A JOURNEY OF SERVICE, LOSS, AND HOPE If there ever was or would be a McNairy County woman that is the living example of commitment lived out long before there was a title to go with it, LaShell Moore is that person. Her care and concern have for years been walked out with no regard to the status, political affiliation or color of one’s skin. LaShell has served professionally and civically as an educator, board member of the McNairy County Chamber of Commerce, Arts in McNairy and head of the Mary Lou Johnson Foundation. Currently, she serves as an Alderwoman and Vice-mayor for the Town of Selmer. Recently, LaShell shared some of her deepest thoughts and feelings regarding her journey. Her story begins below:

“There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after.”

“There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after. For me, that moment arrived on November 6, 2023, the day I lost my 22-year-old son to a drug overdose, only hours before learning that I had won my election as an alderwoman for the Town of Selmer, the first Black woman ever elected, and the first woman elected in more than 20 years.”

“What should have been one of the proudest milestones of my life became one of the most bittersweet days I will ever know. While others were celebrating an election victory, I was in shock, devastated beyond words. Joy and heartbreak collided in the same breath.

I smiled because I had to because people were watching, because expectations don’t pause for grief.

Inside, my heart was breaking in ways I didn’t yet have language for. The future I stepped into looked nothing like the one I had imagined, because the son I loved so deeply was no longer there to walk into it with me.”

“Long before that day, my life had been shaped by service. I worked in healthcare, accounting, and education, each role teaching me discipline, compassion, and responsibility. Those experiences ultimately prepared me for a deeper calling, founding the Mary Lou Johnson Scholarship Foundation. What began as an effort to provide scholarships to African American high school students later evolved into Mary Lou Johnson, Inc., a nonprofit that better reflects the breadth of services and initiatives we now offer to uplift and strengthen our community.”

“Along the way, I’ve received honors, awards, and accolades, recognition for leadership, service, and impact. I am grateful for every one of them. Yet none compares to, and none could ever outweigh, the loss of my child. Achievements lose their shine when measured against grief. Titles fade when a mother’s heart is broken.”

“In the days and months following my son’s passing, I had to learn what it meant to find a new normal. That new normal meant showing up to meetings, shaking hands, making decisions, and carrying out public duties while grief sat on my shoulders like a ton of bricks. It meant smiling when I didn’t feel like smiling and functioning while my world felt permanently altered.”

“My mind became a relentless place. I re-played every memory, every conversation, every decision, asking myself the same haunting questions: Where did I go wrong? What did I miss? As a mother, those questions cut deeper than anything else. Grief has a way of turning love into guilt and selfblame, even when logic tells you there are no clear answers. I searched endlessly for signs I should have seen and moments I wished I could relive.”

“Much of that pain was carried in silence. I cried when no one was around because I didn’t want anyone to know how badly I was hurting. I had responsibilities. I had a public role. There was pressure—spoken and unspoken—to be strong. So, I held it together in public and fell apart in private. Some days I tried to cry my pain away, hoping the tears would eventually run dry. Other days I tried to sleep my pain away, believing rest might offer an escape from the heaviness that greeted me every morning. But grief doesn’t disappear when your eyes are closed, and it doesn’t leave just because you hide it well.”

“During that time, I learned that I could not carry this loss alone. I leaned on my family in ways I never had before, allowing them to hold me up when the weight of my grief felt unbearable. They became my safe place, holding me up when I felt like I was collapsing under the weight of my sorrow. Their love reminded me that while I was mourning the loss of one son, I still had a son and a grandson who needed me. As a mother, I had to keep showing up, comforting my surviving son even as my own heart was breaking, learning how to be present for him while navigating my own pain. Holding both truths at once, grieving deeply while continuing to live and love—has been one of the hardest lessons grief has taught me.”

“Eventually, someone suggested therapy. It wasn’t an easy decision. In Black culture, telling your business, especially to strangers, is not always encouraged. But I reached a point where I needed help. Therapy permitted me to grieve honestly. It taught me that strength doesn’t mean pretending you’re okay. Healing doesn’t come from avoiding the pain, but from facing it with honesty, support, and grace. Allowing myself to feel the hurt didn’t make me weak, it made me human.”

“At the same time, I leaned heavily on my faith. On the days I couldn’t stand on my own, I depended on God to hold me up. My faith didn’t remove the pain, but it gave me something solid to cling to when everything else felt uncertain.”

“Grieving my son while serving as an alderwoman changed me at my core. It refined my purpose and deepened my calling. I had already devoted nearly two decades to community service, but now that service carries a different weight. I see people differently, recognizing silent pain, addiction, loss, and extraordinary resilience. Public service is no longer just a civic responsibility; it is deeply personal.”

“When I was recently elected Vice Mayor of Selmer, the honor carried the same bittersweet weight. I am grateful and humbled by the trust placed in me, yet the ache remains, because my son was not there to witness it. Still, I believe he walks with me in every step I take in service.”

“Being elected as the first Black alderwoman for the Town of Selmer and the first Black Vice Mayor also meant breaking a glass ceiling. For generations, women, especially women of color, have been underrepresented in local government, often believing leadership wasn’t meant for them or wasn’t worth the sacrifice. I hope my journey shows other women, particularly those who have endured loss, hardship, or self-doubt, that there is space for them at the table. Our voices matter. Our experiences matter. And our pain does not disqualify us from leadership; it can shape us into stronger, more compassionate leaders.”

“If sharing my story helps even one person, a grieving parent, a woman considering public service, or someone searching for meaning after loss, then it is worth telling.”

“Life after tragedy is not the life you planned. But it can still be a life of purpose, service, and hope.

And sometimes, the most powerful leadership comes from those who know what it means to hurt and choose to show up anyway.”
