VANHOVE CATTLE CO. 47 SPRING-CALVING COWS • 91 SPRING-CALVING HEIFERS 11 SPRING YEARLING HERD SIRE PROSPECTS 1

Welcome, Friends! Each year as I sit down to write this welcome letter, I am reminded of the audience that I am addressing—YOU, our loyal and trusted customer. Whether you are a past, present or future customer of Vanhove Cattle Company, Sheryl and I say “THANK YOU.” It’s because of you that we do what we do, 365 days a year. We love developing a product with look, soundness, function and predictability to perform for you in your own programs. So many times you hear owners at sales all over the country claim that this is “the best set we have ever brought to you,” but isn’t that the goal? We try to select genetics each year that we feel can advance our program to the next level and keep improving on our cow herd, which in turn gives us the ability to create a better product each year for you. We are extremely proud of this set of cattle. Our commitment to you is to offer you our very best, and we can say with confidence that this 15th set of proven young cows and powerful bred heifers is the absolute greatest set we have ever brought to the Dakota Classic. The proven blend of Angus, Simmental and Maine-Anjou genetics has created a maternal base for these model club calf producing females. Many of the sires represented are owned by our program. Sires like Damage Control, Powerline, Adrenaline, Merlin and others are the basis of our program, and then we have added such proven maternal sires like Irish Whiskey, Cerveza, Whizard, Patton and Daddy’s Money to create a cow herd that will give you years of production. Whether you choose to produce club calves or replacement females, these genetics have proven time and time again to work. As committed to the maternal side of this business as we are, so many of these young cows in the sale have never been mated to club calf sires until now for the sale. You will be amazed at how powerful and massive bodied these females are. The cattle will be available for viewing online at the Dakota Classic Sale page on www.vanhovecattlecompany.com. Please call any time if you have questions about the cattle or if you may need further buying assistance. We will help you in any way to arrange transportation throughout the Midwest and Southern states. Buy with confidence and get with us immediately after the sale. We welcome you and humbly Thank You for your interest in the 15th Annual Dakota Classic, Saturday, February 1, 2020 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. We look forward to seeing you all there. Please make the trip—You Won’t Be Disappointed. We sincerely thank you and appreciate your friendship and continued business. See you at the sale,

Rob Vanhove

Vanhove Cattle Company retains the right to two successful flushes on every female in the sale, at the new owner’s convenience and the seller’s expense.

BREEDING GUARANTEE

All females are sold under the condition “safe in calf” as attested to by a licensed veterinarian and sell with no further guarantee. The ultrasound results reported are as accurate as possible but are not guaranteed. No guarantee is given that bred females will deliver a live calf.

NOTE ABOUT PREGNANCY TESTING

Careful consideration was given when selecting the cattle for the sale in reference to A.I. service. We feel that the majority of the cattle selling are safe to their A.I. date or the approximate due date that is given. Please make sure that you do not confuse A.I. service date with approximate due date. Some of the females that were only exposed to the pasture sires are given an approximate due date in correlation with the vet examination. While we cannot guarantee A.I. service, we are confident that a large part of the offering is A.I. safe. Any additional pregnancy testing will be available on the sale supplement sheet.

The cattle are available for viewing at Vanhove Cattle Co., Madison, South Dakota, until Wednesday, January 29th. They will be ready for viewing at Sioux Falls Regional Livestock beginning Friday, January 31st. Lunch will be available sale day.

Vanhove 736 — daughter of Lot 1 …sold as Lot 56 in the 2019 sale

ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY! You need to study this female in person to truly understand the power and dimension that she has from nose to tail. Whizard daughters are in demand and for good reason—they click with the great Here I Am as good as anything going. Five out of the top seven selling steers in the 2019 Vanhove pasture sale were Here I Am x Whizard calves that averaged $17,750. The Whizards have been mainstays at Vanhove’s and are hard to get Rob to part with, but this time we’re bringing two Whizards to town to show you our commitment to offer you the very best. There are no guarantees in the cattle business, but here’s one that checks all the boxes in terms of genetics and quality, and the Here I Am calf in her belly could really be something special.

LOVE THE CHROME! This baldy/white socked Merlin daughter will stand out in the crowd. This one has the added dimension of power that it takes to raise twenty-first century show steers. Merlin (Whizard x Irish Whiskey) daughters have really been a mainstay of the Dakota Classic. The Merlin cattle have the generating capacity of his sire, Whizard, with a shot more power that comes from his Irish Whiskey mother. We bred 636 to the sire of champions Fu Man Chu. Expect big things!

AI service sire Getcha Some

DONOR COW DELUXE! Here’s a cow straight from the heart of the donor program. This one has had seven head make the pasture sale the past three years and had three calves sired by Monopoly in the 2018 pasture that brought over $20,000. The Patton cattle have long been known as some of Irish Whiskey’s best descendants, and this Patton daughter is solid built from the ground up. Cattle with this kind of foot size and bone along with this much width and power are hard to find in the world. This mating to the hot Rodgers sire Getcha Some could be an absolute homerun. If you want to add more high selling cattle to your calf crop, here’s a chance to tie into a donor that will take the guesswork out of the equation for you.

POWER! BODY! LOOK! The AJ daughters are flat getting the job done, and this impressive beast will show you why that is. Here’s one that will fly to the forefront of someone’s donor program and get it operating at a level it’s never been at before. B468 is as stout and wide as you can build an animal but yet so athletic when you set her in motion. This is the kind that the Dakota Classic was built around and the kind that makes us excited to get out of bed in the morning to make more of. This year more than ever before these females are bred to go home and generate from year one, and this mating to the hot Rodgers sire Getcha Some is a perfect example of that.

MAINE-ANJOU OPPORTUNITY! This half-blood Maine Predator daughter we fully believe has unlimited upside potential. She has the length, structure, and elegance to raise high percentage and MaineTainer show heifers and yet is stout and heavy structured enough to raise a steer that knocks it out of the park. Her mother, the U834 Machinist cow, is an absolute belly dragging, cow making kind of female that has made her mark in our herd. This is the first time we have AI’d this great young cow; we chose to go steers this time on her and bred her to the hot Rodgers sire Getcha Some. Getcha Some on stout made Maine cows like this one is an absolute homerun. Maternal sister sells as Lot 46.

BIG SHAGGED CERVEZA! Here’s one that will have you looking twice at the catalog. This is one of the shaggiest daughters of Cerveza we have ever seen. 667 is an absolute beast in her build and design. She’s fully equipped with the huge feet and killer running gear and packed with an extra stout punch of power, which comes from that Cerveza bloodline. Cerveza (Irish Whiskey x Chill Factor) has long been known for his contribution of unequalled maternal production and predictability, but you will drive the wheels off the truck to find another one with this much body, power, and mass. We fully believe the Cerveza cows like this were put on this earth to be mated to the Rodgers Getcha Some bull and jumped for joy when the vet said she was bred that way. Here’s a great young cow that will put your program on the map. Maternal sister sells as Lot 59. Daughter sells as Lot 103.

She is an own daughter of the cornerstone sire of our herd and the foundation of the program, Powerline. Powerline daughters flat out work and get the job done, and they mate so well to a variety of breeding choices. We have retained three daughters in the herd out of this proven matron, and this year we finally bred her for a steer to the past Doris high selling sire and Rodgers promotional sire Luke Duke. We think Luke Duke will breed a lot like his daddy, Here I Am. It is really going to work on this cow.

The Whizard cattle mate so well to the bulls that people are using today, and this 364 cow will be no exception. Here’s one that we couldn’t believe that Rob would let us take to the Dakota Classic. She has a bunch of stuff going the right direction. An extra stout, bold ribbed one that has the big paws. This mating to the hot new Rodgers sire Wynne In Doubt will be a match made in heaven. This makes for an awesome recipe for a maternal machine, and this 6026 cow will show you what we’re talking about. 6026 is stacked with Ohlde genetics on both sides of her pedigree. When you take one that is as big bellied and wide constructed as this beast and breed her to Fu Man Chu, it is really going to be something great.

Dakota Classic XV

Our customers know the Vanhove difference… We have always heard great things about Vanhove Cattle. Last spring we made our first bred heifer purchase, and she sure lived up to the Vanhove reputation. She already paid for herself in her first calf, and we have a tank full of embryos to boot, averaging 11 embryos per flush as just a two-year-old! – Cory Schrag

Vanhove Show Cattle had one of the best sets, if not the best set, of cattle in South Dakota out of RCC Bulls. – Wade Rodgers

I have bought cattle from Rob Vanhove for many, many years, and one thing you can always count on when buying offspring from their place is they will feed. That is a huge deal when I am selling them, because I can send Vanhove-bred cattle out the door with confidence that the buyer will not be calling me back and wondering why he has a calf that is not performing…that is a huge positive to me to keep egg off my face. None of us want to sell livestock that don’t perform and meet customers’ expectations. We are all in pursuit of customer satisfaction! – Dave Guyer Of all the places I visited this past summer and fall, the set of calves at Vanhove’s was by far and away the deepest and soundest set. – Todd Caldwell Last fall I traveled to well over 100 different sets of calves selling. I felt Vanhove’s set was the deepest set last fall, hands down, using the same genetics and pedigrees that will be offered in the Dakota Classic. Another interesting fact is that four sire groups had calves sell for $25K or more. Rob’s genetics just flat work to all of today’s “go-to” clubby bulls. – Brad Otto When Brock and I stopped by the 2018 Vanhove pasture sale, there was a silver steer there that we loved the build of, but we couldn’t convince ourselves that he would be big enough for a state fair. We were wrong on this one, because he goes onto win the 2019 South Dakota State Fair. Never under estimate the feeding ability and consistency of Vanhove genetics. – Bob May One of the best sets of calves for a pasture sale. Awesome program! Robbie has it going on. – Tracy Goretska One thing I would say about Rob Vanhove’s cattle is, to sum it up in one word, “consistency.” Year after year, he produces some of the best in the country. You can buy with confidence from Vanhove Cattle and the Dakota Classic. – Travis Otterstad Rob and Sheryl's cattle offer look and power and still boast maternal strength and feed-ability. Whether you’re looking for a donor, a show steer or a herd sire, they always have the goods. – Tim Heckman, Midwest Genetics I’ve done business with Rob and Sheryl for several years. The calves I’ve purchased always were sound, good looking and performed for my customers, and the females never disappoint. Calf raisers that put body, look and power in their calves. When I have bought a cow or bred heifer from Vanhove, they flat out got the job done. – Luke Doris We’ve added several females over the past few years to our program from Rob and Sheryl Vanhove. We’ve found their versatility to adapt to our environment in Oklahoma from South Dakota to be very beneficial in their production. They calve easy, cycle right back, breed easy and raise calves that are always the heaviest in our herd. They’re built right for the times, whether we breed them for show steers or heifers. The females we’ve purchased have most definitely added to our bottom line each year. – Wes and Angela Holland, 177 Ranch

Maternal sib to Lot 52 — second high selling steer in our 2019 pasture sale. Down 4 the Cause Champion Chi and Third Overall, sired by Here I Am

SIMMENTAL POWER! 822 has been one of our absolute favorites since she was born. We have had many chances to sell her, but we looked forward to the opportunity to take her to the bright lights in Canton. She is a registered 3/4-blood Simmental that has as much center body, width and structural quality as any that we have seen. We think that there are so many avenues that you could go with one bred like this. The Simmental breed is hot, and the number of great Simmental purebred bulls is at an all-time high. We like the odds on that route very well. If you do use her first to raise quality seed stock and show heifers, you’re gonna get to wondering if she can raise a show steer and will find this will also be the case, as her mother was bred to Here I Am for the first time this year and raised the second high selling steer in our pasture sale at $34,500, going to Wade Rodgers and shown by the Manning family in Iowa. At his first show, Manning’s steer was Champion Chianina and Third Overall. Full sib to Lot 54 — 2016 South Dakota State Fair Open to the World Steer Show Grand Champion Steer

BIG TIME DONOR OPPORTUNITY! There are times in a person’s life when a situation presents itself, and we have to decide to either charge forward or watch from the sidelines. 802 is one of those situations. We think she offers as much generating power as any club calf cow that was sold or will be sold this season. In an era of most of the high selling steers being line bred Heat Wave descendants and MAB cows which are in demand, we believe you will drive the wheels off the truck to find one any better than this great female. The amount of quality colored cattle that you could make with this factory and the different matings that would have success on her would be endless. 802 had a full brother that won the 2016 Open to the World Steer Show at the South Dakota State Fair. We hope you can make it sale day to see the ground shaking power and quality of this red baldy female. Added bonus is that she sells safe in calf to the hot Rodgers calving ease sire May We All. She will always be your gift that keeps on giving.

Made For You is a Maternal Made x Jupiter son that we purchased in Dave Caffee’s bull sale. We knew when we saw him he was just the bull we needed to breed to our moderate, chubby Powerline cows. We couldn’t be any happier with the outcome. 8046 is exactly what we were hoping for out of this mating. She has a shot of Maternal Made in her to add a little more growth and extension, and the Powerline cow will always keep the big, bold rib and body depth that you’ve come to expect in Dakota Classic bred heifers. 8046 will be a sale highlight! Study the length of body and hip in this great female. We just think when they are built like 8046, there so many breeding options. Bonus on this one is that she’s bred to May We All. Tag: 514C • 3-20-19 • Black • Bull Sire: Ain’t Bluffin • Dam: 514C Powerline

Here’s another Ain’t Bluffin (Maternal Made x Paddy O’Malley) that is sure maternal in the way he is put together. He’s extra soggy bodied and big and bold in his upper rib cage. You will love the long, level, dead square hip in this guy as well. Throw in the fact that he is super soft haired, and this bull is a surefire bet to raise the kind of replacement heifers to take your program to the next level. We think he would work well to raise steer raising mommas or just good, solid, added-value cattle in general.

The Ain’t Bluffin cattle will be in demand in the years to come, and bulls like this one will show you why that is. C538 is a huge bodied, extra chubby, moderate Ain’t Bluffin son. His hip and pin set are as square and wide as they come. He will add extreme value to your replacement heifers and help build your genetic base in your herd. He comes out of a huge ribbed Powerline cow, giving you another shot of maternal genetics. Bulls like this will make you money long term.
