Welcome to the 19 thAnnual Fall Cream of the Crop Sale! Good cattle always have and always will bring a good premium over average cattle! This is one of the highest cattle markets in history, and the experts are saying it’s going to surpass to the all time highest and is predicted to stay good for several years to come. So now it is more important than ever to produce the best you possibly can! The fastest way to do that is to buy the best herd sires and females you can afford to help you achieve your dreams in record time. We believe this set of cattle can help you do just that! This is the largest and most diverse set of cattle we have ever offered in the 19 years of bringing you our “Fall” Cream of the Crop Sale. The quality in this wide, deep bodied and attractive group of cattle is overwhelming. We sure hope you can join us at Black Hereford Ranch Saturday, October 28, 2023. We genuinely believe you too will find them as impressive as we do! I’ve said this before and want to remind you all again that we stand behind our cattle as good as or better than anyone else in this highly competitive business we are in. These cattle are truly the type and kind that you can take home with confidence that they will add value to your next calf crop.

I want to thank my wife, Gay. She has truly had my back in this operation for 36 years. She’s the one who makes the lists and checks ’em twice. As she says, she shoulda bought stock in Post-it® Notes when she married me. One cold, icy winter day in early 1991, we were gathering up show steers in Iowa and discussing needing a name for our first Texas steer sale to be held in March 1991. Gay said, “Well, I guess we will bring people the Cream of the Crop, and 32 years later we are still striving to bring you the “Cream of the Crop.” As I’ve told you all before, I have the best mother- and father-in-law I coulda asked for. They were there in 1991 helping at the very first Cream of the Crop Steer Sale in Abilene, Texas, and they are still here today helping. Thank you, Mema and Pepa! It takes a lot to pull these sales off, and we are grateful for every one of our crew—Dustin Dunford, Jacob Cervantes, Dick Moler, Jimmy Hoffman, Brad Hook and many more. Heck, we are even blessed that Aunt Gena makes her way from East Texas to help sale week. Last but definitely not least, we owe a big thank you to Tiffani Pruitt and to Jill Otterstad (Southwest TypeStyles) for all their time and patience with us (the catalog is a major undertaking)! We are especially grateful for all of our returning customers and all the first time buyers! I love good cattle, and I love hearing about the success each of you have had and continue to have with Cream of the Crop offspring! I wish you all much success,

Kris Black

FALL CREAM OF THE CROP BULL & BRED FEMALE SALE | 2 | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2023…CRAWFORD, OKLAHOMA

FEMALE BREEDING GUARANTEE

Terms of sale are cash, check or wire transfer, payable to Black Hereford Ranch at the conclusion of the auction. Animals are not released to leave until paid for in full.

Safe in calf females have been examined by our veterinarians. All females declared safe in calf will have a projected calving date or date range printed on the sale day supplement. All projected due dates are best estimates only and not guaranteed. Please remember that it is normal to give birth throughout the two weeks either side of their projected due date. If a pregnant female proves to be open by a licensed veterinarian within 30 days of this sale and is returned to the seller within 45 days at the buyer’s expense, the buyer may choose between a full credit refund or may choose to keep the female with an $800 refund adjustment.

BULL BREEDING GUARANTEE All bulls in this offering have been fertility and trichomoniasis tested by our veterinarian, Scott Sturgeon, D.V.M., and are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of a) injury or disease occurring after the time of sale; or b) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser. Any bull that settles cows by natural service is considered a breeder.

RETAINED INTEREST IN BULLS

PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT We insure the cattle we purchase and highly recommend that you do the same. After the gavel slams, they are your responsibility. We will take great care of your cattle until they are loaded and leave BHR. We highly recommend these agents for livestock mortality insurance: James F. Bessler, LLC — Jim Bessler (815) 762-2641 InsureYourCattle.com — Jimmy James (580) 481-0955; Jace James (580) 481-0927

Ownership: Unless otherwise stated, we are selling full possession, full salvage value and 2/3 revenue sharing semen interest in bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control as to how you want to handle him, as well as 100% of the salvage value of the bull. We are retaining 1/3 revenue-sharing semen interest. This simply gives us the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue from the bull, if at some time in the future semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to anyone else, Black Hereford Ranch retains our semen interest and revenue sales. If a buyer is not interested in marketing the semen from a bull, then Black Hereford Ranch reserves the right to collect a semen bank on the bull at our cost and the buyer’s convenience within a timely manner. That semen would be 100% owned by Black Hereford Ranch for our use or marketing.

RETAINED INTEREST IN FEMALES

Realistically speaking, the reason Black Hereford Ranch retains an interest in every bull is that we want to keep it simple, and we have great bulls throughout the offering. The bulls that do develop a market for larger amounts of semen can be very financially rewarding; therefore, as a breeder of some of the best seed stock in the industry, we want to share with you in these bulls. Even bulls that aren’t originally promoted can become popular at a later time, especially after calf crops prove successful. We want to be a great partner with you.

These 18-month-old bulls can be used with great success, but we recommend to turn out one cow per bull’s month of age for best results. These young bulls are still growing and losing their teeth and may need a little extra care at the end of their first breeding season.

Semen Rights: Buyers receive semen rights proportionally to the interest that is purchased. A 1/3 semen interest, and 1/3 of all semen sales, is retained on all bulls unless otherwise stated in the catalog or supplement sheet or announced from the block the day of the sale. Therefore, if you purchase 2/3 revenue sharing semen interest, you are entitled to 2/3 of the collection semen cost provided that you indicate that you want semen prior to collection. Future semen collections must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. The collections and cost will be divided according to each owner’s interest, unless otherwise agreed upon mutually by all owners prior to collection of said semen.

Black Hereford Ranch RETAINS THE RIGHT TO PARTNER ON TWO SUCCESSFUL FLUSHES ON ALL COC FEMALES. A successful flush is defined as producing at least four eggs per partner. If you sell the female to anyone else, Black Hereford Ranch still retains our right to partner on two successful flushes. If a buyer is not interested in flushing the female, then Black Hereford Ranch reserves the right to two successful flushes on the female at our cost and the buyer’s convenience within a timely manner.

FUTURE HEALTH CARE RECOMMENDATIONS The stress of hauling and relocating your COC purchases can weaken their immune system, so we recommend keeping a good eye on them daily for the two weeks after you get them home. See page 39 for our complete herd health protocol.

BLACK HEREFORD RANCH RESERVES THE RIGHT TO COLLECT DNA FOR CLONING PURPOSES ON ALL CATTLE WE SELL.

45 years in the making!

Since 1978 When Kris was in the first grade, his grandfather Frank “Shorty” Gilliland gave him a purebred Polled Hereford heifer. Kris kept the females as replacements, and by the time he graduated, he had a small group of cows that were the original foundation of what is now Black Hereford Ranch. Shorty’s family homesteaded the acreage that was previously the Gilliland Hereford Ranch for G.L. and Shorty Gilliland. One of the original homes still remains in use today as a ranch house. Neighbors tell stories of helping Shorty load his tack and cattle onto train cars, riding with the cattle, traveling to shows as far off as the World Beef Expo in Kentucky. They put on a number of Polled Hereford production sales over the years. Unfortunately due to health reasons, Shorty had to disperse most of his cow herd. The year Kris graduated, Shorty had a stroke that left him handicapped. Kris put a halt to college plans and moved to Crawford to work for Shorty until his passing a few years later. Kris began outcrossing Herefords and keeping heifers to build his cow herd. Two years later, he had a Houston Champion Hereford followed by a Tulsa Reserve Grand Champion Steer with a Hereford. He continued to add color to his crop, and in 1993 he had a black baldy Power Plant son that was Reserve Grand at Houston, raised by our late friend Frank Johnson. In 1994, Frank bought a Power Plant x Chi cow and called Kris to ask what to breed her to…a year later, Habanero was born. They were our first to break the $20,000 barrier, and 28 years later Habanero is still making a direct impact.

LOTS 1–125

This is the largest and most diverse group of wide bodied, stout built, sound movin’ herd sire candidates that we’ve brought you in 19 years of Fall Cream of the Crop Sales. It will be well worth the trip to Crawford. If you’re looking for a good, herd improving herd sire, you’ll find a bunch of them you’ll like in our 19th Annual Fall Sale. They are so diverse in about every breed or color. Most have what it takes to sire champion-caliber show steers, some are maternal at its best—the kind to build a good cow herd around, and a lot of them will do both as successfully as you’ll find anywhere. If you’re breeding heifers, there are four really good-looking low birth weight first-time heifer bulls. We’ve culled them hard for structure and soundness, and most have a real good temperament. They have topof-the-line dams and granddams backing them for generations, and that’s a must in our opinion. It helps them be more consistent breeders of high quality offspring and their daughters making you a good calfraising cow. They have not been fed hard, just grown out to where they are ready to go to work as soon as you get ’em home. They’ve been tested for everything, vaccinated and we’ll stand behind them as good as or better than anyone else in the business.

We have been fortunate to sell some pretty prestigious Hereford show steer sires over the years. Made Right, Carpe Diem and Easy Jett are probably the most famous, but there are more, like Highway 33, Battleship, Burnin’ Daylight, Shotgun and many others that have had their start at BHR and wear the COC prefix. We think our 2023 lead off Hereford bull, “Home Run,” is the type and kind and has the power in the blood to knock it out of the park! Home Run is one of the most perfect built future Hereford show steer sires to go through this program in several years. His dam, granddam and great-granddam have all been valuable donors for BHR. His COC Tiger-sired great-granddam has produced over $400,000 for Clark, Shackelford and BHR. His COC Shotgun-sired granddam has a full sister at Clark’s that has produced over $100K. His COC Outer Limits-sired dam has over $70K in sales to her credit at BHR. His COC Carpe Diemsired sire, COC BH H12, bred by Bradley Hale, has sired his fair share of champions and needs no introduction. His maternal brothers sell as Lots 2 and 3. Terms: Selling 1/2 possession, 1/2 semen interest and 1/2 semen sales with alternating years of possession. Buyer has the option to double down to own full possession and 2/3 semen interest.

Sired by a full brother to Lot 6 & paternal brother to Lot 7

This is your chance to own a full brother to COC Battleship Arizona. Sired by the amazing COC Battleship, who is deceased and whose very limited semen supply is basically gone. He left us way too early with very little semen and proved to be a valuable sire of champion Hereford show steers. COC Battleship Arizona is also proving to be a valuable breeding piece. His undefeated son, bred and sold by partner Kevin Newman and shown by Jerzee Harlan, was Champion Hereford in both rings at Plainview and Fifth Overall plus Champion Hereford in both rings at the Golden Spread Classic in Levelland and Reserve Grand Overall. Battleship Arizona and Lot 6’s beautiful, very potent dam was Larry Kieschnick’s Lot 354 pick from the COC bred Hereford heifers in our 2013 sale and is now his Donor 175.

Lot 6

When I first laid eyes on Battleship Arizona at Kieschnick’s, I knew Larry had raised a good one. This is one of his first sons born and to sell as a coming two-year-old herd sire. He’s dense muscled, stout, good looking and plenty good moving. Looks like a Champion Hereford show steer maker and is a paternal brother to Newman’s incredible undefeated Battleship Arizona son that is going to be hard to get around at the majors next spring.

As stated on Lot 2, we flushed IVF on four of our all-time best older Hereford donors to an $1,800 straw of Who Maker, the great looking, great built registered Hereford bull that shelled out the good ones but unfortunately died early in his career with little semen stored—his semen got expensive for a reason. These sons will all make great daughters and easy-to-sell sons. With 100 lbs. from picture time to sale time, this bull could be the pick of ’em all. That’s what his $30,000 high selling maternal brother COC Astro did, he exploded from picture time to sale time. He wasn’t even pictured that year, but did he ever turn it on and look good. The Floyds took him home that year. A maternal brother to the fixin’to-be household name COC Raised Right, Lot 10 is snake necked with plenty of belly and has the good muscle shape and structure. Their dam has been shelling out top enders for the last 13 years. Check out his maternal sisters—Lots 140 and 141 are amazing.

From approximately 11,000 head of breeding stock that have traveled through our sale ring, some of the leaders in this industry have had their start right here in Crawford, Oklahoma. In return, we are grateful for the opportunity to help our customers market their cattle to their maximum potential. We are here to help you make a good profit from your COC purchases, or to help in any way that we can. Please let us know how we can assist you.

Hereford influence

Lots 15 and 16 The Lots 15 and 16 Hereford bulls are both sired by a stout, impressive purebred 2296 son that Kevin Jensen called and told me about. He said that he found me a Hereford show steer sire while he was judging the Black Hills Stock Show in South Dakota. He was an eyecatching, moderate sized, stout built, nice bull. We like both of these nice sized, sound as ever, very attractive sons.

FALL CREAM OF THE CROP BULL & BRED FEMALE SALE | 12 | SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2023…CRAWFORD, OKLAHOMA

We’re going from an amazing set of Hereford bulls to the purebred Charolais division, and we’re starting this awesome group with what may be the best sire group from any sire that we’ve had in a COC sale. COC 19-361 “Major Impact” was our high-selling bull in our 2021 summer sale to Rick Beard. I thought he was the best purebred Charolais bull we had ever sold and still do. You should see him now as a four-year-old. I encourage you to take the time while you’re here to lay your eyes on him. He’s moderate, massive, sound with great eye appeal and out of one of the best Fire Water x HooDoo cows you’ll see anywhere. We’ve had the privilege to sell some very influential Charolais bulls over the years, and I just named this one “Major Impact.” I’m certain he’ll live up to his name. Lots 20–34 are the from first calf crop from COC 19-361 Major Impact. Some are better than others, but from top to bottom I sure think they’re all extra good built with extra body capacity, big hips and tops, super eye appeal and have amazing structure and mobility. Of a total of 17 spring 2022 bull calves born, only two went to the sale barn. They’re all out of good purebred Charolais cows. I can't wait to get a bunch of “Major Impact” calves out of clubby cows. He has “champion caliber slick shear sire” written all over him, and these leading sons do too!

He is an embryo purchased by Emma Hickey from M6 Ranch, and his dam was a leading donor for M6. She’s also the dam of COC Free Bird (who sired COC Fire Bird and COC Newman Red Bird), COC Judge.410, COC Brutus, COC No Spin Zone and many more herd sires working in progressive club calf herds across the country. COC Donor 410 is also responsible for sale topping females, like the dam of the $175,000 MCF Rock Star and two $100,000 COC Club member producing COC Troubadour daughters. COC Donor 410’s outstanding dam, COC Donor 9970, is responsible for starting this tribe and is a COC $100,000 Club member who played a big roll in BHR success. He has his daddy’s tremendous power, big bone and hip and a ripped top with an extra sized mid-section that a tremendous slick shearing producer needs.

I am probably silly for not waiting til June 2024 to sell this amazing, big time slick shearing future champion show steer maker, but I just couldn’t resist offering you this COC Yellow Jacket grandson that I absolutely think is one of the very best to go through our program. It will be worth the drive to Crawford just to see him, but there are over 100 more we’re selling and there aren’t just a few you’ll like—there’s a bunch. American enthusiasts even need to pay attention here!

Ricky Gray has been a longtime friend and a believer in our program longer than about any other COC customer. He’s been taking a lot of our high selling top bulls, and his kids showed our heifers growing up. This COC Open Range is one of my favorites from this stout offering. Ricky was also a semen interest owner in COC Yellow Jacket, who is COC Open Range’s sire. COC Banshee was a $28,000 high seller the year he sold and is the sire of this stud’s dam. COC Banshee contributed to Ricky’s outstanding set of cows!

Yellow Jacket influence

COC Yellow Jacket has been shelling out champions and high sellers all over the country for almost 20 years. The reason he’s still in such big demand is that his daughters are top producers of high quality progeny, and he can still sire champion caliber show steers and bulls that do the same, like his favorite son, Open Range.

If you like ’em whale bellied, easy keeping and great moving and have a cool bull to put on her, she’ll make your bull look good. She comes by her looks honestly. Her dam is also a moose and has been shelling out good stuff for 10 years. Fire Bird has all the power you’ll find in a stout structured herd bull. A maternal sister to Lot 161. Really complete built and really sweet necked with plenty of hip and top. Her 12-year-old dam has been a good producer.

KBC Taz, born in 1995, is the maternal grandsire of Heat Wave. Our Taz daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters are still phenomenal producers. Just think what all that Taz daughter that produced Heat Wave deserves credit for. We see a lot of guys in this business only studying the top side of pedigrees, only referencing parts of pedigrees for shorthand, but we all realistically know the KBC Taz 9521E power there is on the bottom side of Double half-blood Maine (AMAA 247463) pedigrees. Without that good Taz cow, would there have been a Heat Wave? Without a Heat Wave, would there have been a Monopoly, or the masses of other name brand Heat Wave sons? There’s a lot of credit due to the cow families that get the job done and have made this industry what it is!

COC

HooDoos

For 10 consecutive years we made the trip to Cody, Wyoming, where George Brown allowed us the opportunity to have first pick of nearly 20,000 weaned heifer calves on the HooDoo Ranch. We got to hand pick out of 2,000 heifer calves a year, but there was never one quite like HooDoo Phylli. She was the stoutest of the 1,500 we bought and brought back to Crawford. She is the dam of Yellow Jacket, Polar Ice, J10 and many other outstanding progeny.

HooDoo Phylli

The HooDoos ultimately influenced the turning point in the show steer industry from a black-hided world to the big surge of yellows, smokes and whites. Among others, Cream of the Crop HooDoo females have produced: 2004 Houston Grand Steer, 2006 San Antonio Grand Steer, 2007 San Antonio Grand Steer, 2009 Houston Grand Steer, 2011 Houston Reserve Grand Steer, 2015 Houston Grand Steer, 2016 Houston Reserve Grand Steer and 2016 San Antonio Reserve Grand Steer plus countless breed champions at the toughest shows in the country. You won’t find HooDoo genetics offered in volume anywhere else like in our COC sales.

Her first calf was a backward c-section, but she hasn’t skipped a beat since then. The COC clean up herd sires she’s bred to are second to none.

While I was in Houston at the steer show, I ran out to good COC customers Lukas and Luke Chachere’s ranch to see their cattle. They’ve taken several of our best back to their progressive operation with great results. This great structured three-year-old HL That’s Right daughter was my pick of their 2020 heifer calves. She’s powerful from front to back and top to bottom and has a good producing dam. Her Lovin’ Size baby next spring should cheapen her up a lot and should be way better than good.

Lot 212 This Yellow Jacket granddaughter is a moose. If you like ’em extra stout and good on the go, she’ll be at the top of your wish list. She really needs a “Deep and Wide Load” sign on her. Also in the pedigree is COC Troubadour’s granddam, COC Donor 9970. Both 0104 and 9970 are $100,000 COC Club members. If you’re really serious about finding you a high powered, great built, giant middled, amazing SimAngus cow that has a tremendous mother and can go anywhere and fit right into the top of anybody’s ET program, then you better take a good look at this beauty. Buy her, take her home and multiply her in volume. We AI’d her to one of the best 1/2 Simmental, 1/2 Angus bulls you’ll see anywhere, and that mating will be fantastic. I am really not very smart for not already seeing what Here I Am can do to her. I bet you take one look and say there’s no way that won’t work!

Eugene and Scott Fullwood have been longtime friends and COC customers. We sure miss Eugene being at our COC sales! The Fullwood boys have taken some of the very best back to Roscoe, like the jam up good $23,000 COC Battleship son this leading lady is bred to; I’m thinking there’s a good chance she has you the world’s greatest Hereford show calf next spring! Lot 244 was a high seller to Fullwood in the fall 2020 sale. Her full brother went to Gerhardt for $10,000, her maternal brother was an $8,000 Loaded Up son, and her 14-year-old granddam’s exciting Loaded Up of Dolly son sells as Lot 97. Her second calf was a $7,500 high seller for Scott. She has worked successfully in his ET program, and he has lots of embryos stored up, so he brought her back to Crawford to let someone else share her wealth. Make sure you look at her video. She is very pleasing to the eye and should’ve been pictured. Another one that is in the prime of her production and will fit right in the top of anyone’s donor program.

I’m pretty illiterate when it comes to these Americans. I guess I’ve gotten lucky sometimes, and sometimes luck is better than smarts. I bought a powerhouse of a Simbrah cow in one of Doc Warner’s sales, and this COC Warner Donor 52 has really made me look like I might have a clue about Americans. Somebody can make a superstar out of this thing, I’m 100% sure of that. She is ground pounding major stout with more American character than this pic shows. I really hate to see her leave this place.
