HONORING A LEGACY: WHAT WOULD JOANNE DO? FOR 25 YEARS,

Joanne Gallinghouse’s name followed the word “publisher” on this magazine’s masthead. This month, you’ll notice a different name in that spot. It’s not a change we knew was coming. But on May 24 when Joanne passed away following complications from surgery, our ship was left without a captain.

Fortunately, Joanne had a firstmate. Laura Tobin has served as vice president of Gallinghouse Marketing + Creative for 17 years, working alongside Joanne to guide the public relations and marketing agency. She has stood in for Joanne before. When Joanne’s husband was sick and they moved to Houston for his treatment, Laura steered the ship, and she did it well.

So it’s Laura’s name that you’ll see listed on page five.

She is now Sophisticated Woman’s associate publisher.

Laura has also been named president of Gallinghouse Marketing + Creative. The changes come with the full support and endorsement of Joanne’s family, who want both businesses to continue to thrive.

Laura will work with Lorie Hollis, the magazine’s sales director, Pam Hendrix, our art director, and myself to carry out Joanne’s vision for this magazine. Because Joanne was such a hands-on leader, we knew her expectations for the magazine. Each month during magazine production, we discussed everything from which photo would grace our cover to how best to punctuate an awkward sentence.

In the months before her death, we talked at great length about the look of the magazine and how to make it refined yet approachable. We talked about generating content that resonated with our readers, that gave them something to look forward to each month. Joanne wanted to tell the Northshore’s story through compelling narratives, beautiful images and useful information. And fashion. Lots and lots of clothes and shoes and fabulous hats, because that’s what Joanne loved.

It’s true. We have big—and stylish—shoes to fill.

Joanne’s passing is the biggest challenge we will face as a company. But she set an outstanding example for us to follow. Joanne possessed a singular creativity, an enviable work ethic and an unrelenting passion for helping clients solve communications problems. She taught us to always strive for excellence, while reminding us to have a little fun in the process.

We will honor Joanne’s legacy by continuing the publication she nurtured for a quarter of a century. We will miss her immensely, but we’ll meet the challenge bravely, just like she would have done.

And if we ever question our path, all we have to do is ask “what would Joanne do?” Chances are, we already know the answer. She was after all, the original sophisticated woman.

I met Joanne when I took a position on the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival board of directors. When I later became the festival’s event coordinator, Joanne and I began working together on a near-daily basis.

She was involved in every facet of the event, from helping pick the poster artist to the layout of the tents on the Columbia Street. I was the new kid on the block, and we didn’t always see eye to eye. Because I wasn’t around for the inception of the festival, I didn’t know that she was one of the founders until after our first few disagreements.

Fortunately for me, I quickly learned of Joanne’s complete dedication and passion for the festival, and what an amazing source of knowledge and instinctual leadership she was. Those early disagreements became an inside joke between the two of us, and we became friends. We spent many years and countless hours together making sure that every part of the festival was in place, and those are memories that I will treasure as long as I live.

My heart is broken over the loss of my dear friend, Joanne Gallinghouse.

Let's Talk Dairy WRITTEN BY JOY FELDMAN, NC JD

WE ALL GREW up sporting a white milk mustache and thought we were all serving our bodies well. We even tell our children to drink their milk so that they will be big and strong when they grow up. And why would we think otherwise? Milk has always been marketed in a way that makes us all believe it is good for us. We believe it is the “best” source of calcium, right? Can you think of other sources of foods that are rich in calcium?

So, let’s get our facts straight and talk dairy truth. Dairy does contain calcium, but due to the way your body processes these foods, you may not actually be getting the benefits of calcium.

Here’s the truth.

1. Research done by a professor of nutrition at Harvard’s School of Public Health examined dairy consumption in 10 countries and showed “that the consumption of calcium from dairy was the lowest in Hong Kong and Singapore, where they also reported the lowest rate of hip fractures. Conversely, the United States consumed the most amount of calcium from dairy and ranked the highest incidence of hip fractures.”

2. Dairy can be inflammatory. A 2015 issue of The Journal of Nutrition concluded that “eating dairy foods increased low-grade inflammation in a small sample of German adults.”

So let’s try to skip the dairy. There are some wonderful substitutes for moo juice. Almond milk, cashew milk, hemp milk or rice milk are wonderful options that are nutritious and tasty too! And these wonderful, calcium-rich foods will boost your body’s health. Try kale, broccoli, bok choy, sardines, salmon, white beans, blackstrap molasses or turnip greens.

You will see the difference in your body and in your health.

all there is to know about the Declaration of Independence? Here are seven facts you may not have known about the historic document.

1. IT WASN’T SIGNED ON JULY 4

Only two men signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4. The signatures of John Hancock and Charles Thomas, president and secretary of the Second Continental Congress, respectively, were on the first version.

Most of the other 54 men signed on Aug. 2 after a more legible version was written on parchment.

2. ONLY 12 COLONIES VOTED IN FAVOR ON JULY 4 On July 4, representatives from 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of independence. Delegates from New York didn’t officially give their support until July 9 because their home assembly hadn’t yet authorized them to do so.

3. HUNDREDS OF COPIES DISTRIBUTED IN THE COLONIES After the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, hundreds of copies were printed at the shop of John Dunlap, a Philadelphia printer. The copies were distributed to the colonies. Known as “Dunlap broadsides,” only 26 of these copies exist today.

4. THE LIBERTY BELL SIGNALED THE FIRST PUBLIC READING The ringing of the Liberty Bell drew the public to Independence Hall on July 8, 1776 to hear the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.

The iconic crack came decades later, following years of heavy use.

5. GEORGE WASHINGTON STARTED A RIOT As commander of the Continental forces in New York, George Washington read the document aloud to a crowd gathered at City Hall. Roused by the reading, the crowd tore down statue of King George III and had the metal melted down and shaped into 42,000 musket balls for the American army.

6. IT CONTAINS A MYSTERIOUS NOTE A simple message is written upside-down and across the bottom of the signed document: “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776.” No one is certain who wrote the words, but it’s assumed they labeled the document which was frequently rolled up for transport.

7. FORT KNOX SERVED AS A TEMPORARY HOME In the weeks following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the signed Declaration of Independence was moved to Fort Knox. Under the supervision of armed guards, the document was packed in specially designed containers, padlocked and sealed with lead. Secret Service agents accompanied the Declaration of Independence by train to Louisville, Kentucky where members of the 13th Armored Division escorted it to Fort Knox. It stayed there until 1944.

FOUR YEARS AGO, Gian Durand seemed to have it all. A successful entrepreneur, she had built a diverse businesses portfolio since receiving her JD from Loyola College of Law in 2004. Beginning with Loving Hearts of Louisiana, a behavioral health and personal care assistance resource for the underserved in Orleans and Lafayette parishes, she expanded into the food service and utilities sector. She was the mother to healthy, infant twins Gian and Jonathan, and had just moved into her dream home.

Yet, Durand soon came to understand she was paying too high a price for her success.

The outdoor living area and swimming pool that was so appealing when she purchased the property was rarely used. She didn’t entertain friends and family as she had expected. She didn’t get in the pool with her children. One day she decided that she no longer wanted a life where her outdoor oasis was more than something she glanced at through the window while she was on the phone conducting business. She realized she wanted to jump in the pool.

She reassessed her life and her businesses.

She reflected on her career: the decisions, opportunities and mistakes she made along the way. And, in refocusing her attention on the things that mattered most to her, she understood the detours along her journey were not meant to distract her from her path.

They were meant to guide her back to where she began—in behavioral health management and childhood advocacy.

“One of the most important things I learned is that I am a connector,” Durand said. “I am not only able to draw from my diverse experience to create successful programs, but I am also able to leverage the relationships I’ve built with businesspeople across a variety of industries. I have the connections to pull people and resources together to help the underserved in our community.”

Durand refocused on Loving Hearts of Louisiana by expanding its service area. She chose to work within one segment of the population first to avoid the distractions and frenetic pace that had previously defined her life. “While the need is great in every segment, I decided to start where I could make the most substantial impact—school-age children.”

Together with healthcare providers and several charter schools in New Orleans, Durand developed a holistic program for elementary school students that encompasses physical, academic and medical support services. The PAM (Physical, Academic and Medical) program will be launched as a pilot program in eight select charter schools this fall.

“I am fortunate to be in the position to speak for the less fortunate and to have my voice heard. Whether through specialized programs like PAM or through larger advocacy efforts, I have the determination and tenacity to get things done,” Durand said.

In fact, it is that tenacity that has provided Durand with a national platform upon which to spread her message. She was chosen and appeared on the BRAVO network’s reality series, Southern Charm New Orleans this past season.

Having taped on only six separate occasions, she was surprised to discover how prominent her appearances were in the storyline during the eight-week series. “The experience was not what I expected, but I have no regrets,” she said.

“I stayed true to myself and my principles and that came across on the screen. I had no idea that I would have so many people reach out to me as a result of the show.”

Durand wants to use this expanded following to speak to the many women struggling to balance their career and family, while still taking care of themselves. “I want to be a resource and source of support for businesswomen. There is no road map to success. But there are shared experiences we

can use to help each other navigate through our personal journeys," she said.

"We don’t have to feel isolated from one another, and we should not be afraid to ask for help. There is a psychological price of entrepreneurship, especially for women.

Unfortunately, there is still a stigma attached to mental health. Yet, asking for help is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength.”

Noting that it is almost impossible to make effective decisions in times of crises, Durand stresses the importance of self-care. “All too often, women sacrifice their physical and emotional needs in their effort to try to do it all. Not only do we tend to neglect our own wellbeing, we can also play a part in eroding it,” she said. “We need to accept failure as part of the learning process and not be so hard on ourselves when it happens. Some of us know fire just by seeing the flames. Others need to touch it to be sure. We need to forgive ourselves if we get burned.”

Durand is a firm believer in destiny. She said giving things over to a higher power has freed her from impatience and fear—two elements that inhibit growth. “It is important to be open to new experiences. Not everything in life is going to happen according to our own plan or timeline. I have learned to enjoy the gift of life that God has given me, to let the unknown be beautiful. The life I thought I would have when I started my career 15 years ago is not the life I have. My life is so much more fun.”

CONTINUING TUTORSHIP IS the legal process where a court appoints a guardian with the legal authority to continue to make decisions and manage affairs on a child's behalf after the child reaches the age of majority (18). If you have a child with an intellectual disability, you should consider if continuing tutorship may be in your and your child’s best interest, as this process is available only during a short timeframe.

Specifically, your child must be at least 15 years of age, but cannot be over 18 years of age to proceed. Once the child turns 18 years of age, you can no longer ask for a continuance of tutorship. Instead you will have to proceed with a more complicated and expensive legal process, an interdiction.

While an interdiction proceeding requires hearings, formal appearances and additional evidence including expert testimony, the continuing tutorship process is, customarily, a pleading-based process.

For example, to proceed with a continuing tutorship, documents must evidence that a child's cognitive abilities are at a level of twothird or less than an average child’s cognitive abilities at the same age. That evidence is usually provided by doctor affidavit or standardized test results. And, the coroner of the parish must also concur in the request for the continuing tutorship appointment.

Then, upon the court’s agreement to the request, the tutor receives the appointment and takes an oath and the decree is recorded in the parish conveyance and mortgage records. Thereafter, the decree provides the tutor with continued authority to consent to medical procedures and educational plans and to obtain medical, educational or other records of the child with the intellectual disability.

That song may describe a couple taking a walk in the mountains, but those lyrics certainly do not describe anyone living in South Louisiana. We are sweltering, and our plants are wilting. What are we to do?

My mother, Evelyn Talley, was a member of the Covington Garden Club for 50 years and presented horticulture hints to the group for many of years. I will share some of her suggestions with you.

Mulching, watering, spraying and fertilizing are the “big four� for combating summer in our area. Mulch all beds with leaves, pine straw or pine bark to conserve moisture and to keep weeds from sprouting. For all plants watering is vital. Be sure to saturate thoroughly to avoid bringing tender roots to the surface. Continue spraying roses every seven to 10 days.

Give azaleas a final feeding in order to produce beautiful spring blooms.

Bugs and insects aid us in the summer for they help keep nature in balance. Bees are needed to pollinate flowers. Earthworms are welcome.

They aerate the soil by transporting particles from deep burrows to the surface. Their presence signifies that the soil is in good condition. Lizards, toads and frogs are friends of the gardener. Birds will tackle fruit and vegetables, but most of them are insect eaters.

So when it's unbearably hot and you don't think you can tolerate another summer day, sing a few Christmas songs and you may feel a bit cooler.

soothing days of summer, people give themselves to something that gets lost 75 percent of the time during the rest of the year. In summer, individuals, couples and families make the time to connect through laughter, tugs of war, travel, adventures and misadventures of all sorts. Money and time are readily invested to be together.

When life becomes less than satisfactory or perplexing, people schedule to see me in session.

Often one of my questions is, “What did you do last summer, or what are you looking forward to doing this summer?” The light returns to their eyes and their faces lighten up as they talk, interrupting one another to tell about the fun they had or are hoping to experience.

How important is this quarter of time? Look around you; likely, the pictures you bothered to frame are from those splishes, splashes and images captured in summer.

How do you get enough summer to bask in it’s warmth the whole year through? Pictures do help. Call each other and remind each other. Display your souvenirs of rocks, feathers, spoons, placemats, fans, magnets and all the other things you picked up in the moment.

Affection for summer is a shared love that has long been celebrated by artists.

Musician John Mayer wrote, “‘Cause a little bit of summer is what the whole year is all about.”

Novelist Henry James penned, “Summer afternoon–summer afternoon; to me these have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”

Former First Lady Jackie Kennedy said, “Whenever I was upset by something in the papers, Jack always told me to be more tolerant, like a horse flicking away flies in the summer.”

VENTURING OUT INTO the business world on your own can be incredibly scary but also liberating and exciting. Starting your own business gives your purpose a platform and an opportunity to leave your mark on the world. There are some clear advantages of being your our boss: setting your hours, dress code, the business’s location and type of people you work with.

But those luxuries will not come easily.

This very magazine you are reading was an entrepreneurial endeavor for Joanne Gallinghouse. She had a vision and felt the Northshore lacked something in the publications market. Through hard work and integrity, Sophisticated Woman has served as a guide to the Northshore community since the 1990s.

If you are feeling inspired by Joanne’s legacy, here are some things to consider when starting your own entrepreneurial journey: • Research your market: It’s important to have a strong and in-depth understanding of what your potential clients’ needs are. Find out what the market is lacking and how you can offer unique solutions to fill that gap.

Take the time to truly learn what the roots of the problem are.

• Have a business plan: Once you’ve gained insight on the market, you should create a business plan regardless of your venture.

A business plan will help keep your business

on the right track to achieve the purpose you set out to do. It will serve as a road map for everyone involved and measure the growth the business is making or needs to make. Be sure to keep plan straight forward, realistic and conservative.

• Plan your finances: Like your business plan, you’ll want to have a firm grip on your finances. How much should you set aside for marketing? As a general rule, startups should allocate 7-8 percent of their actual or projected revenues to marketing. The marketing budget should be split between brand development costs (website, social media, sales collateral) and the costs of promoting your business (advertising campaigns, events). Knowing how much you have to spend on marketing is critical; even more critical is how you spend it.

When investing financially in your business be sure to spend your money wisely.

It can be easy to spend on items that might not truly be a necessity to your business.

Jamaica: Gateway to Flavor WRITTEN BY ELLIS V. LUCIA

THE AIRPLANE DIPPED lower and lower, almost clipping the coconut palm, palmetto and ficus trees, then bounced to a landing. The hand-painted welcome sign across the prefab building, the terminal at the Montego Bay Airport, proclaimed it the “The Gateway to Jamaica.” The spiky yucca plants with stiletto yellow blades did not seem welcoming.

Some background: my father was invited on the inaugural flight from New Orleans to Jamaica. While I don’t recall the details of his trip, I do remember the brightly colored toys he brought home as souvenirs.

The red and yellow carved wooden airplane with a bright blue propeller was mine. Exotic Jamaica was forever in my head.

Fast forward to a formative young adult, fascinated with cinema and the possibilities of mass communication. The Toulouse Theatre in the French Quarter was a repertory movie venue at the time and a frequent stop for me. One of the features, the cult film The Harder They Come, featured reggae artist Jimmy Cliff and the movie stirred those exotic rhythms in my head. The film is about a poor, rural Jamaican boy (Cliff) who leaves home after his grandmother dies, moves to the city to find work, sees a spaghetti Western and dreams of a job and success in the music business. The movie doesn’t end well for the protagonist, but the soundtrack was a breakthrough for reggae as a genre. The takeaway of the movie—the tropical setting, the underlying social theme and the punctuated syncopation of reggae—were enough to rekindle my interests.

I bought a ticket to Jamaica and a three-day pass with press credentials to the Reggae Sunsplash II music festival.

Near the airport, I rented a motorcycle, cinched my backpack of cameras, strapped my travel bag to the seat and headed for Lilliput, a beachside dive recommended by a friend. My days were spent interviewing and photographing dreadlocked islanders in seaside shanties while nights were reserved for reggae concerts highlighting Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley and the Wailers.

The poorly lit stage was a photographic challenge, but as the weekend progressed, it became clear that, through his music, Marley had become the spiritual, cultural and social voice of his country.

Reggae is to Jamaica what the blues and jazz are to the United States.

With the discovery of this new music, I was also introduced to a revelation in food. Spices and combinations of flavors I had not considered.

Allspice, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper, garlic, a rainbow of hot peppers, onions: from the moment I arrived and was served curried goat and coconut rice for lunch, I knew I was in for a cuisine that was every bit as unique as the sound and passion of reggae.

It’s fairly simple to make your own Jamaicainspired dishes. So I’ll share with you a taste of that culture with this recipe for Montego Bay Chicken.

It’s easy to prepare on the grill, thereby keeping the summer heat out of your kitchen.

Montego Bay Chicken Ingredients: 1 large onion, roughly chopped 4 green onions, coarsely chopped 3 seeded chilies, Serrano or Scotch bonnet 1 tablespoon sliced ginger 3 cloves garlic 4 teaspoons ground allspice berries 1 tablespoons five-spice powder 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg 1 tablespoon fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar 2 teaspoons sea salt 1 tablespoons black pepper 6 ounces soy sauce 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 8 chicken quarters (about 8 to 10 pounds) (use bone-in breasts if you substitute white meat)

Directions: 1. Combine first 12 ingredients in a food processor and blend to a paste.

With the machine running, slowly add the soy sauce followed by the oil.

2. Pour the contents into a large non-reactive bowl, dish or bag.

Add the chicken and marinate in the fridge overnight or at least four hours.

3. Remove chicken and allow it to come close to room temperature.

4. Preheat the grill.

5. Cook on the high/hot side of charcoal or gas grill to brown the chicken.

Then lower the heat and move the pieces to the cooler side of the grill.

6. Close the cover and finish cooking over indirect heat to an internal temperature of 170 degrees in the thickest part of the thigh or breast, usually about 40 minutes total.

a sophisticated woman, it was Joanne Jemison Gallinghouse. An entrepreneur, business leader and community advocate, she helped shape the business community on the Northshore.

She founded Gallinghouse & Associates in 1986, at a time when a woman-owned business, much less an advertising agency owned by a woman, was a rarity. St. Tammany was a rural parish of quaint towns, country roads and farmland. Native New Orleanians, Gallinghouse and her husband, Walter, had fallen under the spell of the Tchefuncte River, and Covington quickly became their adopted home.

Gallinghouse earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at LSU followed by a MBA at Southeastern Louisiana University. The advertising agency was a natural evolution of her desire to own a business and her interest in human behavior and motivation. She began by doing what she did best—putting together a team of talented professionals who could achieve clients’ communications goals. Over the last 32 years, she built a stellar reputation for customer service, visionary leadership and strategic thinking.

Gallinghouse started several professional and organizational endeavors to address unfulfilled needs within the community. She launched Sophisticated Woman magazine as a vehicle to celebrate women in business. It wasn’t her first foray into publishing however; nor was it the first time she addressed a local need. When she was a young teenager, she pulled together friends from her street and created the “Green Acres Do-Gooders Club.” They would go door-to-door asking neighbors if they needed help with chores such as weeding gardens or raking leaves.

Gallinghouse would then recount their activities on her Smith and Corona typewriter, make copies of the “Do-Gooders” newsletter and distribute it in mailboxes.

Drawing from her creativity and love of the arts, Gallinghouse was instrumental in the

creation of the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival and Leadership St. Tammany, two organizations that have continued to grow and improve the quality of life on the Northshore. “Joanne’s commitment to making her community a better place was equaled only by her love for the extended artist-family she assembled over the years,” said Sarada Bonnett, the festival’s event coordinator. “The fact that the event now attracts over 60,000 visitors each year is a testament to her vision.”

Longtime colleague and president and CEO of the St. Tammany Parish Tourist Commission Donna O’Daniels credited Gallinghouse with helping brand the area as a tourist destination. “She was a great mentor to me. For this North Carolina native who had only recently moved to the Northshore, she taught me a greater appreciation for St. Tammany, for Louisiana, and for the people who live here.”

While most people knew Gallinghouse as a successful businesswoman, it was only a small portion of who she was. Her family and friends were the most important things in her life. The oldest child and only daughter, she was the apple of her father’s eye and a beautiful reflection of her mother. She absolutely adored her siblings Michael and Eddie Jemison, and she loved their children as her own. She began a holiday tradition of baking with the children in the family when her niece, Terri, was a child.

Over the years, it grew to include Eddie’s children, Daisy and Jasper and, most recently, Terri’s daughter Violet.

“Joanne was determined that distance would not separate us. She made sure we spent quality time with one another and when we did, Joanne was far more interested in learning about what we were doing in our lives than discussing hers,” Eddie said. “She had a genuine curiosity about others that made everyone feel special.”

Gallinghouse had a zest for adventure that poured over into her friendships. She was a member of the Divine Protectors of Endangered

Pleasures and paraded down Bourbon Street as a DIVA during Mardi Gras. She took girls’ trips to New York City and spent many weekends at the beach with her “tribe.” Her spirit was infectious, and she filled every moment with laughter. And, if anyone ever wondered how she convinced her husband to dress as an Elvis impersonator and accompany the DIVAs, she had a lot of practice. As a child, she was known to dress up her younger brothers, pop them in a wagon and parade down the street throwing beads.

Gallinghouse was universally known for her eye for fashion and accessories, and she enjoyed dressing those she loved as well. She and dear friend Moe Clary spent their Saturday mornings getting their shopping fix on. “The common refrain when I’d arrive home with bags of clothes or show up at a party with a new outfit or new shoes was ‘Jo made me buy it,’” Clary said.

Gallinghouse had an abundance of friends and a large family, but it was her husband who took center stage in her life. The two travelled extensively, often in the plane Walter piloted, and they lived life to the fullest. Together, they experienced extraordinary trials and tribulations and came out stronger for it. She was his steadfast advocate following his battle with leukemia. They were constant companions until his death in 2017.

When Gallinghouse had knee surgery on May 16, no one could have imagined that surgical complications would claim her life nine days later. From the constant vigil at the hospital to the hundreds of people who paid their respects following her death, the outpouring of love and admiration offered great comfort to her family. Those who loved her were not there because of her business acumen, but because of her heart. Even in her final days, she remained a role model and an example of a life well lived.

the English language. Not only was she mindful of the words she chose to communicate her ideas, but she was a stickler for grammar. When we received an updated edition of the AP Stylebook, Joanne showed it off like a kid on Christmas morning. She got a kick out of social media posts that showcased how comma placement or a typo could change the context of an entire statement.

And, the Oxford comma—we all knew that was dangerous territory. (She hated it!)

As we continue to celebrate Jo’s life, it is ironic that we struggle with a question of redundancy with regard to those who knew her and those who loved her. When it comes to Joanne Gallinghouse, these terms are one and the same.

It was impossible to know her and NOT love her.

She was a kind and generous soul: a dedicated wife, loving daughter, loyal friend and selfless mentor. At first glance, she may have appeared to be intimidating. Her tall frame, stylish wardrobe and perfectly matched accessories could make the most confident of us envious. Yet, more striking than her appearance was her ability to make you feel totally at home. She had a wonderful laugh.

And you were guaranteed to hear her laughter at least once during every conversation.

The grace she showed over the last few years throughout her husband Walter’s illness and death was admirable. Despite the toll it took on her, she remained connected with her family, friends and employees. She was genuinely interested in other people’s lives.

She knew when we needed advice or when we just needed someone to listen.

While our time with Joanne was mostly spent inside the office, the lessons she taught went far beyond the practical applications of advertising, marketing and publishing. She touched our hearts and inspired our minds, just as she did with everyone she met.

There is an Irish saying that hangs in our office kitchen: May those who love us, love us, And those who don’t love us, May God turn their hearts, And if He doesn’t turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles, So we’ll know them by their limping.

But this was never a worry for Joanne. No one she knew had a limp.

Three Dark Crowns

is the story of three supernatural sisters: Mirabella the elemental, Katharine the poisoner and Arsinoe the naturalist, each destined to compete to the death for the throne of Fennbirn, a dark and enchanted island some would say is cursed. “Three Dark Sisters all fair to be seen, two to devour, and one to be Queen.”

I felt this book was like a beating drum, building up tension, captivating all the way to the explosive ending. I appreciated the unique characters, how each sister was so different from the other, which made it impossible to pick my favorite. Beautifully written, compelling, unable to put down, fans of Suzanne Collin’s The Hunger Games or Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard are sure to devour Kendare Blake’s Three Dark Crowns trilogy. The second book in the series, One Dark Throne, is just as delicious as the first, if not even more so. The third installment, Two Dark Reigns will be released in September.

To celebrate her, we've come up with some smokin', dazzling, marvelous and sophisticated whiskey drink potions...perfect for any diva!

2 ounces whiskey ½ ounce simple syrup 2 dashes Angostura bitters Orange peel 2 sprigs of dried rosemary

1 ½ ounces whiskey 2 ounces club soda 2 ounces ginger ale Lemon twist for garnish

Add the whiskey, simple syrup and bitters to a glass filled with ice. Add a piece of orange peel into the mix. Light the rosemary sprigs on fire and hold the flaming rosemary over the glass, but don’t put it in the glass. Cover with a cocktail shaker for 10 seconds. The flame will go out, leaving the drink infused with smokiness.

Pour a shot of whiskey into an ice-filled highball glass. Fill with club soda and ginger ale. Stir, and garnish with a twist of lemon.

1 ½ ounces single malt scotch ½ ounce coffee liqueur ½ ounce espresso coffee Dash vanilla syrup

ounces rye or bourbon ounces Campari ounce sweet vermouth Italian sour cherry

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice. Stir. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon zest.

Put all ingredients into a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously. Pour into coupette, and garnish with grated dark chocolate.

Day Center Opens as Part of Safe Haven Initiative WRITTEN BY CHELSEA ADAMS

THE NAMI ST. TAMMANY Day Center, the first physical component of the parish’s Safe Haven initiative, opened in mid-June. Located in Mandeville, the Day Center offers support and recovery-oriented programs for people living with mental illnesses.

Day Center services are offered to clients free of charge in a nonclinical setting, said Tom Rowan, the center’s director.

“We operate on a ‘clubhouse’ model where clients have a say in what happens here,” he said. “It’s not a matter of what I want to do for the clients. It’s a matter of what clients want and need.”

The center is designed to be welcoming and comfortable rather than cold and institutional, Rowan said. There’s ample space for communal dining, meal preparation, group meetings, games, conversation, showering, laundry and exercise. Two serenity rooms offer a place where clients can go if they need separation from the group. Computers, where clients can work on educational endeavors or job preparation, are forthcoming.

Renovation of the 3,800-square-foot facility was funded with a Community Development Block Grant. A grant from Baptist Community Ministries funds staff training and the operation of the Day Center’s programming.

Much of the facility’s furnishings were donated by St. Tammany businesses and individuals, including Carlos Sanchez, New Heights Therapy, Painting with a Twist, Just Picture it Framing, Forstall Interiorscapes and 25 local artists. Exercise equipment was donated 34 Sophisticated Woman | July 2018

by Chenier. Additionally, client artwork already appears on the center’s walls, and more will be added as the program grows, Rowan said.

Nick Richard, executive director of NAMI St. Tammany, said the center replaces two similar centers that closed years ago.

“The center is run by individuals who have mental illness, who have walked in their shoes,” Richard said. “They’re here for support but also to let them know others who have experienced what they’re experiencing and landed on their feet.”

Peer Support Specialists Roxanne Skal and Keya Robinson offer clients support and guidance. Most clients who participate in self-help groups stay out of the hospital, hold jobs and live more independently than those who don’t. In fact, research shows that re-hospitalization rates over a two-year period decreased from 60 percent to 19 percent among people who participated in a peer group bridging service.

Richard said the overall goal of the Safe Haven initiative is to remove the silos typically associated with mental healthcare. Instead, Safe Haven will provide a single-entry point for service and address the mental health needs of not only St. Tammany and the surrounding region, but also serve as a replicable model for the state.

The Day Program operates from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on weekdays.

Lakeview Regional Named Top Workplace Lakeview Regional Medical Center, a campus of Tulane Medical Center, has been awarded a 2018 Top Workplaces honor by Nola.com/TheTimesPicayune. In addition, Lakeview Regional won the Work/Life Flexibility Award, which recognizes the company that understands its employees have lives away from the office. The list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through a third-party survey administered by research partner Energage. St. Paul’s Faculty Attend Science, Theology Seminar Six members of the Saint Paul's faculty will travelled to Notre Dame University in June for a week-long seminar on science and religion. The seminar was sponsored

by The McGrath Institute Science and Religion Initiative and featured lectures by scientists and theologians as well as collaborative discussions and workshops.

Teachers from across the nation collaborated to develop strategies and methods for dispelling the myth that these disciplines are inherently at odds with each other.

$13,000 in Scholarships Awarded to 13 St. Tammany Women Thirteen women received a total of $13,000 in scholarships from the Professional Women of St. Tammany in June. More than 70 applicants were reviewed and graded based on need, educational goals and community involvement. PWST has awarded over $140,000 scholarships to women in St. Tammany Parish.

Recipients include single mothers, women working two part-time jobs as well as college and high school students. “We are so pleased to be able to make a difference in the lives of these women who prove every day that their persistence and drive can help them reach their goals. Our organization works all year to make this happen,” said Barbara Cranner, chairwoman of PWST’s scholarship committee.

Junior Auxiliary of Slidell Receives MAG Award The Junior Auxiliary of Slidell won the coveted MAG award for outstanding community project of the year for their “Pay It Forward” initiative which helps provide sports equipment for children in need. Two equipment drives were held earlier this year, and more than a dozen children were able to fully participate in practices and games. Additional equipment drives are planned for the summer. North Oaks Gives Free Athletic Physicals More than 1,300 student-athletes received free physicals, courtesy of North Oaks Sports Medicine. The screenings fulfill Louisiana High School Athletic Association requirements for participation in athletic programs. “The quality and thoroughness of the physicals are topnotch. In fact, we had seven student-athletes who did not pass this year and were referred to their personal physicians for follow up," said Hank Tierney, Ponchatoula High School’s head football coach.

Obviously, we want our student-athletes to pass their physicals, but we would rather identify issues on the front-end so that they can work with their personal physicians to resolve the issue."

Schmitt Honored by Knights of Columbus Saint Paul’s graduate Kyle Schmitt, son of Glen and Jeaneen Schmitt of Mandeville, was selected as the diocesan and state champion for the Louisiana Knights of Columbus Catholic Citizenship Essay Competition. Schmitt, an honors graduate, served as president of the Lasallian Youth Leaders and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He will attend Louisiana State University.

Goodreaux Receives Savoie Scholarship Beau Goodreaux, a graduate of Archbishop Hannon High School, received the Monica Lynn Savoie Scholarship for 2018. The scholarship is given in memory of the 1997 Hannan graduate who passed away in 2002. Hannan had 130 graduates at their 2018 graduation ceremonies.

Sixteen Graduate from YEA Northshore Tangipahoa The 2018 Young Entrepreneurs Academy successfully graduated 16 students during a special graduation ceremony at the Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Center in May. These junior high and high school students worked diligently to design and build their businesses from the ground up, culminating in an investor panel where they were awarded funds to put their business plans into action. “"These kids learned a lot in the YEA program,” said William Joubert, executive director of the Southeastern Louisiana University Small Business Development Center. “It was very satisfying to see their confidence grow. While some will not launch their products, they have skills that will follow them the rest of their lives. Our community hit a home run with this program."
