Sharing & Caring

AS IT IS for most, the holiday season is my favorite time of the year. It’s a time of sharing, caring and celebration. What I cherish most is the time I get to spend with those I care about.

But for many, the holidays can also be stressful. Harboring resentment or holding grudges, whether it's a small argument or not talking for a decade, can truly be exhausting! By choosing to forgive, we are embracing a gift much greater than any present that can be put under a tree. Remember to take a moment to put things in perspective and treat others with kindness.

When it is time for gift giving, check out our creative wrapping ideas and support your local businesses by shopping our Gift Guides on page 8. There’s something for everyone on your list! Following our Gift Guides is a festive tribute to holiday fashions on page 10. Celebrate the season as you get ready to step out and sparkle in style!

Holiday festivities also require good food and drinks! On page 16, our Iced Holiday Fruitcake and Mix & Mingle Cocktails are sure to put a smile on any Scrooge’s face.

One great way to support your local favorites is to help them win The Northshore’s Best! Check out some of our past winners on page 18 and get ready to cast your vote beginning December 1.

On page 22, our Enterprising Woman cover story features Reba Weymouth and her welcoming medspa, Timeless Rx. As a seasoned certified nurse practitioner, read about how she guides her patients to be the best version of themselves.

Our home feature is truly an Entertainer’s Delight. This Old Covington cottage's renovation is a spectacular example of making old new again. And, on page 42, read about St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services' innovative efforts lead to recordbreaking animal rescues, and how they can continue to make a significant difference with your help.

At Sophisticated Woman Magazine, we wish you a Merry Christmas and the happiest of holiday seasons filled with joy, peace and love.

Making Spirits Bright

The Holiday Season is upon us and it truly is the most wonderful time of the year! The parties, the family gatherings, the decorating – and of course, the gift giving are all part of the celebration.

On the Northshore, we are fortunate to have a wide range of options for holiday shopping and dining. We hope you enjoy browsing our Holiday Gift Guides to see fun and festive inspirations, as well as trying some creative ideas to wrap them all up!

From upscale boutiques and unique gift shops to gourmet food, art and beauty, check out some delightful ideas and put that gift on your list! There's even something for your furry friends!

At Sophisticated Woman, we wish you and yours the very best for the holiday season and hope you enjoy this time to deck the halls and celebrate the spirit of giving.

good things come in creative packages!

MONTHS OF SHOPPING can turn into minutes of blissful mayhem and piles of paper in the middle of the floor during holiday family gatherings and gift exchanges. Searching for the perfect gift wrapping paper to coordinate with your decorations can be daunting as well as expensive–all to just be crumpled up and shoved into a giant trash bag. Why not try something different this year when it comes to wrapping your gifts? Unique and thoughtful presentations that dazzle and delight can also become keepsakes and hold many special memories of celebrations. Here are 10 creative alternatives to traditional gift wrapping that can add an extra special sentiment to your holidays!

1. Baskets – Everyone loves a gift basket. Local thrift shops usually have baskets in all shapes and sizes. Add some cute tissue paper and a fabric bow and you're all set.

2. Wallpaper – Leftover wallpaper scraps can be put to use instead of being discarded. This unique idea takes your gift-giving presentation to the next level and adds a nostalgic flair to any gift.

3. Newspaper – Use the black and white stuff or grab the comic section for more colorful wrap. Use some simple red twine and a sprig of evergreen to create a classic, yet fun look.

4. Tins or Jars – Mason jars make the ultimate gift container. Grab a reusable tin or can with a lid, and they work especially well for food gifts.

5. Reusable Net Bags – There are many tutorials online that will show you how to whip up gift bags of all sizes using net or cheesecloth bags. No tape required! Just gather the fabric and finish it off with beautiful ribbon.

6. Fabric Scraps – Not handy with a sewing machine? Then use fabric scraps instead. Gather the fabric around your gift and then tie it off with a gorgeous ribbon. Burlap is especially rustic and charming, and satins and lace can add elegance and personal flair.

7. Pillow Cases – Inexpensive pillow cases are a great alternative for larger gifts. Tie them off with a tassel cord for an innovative and useful alternative.

8. Maps – Maps can add a classic, vintage flair to your presents. Use them to wrap a gift for the world traveler on your list or to even suggest a visit or special vacation.

9. Towels, Blankets or Scarves – Wrap up your kitchen-themed gift with a set of dish towels or nestle baby gifts inside a soft, baby blanket. Vintage scarves from a thrift store also make a stunning presentation to your fashionista friend.

10. Feed Sacks – Feed sacks are the perfect wrapping for the shabby-chic folks on your list. Burlap sacks are a creative way to naturally present your gift. Add fresh lavender or holly berries to your gift to put a twinkle in anyone's eye.

Accessorize yourself with all of the season's best to mix and mingle. Whether is understated elegance or over-the-top "look at me" statement pieces, add the perfect accent to your going-out ensemble.

Timeless Rx

THERE'S AN IMMEDIATE vibe when entering Reba Weymouth’s welcoming medspa. Upon walking into Timeless Rx, the first thought is, “Is it always like this?” The uplifting mood is set by an energetic staff hosting a stream of happy patients and guests amidst sleek yet eclectic and inviting décor.

Reba Weymouth ENTERPRISING

Being The Best Version Of Yourself

POPULATED WITH A VARIETY of ages and styles representing different walks of life — from sharply dressed businessmen to multitasking moms with teenage girls — Reba Weymouth's welcoming reception area reflects the widespread appeal of the philosophy she applies to herself and shares with patients. “Today, there’s no reason not to be the best version of yourself. We guide patients to take control of their health by giving solutions that are tested and safe. Along with our weight loss program, our hormone therapies help give men and women their life back. It’s an age-old desire to regain one’s vitality, stamina, mental clarity, and mobility of youth, and I know it’s my purpose to give that timeless gift.”

Reba, a seasoned certified nurse practitioner with experience in cardiology, infectious disease and hospital medicine says her goal is to offer something for everyone. “We integrate Western and preventive medicine to address things like metabolic syndrome and sexual health. And, we offer a menu of rejuvenating skin and body procedures using stateof-the-art laser treatments, injectables and fillers, micro-needling, hair growth stimulation, laser hair removal, acne treatment and more. It’s extra busy today because it’s Weight Loss Wednesday. Each year we grow with leaps and bounds because of our incredible success stories. The response and the impact we’ve had over the past 10 years is immense.”

Reba’s daughter and Practice Manager, Madison, is a stunning example of one of those success stories, having lost over 100 pounds on the program. Reba knows firsthand that such a huge transformation has been life-changing for her daughter, greatly improving her confidence and health, along with energizing her interactions with her children and patients at the office. “Being able to make such a meaningful difference in my daughter’s life is a blessing that benefits her, my grandchildren, and our work here. Many of my patients become like family, and I can help achieve that same success for them. Helping as many people as I can to take control of their health and get a new lease on life has become my mission. It’s fulfilling in a way that I never thought possible growing up.”

Against the odds, Reba found an exceptional inner strength and worked diligently to overcome a difficult childhood and early adulthood. “I think the need to heal myself by healing others is why I became a nurse in the first place and why I keep pushing myself to grow and do more. I learned that always waking up with a positive attitude was the only way I would survive. To this day, there are always trials and tribulations, but the attitude to live through hard times and make yourself better gets you through it. I’m deeply grateful for the lifelong support of my brothers who were always there for me. And I simply couldn’t have done any of this without my rock, my husband Stephen.” Reba explains that when she was in a particularly dark place, it was Stephen who motivated her to go back to nursing school 28 years ago because of his faith in her to meet that difficult challenge even while caring for their blended family of five children. Years later, he would encourage her to further develop her talent and vision by pursuing advanced training at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, with the dream of opening Timeless Rx.

In 2012, Reba opened Timeless Rx under the direction of Dr. John Simon. Since then, she’s expanded to a larger space, grown her staff to 12 including two established providers and two aestheticians, and will soon open a new office.

cover story Sophisticated Woman | December 2022 – January 2023 ~ continued on page 24 ~

“My two providers, Candice Wild Goscha and Michele Accardo have 17 years of nurse practitioner experience between them,” says Reba. “Candice shares my strong desire to help people feel their best. I’m also pleased to announce I’ve chosen Michele to lead the new Denham Springs office. She’s been a patient since the beginning and best-suited to further our mission.” Michele adds, “I’m excited about my new commitment to wellness on a personal and professional level, and to be part of the evolution of Timeless Rx.” Of her decision to expand towards Baton Rouge, Reba muses, "It’s not my personality to be satisfied with the status quo. I have to keep building and reaching more people. This is my legacy that will one day be Madison’s. She shares my desire to make a difference in people’s lives, and I couldn’t be more proud of her.”

In her off time, Reba cherishes celebrating and making memories with friends and family. She and Stephen love entertaining in their Mandeville home where many a holiday, birthday and special occasion has been celebrated with him grilling to the strains of his classic rock vinyl collection. The private backyard paradise they’ve built is decorated with Reba’s original artwork, spiritedly reflecting their love of LSU, the Saints and their travels. Time with their 11 grandchildren is also precious. Every Wednesday night, the couple’s two granddaughters who live locally enjoy a crafts night and sleepover where Reba shares her talents with them. Both Reba and Stephen agree that family togetherness and time spent with friends are their most treasured gifts.

Reba’s values and work ethic are an inspiration to her daughter, her staff and her community. She sums up her philosophy saying, “What you do is who you are. When you find your passion, it’s not work. It’s a reflection of who you are. Building a fulfilling and successful career takes tenacity. There are pitfalls and bills to pay, but you keep doing it because you believe in it. Whether it’s social impact, higher standards, financial freedom or mastering your legacy, loving what you do can make a world of difference in yourself and others.”

E.J. Fielding: Designing Your Funeral

Families come to us because they know we’re dedicated to excellent service and have the highest integrity. We’re proud to assist you in designing your funeral.

Services To Honor A Life – A funeral or memorial service, whether traditional or contemporary, is the first step in healing. It’s about bringing loved ones together at a time of loss. Your choices include the place of celebration, day of the week and time, musical selections, prayers to be said and songs to be sung. We can also arrange tribute videos, personalized printing, memorial websites and live funeral webcasting.

Caring for Physical Remains – Usually, people are clear on their choice of burial or cremation. Most loved ones have told someone how they wish to be cared for. But it can be a hard decision for some families, especially when the wishes of the deceased were never clearly stated. Please know we’re here to help you with that decision. If you’ve chosen burial, the casket is chosen followed by the selection of vault or desired cemetery location. If cremation is your choice, the next decision will be whether the remains will be placed in a mausoleum niche or buried on cemetery grounds.

We look forward to using our generations of experience to help you create the most memorable and meaningful funeral to honor your loved one.

Since 1992, E.J. Fielding Funeral Home has been helping families in their greatest time of need. We are a family-owned and operated funeral home offering full-service funeral arrangements, cremation and burial services in Covington, LA. We proudly serve families of the bereaved and honor their loved ones. We service the Mandeville, Madisonville, Abita Springs, Folsom, Bush, Lacombe, Metairie, Kenner, and Jefferson areas. DR. BURKENSTOCK'S SKIN • BODY • HEALTH

DR. KELLY BURKENSTOCK is proud to offer a new innovation in early cancer detection via a blood test. This breakthrough technology is quoted in the Cleveland Clinic’s Health Essentials publication as “a game-changing technique to catch more than 50 kinds of cancer in one simple blood test.”

Dr. Kelly Burkenstock explains that of cancer cases resulting in deaths, currently only 29% are found by the five routinely used screening tools: PSA tests for prostate cancer; mammography for breast cancer; HPV and Pap tests for cervical cancer; colonoscopy for colorectal cancer; and X-rays and CT scans for lung cancer. “Finally, we have an earlier detection means which can result in preventing a significant number of deaths from cancers including highly lethal ones like ovarian cancer," she adds excitedly.

Dr. Kelly Burkenstock also notes, "For example, pancreatic cancers typically show no signs or symptoms until they’re very advanced. When found, patients usually have only three to six months to live. Cancer detection blood tests will be able to save many of these patients’ lives because the disease can be found so much earlier. The breakthrough with these new early cancer detection tests is that they detect free-floating cancer cells in the blood."

28 Sophisticated Woman | December 2022 – January 2023

For Early Cancer Detection

Dr. Burkenstock elaborates, “They can also identify the origin or type of cancer. It’s an amazing advancement for those at risk – especially those with a family history of cancer. While no test – even mammograms or colonoscopies - are 100 percent, this test has an accuracy rate of over 90 percent. Of course, this tool is used in addition to, and not instead of, the five main cancer screenings. Science predicts that by 2030, cancer will surpass heart disease as the leading cause of death in humans. This technology really is a game-changer as it gives us a way to find cancer in earlier stages when it’s more controllable and curable. While this test is not currently covered by insurance, our clients feel it is an investment in their health and peace of mind. We’re delighted to handle this simple, yet potentially life-saving test right in our offices.”

Extensively trained in both Eastern and Western techniques, and with a fellowship in Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, Dr. Kelly Burkenstock offers a host of services including bio-identical hormones, science-based weight loss programs, hair restoration, Botox®, fillers, custom-designed supplement regimens and much more. She confidently and warmly shares her wisdom to help clients achieve beautiful skin and fabulous health for life. Dr. Kelly is also proud to have her son, Dr. Austin Burkenstock, join the practice.

Dr. Austin Burkenstock is a Board-Certified Internal Medicine Physician specializing in treating adults 18 years and older for a broad range of diseases including high blood pressure, thyroid conditions, obesity, diabetes, asthma and more. As an internal medicine practitioner, he can prescribe preventative medicines to ensure patients enjoy maximum health, and also refer patients to specialists as needed while following their care and attending to their overall care holistically. “Throughout my training, I saw firsthand how internal medicine can treat a wide range of diseases while allowing the physician to treat patients throughout their life span. I chose this specialty to allow me to form long-term relationships with patients, making sure they remain healthy through each of their office visits.” Along with Austin’s many medical, professional and compassionate assets, Kelly says she will enjoy another value of his addition to the practice. “He brings a focus on preventative internal medicine that will allow me to expand my anti-aging and holistic offerings even more. I’m particularly excited about expanding the success we’ve had with my DNA weight loss program and cutting edge European anti-aging techniques to more and more clients. Along with offering our weight loss breakthrough and now this new cancer detection technology, we’re going to Paris this year to further research exciting new beauty trends, because Europe leads the curve. They’re 10 years ahead of us in beauty, anti-aging and hormone innovation.”

WE GOTTA FACE the music! There's a sound we don't want to hear - the sound of the envelope opening. What am I referring to? The avoidance of opening bills and notices. One of the side effects of financial illiteracy is the reality of financial irresponsibility that is a result of not learning about finances and HOW MONEY WORKS.  This is not an indictment - just an awareness. Financial literacy is not taught in most schools, nor is it the topic of most family dinner conversations. These reasons would seemingly give someone a financial illiteracy hall pass, but the world doesn’t work that way.

We, the AK Legacy Foundation's Women-NBusiness Non-Profit Organization, are here to do our part! We are aware that an estimated 44% of women do not have an emergency savings account. We have launched a "One Book-At-A-Time" Drive in an effort to eradicate financial illiteracy and provide financial education and business development in the form of free books, webinars and live events. This is possible by donations from the kindness of strangers, commitments from our WNB VIP Exclusive Memberships and our annual fundraising business conference.

Partner with us and learn more about our mission to educate and improve the quality of life of our communities, one book at a time. You may also request your FREE copy of the HOW MONEY WORKS book by visiting our website: AKLegacyFoundation.org.

Dr. Tod Aust: Hope for the Hopeless

DR. TOD AUST is an interventional pain management physician with a passion for what others describe as hopeless causes. “Because I can take more time with patients than is the norm in many volume-based practices, I’m referred complex injury cases, long-term chronic pain cases with overlapping issues, and cases that have repeatedly eluded effective treatment – the worst of the worst.”

Aust advocates ‘Pain Relief without Pain Pills’ saying, “It’s of utmost importance to educate patients that pills aren’t the answer. Opioids can’t heal an injury or cure arthritis, and any initial relief is often short-lived when their tolerance builds up. My job is to listen and ensure them that this is a long-term partnership where if they won’t quit, I won’t quit. The physical exam and patient interaction are key - not just looking at an MRI.”

Aust says that difficult cases often involve several pathologic processes causing overlapping pain in one area. This is challenging because treatment of one problem does not relieve the pain from the others, so the pain remains if only one source of overlapping pain is treated. A plan must be made for each problem, and the patient must understand the processes causing overlapping pain. “By partnering with patients in their care rather than dictating treatment based on imaging alone, 95% of our patients achieve improvement. I’m proud of our dedicated team and the compassion they extend to patients who are desperate for relief, and we are honored to contribute to research making real advancements in the field.

Dr. Aust Interventional Pain is located at 740 Gause Boulevard in Slidell. For more information, contact 985-377-1884 or visit austpain.com.

Holiday Flora

AS THE DAYS get shorter, plants can add color to cheerfully brighten your surroundings. Chase away darkness with one or several of these easy plants:

• Poinsettias are tropical plants in shades of red, white, pink and marble. Keep in a sunny location and raise humidity by keeping in a saucer of pebbles.

• Frosty Fern, or Spike Moss, is great for a desk-dweller or home office. Keep the soil of this evergreen lightly moist by setting in a bowl of room-temperature water for 15 minutes.

• Christmas cactus is a succulent offered in a wide array of colors. Keep in a bright window, watering when dry by checking the soil every 7 days.

• Rosemary is an herb that blooms small, white or pale, lilac flowers, but this cheery evergreen boasts an amazing scent. Keep in bright light and evenly moist.

• Amaryllis have large blooms atop stout green stalks from bulbs that also come in a multitude of reds, pinks, apricots, whites, or candy cane schemes.

• Norfolk pine mimics a full-sized Christmas tree where space is limited. Delicate branches are decorated best with small bows, LED lights or other light-weight ornaments.

• Paperwhites are another bulb that can be grown indoors. Mostly white in color with 12-14 inch stems, these do best in the cooler locations of the home.

• Cyclamen are cool-weather plants that optimally perform in medium-diffused light and watered by placing in a shallow bowl for 15 minutes, then placed on a saucer of pebbles. Choose from a varied array of colors.

• Anthurium are red and green epiphytes with heart-shaped leaves typically grown on other plants, but easily kept in simple, clear vases of water. They prefer bright, indirect light.

Also consider planting any one of the beautiful winter flowering camellia japonicas or camellia sasanquas. Native yaupons feature bright red berries with dark green leaves reaching heights of 20-30 feet, or choose a weeping yaupon holly that hovers around 12 feet tall or a dwarf variety. The American holly, with its bright red berries, is the classic holiday plant known for decorative wreaths. All of these species attract birds and other wildlife by offering a food source and protection.

Celebrate this holiday season with beautiful florals and greenery. Happy Growing!

A Visionary Renovation Becomes An Entertainer's Delight

WHEN LISA AND PAUL McGOEY’S youngest child began attending LSU, following in her parents’ footsteps, the couple embarked on their own new adventure. Now empty nesters, they sought to exchange their sprawling Old Metairie home for a more laid-back setting nearer to Paul’s Mandeville business. He explains, “We dropped off our daughter on Saturday and moved in on Monday. That was in 2016, but we had purchased the property in 2015 and completed our extensive, nine-month renovation project.”

34 Sophisticated Woman | December 2022 – January 2023 home feature
WRITTEN

Renovation indeed. While that word means ‘make new again,’ the couple was just as dedicated to showcasing the original character of the Old Covington structure (rumored to have the neighborhood’s first indoor plumbing) as to creating a unique sense of style that reflected their lifestyle. While Lisa pursued her legal career in New Orleans, Paul wore many hats in his well-known restaurant group. “Contrary to stereotypes, I’m happy to let Paul pick our homes’ locations and do all the design and decorating." ~ continued on page 38 ~

The home is an entertainer's delight that includes a commercial kitchen vent system and stove, along with room for two of almost every appliance.

36 Sophisticated Woman | December 2022 – January 2023 home feature

Lisa says Paul has an innate vision plus experience designing and furnishing all his restaurants, and a great eye for detail. "He envisions and executes ideas I’d never dream of. I’m happy to sit back and enjoy what he creates."

Amidst a casual but upscale presentation of wine and charcuterie, ever the gracious host, Paul describes the transformation from historic cottage to spacious entertainer’s delight. “We wanted a smaller property that still had personality. I knew this was it when I turned onto 10th Avenue to find this surprisingly familiar Uptown feel on the Northshore. We later learned just how in-demand this area is with its proximity to St. Paul’s and Downtown Covington.”

Reflecting his love of creating recipes for his restaurants, Paul laid out the two allimportant criteria for the home’s interior: a commercial kitchen vent system and stove where he could cook steaks with no smoke in the house, and room to entertain. “I knew I could make it work. We converted the back porch into the dining room, and where it had been, designed a real chef’s kitchen with commercial, stand-alone Viking refrigerator and freezer and room for two of almost every appliance including microwaves, dishwashers and ovens. We removed walls that defined small spaces like the tiny original kitchen and opened it all up.”

Weaved into delightfully meandering conversation about lavish Italian-themed dinner parties, cooking way too much food when the kids visit, and welcoming neighbors who crashed their first New Year’s Eve party, Paul continues describing the transformation. He both redesigned the home’s form to enhance function, and used art and architectural elements to combine sleek modern elements, quaint Americana and homages to the structure’s long history. “Two artist friends, Mitchell Settoon and Benjamin Bullen, helped me execute very unique and involved customizations. Throughout the house, we installed reclaimed, nineinch pine flooring, unfinished-side up, and roughly sanded and finished it to achieve a beautifully rustic look. Approaching the primary suite, you can see where two separate original houses were connected

forming a breezeway, which we converted to an office with walls meticulously distressed to look authentic."

Paul continues, "We compensated for the different house heights by taking the ceiling to the roof in the bedroom and adding metal-accented beams, also distressed to add character. We added oversized shower and closet areas by enclosing the addition’s porch and building-out a modern bathroom with a period-appropriate feel.”

“When we come home, the backyard is a retreat,” Lisa adds. “It’s private, birds are chirping, the pool and deck are relaxing, and best of all, it’s low maintenance.” The grounds boast two outdoor living areas, one graced with Meyer lemon trees and the other featuring the heated saltwater pool, connected by a covered deck adorned with arches creatively engineered from old railroad track. Of his favorite outdoor feature, Paul excitedly adds, “I always research extensively while designing, and when I found this fence on Pinterest, I had to build it. Its elaborate four-layer painting process beautifully completes the cottage-chic style while rendering the whole area secluded and stress-free.”

Now, transitioning to travel while visiting their children and North Carolina relatives, the McGoeys are leaving behind wonderful memories and the gift of a stunning, visionary renovation that will become the next residents’ entertaining dream. IT'S SAID THAT every dog has his day, and thanks to the tireless, innovative efforts of Animal Services, St. Tammany Parish’s dogs, cats and other assorted critters are being rescued at record-breaking rates! The shelter achieved an incredible 97 percent Live Release Rate in 2021 – an exceptional and uplifting contrast to 2016’s rate of 42 percent. That translates to a decrease in euthanasia from 2,310 in 2016 to just 142 last year. Animal Services Director Rob Bremer says, “With the support of Parish President Cooper, we’ve made drastic improvements including partnering with national groups and by getting parish council approval to implement policy changes. Those and other new programs are saving many lives and changing the way we can operate.”

Rob began as an animal control officer in 2014, was promoted to field supervisor in 2016, and in 2021, was appointed Director. His team has worked diligently towards a more progressive and compassionate course while maintaining public safety and community engagement. After completing Best Friends’ Executive Leadership Program and implementing lifesaving tactics they teach with the goal of creating no-kill facilities, Rob’s department was awarded the organization’s national Touchstone Award. “It’s a big deal,” says Rob. “The whole feel out here has turned from depressing to hopeful and rewarding. Even the landscape is welcoming with a new lighted sign, bright colors and upgraded play yards donated by Mardi Paws. We’re off the beaten path here in Lacombe but want the community to know we’re here for them and have made a fantastic turnaround.”

Rob explains the importance of offering resources to individuals needing options when faced with surrendering pets. “Sometimes, the situation is temporary. We encourage asking family for help, or we can assist in arranging a short-term foster. We also have Huntley’s Pet Pantry, an on-site food donation bin created by a compassionate Girl Scout to assist those in need. We have great partners like Wings of Rescue, who provide air transport, and Brandywine Valley SPCA where animals are brought to areas where there are more willing adopters than available animals. After the storm last year, we drove to Kansas City’s municipal shelter with 38 cats which they gladly re-homed to waiting families.”

Rob’s team also operates the Community Cat Program which saves lives and reduces overpopulation by chipping, vaccinating and fixing unsocialized cats and releasing them back to their home territory. Rob says the cats live out their lives while keeping other unfixed felines away, reducing the number of new feral litters. “The numbers are down dramatically, but for those brought in, we have more space and resources to socialize and home them. We also have a dog and cat spay/neuter voucher program, and Mardi Paws raises funds for our animals with extensive medical needs. We serve the taxpayer, still doing animal control and investigating and prosecuting animal cruelty, so our yearly budget is spoken for quickly. We always need the talents of volunteers, like veterinarians, handymen, photographers, and trainers, and have wish lists on our website and Facebook page. It all helps.”

Changing their narrative has also made for a more fulfilled staff. Rob explains, "Now we’re the place that saves animals rather than kills them, adding new meaning and pride to our work. Caring for these animals isn’t easy, and some stay longer than we’d like, but we offer hope now. ‘Kelly’ was here almost a year. She wasn’t the prettiest or friendliest, but she was a good dog. A family from North Louisiana found her on Petfinder.com, and they drove all the way here — and just like that, she had a loving home. Another case was a big chunk named Browning – like the gun. He was very loyal, which could be misinterpreted as intimidating, so he was always passed over. Finally, a lady came in wanting only him, undeterred by his appearance and healthy bark. She worked with him, changed his name to Brownie, and now he’s part of the family. Those are the successes that make it all worthwhile."

Making Holidays Special for Homeless Animals

WHETHER YOUR FAMILY is small, large, or made up of four-legged critters, the holidays are a time to celebrate the meaningful relationships you have with loved ones. These relationships are so significant that you may cross over parishes, states, and even oceans to spend this special time with those who matter most to you. As you exchange fond memories and gifts, consider sharing your love this holiday season.

Sadly, there are many dogs and cats who are currently homeless at our rescue who need your help. Though they receive love and care from our staff members and volunteers, nothing can compare to the joy that comes from being with a family like yours. At the end of the day after our dedicated animal care staff have cleaned, fed, and watered all our animals, they will turn off the lights and leave for the comfort and warmth of their homes. Once they are gone, the animals will be alone.

For less than $21, you can provide an animal with a toy and warm blanket for the holidays. So far this year, we have rescued over 1,100 homeless animals. With your contribution, together we can save even more lives! Help a homeless animal this holiday season and donate today.

Donations can be made by visiting our website at northshorehumane.org or mailing a check to Northshore Humane Society, 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433.

For more information, contact the Northshore Humane Society at 985-892-7387 or visit northshorehumane.org.

THE DressViral THAT WENT

hen Mandy Mae Poche’ made a TikTok post on October 14 at 8:57 p.m., she had no idea that within days, her solution for something to wear to her quaint town’s art stroll would go viral — in a BIG way!

HER TIKTOK POST, along with a photo of her hand-painted dress, said, “I guess this works! Tomorrow night is going to be super fun. I can’t wait to see everyone for the art and wine stroll and the release of 'Affirmations'." The video that Poche' posted the night before the Ponchatoula Art & Wine Stroll became a sensation almost overnight. Just a few days later while at her son’s football game, she said her phone starting constantly going off with notifications. “I literally thought my phone was malfunctioning!” Since her original post, the video has now reached over 20 million people with over 4,300 page shares!

Featured as a recent Sophisticated Woman Enterprising Woman, this Northshore artist is now trying to keep up with requests for her work worldwide — from Australia to the United Kingdom to South Africa and the Philippines. She’s even had to meet with a shipping company to satisfy the high demands to send her artwork to places around the globe.

Mandy Mae creates and displays her eye-catching creations at her studio, Mandy Mae Fine Art, located on West Pine Street in Downtown Ponchatoula. Poche' is a South Louisiana native originally from Luling and has called Ponchatoula home for the last several years. Of her unique and colorful painting style, Poche’ says, “Most of my work is more of an impressionist abstract style with some impasto techniques. My most popular subjects include churches, Louisianathemed items, and even more modern abstract pieces.”

She credits her strong faith with allowing her immense talent to shine through. “I prayed to God over four years ago to please show me my calling, please show me my talents so I can use them the way he made me, let me use what I can do to give back. A little voice and sense of certainty came over me and said, "Hold on! I still hear that voice, I still feel that energy to push forward, to keep going. I listen to it all the time. In my heart, I knew things were going to change. Here I am four years later, and I just can’t even begin to comprehend this crazy but amazing journey."

Seven Reasons to Begin Stretching Today

IT’S BEEN SAID that sitting is the new smoking, and stretching can be a great way to combat the negative health effects of a sedentary lifestyle. Whether you’re a self-designated couch potato, or an elite athlete, a stretching routine would be beneficial. A physical therapist can tailor a routine to your specific needs. The benefits of stretching regularly include:

1. Stress Relief – many of us carry our stress in our muscles, which naturally tightens up muscles. Gentle stretching can slowly relieve tension throughout your entire body.

2. Improve Posture – Not only does poor posture look unattractive, it is bad for our health. By stretching our mid back and necks, we can more easily sit upright and hold better posture.

3. Injury Prevention – Warming up prior to activities with stretching can help to improve blood flow and reduce our risk for injuries.

4. Improve Athletic Performance - Stretching before participating in athletics can help prepare your muscles and ligaments for strenuous physical activity. Stretching causes our muscles to continually lengthen and then relax again, keeping them healthy and in peak shape.

5. Improve Range of Motion –we have in our joints (hips, knees, shoulders) the more activities we will be able to do. Stretching often times takes your joints to the end of its motions and assists in gently improving this mobility.

6. Improved Flexibility –ROM, improving flexibility will improve our ability to perform more activities without adding increased stress to our bodies.

7. Improved Blood Flow –flow, the better our body can deliver vital nutrients throughout our body to improve our overall health and wellbeing.

A comprehensive physical therapy evaluation can help you set up a stretching program to get you on your way to better health.
