Raise your own champions!

Welcome to Black Hereford Ranch’s 13th Annual Fall Cream of the Crop Sale T hank you for taking the time to go through this offering. I know what our mailbox looks like this time of year, and you can spend

more time than you have sorting through catalogs, hundreds of online sales and can wear out a new pickup looking for quality herd bulls or females. Now more than ever is the time to invest in a top notch herd bull or bred female in order to keep your program moving forward. This is one of the best sets of bulls and females that we have ever produced, and we are excited to share them with you. Please stop by the ranch any time from now til sale day and inspect them. We are confident that you’ll find many of them that will fit your liking. They’re deep, wide, sound, packing plenty of muscle and will prove to be valuable additions to any herd. Many of them are ETs out of our old, proven, best producing donors. We are also selling the very tops from our good customers’ programs that have put our genetics to work with great success. When you buy from us, you’re investing in your program’s future and gaining friends who will help you merchandise your offspring, just like we do our own. Raising and selling champion caliber show steers, and offering the females and bulls that produce them, has been our only business since 1978. We are a fourth-generation family operation. We have no rich uncles, no booming oil wells, no wind turbines, no side jobs, and we don’t play the lottery. This is our livelihood and our only business. You can rest assured that you’re dealing with an outfit that stands behind what we sell 100%. It’s a pleasure to see our Cream of the Crop cattle perform highly for our customers. We invest a lot of money, time and hard work and believe our job is to help you increase your profitability. We are dedicated to your success and want to help you Raise Your Own Champions!

We don’t keep the best and sell the rest. We offer you our all. There’s not many others in this business who can truthfully say that. There are many real good cattle of all sizes, colors, looks and builds, and we’re certain that you’ll be able to find a good one you can afford that’ll fit the mold of what you’re looking for. Most of the bulls selling are 18 to 19 months old, with the exception of eight of the elite, mature end of our 2016 fall-born bulls. They’ve all passed an in-depth semen and trich test, have been TH, PHA and PI BVD tested and are ready to go anywhere for heavy service this fall. The 38 bred April and May calving bred heifers selling are the top end of our 70 we bred this summer. You can expect high quality of all breeds and colors. Several have the look and genetics to prove them donor worthy. If you don’t have spring calvers, here is your chance for a quick return on investment. Calve them out next spring, flush them next summer and breed them back in the fall to fit your fall breeding programs. We don’t just turn your average run of the mill, low birth weight heifer bulls out. We hunt hard and spend a small fortune on Registered Angus and Red Angus bulls that are built right for this business without sacrificing calving ease. We not only understand as well as anyone the importance of smooth calving but also how much weighs on the quality of your calf crop. We have done our best to give you that opportunity the first crack off the bat with these females. It has been an age-old debate on what a good herd bull or female is worth. Everyone’s budgets and goals vary so that it makes it tough to put a number on them. However, we have many customers who can testify that there are good cattle at bargain prices throughout the entirety of this sale, if you do your homework. Many cattle in the past have proven to pay for themselves within their first calf crop. If you haven’t ever joined us for a Cream of the Crop Sale, I encourage you to. Even if you aren’t shopping for a herd addition, swing by…we won’t charge you to look around. We can guarantee you won’t leave disappointed. This is an exciting time to be in this industry. Over the past 39 years we’ve watched as this business has grown and advanced. We have been blessed to be able to produce deep quality cattle in volume to share with our customers through Cream of the Crop sales. We owe a pile of gratitude to our longterm, repeat customers; many of you have turned into our closest friends, and we thank you! If you can’t make the trip to see this set for yourselves, give me a call and let’s visit. Describe what you’re looking for and I’ll help you pick the ones that suit your needs and guarantee you’ll be satisfied when they pull in your driveway or you won’t own them. We stand behind these cattle as good as or better than anyone and want to set you up to be successful with them. If you are unable to be with us sale day but would like to watch along and place bids, then we have a couple different routes to accommodate you. The sale will be broadcast live on Superior; if you would like to register to bid through them, they can help you over the phone and on the internet. You can also reach one of us to set up absentee bidding and to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to this sale all year long, and having the chance to visit with friends new and old makes for a good time. We hope you will join us Sunday night to eat and inspect the offering, and come back for lunch with us at the sale on Monday, October 30th! If you have any questions or if we can ever help you in any way, please don’t hesitate to let us know. Last but not least, don’t forget to pray for the USA!

Black Hereford Ranch Breeding Guarantee & Retained Interest Policy BULL BREEDING GUARANTEE All bulls in this offering have been fertility & trich tested by our veterinarian and are guaranteed to be breeders, with the exception of a) injury or disease occurring after the time of sale; b) gross negligence or willful misconduct on the part of the purchaser. Any bull that settles cows by natural service is considered a breeder. No guarantee is given regarding the ability to freeze semen, but most all will freeze semen.

FEMALE BREEDING GUARANTEE Safe in calf females have been examined by our veterinarians. All females declared safe in calf have the projected number of days bred on the day of preg check in this catalog or on sale day supplement. Projected due dates are best estimates only and not guaranteed. Please remember that it is normal to give birth throughout the two weeks either side of their projected due date. A very small percentage of bred females are found to come open after they have preg checked bred. If any bred female is found to be open by a competent veterinarian by November 30, 2017. After the female is returned to Black Hereford Ranch within 60 days of the sale, we will credit you 100% of the purchase price through any 2018 COC sale.

RETAINED INTEREST IN BULLS Unless otherwise stated in the catalog, we are selling full possession, full salvage value and 2/3 revenue sharing semen interest. This means the bull is totally in your control on how you want to handle him as well as 100% of the salvage value of the bull. We are retaining 1/3 revenuesharing semen interest. This simply gives us the right to 1/3 of the semen sales revenue from the bull if at sometime in the future semen sales become a possibility. If a buyer is not interested in marketing the semen from a bull, then Black Hereford Ranch reserves the right to collect a semen bank on the bull at our cost and the buyer’s convenience within a timely manner. That semen would be 100% owned by Black Hereford Ranch for our use or marketing. If you sell the bull

to anyone else, Black Hereford Ranch retains our semen interest on that bull. Realistically speaking, we are keeping an interest in every bull because we want to keep it simple and have great bulls throughout the entire offering. The bulls that do develop a market for larger amounts of semen can be very financially rewarding; therefore, as a breeder of some of the best seed stock in the industry, we want to share with you in these bulls. Even bulls that aren’t originally promoted can become popular at a later time, especially after calf crops prove successful. We want to be a great partner with you. Semen Rights: Buyers receive semen rights proportionally to the interest that you purchased. 1/3 semen interest is retained on all bulls unless otherwise stated in the catalog or supplement sheet or announced from the block the day of the sale. Therefore, if you purchase 2/3 revenue sharing semen interest, you are entitled to 2/3 of the collection semen cost provided that you indicate that you want semen prior to collection. Future semen collections must be made known to all owners prior to collecting. The collections and cost will be divided according to each owner’s interest, unless otherwise agreed upon mutually by all owners prior to collection of said semen. However, if at any time you decide to sell your purchased bull and semen interest, Black Hereford Ranch still retains their semen interest and the right to collect DNA for cloning purposes.

RETAINED INTEREST IN FEMALES Black Hereford Ranch retains the right to partner on two successful flushes on all COC females. A successful flush is defined as producing at least four embryos per partner; therefore, we are retaining at least eight embryos total on each female. If a buyer is not interested in flushing the female, then Black Hereford Ranch reserves the right to two successful flushes on the female at our cost and the buyer’s convenience within a timely manner. If at any time you decide to sell the female, Black Hereford Ranch still retains the right to partner on two successful flushes and the right to collect DNA for cloning purposes.

PRICE RANGES There will be many cattle selling in this sale that will fit most anyone’s price range and budget. Last year the bulls averaged $6,000, and the females averaged a little over $4,000. However, there are good cattle that bring in the $2,500 to $3,500 range that you will be proud of when you get them home and that will help improve the quality of your herd. Our best advice? Do your homework. There are many bargains in every Cream of the Crop Sale that pay for themselves within their first calf crop…and some even wind up in our success stories.

FREE BIRD SON

Real stout, good lookin’, big hipped and rugged built, just like his sire and grandsire. He’s out of a killer lookin’ double bred Habanero cow who is pretty special. This Free Bird is good necked and cool lookin’ with cow power out the wazoo. There’s promotability money to be made here!

Free Bird sire of Lots 1–3 9808 wrt | White | 4.4.16 | Horned S: Free Bird (Lead On x Donor 410 [WG x Donor 9970]) | D: Yellow Jacket x Shamrock (Junior x Maine Break)

When we say our cattle are engineered to be the champion making kind…good looking, wide bodied, sound and packing plenty of muscle, it is because their sire and dams are backed by generations of this kind. When that is all they are hardwired with, it makes them produce consistently. This year’s Lot 1 is a prime example of how this works, and here are some of the genetics that he has had bred into him for generations. Sire COC Free Bird The $36,000 Lead On son and full brother to COC Troubadour. Troubadour sired the 2014 Grand Steer at San Antonio, 2011 Belt Buckle Bonanza Champion Prospect, plus countless other high sellers and champions from coast to coast. He sires amazing females that are tremendous producers. For example, MCF’s new highly promoted $175,000-valued Rock Star is out of a good full sister to Free Bird. Brandon Bird has Free Bird hard at work in his program, and we are all excited about his his progeny. Paternal grandsire Lead On Sire of Free Bird, Troubadour and 18 other full sibs that have averaged almost $15,000. Lead On sired the 2006 Grand Steer at Houston. Paternal granddam COC Donor 410 Dam of Free Bird. Sired by WG and well over the $300,000 mark in progeny sales. She is also the dam of Lot 6. Paternal great-grandsire COC WG One of the first PB Charolais bulls we used. He sired many outstanding females for us, including Donor 410, Donor 223 and Donor 7684, the dam of Lot 7. Paternal great-granddam COC Donor 9970 Over the $100,000 mark in direct sales, including our 2016 $21,000 high selling bred heifer. She is the dam of Donor 410, Donor 7684 and many other high sellers. At 18 years of age, she is still producing within our donor program. Dam’s sire COC Yellow Jacket Sired by Lifeline. Yellow Jacket sired the 2011 Fort Worth Reserve Grand Steer, 2016 Denver Reserve Grand Steer, 2016 Fort Worth Reserve Grand Steer, 2016 Houston Grand Steer, 2011 Iowa State Fair and Iowa Beef Expo Supreme Grand Heifer, Exit 174, $82,000 Unfinished Business, $40,000 half interest Moxie and many more progeny bringing over $50,000. Maternal granddam HooDoo Phylli Dam of Yellow Jacket, Polar Ice, J10 and over $100,000 in progeny sales. She is the only female we have cloned to date and was the stoutest HooDoo ever made. Maternal grandsire COC Lifeline Sire of Yellow Jacket and was sired by COC Habanero. Lifeline sired six Grands and Reserve Grands at Houston, San Antonio and Austin. Maternal great-grandsire COC Habanero Sire of COC Lifeline and COC Junior. Habanero was our high seller in 1996 at $24,000. He sired the 2003 Houston Grand Steer. His daughters are still some of the best in the country. A Habanero daughter produced the COC 2014 OKC Grand. He is still the hairiest creature we’ve had on our place. Maternal great-grandsire COC Shamrock is sired by COC Junior, and COC Junior is sired by COC Habanero. They combined have produced six Grand or Reserve Grand steers at Houston, San Antonio and Austin. How’s that for “power in the blood?” FALL CREAM OF THE CROP BULL & BRED HEIFER SALE | 4 | MONDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2017…CRAWFORD, OKLAHOMA

COC TROUBADOUR

Troubadour Sire of Lots 4 & 5

Troubadour has proven time and time again to make tremendous sons and daughters—the kind we’re all striving to produce. He is deceased and very little semen still exists on him. As you will see in the surrounding pages, his daughters are some of the very best champion producers you’ll find anywhere. He consistently stamps them with unmistakable class and style. His sons have proven to take the heat as champion caliber show steers and bulls that produce the kind that make people want to get in this business, like Lots 1 and 2 last fall. Dr. Dave Duello purchased Lot 1, Hoss, our high seller through this sale last fall. We AI’d, flushed and cleaned up to Hoss last fall and are loving the calves we now have on the ground. Hoss was a favorite of Duello’s customers while he had him turned out this summer, and we are excited to share his first calf crop with you this coming spring. We also flushed and AI’d to last fall’s Lot 2, Renegade, and his calves are exciting. We can’t wait to breed back to these two powerhouses and AI to many of their paternal brothers in this offering. Troubadour’s outstanding dam has produced over $300,000 in progeny sales. Troubadour stamps them with an unmistakable style.

This 60 lb. birth weight halfblood Brahman is sired by our all time, late, great, best all around sire, Troubadour. This one will make you want to get in the Brahman business. This bull is real good looking, extremely sound, very docile and hard to pick a hole in. He has a big, level top with a big, square hip and has the right kind of muscle. He’s one you will really love in person. His dam is a real stout, moderate sized PB gray Brahman. With Troubadour deceased and semen non-existent, these sons will carry the torch and be the cross that American breeders have been hunting for. 180 wrt | Smoke Brahman | 4.14.16 | Scurred S: Troubadour (Lead On x Donor 410 [WG x Donor 9970]) | D: PB Gray Brahman

If you’ve received our catalogs in the past, you’ll probably remember Lot 5’s full sister who was on the front cover of our 2014 Female Sale catalog and highlighted that sale. She is phenomenal and one not easily forgotten. This Troubadour son is good necked, good bellied, wide based and very sound. He’s out of a real stout PB HooDoo donor that has done a tremendous job for us. Maternal brother sells as Lot 31.

9970/410/7684 COW FAMILY If you’re looking for a good red herd bull, you seriously better come look at this one. He’s good necked, real cool lookin’, sound movin’, good bellied, moderate and stout built. He is still green but will take a picture as a mature bull that you’ll be proud to promote. The 9970/410/7684 Cow Family We don’t do a near good enough job promoting or praising our donors, but we owe so much to the cows that have helped build us. Troubadour’s cow family has been nothing short of a blessing for us. They are potent. Donor 9970 resides in our ET program at 18 years of age and is still producing. At age 17, 9970 produced a high selling bred heifer at $21,000. She has been truly tremendous. John Sullivan purchased Donor 410 sight unseen in 2006 for $8,000. Eleven years later, she is well over the $300,000 mark in progeny sales, with her sisters marching right along behind her. This cow family is truly second to none in our books. 547 bcoc | Smoke | May 2015 | Polled S: Lil Man (Troubadour x Yellow Jacket) | D: Frost Proof x Troubadour

This one will make great chubby females and bull progeny. He is huge, soggy bodied, moderate, as sound as they come and built right. His dam is what typical Frost Proof and Troubadour daughters are—good lookin’ and good producing. You will be seeing them both in pedigrees for years to come. These are two of the last from the late Lil Man that we will ever be able to offer, and he’s going out with a bang. Lil Man sired our Lot 19 last fall, a Troubadour x Yellow Jacket that sold to K-Sis Cattle Co. to use in their American program and have great reviews about his calves this fall.

Do you know? When you’re looking through the dozens of sale catalogs and thousands of online sales that go on weekly, if you see Yellow Jacket, Made Right, Troubadour, Lifeline, Habanero, Carpe Diem and many others, then you’re looking at descendants of our genetics. A good one can start a fire. For instance, one of ours that forever impacted the club calf industry was a double halfblood Maine bull that we bred, sold and called “Taz,” just like so many others that got their start here at BHR. Taz sired Heat Wave’s dam. Just sit back and think about all that Heat Wave has done in the club calf world and how many pedigrees he is in now. Without Taz, there wouldn’t be a Heat Wave, Monopoly, Man Among Boys, Walks Alone, Solid Gold or the thousands of their sons and daughters down the line. It is mind boggling how far good genetics can carry on, and it’s our goal to put ours to work doing just that.

HooDoos

the HooDoo Phylli

For 10 consecutive years we made the trip to Cody, Wyoming, where George Brown allowed us the opportunity to have first pick of nearly 20,000 weaned heifer calves on the HooDoo Ranch. We got to hand pick out of 2,000 heifer calves a year, but there was never one quite like HooDoo Phylli. She was the stoutest of the 1,500 we bought and brought back to Crawford. She is the dam of Yellow Jacket, Polar Ice, J10 and many other outstanding progeny. The HooDoos ultimately influenced the turning point in the show steer industry—from a black-hided world to the big surge of yellows, smokes and whites. Cream of the Crop HooDoo females have produced: 2004 Houston Grand Steer, 2006 San Antonio Grand Steer, 2007 San Antonio Grand Steer, 2009 Houston Grand Steer, 2011 Houston Reserve Grand Steer, 2015 Houston Grand Steer, 2016 Houston Reserve Grand Steer and 2016 San Antonio Reserve Grand Steer plus countless breed champions at the toughest shows in the country.

At 12 years of age, she’s still the one that catches your eye out of the group. To this day, she remains one of our top three favorite PB HooDoo females out of the 20,000 that we sorted through over the ten years we made the trip to Wyoming. She’s done us a good job. SPRING BRED HEIFER DIVISION

Huge boned with a big, square hip, very attractive and moves as good as they get. She has lots of width going away from you and is out of a good COC Mr. Driven daughter that Fullwood purchased from us in 2012. That same year, we had eight Texas Twister steers in one flush average $20,000 out of our good Yellow Jacket daughter, the African Queen donor.

I really hate to part with this big bodied, cool necked Troubadour daughter. Her paternal sisters are making real good looking, tremendous producers. If you don’t have a Troubadour daughter in your lineup, finding one someone is willing to part with is becoming very rare, but we always offer you our all. Thumb through the Troubadour group of bulls at the front of the catalog, and you will catch a glimpse of the influence this family has had on the industry. Lot 2 Renegade, a Troubadour x 5088, topped our sale last fall to Lehne Farms, and half-interest in his full sister cracked the bat as Lot 1 this summer. You will love how this one looks and produces.

Big, big bodied and very moderate sized with a slick shearing top. She’s built to raise a slick shearing champion. Bold N Gold has sired several champions and high sellers on a limited number of progeny. Top and bottom COC bred by Ricky and Sierra Gray.

Here is a halfblood sired by the biggest bodied, easiest keepin’ Red Angus bull in the country…we bred heifers to him. This one’s mother is your typical good producin’, good made Troubadour granddaughter. This is a good haired, big, deep bodied, thick made, easy keepin’, square, level hipped smoke that will make a nice mature cow. 586 gcoc | Smoke | 10.2015 | Polled S: Color Me Up (Monopoly x Bullet Proof/Charolais) | D: Troubadour (Lead On x Donor 410 [WG x Donor 9970]) Preg check 9/12: 70 days

Dang good muscle and bone, big topped, super sound and still has a nice cowy look. Ask any steer trader in the country and they’ll all agree that you don’t pass up on the opportunity to own a Monopoly x Troubadour or a Troubadour x Monopoly; they’ve proven to make exceptional females as well.

This is one of my favorite breds that we’ve ever sold. Her dam was one of my all-time favorites to ever walk our pastures. She’s extremely easy doin’ and big, wide bodied, yet she still has a tremendous look—just like her late baldy donor dam that was one whale of a cow. A full sister brought $9,100 this summer and walked straight into Ken Reichter’s donor lineup, and her full brother that sold last fall for $10,500 is now at work on the west coast for Jim Mattes. A maternal brother by Heat Wave won one of the biggest county shows in Texas.

This is a once in a lifetime oportunity! In 2014, 8533 also produced two COC steers that sold for $20,000 apiece. In our 2015 COC Female Sale, two more Troubadour x 8533 progeny sold for $14,000 and $17,000. To say that Donor 8533 has been a staple breeding piece for Safari Cattle Co. would be an understatement.
