Another year has come to a close, and we are embarking on a new year full of hopes and possibilities. As for me, the last five months presented several challenges. Just after purchasing the magazine, my husband passed away. Trying to deal with this unbelievable loss and a new business wasn’t easy. Then out of the blue without any warning on December 9th, my best friend of 42 years passed away in her home. She was like a sister to me. We were in

Through it all, I learned one great pearl of wisdom from my friend’s daughter. She said, “Sometimes, when my mom was alive, we focused more on the bad times, the kind most families deal with. But now that she is gone, I can only remember the good times. I wish I had done that more when she was here.” This year, may we all be more forgiving to our loved ones; life is too short to carry grudges. Keep your head up and always look for the silver lining.

DIRECTIONS
1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1. Heat a large pot over medium-low heat and add the olive oil and butter. Add the onions and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until the onions are translucent for about 6 to 8 minutes.

2. Stir in the artichoke hearts and cook for another 5 minutes.
2 garlic cloves, minced ¼ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked pepper 2 14-ounce cans artichoke hearts in brine, drained and rinsed
3. Add the vegetable stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the soup until the artichokes are very tender, about 15 to 20 minutes. They will begin to fall apart and almost melt into the soup. 4. Carefully transfer the soup to a blender (place a towel on top) and blend until smooth. Pour the soup back into the pot.

5. Stir the cream and crème fraiche into the soup. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for about 30 minutes. It will reduce a bit. Season with more salt and pepper if needed. Also, stir in more cream if needed. 6. Serve the soup with toasted baguette pieces on top and spritz with a lemon wedge.

32 ounces tomato juice 1 lemon, juiced 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1 lime, finely sliced 5 ounces vodka ¼ teaspoon celery salt 1-2 teapsoons Tabasco, to taste
Mix the cider, orange zest and ginger in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let steep for 20 minutes. Stir in the brandy and honey. Pour into heatproof mugs and garnish with a lemon slice and cinnamon stick. Serves 4.

Add eggnog, pineapple chunks and coconut rum to a blender with a few ice cubes and whip until frothy. Pour rum into a glass mug and add eggnog mixture. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and a pineapple wedge, then sprinkle with nutmeg.
Combine whiskey, Swedish Punsch liqueur and cinnamon syrup in a glass and stir. Slowly pour in hot coffee. Top with fresh whipped cream. Dust with chai masala powder. January 2024 | Sophisticated Woman 17

It’s refreshing to meet a young woman with a vision for her life’s work. It’s even more inspiring when it’s TWO innovators working together to improve healthcare delivery to their patients. Impressive enough to have excelled in medical school and completed difficult residencies, Dr. Ashley Mays and Dr. Laura Roan are now using their shared experience as emergency department physicians for a higher purpose. When choosing her medical career, Dr. Roan’s passion for learning led her to consider many options including physical therapy, research and even veterinary care. But it was her inherent leadership qualities that steered her towards medical school. “I didn’t want to be involved in only a small part of patient care. I wanted to treat the whole person without needing permission from others to do my piece.” While many roads were appealing, another difficult decision came when it was time for Dr. Roan to choose an area of focus. “I like a hands on and rapid paced environment,” continues the accomplished physician, “so I chose EM/IM, a five-year program combining emergency medicine and internal medicine. It was intense, but I got great training in a broad skillset, and now I have experience in a wide range of practice settings including inpatient hospital medicine, clinic, emergency medicine, and providing home-based medical care for seniors.” Also sharing the need and ability to address a wide range of patient needs, Dr. Mays explains why she was initially drawn to work in the emergency department. “When I was doing rotations in med school, I didn’t find one core area that I felt would be fulfilling long term, but I found pieces of each appealing. Those pieces came together for me in the ER. Minor surgery, trauma, orthopedics, cardiology, neurology, psychiatry – we see everything on a wide variety of patients, and I’m able to make quick decisions and take action.” Despite the appealing aspects of emergency medicine to each of these dynamic caregivers, both experienced drawbacks of the system. Dr. Mays explains, “The emergency department is designed to treat acute illness and injury, but people also come to us for the wrong reasons. Through no fault of their own, many have primary care physicians on paper, but when they seek an appointment, they can’t get scheduled in a timely manner and feel the ER is their only option.” Dr. Roan agrees, adding, “The system is definitely broken. One issue is the lack of accessible primary care providers. The cost and time spent on things that go into billing and claims in a traditional setting makes it difficult to practice medicine in the most beneficial way to the patient. x Warren Montgomery believed that every moment in his life was the time to do the right thing. He was taught as a child to remember that truth was worth fighting for, even if no one stands with you. While at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, he attended Young Life Ministries.

Warren accepted Jesus Christ as His Savior, which set the foundation for his life’s journey. He continued attending Young Life through college which greatly strengthened his faith and encouraged him to look forward to the path God planned for him. After law school, Warren moved forward into positions that would eventually prepare him for his final destiny here on earth. He sought God one step at a time and learned from Romans 8:28 that “In all things God works for the good of those that love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” His path took him to France, Mexico and Guatemala, where he learned to fluently speak those languages. He volunteered for the Reagan campaign in 1979 and remained in Washington as a lobbyist for the Department of Labor. He later returned to New Orleans and became a U.S. Attorney. At that time, he began to attend a group called “Friday Night Fellowship.” It was here

The home was everything they had wished for. As the front door opens, one step inside envelopes you into a realm of warmth and cordiality that is totally tangible. The foyer floor was constructed with wide planks of heart pine taken from the warehouse district of old New Orleans where many commodities were collected from the port in the early 19th century. Immediately eye-catching is the stained staircase banister leading upstairs which was purchased from an antique mansion in the French Quarter. Off the foyer to the left and right are spacious living and dining rooms, also floored with the same heart of pine. Farther down the hall, a few steps down lead you into an immense den, revealing spectacular beams, supported strongly by metal trusses, rising to the top of the vaulted ceiling. The oversized room is simply breathtaking and imbues a sense of magnificence. The same heart of pine was used for the mantel over the fireplace, which displays an extra wide hearth. The den paneling is solid wood acquired from St. Louis. The red bricks adorning the floors in the den, kitchen and breakfast areas are reclaimed from a 100-year-old hotel in Jackson, Mississippi, which probably stood either during or immediately following the Civil War when the Confederates prepared for the battle in Vicksburg. The huge kitchen boasts two stovetops, a must, since they both loved to cook. There is also a hidden wet bar tucked behind folding doors, which match the kitchen cabinets made from 150-yearold cypress. The chandelier over the breakfast area was designed by Julie Neil of New Orleans, known for creating custom lighting that gives birth to exquisite, historic and unique picturesque architecture.

Thus, the McCloskey’s decided to name their home “The Line.” The front gate is in St. Tammany, but the house actually sits in Washington Parish. From Pre-Born to Pre-School
Finding out that you are pregnant is usually a joyous and exciting event in a woman’s life. But when the pregnancy is unplanned, it can be a terrifying, hopeless and lonely moment. Almost 40 years ago a group of people from our community set out to create a resource center for women facing an unplanned pregnancy. They felt strongly that women in this situation needed love, compassion, and support. Through their tireless efforts, the Northlake Crisis Pregnancy Center was born. It started with a box of pregnancy tests, some dixie cups and a listening ear. Today the Northlake Crisis Pregnancy Center is one of the longest standing non-profit organizations on the Northshore and has helped approximately 12,000 women providing free services such as pregnancy tests, ultrasound, pre-natal education, counseling, and material assistance. This year alone, they have distributed over $80,000 of supplies to women and children in need. As a pro-life ministry, the Northlake Crisis Pregnancy Center has always felt that encouraging women to choose life is not enough. Their slogan is “From Pre-born to Pre-school.” Moms and dads can come monthly to receive assistance until their child turns 4 years of age. The Northlake Crisis Pregnancy Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization funded completely by the generosity of this community. This means that they are not bound by government funding restrictions and are free to help anyone in need regardless of circumstance. In a time where Louisiana has received much criticism of how it treats pregnant women, St. Tammany can stand proud knowing that we have funded a ministry that offers love, support, compassion, and tangible resources to pregnant women in crisis.
