Many programs are very popular and fill quickly, so quickly that we often have waiting lists for them. All requests for cancellations, refunds, or transfers must be made in writing via email to rec@southwindsor-ct.gov or in person in our office located at the Wapping Parks and Recreation Facility. In order to allow us time to process your request and fill spots from the waitlist, all requests must be received by 4:30 pm on the Wednesday prior to the start of the session.

All refund requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to the discretion of the Parks and Recreation Department, and as such, full and/or pro-rated refunds are not guaranteed.

There are NO refunds for Veteran’s Memorial Park daily admission or season memberships. Once these are purchased they are nonrefundable.

RecDesk is a 100% web based solution for Recreation Departments, Schools, Churches, Civic and Non-Profit Organizations that helps manage facilities, programs, memberships, leagues, and registrations. RecDesk is a new, intuitive program that will allow customers an easier and more efficient way to manage their family’s registrations, memberships and reservations. The Family Portal feature will allow customers to track family balances and registrations and will also provide a new calendar view of your family’s activity schedule.

Unless otherwise noted, you can register for all of our programs from the convenience of your home computer. Online program registration begins simultaneously to in-house registration.

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Molly Keays Director of Parks & Recreation

We are excited to mail out our spring and summer brochure to the 06074 community for the first time in over a year! Although the last few years have been a challenge for our community due to the ongoing global pandemic, your Parks & Recreation Department has continued to work diligently to offer programs for our community whether it be outdoors, indoors (socially distanced), or virtual. Our mission has remained the same - providing enhanced customer service and exceptional experiences through quality programs and facilities. We strive to remain that positive entity for our community. So, although we have had to adapt some programs, we still managed to run over 200+ recreational programs, maintain engagement via new social media and event options, and continue the regular care of all public parks, athletic fields, school grounds, open spaces, and public properties for our community. We have successfully continued to display pride in our people, parks, and programs throughout these challenging times. I am proud to work with such a dedicated, creative, and enthusiastic team of staff. They have truly worked hard to ensure each community member in South Windsor had a form of recreation to participate in! This upcoming spring and summer, we hope that everyone comes out to experience one of our opportunities to recreate. Whether you join a sports league, attend our summer programs, walk our extensive trail systems, attend one of our signature concerts at Evergreen Walk, cool off at the Veteran’s Memorial Park pool, or shop local at our Farmers Market, there’s something for everyone!

What’s new in the 06074?

At our signature summer concert series, you will notice our shiny new Show Mobile stage! This new stage was made possible through cost-sharing with the South Windsor Rotary Club. The new stage will provide a higher-quality concert experience for our community!

We have started to work on our new pickleball courts and dek hockey arena project at Rye Street Park. We will be replacing the current tennis courts with eight pickleball courts on the left and a dek hockey arena on the right.

Weather permitting, we anticipate that this project will be complete sometime this summer! Once it is complete, we will have a few new leagues and programs that will be made available for the community!

This summer at VMP, we will be launching a water safety program! During the height of the pandemic, public access to swim instruction was limited.

We know that learning to swim and being safe in the water is an essential life skill. This year, we are providing access to swim lessons and water safety education to ensure the health and safety of our community. We will be offering special events and water safety education at the pool and around the community. Free or reduced fee swim instruction may be available for those who qualify. Check out our aquatics section for more information.

New Staff: We have had changes to our full-time staff team over the last year. Please welcome Kyle Andolina as our new Athletics Recreation Supervisor! Kyle joined the team on January 3, 2022, replacing Ashley Casiano who moved on to a new job in the field.

Kyle comes to us with high energy and extensive athletics and youth development experience. Kyle is looking forward to meeting our community members at various programs! We look forward to all of the awesome new opportunities he will bring to the community, like our adult corn hole league!

Within our Parks Division, please welcome Mark Hilton and Bryan McTeague, and Chris Martin! Mark and Bryan are our new Maintainers, and Chris is our new groundskeeper! Our new Parks staff come ready to ensure that all of our parks stay in the best condition possible! Make sure to say hello and thank you to our amazing crew for all the work that they do!

Wapping Parks and Recreation Facility Update: To keep our community informed, we have an update regarding the Wapping Parks and Recreation Facility. Due to the increase in student population across the district, the Board of Education will need to utilize the Wapping School Building for high school operations beginning in July 2023.

How will this affect the Parks and Recreation Department?

As we will no longer be able to utilize the Wapping building, we will need to secure a new location for our department to serve as a permanent home. A permanent home is vital so we can continue to provide the Parks and Recreation programs, activities, and services that our community has come to know, expect and love!

To determine our next steps, we are proactively working with the Town Administration, the Town Council, and the Parks and Recreation Commission to create a Parks and Recreation Facility Planning and Implementation Committee. The purpose of the committee is to assist in identifying the recreational needs of the community (both passive and active), to identify various locations as possibilities, and to vet available locations for use based on factors such as programmatic needs, accessibility to residents, cost-effectiveness, and space for growth. The committee will then provide recommendations for our department’s relocation plans to

the Town Council for approval to ensure we have a plan in place before July 2023. We encourage all residents that would like to support our Parks and Recreation Department to become involved in the planning and implementation process! To do so, please contact the Town Council, through email or by attending one of their meetings. Our community has always shown our department their encouragement, dedication, and positive feedback through the use of our parks and participation in our programs and events, and we truly appreciate you all!

What’s Happens in the Meantime?

Although we are unsure where our new home will be at this time, we do promise that we will continue to maintain our current high-quality programs, parks, events, and activities. As always, we remain steadfast in our commitment to South Windsor and to enhancing our community through these exceptional experiences.

To that end, we are excited to share with our community the abundance of fun, engaging ways to recreate this upcoming spring and summer. Whether you plan to enjoy some of our annual activities or wish to try one of our new offerings, the South Windsor Parks and Recreation Department has something for everyone!

Preschool Program Highlights High Quality Program at Affordable Rates The choice of classes varying in length, days, and affordability allows you to make your own schedule to suit the needs of your family! A feature of joining our preschool program is signing your child up for each class à la carte, allowing your family the benefits of our flexible schedule.

Many families take advantage of having the opportunity to participate in the classroom with their child. This helps many preschoolers remain comfortable until they are ready to “graduate” to independent classes.

We also offer a variety of independent classes for children as young as two! With classes that vary in length as well as the option to enroll in back to back classes, you can choose a schedule that is beneficial to your child. Independent classes inspire confidence in your preschooler and provide them the opportunity to thrive in a classroom setting.

Playful Learning Environment Our classrooms are open, inviting, and full of hands-on fun and learning experiences for your little one! The positive socialization that your preschooler receives will establish many lifelong family friendships.

Low Teacher-Student Ratios By having a low child-teacher ratio, your child will receive plenty of TLC and individualized attention within the group setting. Our classes offer your child the opportunity to learn and play in a variety of settings, including: group learning, independent learning, and child-selected activities!

Jukido Jujitsu

Ages 6 and up

Jukido is a traditional Japanese Jujitsu class teaching realistic self-defense.

The techniques that a student will learn include throws, takedowns, arm locks, pressure points and strikes. Jukido stresses the seven codes of bushido: justice, courage, benevolence, politeness, truth, honor and loyalty.

We take pride in our camp programs, and each is uniquely designed to fit you and your child’s needs. This summer, we will have three camp programs held at SWPRD’s home base: Wapping Parks & Recreation Facility! We are pleased with the convenience of having a one-stop-shop for all camps at this cohesive location, and are excited that each camp will continue to remain its own separate entity.

We believe summer camp is about having fun, making friendships, teamwork, and of course, recreating! We can’t wait to see you there!

Navigators Summer Camp

The fun of Camp continues on!

Ages 16-21

Each day participants will meet at Wapping Parks & Recreation Facility and participate in arts & crafts, and field games. We can accommodate up to 80 participants, so sign up fast!

Children can be dropped off as early as 7:00 a.m. and enjoy free play until 9:00 a.m. when organized activity will begin.

Monday - Friday 8/22 - 8/26, $310, 7:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Location: Wapping Parks & Recreation Facility PLEASE NOTE - This program is contingent on camper enrollment and staffing availability.

This is for any camper at Little Explorers, Camp Discovery, or Adventure Unit. Options for campers at Little Explorers may be different for a more age appropriate snack!

A membership is required to choose one ice cream or candy per day. Items are typically around $1 or $2 and choices will vary throughout the summer.

Memberships come in denominations of $5, $10, or $20. Sign up prior to the start of your session.

A camp for young adults with special needs in the South Windsor community (ages 16-21).

Navigators meet Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 1:00-4:00 p.m. This program will include an inclusion piece with Human Services’ Rising Stars Camp from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Although fun in the water is encouraged, the facility experiences many extremely busy weekends and weekdays, so for all of our guests to enjoy a comfortable atmosphere, please adhere to the following guidelines: • Water guns and hard surface balls, such as tennis balls, are not allowed.

• Group rates and reservations are not available.

• Grilling anywhere on the facility grounds is not permitted.

• All lifejackets must be Coast Guard approved.

• There are no snorkel masks allowed.

• All patrons must wear appropriate swim attire.

• Horseplay and running are not permitted while in the park.

• Parents/Guardians are responsible for their children at all times.

Non swimmers must be within an arm’s reach.

• For the safety of everyone in the park, alcohol and glass bottles are strictly prohibited.

AQUATICS Private Lessons All Ages Private swim lessons are offered for both children and adults. There are two options: • One instructor, one student • One instructor, two students that are within one level of each other More about private lessons: • A private lesson is limited to two participants per class • If you are sharing a class, and splitting the cost, the full fee is due at the time of registration.

• Instructors vary session to session and requests for specific instructors may not be honored.

AQUATICS Aquatic Programs The SEALS Swim Team Ages 5 -18 Come join the 31st season of the South Windsor Seals Swim Team sponsored by the South Windsor Jaycees. Make new friends and improve your strokes. The Seals is a developmental team geared toward personal improvement while having fun. Swimmers will learn and improve upon all 4 racing strokes, using a starting block, and finishing an event. The coaches are dedicated to each individual while creating a fun team atmosphere.

Pride in OUR Parks

Pride in OUR Parks is a convenient community service opportunity for resident civic and non-profit organizations. The program is an amazing result of a highly successful Eagle Scout project completed by Derek Von Nieda from Boy Scout Troop 880 officially recognized in January, 2015.

The project spanned over a years’ time and consisted of 212 man hours.

His task was to outfit a 6’ x 10’ parks & recreation department box trailer with the necessary hand tools to clean parks and clear trails within our park system. Derek determined the inventory of tools and then designed and custom built the interior storage and racking system that kept everything organized and could withstand the jostling and shifting of transporting.

The program is available to all non-profit and civic organizations who would like to volunteer time to schedule a clean-up day at a park, or spruce up a trail to help maintain and display “pride in our parks”. All that is necessary is an adult leader to contact our office at 860-648-6355 to discuss and agree upon a location of interest and in need of some TLC, schedule a day or weekend and we will deliver the trailer and its content to the desired site for your group to use to accomplish the chore at hand.

An adult leader would need to sign-out the keys to the trailer in advance and return them after completing the scheduled duration. This opportunity in many cases qualifies for merit badges, credit towards organization membership or required achievements.

BIKING & HIKING Walk and Wheel Ways South Windsor Walk and Wheel Ways 2022 Spring and Summer Happenings

The South Windsor Walk & Wheel Ways is a walking and bicycling volunteer advocacy group. In 2020 the town of South Windsor was awarded a Bronze level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) from the League of American Bicyclists. This award reflects local leaders’ ongoing work to build better places for safe biking. Monthly meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at The Wapping Parks & Recreation Facility at 91 Ayers Rd at 7:00pm. This year we will be celebrating 15 years of promoting safe biking, walking, hiking and running in South Windsor.

Moonlight Walk Friday, April 1st • 7:15 pm • Rotary Pavilion, 55 Chief Ryan Way

Meet at 7:15pm for a 1.5 mile walk through Nevers Park and a chance to gather by the firepit! The walk begins at 7:30pm. All ages are welcome!

It doesn’t matter if you’re 18 or 80, we’ll get you rolling in no time! With our safe, easy, and effective method, you will learn how to balance and ride a bike as well as adjust your helmet for proper fit. A second day for additional practice time, if needed, will be on Sunday, May 1st from 1:00 – 3:00pm.

4th Grade Bicycle Safety Education Program Seeking volunteers Help 4th grade students master bicycle safety skills, hand signals, changing gears and rules of the road. Last year, we raised more than $12,000 for our great charities.

Paws in the Park, organized by the South Windsor Jaycees, has plenty of attractions for both our canine friends and kids of all ages. Celebrity judges will hand out awards to our furry buddies, there are contests such as Best Costume, Best Kisser, and Musical Sit! All of our winners and participants will receive great prizes compliments of Camp Bow Wow. Celebrity judges will be on hand to help us pick out the best of the best. When your pups get tired stop at the doggie rest and water stations!

We realized that we had many folks who do go above and beyond the call of duty to make us successful, so we created the annual South Windsor Parks & Recreation Dept. Merit Awards Program, \ZILQ\QWVITTa X]JTQKTa ZMKWOVQbML XZQWZ \W W]Z ÅVIT []UUMZ KWVKMZ\ MIKP aMIZ 1\ QVKT]LM[ \PM “Hall of Fame” and the “A,B,C,D” award which stands for “Above & Beyond the Call of Duty”.

ALANA CEPPETELLI Alana has worked for our department for three years and has been amazing since day one! She’s someone who consistently works hard and does her best every single day. She’s prepared, trusting, energetic and passionate about summer camp. She started working as a counselor at our Camp Discovery program, and it was very evident from the start how well she relates with both staff and campers. She takes initiative and anticipates the needs of the department. In addition to camp, Alana has helped out other programs within our department and is especially important to our concert staff. She’s a natural leader and she has gone above and beyond what is asked of her. In addition to working for our department, Alana attends UCONN and is studying to be a mental health counselor to facilitate equine-assisted psychotherapy! She shines wherever she goes and she is a fantastic member of our team at South Windsor Parks and Recreation. Congratulations Alana!

LINDA CIARCIA Linda Ciarcia has been with our department for 4 years, as one of our nurses who covers the 11 hour days in our camp program. Initially, Linda served as our RN at the Navigators Camp, quickly becoming a permanent fixture in our Day Camps! Her experience as a school nurse in Wethersfield gives us unmeasurable confidence and we love her ability to adapt to any situation. We rely on her expertise and years of working as an RN to provide the best care for our participants. Thank you, Linda, we look forward to many more years working with you!

JULIA MARTOCCHIO Julia is a recent South Windsor Public Schools graduate who has been working for the 4th R” program for the last two years, and has most recently joined our camp staff this past summer. One of Julia’s greatest strengths is her enthusiasm for working with children, both in a group and a one-on-one setting. Her excitement for her job and for our programs is genuine and infectious, and her positive attitude puts others at ease. She is an endless cheerleader for those around her, always working towards her best and helping others be their best along the way. As both a program leader and a one-on-one, Julia puts in extra effort to get to know her all the kids on a personal level, and works hard to create unique 64

games, activities and experiences that reflect her participants’ interests.

She is creative in her ideas, thinking outside the box to find projects that spark joy in each child. As a one-on-one, Julia is adept at assessing and then meeting her participants’ needs, and treats each member of our programs with kindness and dignity. During this past year, Julia even sewed an art-smock for her participant so that he could be included in art projects in a safe, fun way. Julia starts and ends each day with a smile, and she shares that happiness with all those around her. She truly makes 4th “R” a memorable experience for her participants, and our department is grateful for her enthusiasm and dedication!

TERESA TWOMEY Teresa Twomey has been working for South Windsor Parks and Recreation as a Camp Nurse for three years. She comes to us with professionalism, knowledge, compassion, dedication and enthusiasm. She is always willing to help out at the drop of a hat, even with the smallest tasks.

Not only does Teresa serve as an RN for both our camp and 4th “R” programs, but she is also a welcomed reference for our entire department during a time when our health climate is difficult to navigate. In addition to her dedication to SWPRD, Dr. Twomey is the chair of the undergrad nursing programs at Quinnipiac University. Congratulations Teresa!

SOUTH WINDSOR WALK AND WHEEL WAYS South Windsor Walk and Wheel Ways is a volunteer group dedicated to making South Windsor a safer place to walk and bike. Since their inception in 2007, this passionate team has planned bike rides, moonlit and sunset walks, CT Trails Day events, Bike to Work days, Adult Biking Classes and East Coast Greenway Bike Rides, just to mention a fraction of their community activities. They work tirelessly on projects such as connecting neighborhoods with trails and sidewalks, planning distribution of Bike Racks and promoting bike lanes throughout town. This committed group also provides yearly support in South Windsor’s 4th Grade Bicycle Safety Program at the elementary Schools. Most recently, Walk and Wheel Ways has been planning and designing the construction of The South Windsor Crosstown Trail. Their hard work along with these and other programs and projects contributed to South Windsor’s designation as a Silver Sustainable Community. Congratulations to the Walk and Wheel Ways members.

HALL OF FAME The Hall of Fame Award is reserved for those exceptional folks who have dedicated themselves to Parks & Recreation exhibited over a long term. Specifically, it is “To honor and recognize those individuals who, because off their outstanding dedication, have contributed immeasurably to the establishment, maintenance and continuation of community parks and recreation in South Windsor.”

BILLY MITCHELL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES Over the last 12 years, Billy Mitchell and Environmental Services have been instrumental in supporting South Windsor Parks and Recreation. To say that Billy is generous is an understatement. His donations of material, equipment and manpower to the town and SWPRD have enhanced our programs, events and parks.

ESI’s support has included, work at the Dog Park, bulldozer and equipment use in the parks, portable lights for fireworks displays and a spontaneous outdoor skating area, and most recently donation of portable bathrooms and hand washing stations for the entire season of the South Windsor Parks and Recreation Farmers’ Market. Anytime we have visited Billy at Environmental Services we leave with his help and generosity.

He likes to say: “Never count your favors”. These are words to live by.
