For Jennifer Burks, McNairy County has never simply been a place to live—it has always been home.

Rooted in the community that raised her, she now finds joy in giving back while raising the next generation in the same hometown she loves.

"I am a proud McNairy County native," Jennifer said. "I was actually one of the lucky ones who was born right here in Selmer. McNairy County has always been home, and I feel blessed to raise my family in the same community that helped shape me."

Family is at the center of Jennifer's life. She and her husband, Blair Burks, are raising three active children; Brody (12), Briar Jack (9), and Blythe (5), while balancing careers, community service, and the busy schedules that come with youth s ports and family activities.

Together, Jennifer and Blair own Burks Heating & Air, a second-generation family business that has faithfully served McNairy County for more than four decades.

"My husband and I own Burks Heating & Air, a second-generation family business that has proudly served our community for over 40 years," Jennifer shared. "In addition, I work at AppleGate Recovery here in Selmer."

Whether she's helping customers through the family business or encouraging individuals on their recovery journey, Jennifer's work is centered on building relationships and making a positive impact.

"When helping with Burks Heating & Air, my focus is always customer satisfaction," she said. "Over the years, whenever I've filled in for my husband, I've enjoyed getting to know our customers on a personal level and building relationships that go beyond business."

Her role at AppleGate Recovery has given her an opportunity to make an even deeper difference in people's lives.

"At AppleGate Recovery, I have the privilege of helping patients celebrate recovery and move forward toward healthier, more successful lives. We strive to be a steppingstone to their next chapter and greatest successes."

Away from work, Jennifer treasures every opportunity to make memories with her family.

Whether they're traveling, spending time on the water, or cheering from the sidelines at sporting events, family time is her greatest joy.

"Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, and anything involving water—whether it's the lake, river, or beach," she said.

"I'm also a Disney enthusiast and have a special place in my heart for animal rescue and fostering. Helping animals in need and seeing them find safe, loving homes is something I find incredibly rewarding. Most of my free time is spent making memories with my children and supporting them in their many activities and sports."

Jennifer's passion for serving extends well beyond her family. She is an active member of the McNairy County Parks and Recreation Board, where she works to help create opportunities for children throughout the community.

"I've never been very good at saying no when it comes to getting involved in the community!" she laughed. "My greatest passion is serving on our Parks and Recreation Board. With three children involved in sports, I've seen firsthand the tremendous impact our community can have on young people. Making sure our kids have opportunities, activities, and a strong support system is incredibly important to me, and I'm excited about the direction we're headed."

Jennifer believes meaningful change begins close to home, and she has been inspired by the women who continually invest their time, talents, and energy into making McNairy County stronger.

"I've always joked that if you want something done right, put a woman in charge!" she said with a smile. "All jokes aside, McNairy County is blessed with many strong, capable women who lead by example. They're women who step up, take initiative, and get things done. If I were ever considered even a small part of that group, I would feel very honored."

She continued, "I believe that before you can change the world, you have to make a difference in your own community. I've seen so much positive growth happening in McNairy County, little by little, because of people who genuinely care. It's easy to love this place when you're surrounded by so many individuals who are committed to making our community better for everyone."

Jennifer Burks exemplifies what it means to lead through service. Whether she's supporting customers, encouraging those rebuilding their lives, volunteering for local youth, rescuing animals, or simply cheering on her children, she continues to invest in the people and places that make McNairy County special. Through her compassion, commitment, and servant's heart, Jennifer is helping shape a stronger community—one relationship at a time.

Some people leave a mark on their community through grand gestures.

Others do it through countless small acts of kindness that, over time, create a legacy of compassion.

For lifelong McNairy County resident LaFran Plunk, serving others has never been about recognition—it's simply been a way of life.

Born and raised in McNairy County, LaFran has spent her life investing in the people and places she loves.

Whether helping families through difficult circumstances, volunteering in her church, supporting local first responders, or quietly delivering meals to those who are homebound, her heart for service shines through in everything she does.

After dedicating 25 years to West Tennessee Legal Services as a Domestic Violence Paralegal, LaFran entered semi-retirement before beginning a new chapter as a Customer Care Representative at Ford of Corinth, where she has worked for the past year. While her career has changed, her commitment to helping people has remained constant.

A Life of Quiet Service and Lasting Impact

At home, LaFran shares life with her beloved fur baby, Summit, who, as she jokingly puts it, "owns the house, and I just pay the bills."

When she's not working, LaFran stays busy with hobbies that reflect her creative and nurturing spirit. She enjoys cooking, canning food, making crafts, cheering on the University of Tennessee, and traveling with the Tennessee Order of the Eastern Star. She also treasures spending time with the children at First Methodist Church of Adamsville, where she remains actively involved.

Community service has become one of LaFran's defining passions. Soon to serve as the Worthy Matron of Dixie Chapter #115, Order of the Eastern Star, she works alongside fellow members on projects that directly benefit the community. Their outreach includes distributing bottled water to local sheriff's deputies, police departments, EMS personnel, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, collecting school supplies for Bethel Springs Elementary School, donating essential items to the Ronald McDonald House in Memphis, and partnering with the Selmer Masonic Lodge on numerous community service initiatives.

Her ministry of kindness extends well beyond organized events. LaFran enjoys cooking for those who are sick or homebound, believing that even the simplest act of caring can make someone's difficult day a little brighter.

When asked why it is important for women to lead and contribute through work and volunteerism, LaFran's answer reflects the v alues that have guided her entire life.

"Women should be a good example for the youngsters and other people in our community because someone is always watching you whether you know it or not," she says. "I have always volunteered, and I believe it is our duty as citizens of McNairy County to help the sick and bereaved. If there is someone suffering, it is our duty to help in any way we can."

She also lives by a personal philosophy that has shaped her daily actions for years: "I shall never pass this way but once; therefore any good that I can do, don't let me defer because I will only pass this way once."

LaFran smiles as she admits she tries to do one good deed every day and preferably without anyone knowing who did it.

"If the person finds out it was me, then it doesn't count, and I'll have to do something else," she laughs. "It sounds corny, but sometimes it just makes you feel good to do something for someone else just because."

In a world that often celebrates the loudest voices, LaFran Plunk reminds us that true leadership is often found in quiet faithfulness. It is found in showing up, lending a hand, encouraging a neighbor, and serving without expecting anything in return.

Her life is a beautiful example that the strongest communities are built by people who simply choose, day after day, to make life better for someone else.

And that is exactly the kind of woman who makes McNairy County proud.
