Weather Cancellation Policy If the South Windsor schools are cancelled, preschool classes will also be cancelled.

If the public schools have a delayed opening, morning preschool classes that start

before 12:00 p.m. will be cancelled. Always call the Cancellation Hotline Number

(860-648-6349) for the most recently updated information. Make-up classes will be scheduled based on facility and instructor availability. Partial refunds will be given if two or more of the same preschool class cannot be rescheduled.

When to Register South Windsor residents may register on THURSDAY, April 2nd at 8am for

all programs. Non-resident registration begins THURSDAY, April 9th at 8am.

Non-Resident Fees

There will be an additional charge for each non-resident program registration of $5 for programs under $50 and $10 for programs over $50.

How to Pay

The Parks & Recreation Department accepts cash, checks, or credit cards.

Please make checks payable to the Town of South Windsor, checks must have driver’s license number and expiration date written on them. Memberships and program registrations will not be accepted without FULL payment.

Fee Assistance

The South Windsor Parks & Recreation Department’s programs, classes, and special events are available to all residents regardless of economic status. The Parks and Recreation Department determines all fee assistance for qualified residents. A confidential application is available at the front desk, located in the Main office at 91 Ayers Road in South Windsor. Fee assistance is made possible through the Recreation Scholarship Fund.

Refund Policy Many programs are very popular and fill quickly, so quickly that we often have

waiting lists. The sooner we know of your intentions to cancel out of a program,

the sooner we can accommodate others. Requests for refunds will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Generally, full refunds are granted for legitimate medical reasons, or if our department cancels a program. Otherwise, refunds are

pro-rated and determined by the percentage of classes or sessions held prior to the date of written notification to the Parks & Recreation Department Main Office (NOT the instructor). The sooner we know, the bigger the refund.

There are NO refunds for Veteran’s Memorial Park daily admission or season memberships. Once these are purchased they are nonrefundable.

RecDesk is a 100% web based solution for Recreation Departments, Schools, Churches, Civic and Non-Profit Organizations that helps manage facilities, programs, memberships, leagues, and registrations. RecDesk is a new, intuitive program that will allow customers an easier and more efficient way to manage their family’s registrations, memberships and reservations. The Family Portal feature will allow customers to track family balances and registrations and will also provide a new calendar view of your family’s activity schedule.

Unless otherwise noted, you can register for all of our programs from the convenience of your home computer. Online program registration begins simultaneously to in-house registration.

Online registration can be accessed 24 hours a day.

A Message from “your” Director of Parks & Recreation The renovation of the cafeteria at Wapping is finally complete and ready for use!! You will hardly recognize it! New walls, new ceiling, new LED lighting, new floor, new electrical, new energy efficient air conditioning where none existed before, new window shades, new house P/A, new multi-media electronics, and new furniture will undoubtedly bring new life to the much needed community hall space! See page 68 for details to reserve/rent.

I am proud to welcome six new members to our parks & recreation team! The past year has presented us with a plethora of personnel predicaments as talented former staff have moved on to pursue different employment opportunities, family relocations, and career advancements. Simultaneously, we were in the midst of creating a couple new positions so an unusual amount of time was spent reviewing applications and interviewing candidates. Eight vacancies have been filled over the course of the last 16 months, six of those eight within the last six months. I am happy to say we have rebuilt our high performance team!

Ashley Casiano joined our department on Sept. 30, 2019 as Recreation Supervisor replacing Sarah Robinson who recently left to pursue a career in the non-profit world. Ashley is “home-grown” with a deep emotional attachment to South Windsor. A successful athletic career in soccer and lacrosse at SW High lead her to an honored four year stint as goalie for the Marist College, D1 women’s lacrosse team. She has successfully coached women’s lacrosse at AIC and Yale and is an active member of the Puerto Rico National Women’s Lacrosse team competing internationally. Ashley is also a certified personal trainer. She is responsible for our youth and adult sports leagues and programs.

Leah Margelony was also added to our team on Sept. 30, 2019 as our new Customer Service Clerk. She has worked previously with the Manchester, Coventry and Tolland Parks & Recreation Departments in part time capacities, totally understands and embraces community parks and recreation and loves dealing with people! Leah is our first point of contact with residents and has already elevated our front line experience to a new level with a refreshing approach and welcoming smile!

With two of four Recreation Supervisor positions vacant at the same time we were super excited when Nancy Glynn accepted our offer to join our team on December 30, 2019, replacing Lauren Bent who is relocating

with family. Nancy has a BA degree in Sociology from CCSU and six years of hands-on progressively increased aquatics programming, administration and supervisory experience climbing the traditional ladder from teenage lifeguard to pool director to aquatics manager with the Wethersfield Parks & Recreation Department and Town of West Hartford Cornerstone Aquatics Center. She is a Certified Pool Operator, and American Red Cross certified in Lifeguarding, as a Lifeguard Instructor, as a Water safety Instructor and in First Aid, CPR & AED. Nancy will be responsible for the aquatics operation at VMP in the summer and health, fitness & wellness programs throughout the year.

Ben Bedard joined our parks crew as a Maintainer I on, you guessed it, Sept. 30th filling the vacancy created when we promoted Dave Turkington to Parks Manager completing the Sept. trifecta! For such a young man Ben has impressive experience in landscaping, agriculture and mechanics and as such will be an asset to our parks division. In addition, Ben is a volunteer firefighter in Ellington. We see tremendous potential in Ben

Robert Link began his part time work with our parks crew as Groundskeeper on Feb.10, 2020 replacing Dave Davis who had recently retired. Robert has been working in the professional landscaping and property management industry for the past ten years and has the experience we are looking for in maintaining and creating landscape planting beds, tree work, pruning and mowing at all of our public building grounds.

On December 9, 2019 Matt Silvia was hired as a Maintainer I in our parks division replacing Tom Kuehlewind who relocated to follow family ties in Canada. Matt has been working part time for much of the past year filling in for our part time groundskeeper and wherever needed for our parks team that has been in a trend of short-handedness due to retirements, promotions and resignations. Matt also worked a number of years as one of our summer seasonal full time helpers providing supplemental support for the crew, primarily trim mowing and weed-whacking.

So, what else is new in 06074 land?

• Well for starters we have a brand new website successfully launched on Feb. 28th! Please visit us at recreation.southwindsor.org for a cleaner, user-friendly, easy to navigate on-line experience! But, I do ask you to please bear with us as the site is still somewhat under construction with a few minor punch list items to finalize. Let us know what you think!

• To coincide with the new website we also have a new email address! Contact us now at rec@southwindsor-ct.gov.

• With warm weather just around the corner many of you will be happy to see, and see better, with the brand new LED lighting recently installed at the Wapping tennis courts replacing the decades old insufficient mercury vapor fixtures. While doing this we also added a couple LED lamps to illuminate the recently renovated basketball court adjacent to the tennis courts to provide evening hoop game opportunities for the very first time! Ah, hot summer nights!

• Watch for exciting details as the Town plans for its 175th anniversary celebration on the weekend of August 7-9, 2020 at Nevers Park.

See page. 22 for more information and who to contact to get involved. I do know that the committee is looking for civic groups, businesses and individuals to participate in and help with the festivities.

• Due to a concerning rise in canine fecal “gifts” being left along the trail system, or tossed in the woods at Nevers Park you will soon be seeing a number of new signs posted to remind dog owners to be respectful of other park users and clean up after their pets. Ordinance Sec. 74-67 (8) states that “No person in a park shall bring or allow any dog onto park property unless the same is kept in a harness or on a leash, cord, or chain that is a maximum of seven feet in length and of sufficient strength to enable the dog to be under the control of its owner/ keeper at all times, who shall maintain control of such dog at all times; or allow any dog to dig up, mutilate, deface or destroy such property, or to bother other users thereof. The owners and/or keepers of all dogs, except dogs guiding the blind or guiding other physically disabled persons, on park property are required to remove defecation therefrom immediately from the property and dispose of same so as not to harm or disturb any property or person”. Please be considerate of others – it’s simple - your dog, your poop, your responsibility. And remember, the Gary Tyler Memorial Bark Park in Nevers Park is THE only permissible off-leash area on any town property. We thank you for your cooperation!

2020 Safety Town South Windsor Community Women’s Club is happy to present Safety Town! Your Pre-kindergarten

Experience the fastest racket sport in the world and train with former USA National Badminton Team member, Nikki Vered. Nikki has

been playing for over 25 years and for the past 11 years he’s been the

Program Director/Head Coach of Marblehead Youth Badminton, an established program in MA. He has produced multiple national and International champions and now hopes to start a competitive Bad-

minton Club here in his home state of CT. This program is designed to provide quality badminton training by incorporating a variety of

coaching techniques and drills that Nikki has learned and picked up

along the way. You will learn the basics and fundamentals of Badmin-

We take pride in our camp programs, and each is uniquely designed to fit you and your child’s needs. Continuing this year, all five of our

camp programs will be held at SWPRD’s home base: Wapping Parks & Recreation Facility! We were pleased with the convenience of hav-

ing a one-stop-shop for all camps at this cohesive location, and are excited that each camp will continue to remain their own separate entity.

Our camp setting at Wapping Parks & Recreation is ideal for

young campers. Camp will be held in the same classrooms that

our popular preschool program is run in! Join our Director and a

dynamic staff of trained counselors for theme days, songs, stories, games, arts and crafts, water play, indoor and outdoor activities and snacks! Our rotating schedule ensures all campers will be

active and engaged while working on socialization and large and small motor skills. Children will be broken into age-appropriate groups and daily outside play adds to your camper’s experience.

Camp on Wednesday morning is held at Veteran’s Memorial

Park. On these days, drop-off (for all campers) and pick up (for half-day campers) will be at VMP. Swimming and camp fun highlight the morning. All campers must be potty-trained!

Ages 8-18 The Connecticut Performing Arts Summer Theater Camp pres-

ents “Once Upon a Mattress, Jr”. This award winning musical is a

humorous spin on the classic fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea.” If you thought you knew the story, you may be in for a wallop-

ing surprise! Carried on a wave of beguiling songs and hilarious

twists and turns, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal

SPORT CAMPS Timothy Edwards Physical Education Experience (TEPEE) Grades 6-9 Our very own certified physical education & health professional from Timothy Edwards Middle School will lead physical

education units while incorporating the use of technology to

monitor health benefits. Team games, cooperative learning and individual activities will emphasize the skills and strategies needed to perform each activity.

players age seven through Little League age 12. Emphasis is on skill development, in-depth work in fielding, throwing, hitting,

of rules and regulations and stress on the importance of good

sportsmanship. Campers receive both individual and small group

instruction from college and professional level coaches. The player to coach ratio never exceeds 8:1.

Want to get a jump on the fall swim season?

USA ASCA Certified Level 3 coach Mike Krajewski will lead this

swim camp for swimmers who would like to work on the four competitive swim strokes and building endurance. Extensive work on starts, turns and finishes. Video will be used to see progress through this

awesome transition. Bring sneakers each night for dry land exercises.

SPORT CAMPS Skyhawks Sports Camps Since 1979, Skyhawks sports has led safe, fun and skill-focused sports camps and programs for youth between the ages of 3-12. We offer 15 different sports–and countless ways for your child to grow. The camps range from soccer to baseball to our popular multi-sport camps where kids sample three different sports (soccer, basketball and baseball) in one camp.

Skyhawks camps and programs are offered locally throughout over 500 communities. The format includes traditional week-long summer day camps and year-round after-school programs that range from 45 minutes to 6 hours in duration, per day. Our progression of camps and programs, led by our

Aquatic Programs The SEALS Swim Team Ages 5 -18 Come join the 30th season of the South Windsor Seals Swim Team sponsored by the South Windsor Jaycees. Make new friends and improve your strokes. The Seals is a developmental team geared toward personal improvement while having fun. Swimmers will learn and improve upon all 4 racing strokes, using a starting block, and finishing an event. The American Red Cross Lifeguarding program objective is to teach the skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.

Fee includes all materials. There is approximately 7 hours of online

learning that must be completed prior to the first class. Once registered with South Windsor Parks & Rec. Joe Lodge, the instructor of the

course, will send a web link directly to the participant in order to begin their online course work. Please check your email for a link from healthandsafetytrainingct@gmail.com.

Prerequisites: • Swim 300 yards continuously using a mix of front crawl & breaststroke.

Pride in OUR Parks Pride in OUR Parks (PIOP) is a convenient community service opportunity for resident civic and non-profit organizations. The program is an amazing result of a highly successful Eagle Scout project completed by Derek Von Nieda from Boy Scout Troop 880 officially recognized in January, 2015. The project spanned over a years’ time and consisted of 212 man hours. His task was to outfit a 6’ x 10’ parks & recreation department box trailer with the necessary hand tools to clean parks and clear trails within our park system. Derek determined the inventory of tools and then designed and custom built the interior storage and racking system that kept everything organized and could withstand the jostling and shifting of transporting.

The program is available to all non-profit and civic organizations

who would like to volunteer time to schedule a clean-up day at a park, or spruce up a trail to help maintain and display “pride in our parks”. All that is necessary is an adult leader to contact our office at 860-648-6355 to discuss and agree upon a location of interest and in need of some TLC, schedule a day or weekend and we will deliver the trailer and its content to the desired site for your group to use to accomplish the chore at hand. An adult leader would need to sign-out the keys to the trailer in advance and return them after completing the scheduled duration. This opportunity in many cases qualifies for merit badges, credit towards organization membership or required achievements.

A.B.C.D. AWARDS Back in august of 2009 we began a new initiative for our department.

We realized that we had many folks who do go above and beyond the call of duty to make us successful, so we created the annual South Windsor Parks & Recreation Dept. Merit Awards Program, traditionally publicly recognized prior to our final summer concert each year . It includes the “Hall of Fame” and the “A,B,C,D” award which stands for “Above & Beyond the Call of Duty”.

PATTY ALBERT

Three years ago, our department decided that we wanted to add a nursing component to our summer camp programs. As Parks & Recreation professionals with basic first aid training, but no serious medical experience, we felt it was important to strenghthen our standard of care at summer camp. Enter our first ABCD winner of the night, Patty Albert! Patty was our first camp nurse, and she has definitely expanded and improved our department since her arrival. Additionally, she takes the lead in assuring reliable nurse scheduling, she making sure we have sufficient inventory of top-ofthe-line supplies, and that we are following all proper procedures. She can always be seen with an ice pack and a smile, ready for whatever ailment may come her way!

JOE ARCHER

Joe is truly one of our “MVPs”. You can count on Joe to bring his enthusiasm and attention to detail to everything he does. He is eager to take on tasks and loves to be busy. All tasks are done with a smile and completed beyond expectations. Although he is designated as our Tuesday weeknight supervisor, you can find him supporting the department helping where needed and usually enjoying our Thursday night outdoor concert series! Joe is a part time employee with a full time dedicated attitude and approach to his shift. It is individuals like Joe who really make our SWPRD family whole. We are lucky to have such a passionate person on our staff.

SAM BAUM

It was a no-brainer for this next winner to receive the ABCD title, and it would only take a few minutes of interaction with him for anyone to agree! Since 2015, Sam Baum has been mastering the skill that is so important as a camp counselor: letting his silly, joyful 70

personality allow him to be a “big kid”. In addition to his contagious energy, he has shown his ability to always think ahead, be responsible, and go the extra mile planning activities that he knows his campers will enjoy. Sam is a “yes” on all accounts. He even insists on wearing our mascot costume at these concerts...every week!!! His enthusiasm is unmatched! Our special events and summer camps are truly made better by Sam’s presence, and for that, we thank you!

ASHLEY CASIANO

Although Ashley is a relatively newer member to the SWPRD family, she has quickly shown her maturity beyond her years, dedication and strong work ethic. In fact, if you didn’t know better you’d think she has been with us for many years already! Ashley was originally hired as our sports program coordinator and now assists in multiple facets of the department. It isn’t easy to find someone who can make independent sound department decisions on the fly in all situations, but we have certainly found that person in Ashley! Nearly immediately upon being hired, she took lead roles at special events and programs.

Ashley is not only extremely reliable but she goes above and beyond her role with every task at hand. She has been a wonderful addition to our department and continues to provide great program experiences for our residents.

KATRINA CLOUTIER

Katrina Cloutier is no stranger to ABCD activities. She has been with our department since 2013 and has worked in a variety of roles from 4th “R” program leader, camp counselor, event exuberance extraordinaire, hodge podge specialist, and most recently, 4th “R” site director. Katrina’s bubbly personality and engaging spirit is so captivating, it’s no wonder she’s worked in nearly every rec department program or event!

Katrina’s sense of humor is unparalleled, and not only does she keep everyone around her cracking up, but she uses her humor to teach staff, connect with kids, and put parents at ease. Whether she’s sharing stories from her travels to all seven continents, writing a poem about her cat mocha, or describing her favorite order at subway, Katrina can connect with anyone about anything! Because of this, she is consistently a fan favorite at whatever program she is working. Katrina’s “over the top” attitude perfectly aligns with our “over the top” department vision, and we are grateful to have her as part of our team!

A.B.C.D. AWARDS CHRIS CORKUM

Since 1984, Chris Corkum has been director of Chris Corkum’s Baseball Inc., the business he founded to blend his love of teaching kids with his love for the game of baseball. Anyone who can make a lifetime living from a boyhood game has got to be special – and Chris is just that – special! South Windsor has been honored to have Coach Corkum and staff, most of who are his past players, host his week long baseball camp at our Ayers Road Complex each summer for the past 28 years. His enthusiasm for baseball is contagious, and you will often see Coach Corkum in full uniform, but no less the gentleman. We are thankful for his dedication to teaching youth the skills of the game, but most importantly the love of the game.

JAKE DONALD

There is an all encompassing word to describe Jake Donald, and that word is steadfast. Sticking true to the definition, Jake is always “resolutely firm and unwavering”. Day in and day out at our camp programs, Jake comes in with a positive, encouraging attitude, no matter what he may face that day. Jake has been with our department since 2017, working on our inclusion team for the past two summers.

He is frequently navigating from one scenario to another, and helps us immensely in ensuring our mission of including and supporting all participants, regardless of their abilities. Jake, our “gentle giant” makes our department better just by being a part of it and just by being you.

JUSTIN HAUSER

Justin is a natural fit for an ABCD award winner.

Although he has only been with our department for 2 years, he quickly proved himself to be an energetic, ever-smiling, dependable member of our team. His passion for the department at 4th R, camp and special events is obvious and genuine.

When there was a director vacancy at 4th “R” in 2018, Justin’s leadership, reliability, and dedication to our department made him an obvious choice for the promotion!

Justin’s greatest attribute is his positive, joyful nature, and this makes him admired and respected by kids, parents, and staff. Justin has also been a tremendous help at our department’s special events, doing anything that is asked of him, even filling in at the last minute more than once to help make the event a success. He is consistently there to lend a hand, take on a project, or complete a task, and always with a smile! Justin tells us it’s easy for him to be so positive because he makes the choice to be happy each day. We are so fortunate that he chooses SWPRD as the place to share his enthusiasm, passion, and talents! To quote Justin…. “love it!”

ALAN MENASIAN

Our next ABCD winner is a man “behind the scenes,” though we would bet that nearly everyone here is familiar with his work! Alan is the owner of A.R.M. Screen Printing Company, and he is the man that prints our SWPRD clothing! If you’ve seen an 06074 shirt, a 4th “R” staff sweatshirt, a basketball jersey or a camp t-shirt, you can thank alan. Though it is his business, he routinely goes above and beyond to make sure we have what we need for each of our programs. He is always happy to share his expertise and recommend a specific t-shirt texture, material for a sweatshirt, or bring in samples so we can choose what best fits our needs. A current project for our department has him searching far and wide for a glittery gold ink for our 50th anniversary promotions (stay tuned!), and he is always happy to help. While working with the fastpaced, ever changing needs of our department may not always be easy, alan always gets the job done professionally, quickly, calmly and in style.

He literally makes our department look good!

MARISSA PERUCCIO

When Marissa first found out she was receiving this award, her first words were the infamous, “I’d like to thank the academy….” This funny banter is a true representation of the joy and humor Marissa brings to our department. But, it does not stop there! As the assistant director of our Adventure Unit camp, Marissa is a key piece to keeping the well-oiled machine going. Her organization and forward-thinking is unmatched, and she is continuously and confidently putting out fires before they have a chance to burst into flames. Her willingness to grow and learn is admirable, as she is eager for feedback and accepting of increasing responsibility. Marissa’s passion for SWPRD summer camp is evident day in and day out, and we appreciate her unwavering commitment to our department!

RON PIRES

Coach Ron Pires and his Boys’ Basketball Camp have been a part of our community for over 26 years.

His passion to develop youth basketball players is very evident when you step into his gym. In a camp of nearly 70 participants, he will not only know each child’s name by the end of the week but will usually give a nickname to each player. You know you’ve got a winner when kids don’t want to leave the gym when it’s time to go home! He amazingly continues to engage his former players with the important work of mentoring current youth and giving back to the sport they love. Wherever Coach Pires goes, there is usually someone who knows him by name and most likely has been positively impacted by his coaching and assuring personality. Coach Pires successfully guided the E.O. Smith High School boys’ basketball program for over 35 years. We are thankful he continues to contribute to our community.

HALL OF FAME The Hall of Fame Award is reserved for those exceptional folks who have dedicated themselves to Parks & Recreation exhibited over a long term. Specifically, it is “To honor and recognize those individuals who, because off their outstanding dedication, have contributed immeasurably to the establishment, maintenance and continuation of community parks and recreation in South Windsor.”

MATT GALLIGAN

Imagine it is 1996 and in walks our brand new town manager Matthew B. Galligan, not Gilligan, Galligan. I remember thinking to myself this guy’s a finance wizard, what’s in store for us? Well, we were a small department then – only 4 full time employees and an annual tax-based operating budget of $400,000 for delivering yearround receational programs.

Fast forward to 2019, and we have evolved and grown into a traditional Parks & Recreation departmemt emplopying 21 full time professional staff and over 200 part time and seasonal staff.

Our recreation division operates with a $3m self-supporting non-taxed subsidized budget delivering over 400 programs annually. Our tax supported parks division in addition to our operation in 2010, is responsible for the care & control of every inch of town owned property, parks, athletic fields & courts, pools, etc and they do so with an annual budget of $1.5m. Quite a difference I’d say! We are what and who we are because of that “Financial Guy” who walked into town hall 23 years ago!

Matthew B. Galligan

Why? Because Matt supported Parks & Recreation. Because Matt believed in Parks & Recreation. Because Matt paved the way for our special revenue recreation fund that now provides over 400 annual programs independent of taxation. Because Matt had faith in me and my staff to provide top-notch programs, services and parks.

This is especially special to me as I have cherished our terrific working relationship. Matt has enabled me to grow in my role as director and advance my career beyond what I ever imagined, and for that I thank him.

FRANK MACCHI

Frank has been involved with SWLL for 31 years serving in numerous capacities including offices on the board, including president. You know someone is truly committed to the love of the game when they remain involved long after their children have aged out of the program!

He is still actively coaching the astros major legue team that he started with 23 years ago. He has been his life-long friend, al maximino’s “left-hand” man the entire time. Frank is also well known in town as “the voice” of little league opening day! And, the largest borrower of our portable P/A system!

In addition Frank successfully coached for years in Parks & Rec. Youth basketball so much so that he had nearly poerfect attendance at his weekly practices with his high school age teams - now that’s an accomplishment! He informs me that he has no intentions of letting up!

AL MAXIMINO

Al has been active with the SWLL for 29 years serving in numerous capacities including offices on the board, including president, a position he currently holds and which he has held for the last 24 years. Like Frank, Al is truly committed to the love of the game as he too has remained involved long after his children have aged out of the program!

Al is best known as the “voice of reason” for the oldest and largest youth sport organization in town. He leaves the microphone up to Frank.

Al also successfully coached for years in Parks & Rec. Youth basketball often going head-to-head for bragging rights with life-long friend Frank Macchi. It certainly made for some very interesting play-off games!! In partnership with Parks & Recreation, Al is responsible for the Little League Complex evolution of improvements that have made the home of SWLL the envy of visiting teams and mimicked by many other towns! He too has no intentions of giving it up any time soon!

HALL OF FAME

SOUTH WINDSOR COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

Back in 2003 with little to no capital funding for park improvements, I went out on a limb and proposed the concept of creating a non-profit park foundation to develop a boundless playground with features that were accessible to children of all abilities. I proposed that notion to none other than Matt Galligan. Being the financial wizard that I knew he was he totally supported the endeavor. We all knew a playground of this magnitude would be a great asset to the town but would require hundreds of thousands of dollars and we needed a fund raising mechanism.

Enter Mr. Roy Normen, former town councilor and agent with national executive service corps (nesc) a non-profit specialzing in helping other non-profits with start-up and consultation services. Together Roy and I co-founded what became known as the South Windsor Community Foundation. Their mission statement: “The South Windsor Community Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life in South Windsor for all residents of all ages by furthering the development of community based programs and projects”.

Current Board of Directors includes: Ralph Alexander, Scott Andrusis, Saud Anwar, Michael Blezard, Cile Decker, Kevin McCann, Michael Mundo, Roy Normen, John Rucco, Janice Snyder, Joe Wood.

Accomplishments for which they served as fiduciary or provided grant funding in support of Parks & Recreation projects and programs include: MFP Kevin’ Kourt Denfeld Playground Monday Night Social Club Festival of Lights SW Community Band Down to Earth Garden Club Friends of SW Bark Park S.W.W&W.W. Most of these would not have been possible were it not for the generosity and commitment on the SWCF!

main entrance to the east on Sullivan Ave. to a secondary access point to

the west side of the property on West Road, an observation/picnic gazebo, fishing pond stocked with blue gill and large mouth bass and lots of wildlife

to observe and enjoy from blinds provided on site. Please respect the resident

NEVERS PARK: 137 acres located on the corner of Sand Hill and Nevers Road. Facilities include

We provide a wide variety of athletic instruction and leagues, educational classes, culturally enriching options, before and after school programs, special events, and referral services to young and old. We also maintain 14 individual public park properties on a total of 893 acres that feature 43 athletic fields, 3 playgrounds, 16 miles of trails at 20 different locations, 61 community garden plots, a skate park and a dog park ; 17 open space parcels ; and 17 public building grounds. The increased growth of the town has given way to increased participation across the board in all of our programs and at all our facilities. The area of greatest growth and public demand in need of supplemental financial support are our community-based special events like our summer concert series, Resolution Run, and Fishing Derby to name a few.

Sponsorship does not just mean dishing out dollars. Your business may wish to provide in-kind services to supplement an event or program of your choice such as catering, transportation, printing, or even a venue.

Your business may wish to provide promotional give-a-ways and you may have just the right product for the participants in a specific program or event, like sports drinks, energy bars, water, apparel, prizes, etc. Or your business may wish to go the traditional route and provide financial support to help defray the cost of a program or event. Whatever your inclination, we can custom-fit a plan that works for both of us!

Volunteer Opportunities

Last, but not least, another way to involve your business in our community is through volunteerism. Although we are fortunate to have 22 full time staff and 200+ part time and/or seasonal employees throughout the year we still rely on dozens of volunteers to deliver over 400 annual programs in an affordable fashion. These beneficial supplemental volunteer hours are available for things like park clean-up efforts (see page 48 for our “Pride in OUR Parks” program), distributing 30,000 plastic eggs at our annual egg hunt, serving as a tour guide for the annual Haunted Torch Walk, or parking cars at one of our many special events.

PREVENT MOSQUITO BITES! The most effective way to avoid getting sick from viruses spread by mosquitoes when at home and during travel is to prevent mosquito bites.

Mosquito bites can be more than just annoying and itchy. They can spread viruses that make you sick or, in rare cases, cause death. Although most kinds of mosquitoes are just nuisance mosquitoes, some kinds of mosquitoes in the United States and around the world spread viruses that can cause disease. Mosquitoes bite during the day and night, live indoors and outdoors, and search for warm places as temperatures begin to drop. Some will hibernate in enclosed spaces, like garages, sheds, and under (or inside) homes to survive cold temperatures. Except for the southernmost states in North America, mosquito season starts in the summer and continues into fall.

1. Shredded paper: Shredded paper is very difficult to sort and ends up getting mixed in with other baled materials such as plastic to be sold. The paper is considered contamination and devalues the bale. Shredding paper also shortens the papers fibers.

We have adopted the “What’s In? What’s Out?” campaign to help our recycling efforts.

2. Plastic Bags: Plastic bags can be recycled but not with single stream recycling.

When the bags enter the sorting facility they get wound around the equipment to point where the facility has to be shut down so that the bags can be cut out by hand.

This is inefficient and labor intensive!

3. Loose bottle caps and lids: Like plastic bags, loose bottle caps and lids can jam processing equipment requiring the facility to shut down. Bottle caps can be properly recycled if the cap is placed back on the container.
