope with others, that mission begins in the home. The example set in daily life becomes one of the most meaningful forms of witness.

A Christ-centered home carries a quiet but powerful influence. It reflects God’s presence in practical, visible ways and can speak to others who observe it. In this sense, the family becomes a testimony of God’s transforming power.

What kind of influence is being encouraged at home? How are faith, love and purpose being modeled?

These questions remind us that the work of shaping lives can happen in the simplest, most consistent moments.

Scripture offers this encouragement in Deuteronomy 11:19: “Teach them [God’s commands] to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” This counsel points to a faith that is lived daily and woven naturally into every part of life.

As families move toward a new season, the moments shared, both big and small, can continue to shape hearts, strengthen faith and leave an impact.

Texico Participates in Division PBE

HAWTHORNE, FLA. – Texico Conference Pathfinders and leaders contributed in multiple roles at the 2026 Pathfinder Bible Experience (PBE), a North American Division event that brought together more than 260 clubs and participants from six countries—the United States, Canada, Bermuda, Korea, France and Brazil. More than 6,500 attended in person, with an additional 14,000 watching online.

Aracely Robles, Texico Club Ministries administrative assistant, and Eliseo Mauricio, Texico area club coordinator, served as judges. Mauricio’s daughter, Catalina, an Amarillo Pathfinder, also assisted in the judging room. Together, they helped review more than 24,000 submitted answers,

with each judge evaluating approximately 690 responses.

Texico’s involvement also included participant engagement. The Texico Club Ministries Department created a Pathfinder Bingo activity card to encourage interaction throughout the event. Pathfinders across the venue participated in the activity.

Conference representatives also supported media coverage. Eric Chavez, Texico Conference Youth, Young Adult and Club Ministries director, and Naomi Martínez, a student from Texico currently studying at Southern Adventist University, served as on-camera hosts for the YouTube livestream, conducting interviews and highlighting key moments.

Texico also had success in the competition. The Odessa Light Bearers earned first place, reflecting their preparation and teamwork.

“What a journey it’s been for Texico!” Chavez said. “Not long ago, we were quietly serving behind the scenes. Now, we’re stepping into leadership and helping shape the future of Pathfinder ministry. It’s clear something special is happening. There’s a new level of vision, energy and commitment to our young people that you can feel. And the best part? This is only the beginning. It’s exciting to watch how God continues to open doors and expand the impact of this ministry.”

North Valley Youth Evangelism Grows ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – What began as an effort to encourage young people to attend church has grown into a youthled initiative at the Albuquerque North Valley Seventh-day Adventist Spanish Church. This year’s Youth Evangelism Week, held March 29 through April 5, reflected both a successful series of meetings and continued growth over several years.

Originally organized as an outreach for youth, the event is now largely led by them. With support from the church, young people planned, led and invited others, demonstrating increasing ownership and engagement.

The meetings were led by Raciel Hernandez, a pastor from New Hampshire. His presentations centered on the theme “Vive Su Amor, Compártelo” (Live His Love, Share It). He challenged the attendees to demonstrate their faith through daily actions and described the church as an oasis

in the desert, a place where others can find the Living Water.

Attendance reflected the growing impact of the event. Each evening drew approximately 100 individuals, with weekend services exceeding 200.

The week concluded with a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday.

Over the past several years, the church has seen continued impact from these meetings. Young people have returned to church, individuals have chosen baptism and others have taken additional steps in their spiritual lives. This year, two young people, David Ajpacaja and Ashley Marquez, were baptized.

One of the most meaningful moments grew out of an activity from the previous year. During that event, parents were invited to write down the names of their children on a large sheet displayed before the congregation as part of a focused time of prayer.

This year, that moment came full circle. Marquez was one of the names written on the sheet the previous year, and her mother shared a message with the congregation about the experience. Following that, members were again invited to come forward and write names on the same sheet. Many responded, with some waiting up to 30 minutes to add a name to the sheet.

The impact of the event has also been seen beyond the meetings themselves. Oscar, who was baptized the previous year, is now serving in the church’s sound system ministry.

At North Valley, young people are not only attending, but also participating and leading. What began as a small initiative continues to develop into an active, growing ministry.

Amarillo Church Serves on Global Youth Day AMARILLO, TEX. – Members of the Amarillo Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church marked Global Youth Day with service across the community, reflecting the theme “Communion in Action.”

The Sabbath began with a worship service highlighting the church’s youth and their involvement in ministry. The program was shortened to allow more time for outreach, as members prepared to serve in multiple locations throughout the city. Participants gathered at a local park and divided into five groups led by youth leaders Isai, Gracie, Sarah and Ronaldo as well as Pastor Julian Escobedo.

The groups first visited a local fire station, where they prayed with firefighters and shared a song titled “Fires” as an expression of appreciation. From there, the groups continued to their assigned service projects.

One group visited Georgia Manor Nursing Home, where youth sang and led residents in a spring-themed craft activity. The activities director expressed appreciation and asked about the possibility of future visits.

Another group served at the Wild West Wildlife Rehab Center, assisting with cleaning and maintenance while learning about the care of rescued animals, including coyotes, bobcats, opossums and hawks. One participant, Josue, was inspired by the experience and signed up to volunteer there.

A third group visited the Amarillo Animal Shelter, where youth and children spent time walking dogs and engaging them in enrichment activities while learning about the shelter’s work in the community.

Members also partnered with Transformation Park, where they worked

in the kitchen to prepare 230 burritos for distribution within the shelter and throughout the community. Staff members expressed appreciation for the group’s teamwork and efficiency.

After completing the outreach projects, members of the youth leadership team visited two church members who had been ill, offering prayer, encouragement and music.

We have no doubt that God used Global Youth Day as an opportunity to reveal Himself to our community. In a time when Amarillo has faced many challenges, we felt called to be a light.

As a pastor, I firmly believe that not only was our community impacted, but our youth and church family were also deeply blessed through their service, time and dedication.

Children Share Messages at Convocatoria Infantil

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Children from conference Spanish churches participated in “Convocatoria Infantil: Héroes de la Biblia” on April 11 at the Rio Grande Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Participants ages 4 to 16 presented short messages based on biblical figures including David, Esther, Daniel and Moses. Nineteen children participated, an increase from seven in 2024.

The event, which lasted approximately four hours, also included special music led by children. Participants demonstrated their developing public-speaking skills as they practiced communicating clearly and engaging with the audience. Each was introduced individually, allowing the audience to learn more about them.

Aracely Robles, wife of Rio Grande church’s pastor, reflected on the participants’ growth. “It was inspiring to see how the children’s demeanor changed,” she said. “Many began feeling nervous, shy or unsure, but as they shared their messages and received feedback, you could see a positive shift in their confidence. We gave them feedback on their interaction with the

audience and highlighted the personal stories they included. We also intentionally encouraged them to continue serving and sharing God’s message in whatever way they are called to serve.”

More than just a program, this event provided an opportunity for young hearts to discover their voice, deepen their faith and recognize the gifts God has placed within them. The commitment shown by both the children and their families through weeks of preparation was evident throughout the day.

The impact was evident in every giggle, every smile, every message and every step of courage taken, reminding all in attendance that God can use even the youngest voices to make a powerful difference.

FESJA Texico Marks 20 Years of Ministry CORRALES, N.M. – More than 170 paticipants gathered March 6–8 at Bonita Park Camp to celebrate the 20th anniversary of FESJA Texico under the theme “El Amor Que Conquistó.”

Founded as the Federación de Sociedades Juveniles Adventistas, FESJA Texico has grown over the past two decades into a youth ministry focused on spiritual growth, fellowship and leadership development among Hispanic young people across the Texico Conference.

Participants from 15 churches in New Mexico and Texas attended the anniversary event, which included worship services, a Bible knowledge exam and a church group competition highlighting both biblical understanding and teamwork. Trophies and medals were awarded in recognition of participation and achievement.

An awards ceremony recognized individuals who have served throughout FESJA’s history, including past presidents, vice presidents and pastors who contributed to the organization’s

development. During the program, former and current leaders shared reflections on the role FESJA has played in their lives, pointing to spiritual growth, lasting friendships and personal development.

“I never imagined that what started as a dream would still be a reality 20 years later,” said Founding President Joel Carrillo.

The weekend also included a creative evening program titled “Noche de Estrellas y Estrellados.”

Led by FESJA Texico President Karen Maturino and Vice President Gerardo

Jaquez, the event reflected FESJA’s ongoing emphasis on connecting young people with their faith and preparing them for leadership in their churches and communities.

The anniversary served both as a celebration of FESJA’s history and a continuation of its mission to support and develop young leaders.

Nursing Department Unveils Pediatric Simulation Suite

KEENE, TEX. – Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) hosted a ribbon cutting for its new Pediatric Simulation Suite during Homecoming Weekend.

The renovation, including new equipment and medical manikins, was made possible through a gift from 1992 alum Wayne Powell and his wife, Misti, in memory of their grandson, Asher Tax. The new equipment in the Pediatric Simulation Suite includes an infant manikin, a 1-year-old manikin, a 5-yearold manikin, a medical bassinet, an

omnibed incubator, a pediatric bed, an IV pole with various pumps, a crash cart and a defibrillator. The renovation also features a simulated pediatric hospital room and a simulation control room.

“This space goes beyond equipment,” said Elisane Almeida, associate professor of nursing. “It prepares students to provide safe, confident care for our most vulnerable population—children. In pediatrics, where both patients and families are deeply impacted, simulation allows students

to build confidence, strengthen teamwork and learn from mistakes in a safe environment before entering real clinical settings.”

The suite conveys messages of hope with artwork of Noah’s Ark, rainbows and butterflies. The Noah’s Ark mural was hand-painted by SWAU art instructor Marcela Wall. Students from Burton Adventist Elementary contributed paintings of animals and butterflies, now framed on the walls.

A typography graphic quotes Psalm 127:3 (NLT): “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.” “It was wonderful to see the room take shape,” said Kerrie Kimbrow, professor of nursing. “Some of the nursing students got a sneak peek. I wish you could have seen the wonder and excitement on their faces. Every simulation lab is where we partner with God in preparing nurses for His work.

We are so grateful for this extraordinary gift.”

SWAU and Hill College Launch Transfer Program KEENE, TEX. – Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) and Hill College launched a transfer partnership called “SWAU in Two,” designed to provide a clear, affordable path to a bachelor’s degree for students in Johnson County and surrounding communities.

The program allows Hill College students who have completed an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Arts in Technology degree to complete a bachelor’s degree at SWAU in as little as two years.

The agreement should simplify the transfer process and expand access to higher education. Students will benefit from a streamlined credit-transfer process, continued access to financial aid and academic support as they transition to a four-year institution.

Students in good academic standing with at least a 2.5 GPA qualify for automatic admission. Program participants will receive a 20 percent tuition discount, which may be combined with the transfer student scholarship.

SWAU Faculty Contributes to Dinosaur Study KEENE, TEX. – Jeremy McLarty, associate professor of biology and director of the Dinosaur Science Museum and Research Center at Southwestern Adventist University, co-authored new paleontological research published in PLOS ONE as part of an international study. The research examines dinosaur footprints, tail traces and swim tracks in Torotoro National Park.

The study describes an exceptionally rich fossil record, with thousands of preserved tracks and trackways, along with bird prints and tail traces.

Together, these impressions give researchers a rare glimpse into dinosaur activity in an ancient landscape.

This study offered McLarty the chance to explore dinosaurs through a revealing type of evidence, since tracks “can tell us things about dinosaurs that we can’t learn from their bones alone.”

McLarty emphasized that the site’s importance lies not simply in its size, but in the breadth of what it preserves, including evidence of varied dinosaur behavior such as swimming, changing direction and dragging toes and tails.

McLarty noted that many people today are drawn to the idea that “there are still new things to find and understand,” and that the world continues to hold “fascinating mysteries waiting to be uncovered.”

As a faculty member, researcher and museum director, McLarty models how scientific inquiry and teaching can work together, linking classroom learning with real-world discovery and international collaboration.

One joy of research, he explained, is becoming “the first person to know a particular piece of information” then sharing it with others. He hopes that spirit of discovery will help to inspire and shape students.

SWAU Students Win National Entrepreneurship Honors KEENE, TEX. – Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) students earned top honors at entrepreneurship competitions, including a first-place finish at the Enactus USA Expo and a semifinalist placement at Texas Christian University’s (TCU) Values and Ventures Competition.

At the Enactus USA Expo in Denver, SWAU’s student-led venture Color Palette, which hosts art workshops and sells art kits for therapeutic benefits, placed first in the Social Venture Challenge (SVC) with a unanimous vote.

Students Keila Cabrera and Cassandra Brumm began the project as freshmen in an entrepreneurship course.

“The energy of the Enactus event was invigorating as always, but winning the SVC first place transformed that energy into momentum,” Brumm said.

Over the past four years, SWAU’s Enactus team has ranked among the top eight teams in the country in the early-stage competition, which features newer startup concepts.

SWAU students also competed at the TCU Values and Ventures Competition. Jose Cendejas, Alvin Kimanga and Caleb Thomson advanced as

semifinalists with their startup, Campus Cycle, a platform designed for college campuses that allows students to buy, sell and trade within a verified community. Out of more than 250 applicants, 120 teams were invited to compete, and 40 were selected as semifinalists.

This marks SWAU’s first time reaching the semifinalist level at the event.

Kimanga emphasized the value of connection at the TCU Values and Ventures Competition. “While wanting to win is great, it shouldn’t be the only goal. There are amazing opportunities to meet people and build connections that could last a lifetime.”

Thomson said participating in both events was beneficial for strengthening his professional development.

Additional recognition came at Hyve, an Adventist Entrepreneurs Network collegiate competition. SWAU students earned second place while competing against other institutions including Andrews University, Southern Adventist University and Walla Walla University.

These outcomes reflect continued growth in entrepreneurship initiatives at SWAU, where students are gaining experience through competition, mentorship and applied learning.

Students Explore Health Careers at AdventHealth

KILLEEN, TEX. – During the spring semester, AdventHealth Central Texas welcomed 30 students from Shoemaker High School who want to pursue careers in the medical field.

The initiative’s purpose was to spark curiosity and expose students to the workings of a hospital while connecting aspiring health care professionals with experienced medical staff. The students explored clinical and nonclinical careers, including nursing, marketing, management and volunteerism.

The day began with a video about empathy work in a hospital and a question-and-answer session. Students interacted directly with hospital executives and physicians, including Jennifer Swenson, president and CEO of AdventHealth Central Texas, who shared her story. In addition to offering personal insights, the team made space for students to voice their own aspirations and concerns.

“The students were very engaged throughout the entire day and made the most of the opportunities to ask our team members questions,” said Tanner Carlson, marketing manager at AdventHealth Central Texas.

Following the Q&A, students went on guided tours of key hospital departments, including the emergency department, catheterization lab and imaging suite. These immersive experiences allowed students to observe new technology and understand the

critical roles of different medical professionals across the hospital.

“My students were overjoyed and energized by everything they learned,” said Chelsea Hutchison, health science teacher at Shoemaker High School.

“It reinforced for me that we have students who are eager to learn and grow.

It also showed me that I am making a meaningful impact in their lives and, most importantly, that AdventHealth truly cares about its community and future health care leaders by investing in experiences like this.”

AdventHealth Central Texas remains committed to supporting educational outreach and inspiring the next generation of medical professionals. By opening its doors to local students, the hospital hopes to foster a lasting impact on the community and help shape the future of health care in Central Texas.

Hospital Seminar Highlights Colon Health Awareness BURLESON, TEX. – Texas Health Huguley Hospital recently hosted a colon health seminar designed to educate the community, encourage preventive care and create space for open conversation.

Attendees heard from medical professionals, asked questions and learned practical steps for maintaining colon health. The event fostered a supportive environment focused on awareness and early detection, with experts offering guidance on reducing risk.

Mike Bismar, M.D., a gastroenterologist at Texas Health Huguley, led much of the discussion, emphasizing the importance of routine screenings.

Participants were encouraged to take an active role in their health by staying informed and following medical guidance.

Lisa Landry, assistant nurse manager at Texas Health Huguley, shared that

after delaying a routine colonoscopy, she learned that precancerous cells had developed.

“I had several polyps removed,” she said. “If I had waited six more months it would have been cancer.”

Landry, who has no family history of colon cancer, now uses her experience to advocate for early detection and regular checkups.

Events like this seminar aim to address growing concerns around colorectal cancer, particularly as cases have recently increased among younger adults. Health experts note that while rates have declined in older populations, diagnoses among adults under 50 have risen, making awareness and timely screening important.

Through expert insight and personal testimony, the seminar emphasized that early action can save lives.

“Don’t take these tests for granted,” Landry said. “Do the screening if the doctor recommends it.”

Burnham Dennis Rand, 71, passed away on Oct. 5, 2025, after a long fight against cancer.

Dennis was born Dec. 27, 1953. in Meridian, Miss., to Agnes Mosby Rand and Lionel Rand.

For 39 years, he was a pastor to many in the Kansas-Nebraska, Iowa-Missouri and ArkansasLouisiana conferences, retiring in 2022.

Dennis was well-loved by church members and family and was known for his sense of humor, gentle nature and peacemaking spirit. He was looking forward to seeing all of us in heaven.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Majie Rand Dallas and George W. Rand. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jan Briggs Rand; two children, Ginger Rand Cochran (Lee) and Loren Rand (Anna); and three much-loved grandchildren, Lily Cochran, Molly Cochran and Lucas Rand.

A private memorial was held with family at home, with many memories shared. We anticipate reuniting with Dennis when Jesus comes to take us home.
