Southwest Tennessee Tourism is thriving! The Southwest Tennessee Tourism Association continues to see strong growth, expanded partnerships, and increased regional visibility as we work together to showcase everything that makes our region special. From heritage tourism and outdoor adventure to arts, music, and culinary experiences, our collaborative efforts are driving meaningful economic impact across our communities. This success belongs to each of you—our members and partners—whose dedication and creativity fuel the momentum we’re experiencing. We’re also excited about a full spring calendar! In April, you will notice a new look to our Shout Out SW TN magazine. Thanks to Russell Ingle and his creativity in delivering a quality publication each month. We are very excited to announce that we are partnering with B3 Creative Agency for a Spring/Summer campaign spotlighting the unforgettable experiences that define Southwest Tennessee Then in May, we look forward to gathering at Lone Oaks in Hardeman County with local leaders and partners for our Legislative Picnic an important opportunity to connect with elected officials, celebrate our progress, and advocate for continued investment in tourism. Legend of Southwest Tennessee BUDDY CANNON

Southwest Tennessee is a region defined not just by its landscapes, but by the people whose stories have shaped its identity. Across the counties of Chester, Decatur, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, McNairy, and Madison, generations have passed down tales of resilience, creativity, and influence. These are the stories that form the heart of the “Legends of Southwest Tennessee” series an ongoing effort to honor individuals whose lives have left a lasting mark on the culture and heritage of the region. Among those legends stands a name that resonates far beyond the borders of Tennessee: Buddy Cannon.

A Humble Beginning in Lexington

Born on April 4, 1940, in Lexington, Tennessee, Buddy Cannon’s journey began in a small town deeply rooted in music and community. Growing up in a musical family, he was surrounded by rhythm and melody from an early age. That environment planted the seeds for what would become an extraordinary career

Like many musicians of his era, Cannon didn’t set out with a grand plan for fame. He simply loved music. As he once reflected, playing in bands during his youth was about enjoyment and connection. That passion would eventually lead him to Nashville in the 1970s, where he took his first professional steps as a bass player for Grand Ole Opry star Bob Luman.

From the Road to the Writing Room

Touring with country legend Mel Tillis proved to be a turning point. What began as a pastime—writing songs to pass time on the tour bus quickly turned into something more meaningful. When Tillis recorded several of Cannon’s early songs, a realization set in: songwriting wasn’t just a hobby—it was a calling.

By 1976, Cannon had signed a publishing deal, launching a prolific songwriting career. Over the next two decades, he would write or co-write hits for some of country music’s biggest names, including George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Billy Ray Cyrus. Songs like “Set ’Em Up Joe” and “Giv Away” became staples of the genre, cementing his reputation as a master storyteller through music.

Shaping the Sound of Country Music

Cannon’s influence didn’t stop with songwriting. As an A&R executive with Mercury Records, he played a piv role in discovering and developing artists who w on to global fame—most notably Shania Twain and Billy Ray Cyrus. His instinct for talent and ability to connect artists with the right material helped define an er country music.

In the 2000s, Cannon further expanded his legacy as a producer. Working with icons like Willie Nelson, R and Alison Krauss, he helped craft chart-topping r blended authenticity with wide appeal. His philosophy w simple: surround yourself with great musicians, enjoy the process, and let that joy translate into the music.

A Lasting Legacy

Buddy Cannon’s contributions have earned him some of the highest honors in the industry. In 2021, he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in 2024, he received the Nashville Songwriters Association International President’s Award—recognition of a lifetime spent shaping the sound of American music.

Yet, despite his national and international success, Cannon’s roots remain firmly planted in Southwest Tennessee. In Lexington, a historical marker stands at the intersection of South Main Street and Natchez Trace Drive, commemorating his achievements and reminding visitors of the region’s deep musical heritage.

The story of Buddy Cannon is more than a biography—it’s a reflection of what makes Southwest Tennessee special. It’s about smalltown beginnings leading to global impact. It’s about creativity born from community. And it’s about the enduring belief that talent, when nurtured, can travel far while still honoring where it came from.

As the Legends of Southwest Tennessee series continues, stories like Cannon’s serve as both inspiration and invitation—encouraging us to celebrate the voices, past and present, that define this region.

Spring is blooming in full color at the Donnell Century Farm Spring Festival, and families across West Tennessee are invited to step into a day filled with flowers, fun, and unforgettable memories.

Set against the scenic countryside of Jackson, the festival transforms Donnell Century Farm into a vibrant celebration of the season. Guests can wander through breathtaking tulip fields perfect for capturing that picture-perfect spring moment while the blooms last.

Families will find plenty to enjoy with 20+ activities designed for all ages. Highlights include the lively Bunny Palooza & Egg Hunt Baby Animal Festival, where children ages 2–12 can participate in continuous egg hunts throughout the day. No basket? No problem kids can use provided baskets to collect 12 eggs, then trade them in for a fun game and a prize for every participant. The festival also features hands-on experiences with adorable baby animals, making it a hit with younger guests and animal lovers alike. And of course, no Easter celebration would be complete without a visit from the Sweet Easter Bunny—so bring your camera and capture those magical springtime memories.

Between activities, be sure to treat yourself to the farm’s famous fresh donuts, combo meals, and classic festival foods, adding a delicious touch to your day on the farm. As winter fades and the first signs of spring begin to bloom, Southwest Tennessee comes alive with color, community, and celebration. Across the region, farms, parks, and towns are welcoming families to experience the joy of Easter and the beauty of the season through a wide variety of events that highlight everything from agritourism to hometown traditions. From tulip fields to flashlight egg hunts, there is no shortage of opportunities to make memories this spring. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed afternoon on the farm or a lively community gathering, Southwest Tennessee offers something for everyone.

Communities throughout the region are embracing the spirit of Easter with creative and engaging events. In Brownsville, the Parks and Recreation Department is adding a twist to the traditional egg hunt with a Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt on April 17 at Volunteer Park. With over 2,000 eggs hidden in the dark, families are encouraged to bring flashlights and a sense of adventure for this unique evening experience.

Downtown Savannah is gearing up for an exciting evening as Savannah Main Street invites the community and surrounding region to a special meet and greet with hometown favorite Brett Maverick, star of Farmer Wants a Wife.

Exit 56 Blues Fest Returns for 16th

Year with Expanded Lineup, Downtown Kickoff and New Website

The 16th Annual Exit 56 Blues Fest returns to Brownsville, Tennessee, Memorial Day weekend, May 22–24, bringing a full weekend of authentic Blues, regional talent, and community celebration, plus now expanded to three days with an exciting new Friday night kickoff event in Downtown Brownsville Headquarters for the event are just off I-40 at Exit 56 where the festival continues to attract thousands of visitors each year to experience the rich musical heritage of West Tennessee. This year’s event will feature 16 live performances across a range of Blues styles, from traditional acoustic sounds to electric and rhythm & blues, with a special Women in Blues showcase on Sunday.

New for 2026, the festival will open Friday, May 22, with a 5 pm, evening kickoff at Uptown Alley in historic Downtown Brownsville, creating a vibrant start to the weekend and bringing music and energy directly to local businesses. Attendees are encouraged to explore and support downtown restaurants and merchants during the kickoff event. The main festival continues Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, May 24, beginning at 10 am, on the grounds of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center at Exit 56.

In addition to live music, attendees can enjoy a variety of activities throughout the weekend. Saturday will feature a Corvette Car Show presented by the Volunteer Corvette Club of West Tennessee; registration begins at 9:30 am, with awards presented at 3 pm. At noon Saturday, the official unveiling of this year’s festival poster will take place. Designed by local artist Roy Hawkins, the poster will pay homage to Brownsville’s Blues pioneers while also recognizing festival favorites who continue to carry the tradition forward.

Festivalgoers can also shop with arts and crafts vendors and enjoy a variety of food truck offerings during Saturday and Sunday’s events, adding to the full festival experience

Organizers are also excited to announce the launch of a newly redesigned website, exit56blues com, offering a more user-friendly experience with expanded information on the artists, vendors and festival updates. The website was designed by Jackson TN’s B3 Creative Agency.

“Exit 56 Blues Fest continues to grow while staying true to its roots,” said Sonia Outlaw-Clark, festival organizer. “This year’s additions allow us to expand the experience, support more musicians, and create even more opportunities for the community and visitors to connect with the music and culture that define Brownsville – Soul Town Tennessee”

The festival remains free and open to the public, made possible through the continued support of sponsors, partners, festivalgoers and the community.

Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau is pleased to announce that ticket sales for the 14th Annual Generals Breakfast at Cherry Mansion have begun. The event will be held on Saturday, April 4, beginning at 9 a.m., on the lawn of the historic home in Savannah. The Cherry Mansion came of note during the Civil War when General Ulysses S. Grant made his headquarters at the home during the Battle of Shiloh. The story goes that General Grant was enjoying breakfast with his staff in the Cherry Mansion, his headquarters, in Savannah, Tennessee when he heard the faint roar of artillery from the fighting at Pittsburg Landing down river; and said, “Gentlemen, the ball is in motion.”

Tickets for the event are $20 each and include the outdoor breakfast catered by Mollie Monday’s featuring hot biscuits, gravy, breakfast casserole, coffee and water and a selection of cherry treats, along with a storytelling program by the attending in character generals.
