CAPSTONE PROJECT - BETWEEN

MUSEUM OF THE HANDMADE

C O N T E N T S P A G E 2

I consider myself to be a designer who curates spaces to connect with the senses of the user. Combining function with beauty is a design philosophy that has stemmed from my time designing joinery, and only grew when working in the industry. My study journey has been a long one, totalling 7 years upon completion, and because of this, it has also been full of exploration and experience. Observing how people interact with spaces and how a space can connect with the users has shaped me into a designer that places the user at the heart of my design processes. Alignment, as well as warm and organic materiality, evoke a calming connection between the user and interior, which is important to have within what can be a chaotic life. Developing connections has been a common theme throughout my previous work, and has become the focus of my Capstone project this year. During my project, The Museum of the Handmade, I drew on the sites brick making history to form a connection between my design and its heritage.

(Residential Interiors Team) Assisted with Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documentation stages of Multi-residential and Single Residential projects. Working one on one with Project Leads on single residential projects, where managing my own time with their time was important when keeping to project deadlines. Applying joinery knowledge to review joinery shop drawings, prior to construction of the joinery. Communicating with suppliers and external consultants to gather necessary information when specifying products and curating design details.

Greeting walk-in customers in the showroom, and pitching the services and design opportunities for their desired renovation. Site visits before, during and after construction of joinery to gain measurements of space and see existing room constraints. Project management of kitchen joinery and stone manufacturing, delivery and installation. Designing joinery for clients and then presenting designs. Then producing drawings that are sent for manufacturing.

Use Revit to model design elements, and document interiors. Create client presentations using Adobe InDesign.

This project aims the low confidence levels that young people feel when making new connections in person. This aim has stemmed from the growing research and findings on the effects of loneliness. Studies are finding that loneliness can cause people physical harm as well as mental. Studies have also found that people aged between 15 – 24 have had the largest decrease in in-person interactions over the past 20 years, with a 70% decline. The Millennial and Gen Z generations have lived through the shift to social media and dating apps through their teenage and early adult years, and are now dealing with superficial aspects to social media that carry through into the online dating process. Throughout the COVID 19 pandemic especially, social media and dating apps have been revolutionary for the dating scene, as they helped people stay connected, even when we couldn’t physically be with each other. However, the superficial and shallow nature of these platforms isn’t necessarily the best way to form meaningful connections. Surveys have revealed that someone’s personality, sense of humor and intelligence are the most popular qualities people look for in their partners. When profiles are curated and judged based on best appearance, we forget all the other human qualities that can be experienced in an in-person scenario. To try and break this cycle in society, I have designed Between to a place that provides young people with the confidence to form new connections in-person. I’ve achieved this by exploring a more open and inclusive approach to designing a space that gives confidences to users of the space the confidence to approach new social interactions. Further to this, creating a function within the popular dating applications Hinge, Bumble, and/or Tinder, that facilitates in-person matching would aim to additionally give confidence to young people to meet via a more constructive method of dating. I believe there are intentional efforts a designer can make to bring people together, even strangers, in an attempt to foster more meaningful connections.

To encourage young people to come to the space, the proposed spaces include a bar, wine and date section incorporating speed dating, activity spaces, installation spaces, a viewing point and the public spaces which forms link between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. Having activity focused spaces aims to spark connection between two people getting to know each other. FLI

The journey through the spaces will be representative of the stages of a romantic relationship. The beginning will therefore represent the exciting and intriguing moments of meeting someone of interest. As these two people move through the building, they can partake in wine tasting, bonding activities and view art exhibits, to discover more about their partners. These rooms symbolise the learning process in a relationship as two people start to feel comfortable around each other. The final journey through the building is the winding ramp that the couple walked down to begin with. This then turns into a garden with a indirect route to a view point. As couples embark of this last part of the journey, this signifies the conflict and resolution that occurs in the strongest of relationships.

The Museum of the Handmade (MOHa) is located on the corner of Station Street and Norcal Road, in Nunawading. Once the Daniel Robertson Brickworks, the site remains linked to its history with chimney covered by heritage overlay. Before halting production in 2014, Daniel Roberston was known for producing ceramic tiles, as well as bricks, in a unique and rustic form for 91 years/ Their production process was less mechanised, which resulted in no brick being the exact same shape or size. This museum appreciation for the ‘handmade’, connects with raw and organic bricks that were once produced. The art pieces exhibited at MOHa will therefore reflect this in the artists creative process. I have also drawn on the earthy and natural themes when curating the materially of the museum.
