The Hoblitzelle Foundation salutes the vision that made possible Southwestern Medical Foundation and its transformative impact on the life and health of our community. Congratulations to all of today’s visionaries as we celebrate the Foundation’s 75th anniversary.
We l c o m e to this celebration of our 75th year, and thank you for joining us in recognition of what is not only the story of Southwestern Medical Foundation, but your story as well. It is a history of a vision we share, and a future of excellence we can look forward to together. It began with a grand vision of bringing a great medical center to Dallas. Our founder, Dr. Edward H. Cary, set out on a successful mission to “inspire a great citizenship to greater deeds.” All of you here tonight are part of that “great citizenship.” So, we thank you. At Southwestern Medical Foundation, we have had the privilege to facilitate great performances of generosity over our 75 years, and we have been witness to virtuosos in the world of medical research, clinical care, and medical education. In 1939, we were created to rally our citizens in support of the highest quality health care possible in the Southwestern U.S. In 1943, the Foundation moved center stage and started Southwestern Medical College, now UT Southwestern. In 1949, the state of Texas authorized support for a second medical school, and the Foundation, with its assets, was chosen. Together, we have fostered a great medical center. With our support, UT Southwestern will continue to be a world-class resource in medicine, serving our nation for generations to come. A talented ensemble has come together to achieve a worthy goal, and it has surely been worthwhile. Let’s celebrate. Let’s applaud.

Karl Hoblitzelle, founder and owner of Interstate Theaters, several times organized plays performed by leading Dallas citizens in honor of Dr. Edward H. Cary, founder of Southwestern Medical Foundation. Mr. Hoblitzelle enjoyed performing with friends in amateur theatricals, complete with original scripts. Some took place in the Baker Hotel in downtown Dallas; others, at Dr. Cary’s home, on the occasion of his birthday. 2

When Dr. Edward Cary approached Karl Hoblitzelle with his vision of advancing medical education and scientific research in the Southwest, Hoblitzelle embraced the idea immediately. On January 21, 1939, Dr. Cary – joined by Hoblitzelle, E.R. Brown and Dr. Hall Shannon – obtained a charter for the establishment of Southwestern Medical Foundation. 7

sprague award recipients CHARLES CAMERON SPRAGUE COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS In 1991, Southwestern Medical Foundation created its Community Service Award to honor individuals in the North Texas region who have provided significant support to the improvement of medical education, medical research and patient care. The award was renamed in 1996 for Dr. Charles Cameron Sprague, president emeritus of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and chairman emeritus of the Foundation. Since its creation, the Charles Cameron Sprague Community Service Award has been bestowed on distinguished civic and business leaders who have given generously of their time and resources to make life better for others.

HO DIN award
In 1943, at the first meeting of the Board of Trustees of Southwestern Medical College, the Board voted to establish an annual award to recognize the medical student who best exemplified the ideal physician envisioned by the founders. The Ho Din Award was then instituted by Southwestern Medical Foundation in honor of Dr. E. H. Cary to recognize those who exemplify the unique personal qualities embodied in all great physicians – knowledge, understanding, and, most of all, compassion. Ho Din, which represents “the spirit of medical wisdom and human understanding,” has been a hallmark of excellence at UT Southwestern for more than 70 years and is the foremost honor bestowed on outstanding seniors. In special circumstances, it may be awarded to faculty members or administrators who have exemplified the spirit of Ho Din through their service to humanity.

“The Awards Committee views the candidate both for manhood and scholarship and places manhood before scholarship...” Remarks made in praise of Charles Carrico, a Ho Din Award recipient in 1961. Dr. Carrico was first in his class and selected for his spirit of compassion and his wisdom. These personal attributes found their place in history on November 22, 1963, when Dr. Carrico was on duty in the Parkland ER.
“As you depart tonight to begin your life work, you symbolize the best that medicine of today offers the people of our nation.” Remarks made on the occasion of Joseph Goldstein’s Ho Din Award in 1966. Dr. Goldstein would later win the first Nobel Prize for work done in Texas, with his research partner Dr. Michael Brown. Their discoveries led to an understanding of cell receptors and to the development of statin drugs that have helped save millions of lives.
I can think of no more outstanding example of the spirit of wisdom and human understanding than the work of the medical community in Dallas. Since the founding of Southwestern Medical College in 1943, Southwestern Medical Foundation and this community have supported and helped to build the highest quality and most compassionate care possible for the citizens of the southwestern United States. Dr. Don Seldin arrived in Dallas in January of 1951. Only 31 at the time, he came from Yale School of Medicine, attracted by the chance to start his own nephrology program at Southwestern Medical School. Dr. Seldin went on to become Chair of Internal Medicine at the school. Widely revered as one of the greatest chairs of Internal Medicine in American medical history, he is considered by many the intellectual father of UT Southwestern.

The Foundation has supported the construction of the new William P. Clements, Jr. University Hospital which opened in December 2014. This $800 million facility, designed around the needs of patients and their families, is as innovative as the scientific discoveries UT Southwestern is known for around the world.
Former Texas Governor William P. Clements, Jr. made a $100 million gift to Southwestern Medical Foundation in June 2009 to be used for transformational purposes.
The Zale Lipshy Hospital, built in 1989, is undergoing its own transformative process, supported by the community, and will be reopened as a leading neuroscience hospital, with the intention (in the words of current UT Southwestern President Daniel K. Podolsky, M.D.) of “prioritizing neurosciences from the most basic aspects of research right down to innovations and delivery of care today.” The philanthropy of Harold Simmons has played a major role in the transformation of medical education, research, and patient care. Lifetime contributions to Southwestern Medical Foundation and the UT Southwestern medical center associated with Mr. Simmons total nearly $200 million.

LEGACIES Southwestern Medical Foundation recognizes and honors all of our leaders, board members, and donors over the years, including H.B. Sanders, an original board member and first legal counsel to the Foundation. His spirit of service and generosity has been carried on for decades by his family, as well as by his law firm, which became part of Hunton & Williams, continuing his notable legacy.
H. B. Sanders’ legacy includes his sons Charles A. Sanders, M.D., a distinguished graduate of the medical school, and Judge H.B. Sanders, Jr., who contributed to the discipline of medical jurisprudence at the school — a curriculum first established by his father. Indeed, the story of family legacies is an honored and treasured part of the rich history that has made the impact of Southwestern Medical Foundation lasting and extraordinary.
