The Best of the Best Eighteen years ago, the Northshore was a very different place than it is today. The area had yet to be impacted by the population boom in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Highway 190 was a two-lane road through the heart of Mandeville, Madisonville was still considered “the country” and anyone who would’ve suggested an exit on Fremaux Avenue would have been laughed out of town. In order to meet the population explosion over the last two decades, subdivisions have been built, schools have opened and virtually every type of business has been introduced into the area. There is perhaps no better gauge of the growth in the business community than our Northshore’s Best awards. As part of Sophisticated Woman Magazine’s 20th anniversary in 2005, then-editor Francie Unger and publisher Joanne Gallinghouse created The Northshore’s Best to recognize and honor local businesses. As the only Northshore readers’ choice program, what started with 93 categories has since expanded into 398 categories encompassing West St. Tammany, East St. Tammany and Tangipahoa. Throughout the years, our goal has been to give our readers a voice to identify those businesses that excel in delivering products and services to our community. There have been many long-time businesses that continue to impress our readers with their commitment to excellence. In fact, St. Tammany Hospital, Acquistapace’s, Coffee Rani and Gallagher`s have been perennial winners in their respective specialties. Other categories have fierce rivalries with two or three businesses taking turns. Some companies even employ competitive “Vote for Us” campaigns to win the coveted Northshore’s Best title. Almost everywhere you go throughout the area - from doctors’ offices to car washes – if a business has received The Northshore’s Best recognition in the past, you are going to know about it. They proudly display the logo that is their badge of recognition on stickers, banners, certificates, signage and in advertising materials. With an open voting process, anyone can vote for any local business in just a few categories or all of them. The process is 100 percent objective. Advertising in Sophisticated Woman is not a pre-requisite to winning. This year, thousands of votes were cast – a testament to our loyal readers and their passion for the Northshore people and businesses they love. RACHAEL P. CATALANOTTO is a Northshore native, and after attending LSU undergrad and graduating from Loyola College of Law in 2007, she naturally gravitated towards practicing law in St. Tammany Parish. Her practice areas include family law and personal injury. She is Board Certified in Family Law by the Louisiana Board of Legal Specialization. She is also the current Magistrate in Mandeville’s Mayor’s Court and is very active within the community. She is the Past President of the 22nd JDC Bar Association as well as a founding member of the Safe Haven Foundation. Her community involvement reflects her commitment to the Parish in which she was born and raised. Northlake Academy Of Music LESLIE DOMINGUES started Tots-N-Tunes Music Appreciation Program for Preschoolers in 1998. She remembers her simple start with only $40 to purchase a ream of paper, a PO Box, and a dream — walking house to house handing out promotional flyers. A humble start with TotsN-Tunes has grown into a thriving business over the last 24 years! Her ambition to teach children about music through live music demonstrations would soon grow into something far more than she had initially hoped for. Northlake Academy of Music now houses Tunes Together & Tots-N-Tunes along with additional music based programs for children as well as music lessons for children and adults. They offer lessons in piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, drums, vocals, and they also have a full children’s choir. The studio also offers adult group classes in violin, guitar and choir! Lakeview Academy of Music at 425 Harrison Avenue in New Orleans recently opened in August 2021! Tunes Together, Tots-N-Tunes and private lessons for children and adults has been an amazing addition to the Lakeview area community. Paul Domingues, Leslie's husband, is now playing an active role in the new academy as well. Leslie’s passion for music and children has led Northlake to be voted "Best Music Academy" in the area by Sophisticated Woman readers for five consecutive years, 2011-2015, and again in 2017 and 2019.
