The expanded facility has new waiting areas for adults and children, two trauma bays, a resuscitation room, behavioral health rooms, a family consult room, a new staff lounge and negative airflow rooms, used to stop the potential spread of infectious diseases.

The Emergency Rooms at Inova Loudoun Hospital treat more than 68,000 patients each year — including nearly 20,000 children who visit Loudoun County’s only Children’s Emergency Room. Gifts to the Loudoun Rising Campaign helped to expand capacity and transform capabilities for the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center, delivering on a promise to make bigger, better and faster ER care a reality for our community.

Sharon Virts and Scott Miller have committed a total of $4 million to transform emergency care in Loudoun County.

During the campaign, $2 million of this gift helped to build a Surgical Trauma ICU and develop a trauma education program at the hospital.

Mike and Teresa Wheeler and Dr. Edward Puccio and his colleagues at Commonwealth Emergency Physicians each donated $250,000 toward a successful community challenge fundraising initiative to expand the Lansdowne Campus ER — inspiring other generous community members through their example.

SCHAUFELD FAMILY HEART CENTER

Thanks to the support of an incredibly generous $5 million campaign gift from philanthropists Fred, Karen and Bobbi Schaufeld, Inova Loudoun Hospital has greatly expanded its cardiovascular health infrastructure, capabilities and community education programs. Their investment at Inova Loudoun Hospital in diagnostic and non-invasive technologies has allowed the team at the Schaufeld Family Heart Center to dramatically decrease the average “door-to-balloon” time to below 65 minutes, well under the national benchmark of 90 minutes.

LOUDOUN’S ONLY TRAUMA CENTER

In 2017, Inova Loudoun Hospital was designated a Level III trauma center, making the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center the first and only trauma center in Loudoun County. As a Level III trauma center, Inova Loudoun Hospital is able to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, stabilization and emergency operations to patients with serious, life-threatening injuries.

The Schaufelds’ donation is the largest cash gift in Inova Loudoun Hospital’s 105-year history and the second largest contribution to cardiac care throughout Inova Health System.

ADVANCING NEUROSURGICAL CARE

When it comes to neurosurgical care, minutes can mean the difference between life and death. With the help of Bob and Laurie Denson’s generous investment, Inova Loudoun Hospital is adding the latest equipment and technology, expanding the neuro team and providing advanced training and education.

BRINGING EXPERT CARE TO THOSE IN PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL CRISIS

Meeting the mental health needs of our community is critical, and we are grateful to our generous donors for helping us increase access to behavioral health services in our community.

The Inova Kellar Center was founded in 1991 in partnership with visionaries Art and Betty Kellar, who had a strong commitment to serve children and families in the multicultural Northern Virginia region. Thanks to the generous and ongoing support from the Kellar Family, the Inova Kellar Center has expanded its nationally recognized model of care to Loudoun County. The new satellite location in Sterling brings a full continuum of compassionate, professional behavioral health resources to the Loudoun community, with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians including child and adolescent psychiatrists, licensed mental health professionals and clinical support staff.

With support from the Hitt family, Inova Loudoun Hospital will expand its addiction treatment programs to better meet the needs of our community.

EXPERT CARE FOR VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE OR ASSAULT

The Inova Charles B. and Betty G. Ewing Forensic Assessment and Consultation Team (FACT) program opened its doors in Loudoun County in May 2018. The only program of its kind in Northern Virginia, FACT provides specialized forensic medical evaluation services for children and adults who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or abuse. Thanks to generous support from the Ewing family, the FACT program expanded to the Cornwall campus, helping to ensure that victims in Loudoun County do not need to travel for compassionate, specialized care when they need it most.

• Every 73 seconds, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.

• In the U.S., nearly 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have been victims of severe violence.

• DC ranks 1st and Virginia 6th in the country for human trafficking cases.

• Last year in Virginia, there were more than 5,000 reported forcible sex offenses and more than 10,000 aggravated assaults.

The Ladies Board has been an integral part of healthcare in Loudoun County since its inception in 1912.

The Ladies Board of Inova Loudoun Hospital generously committed $1.2 million in support of the Loudoun Rising Campaign — their largest gift to date. This gift boosted the campaign over its $20 million goal and generated invaluable momentum for additional philanthropic investments as the campaign neared its completion. Through their long and loyal history of giving they have demonstrated the power of philanthropy to change lives for the better. Your Support for Inova Loudoun Hospital Keeps Our Kids Healthy and Happy

SENSORY FRIENDLY ER EXPERIENCE

Visiting an ER is often challenging for children, but for those with a Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) — such as autism — the experience can be particularly difficult. Philanthropic support played a key role in creating a Sensory-Friendly Pediatric ER, with new state-of-the-art medical equipment sized to fit children. The array of kid-friendly features and sensory-friendly approach, geared for the estimated 1 in 60 children coping with sensory issues or autism, is the only ER of its kind in Loudoun County. We are grateful for the generous support of the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and Cindy and Rick Chambers, and many others who support pediatric care at Inova Loudoun.

In order to help ease a child’s stress and anxiety while being treated, Inova Loudoun Hospital staffs a team of Child Life Specialists. This program, fueled by donors like you, offers services such as preparing children for a hospital stay or surgery, medical and therapeutic play and hands-on education about the hospital environment. Bereavement counseling from skilled, caring therapists is also available to help children and adolescents explore their unique grief journey, better understand the grief process, ease pain, and find meaning.

In 2017, Inova Loudoun Hospital welcomed a new, full-time furry staff member: Jeremiah is a golden retriever and the hospital’s first full-time facility dog.

Jeremiah promotes positive coping during medical interventions, provides a source of comfort and physical contact for patients and offers an alternative focus from illness and medical treatment.

LOUDOUN COUNTY’S ONLY LEVEL III NICU Loudoun County has a young and fast-growing population, and having world-class neonatal care available 24/7 is critical.

As part of the Inova Loudoun Hospital Master Plan, during the course of the Loudoun Rising Campaign, the NICU has nearly tripled in size and added a host of family-friendly features and amenities.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND TUITION REIMBURSEMENT FOR NURSING DEGREES Each year, The Ladies Board awards more than $100,000 in nursing education scholarships for nurses at every stage of their careers, whether they are just starting out or are working to achieve graduate level degrees.

Estela “Tellie” Geigel, who passed away in 2019, is remembered at Inova Loudoun Hospital as a Eucharistic minister volunteer who talked with anyone she encountered within the hospital. Tellie was also a grateful patient who was especially fond of her nurses. Through a bequest from her estate, Tellie created the Tellie Geigel Nursing Scholarship to provide educational support to deserving Inova Loudoun Hospital nurses.

In 2019, the Patient Assistance Fund provided support such as emergency bill payments to prevent loss of home or transportation; an iPad with assistive communications program; and wheelchair transportation to and from radiation treatment.

Through the Loudoun Rising Brick Campaign, Inova team members, leaders, volunteers, and other community supporters raised $62,000 to help patients meet critical financial needs during their most challenging times.

Donors like you support programs that have the power to improve physical and psychological health and treat the whole person — body, mind and spirit. Through an innovative partnership with local nonprofit A Place to Be, Inova offers medical music therapy in a variety of clinical settings, including intensive care, oncology, progressive care, medical/ surgical and pediatric in-patient and emergency units at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Music and music-based interventions are employed to help improve physical symptoms as well as psycho-social issues that may arise as a result of being hospitalized. Board-certified medical music therapists offer clinical interventions that are based on the latest research and evidence-based practices.
