Each November, Native American Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States. It is a wonderful opportunity to honor and recognize those of Native descent, their history, impact, and culture. Originally established as “American Indian Day” in 1916, the month-long observance was officially designated in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. Locally, McNairy County is home to several residents that are of Native descent. Among them is Taylor Horton. A business owner and entrepreneur, Taylor holds her heritage near and dear to her heart.

To know her roots, let’s look at Taylor’s people. Taylor is a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe based in the Rocky Boy Reservation in Montana. The reservation, which was established on September 7, 1916, is nestled within the scenic Bear Paw Mountains, in north-central Montana.

Coming together, the reservation was conceived from two related peoples, the Cree (Nēhiyaw), who migrated south from Canada, and the Chippewa (Ojibwe), who moved westward from North Dakota. Though once distinct, these groups came together in the late 19th century and were officially recognized as the Chippewa Cree Indians of the Rocky Boy’s Reservation. The Tribe was among the first in the nation to embrace selfgovernance, demonstrating leadership and resolve, and establishing a strong foundation for future generations. Taylor is a part of this proud resilient tribe. “My name is Taylor Anderson Horton,” Taylor said, introducing herself. “I grew up parttime in McNairy County and went to high school at MCHS, class of 2011. My dad, Paul Anderson, a McNairy County Native, was in the air force, based in Great Falls, Montana, where he met my mom. She is 100 percent Chippewa Cree, and our tribe is from Rocky Boy, Montana. My mom's side of the family moved to Denver, Colorado, where I mostly grew up. I flew back and forth from Colorado to Tennessee while growing up. I still fly to Colorado once a year to see my mom and family there. My husband is Charlie Horton, and we have one child. Her name is Ruby Horton. She's named after my late grandmother, Ruby Anderson.”

“I am Co-Owner of Moody Cat Coffee Shop in Selmer, Tennessee, along with Becca Platt Sutton,” Taylor said. “We celebrated our one-year birthday on July 4th. Our goal opening Moody Cat was to create a space where anyone and everyone would feel comfortable spending time together and enjoying amazing coffee. No matter where they come from, how much money they have, what color their skin is, we love that people come as they are to Moody Cat. Our goal was to participate in our community in any way we can. We are always having events at Moody Cat; baby showers, birthday parties, Bible studies, meetings, photoshoots, Trivia Nights, we've even had a wedding. We love being a part of our communities' milestones and celebrations.”

When not working, Taylor enjoys playing golf, creating art, spending time with loved ones, and cuddling her pets. Still, she loves encouraging other women to be involved and to make a difference where and when they can.

“It's important for women to lead and contribute to our communities because we bring heart and strength to any situation,” said Taylor. “Women are resilient and beautiful! We can do anything we set our minds to. For any young women who are struggling to find their way, please know that your path is out there! Fight for yourself. You deserve love and happiness! There is no such thing as too many strong women supporting each other and lifting each other up! There is room for all of us.”

Thank you, Taylor, for being a great example of strength and creativity. And thank you for sharing your heritage with your community. We are better because of you.

YOUNG GIRLS TO THE

Wait on the beauty of the Lord.

This world will hand you distractions, disappointments, and counterfeit versions of joy but God remains the same constant through it all. He is the thrill of hope. The peace that doesn’t fade. The beauty that never disappoints.

Wait on Him His timing, His love, His plan and you’ll find that nothing compares.

“Those who look to Him are radiant.” – Psalm 34:5
