Doch das ist nur die halbe Wahrheit, denn Zürich hat noch viel mehr Eis zu bieten. Über den Dächern der Stadt, einen Steinwurf vom Hotel Dolder Grand entfernt, steht die Dolder Kunsteisbahn. Sie wurde in den 1930er Jahren gebaut und trägt mit ihrer Fläche von 6'000 Quadratmetern den stolzen Titel der grössten offenen Kunsteisfläche Europas. Die Attraktion zieht auch im Luxushotel.

«Neben der lokalen Bevölkerung sind auch immer mehr unserer Hausgäste auf der Kunsteisbahn anzutreffen», beobachtet Stephanie Seibert, Pressesprecherin vom Dolder Grand.

When you travel to Zurich and hear the word “ice”, one of the many trendy bars in the city on the Limmat river inevitably springs to mind. A whisky on the rocks, a caipirinha with crushed ice or the next ice cream stand selling tasty frozen treats. But this is only half the story, because Zurich has so much more ice to offer. Above the roofs of the town, a stone’s throw from The Dolder Grand Hotel, is the Dolder ice skating rink. It was built in the 1930s and boasts the title of the largest open air ice skating rink in Europe with its surface of 6,000 square metres. The attraction also entices those from the luxury hotel. “Alongside the local population, more and more of our hotel guests can be found on the ice skating rink,” observes Dolder Grand press officer Stephanie Seibert.

Schlittschuhlaufen gehört genauso zur winterlichen Schweiz wie das Skifahren. Das belegen nicht nur anhaltend hohe Besucherzahlen in den vielen Eishallen oder die beachtlichen WM-Erfolge der Eishockeynationalmannschaft. Auf Kufen werden auch oft und gern Runden gedreht, wo im Sommer Fische schwimmen, Blumen wachsen oder gar Politik gemacht wird.

Ice skating is just as much a part of wintertime in Switzerland as skiing. This is evident not only from continuously high numbers of visitors to the many indoor ice rinks and the remarkable World Cup successes of the national ice hockey team. People frequently and gladly don their ice skates for a few laps where in summer fish swim, flowers grow and policies are made.

Seen, Plätze und Landschaften auf Kufen entdecken Das hängt direkt mit der Schweizer Natur zusammen. Das Wasserschloss Europas mit seinen vielen Seen wird in der kalten Jahreszeit automatisch zum Land der natürlichen Eisbahnen.

Paradoxerweise heisst «weniger Schnee» in diesem Fall «mehr Eis». Fällt nämlich Schnee auf eine dünne Eisschicht, so wirkt die weisse Decke isolierend und verlangsamt das Wachstum der Eisdicke drastisch. In schneearmen Wintern lässt es sich also besser eislaufen. Gemäss der Vermarktungsorganisation wird die hohe Dichte der Schweizer Kunsteisfelder dann um landesweit mindestens 30 zugefrorene Seen ergänzt.

Discover lakes, town squares and landscapes on ice skates This has an intimate connection to nature in Switzerland. Europe's moated castle with its many lakes automatically turns into a land of natural ice rinks in winter. Yet paradoxically, less snow means more ice. When snow falls on a thin layer of ice, the white covering has an insulating effect and significantly slows the formation of thick ice. In this way, conditions for ice skating are better in winters with little snow. According to the marketing organisation, the high density of Swiss artificial ice fields will be supplemented by at least 30 frozen lakes nationwide.

Zu den attraktivsten Zielen für Schlittschuhausflüge auf Natureis gehört das Oberengadin mit dem Silvaplanersee, dem St. Moritzer See und dem Silsersee. Auf dem Silvaplanersee ist neben Eislaufen auch Snowkiten eine riesige Attraktion. Sehr beliebt für den Spass auf Kufen sind auch der Seealpsee im Alpstein, der Obersee in Arosa, der Oeschinen- sowie der Lauenensee im Berner Oberland, der Lac de Joux im Waadtländer Jura oder der Lac de Champex bei Orsières im Unterwallis. Erfahrungsgemäss sind kleine und mittlere Schweizer Seen ab 1'100 Meter über Meer im Winter regelmässig gefroren. Bedeutend ist auch die Lage des Gewässers. In Muldenlagen stehen die Chancen bedeutend besser als etwa in der offenen Landschaft. Eine exklusive Attraktion bietet der Lac Lioson in Les Mosses im Kanton Waadt: Eistauchen. Drei Zugangslöcher werden den ganzen Winter offen gehalten.

Wer es wagen will, braucht allerdings ein Tauchbrevet.

Den Eisplausch mit hochstehender Kulinarik verbinden können auch Gäste des Swiss Deluxe Hotels Suvretta House in St. Moritz. Die winterliche Schlittschuhbahn befindet sich gleich vor der ehrwürdigen Kulisse des Hotels. Auf der hoteleigenen Eisbahn haben schon ehemalige Weltmeister im Eiskunstlauf ihr Können gezeigt.

In winter, the Bundesplatz (Federal Square) in Bern transforms into a smooth ice field. As does the Piazza Grande in Locarno during the run-up to Christmas.

A top insider tip is the Alp Raguta natural ice rink situated at 1,950 metres above sea level in Tomils, Graubünden. Here you can take in a magnificent mountain panorama and enjoy local delicacies while ice-skating, curling or playing ice stock sport. Guests of the Swiss Deluxe Hotel Suvretta House St. Moritz can also combine fun on the ice with first-rate cuisine. The winter skating rink is located right in front of the awe-inspiring backdrop of the hotel. Even former world champions have shown their ice-skating skills on the hotel’s own skating rink.

Auch dort warten faszinierende Eiserlebnisse. Die Schweiz ist nicht nur das Land der Seen, sondern auch der Gletscher, selbst wenn diese bedauerlicherweise seit Jahren abschmelzen. 1973 gab es in der Schweiz 2'150 Gletscher, heute sind es noch 1'400.

Ihre grösste Ausdehnung erreichten sie während der kleinen Eiszeit um das Jahr 1850. Die Gesamtfläche der nationalen Gletscher betrug damals 1'735 Quadratkilometer, was exakt dem Territorium des Kantons Zürich entspricht. Davon übrig geblieben sind bis heute 890 Quadratkilometer, also noch etwas mehr als die Hälfte.

Searching for eternal ice Those who have outgrown their ice skates after so many adventures can set out into the high-alpine regions of Switzerland with more solid footwear. Here, too, fascinating ice experiences await. Switzerland is not only the land of lakes, but also of glaciers, even though these have regrettably been melting for years.

In 1973 there were 2,150 glaciers, today there are around 1,400. They reached their peak during the Little Ice Age around 1850. The total surface area of the country’s glaciers amounted to 1,735 square kilometres back then, which equates precisely to the territory of the Canton of Zurich. Today, approximately 890 square kilometres of this remains, which is just over half.

Vielerorts wehrt man sich gegen die Gletscherschmelze. Um etwa die Sonneneinstrahlung abzudämpfen und das Eis zu schützen, werden heute zum Beispiel der Titlis- und Rhonegletscher teils mit Vlies-Tüchern abgedeckt. Im Engadin denkt man sogar darüber nach, die Gletscher künstlich zu beschneien. Solche Massnahmen können lokal effizient und sinnvoll sein, den Rückgang werden sie auf lange Sicht gleichwohl nicht aufhalten, wie sich Glaziologen einig sind.

In many places, people are fighting back against glacial melting. Today, for example, the Titlis and Rhône glaciers are partially covered with fleece blankets to lessen the impact of solar radiation and protect the ice. In Engadine, covering the glaciers with artificial snow is also being considered. Such measures may be effective and sensible on a local level, nevertheless glaciologists agree that in the long term they will not prevent glacial retreat.

Wer das ewige Eis zielstrebig sucht, wird in der Schweiz trotzdem fündig. Vor allem im Wallis, wo es die grössten Gletscher gibt. Der grosse Aletschgletscher ist mit einer Länge von 23 Kilometern der unbestritten längste Eisstrom der Alpen und gehört gleichzeitig zum geschützten Unesco-Welterbe. If you are looking for eternal ice, you can still find it in Switzerland. Particularly in Valais, home to the largest glaciers. The large Aletsch Glacier is the undisputed longest ice flow in the Alps with a length of 23 kilometres and is also among the protected UNESCO world heritage sites. No fewer than 27 billion tons of ice make the Great Aletsch Glacier a fascinating natural spectacle. The Aletsch Forest, located nearby, is home to countless and in some cases rare plant and animal species to this day. The local tourism organisation Aletsch Arena organises regular glacier tours with local and experienced mountain guides. Excursion tip: The Eggishorn, accessible by cable car from Fiesch, offers an impressive panoramic view of the meandering upper part of the Aletsch Glacier.

Auch der Gletscherweg Morteratsch im Engadin übt auf Besucher eine magische Anziehungskraft aus. The Morteratsch Glacier Trail in Engadine also exerts a magical attraction over visitors. It is passable year-round, both on foot, with the pushchair and also by bike. In winter it is passable via an impressive cross-country ski trail using cross-country skis or after an awe-inspiring glacier ride from Diavolezza on alpine skis even with the pushchair. The journey with the Rhaetian Railway is almost as impressive for the countless international visitors as the walkway over the solid ice.

«Art of Ice» auf fast 4'000 Meter über Meer Coole Erlebnisse der künstlerischen Art bieten wunderbare Eisskulpturen, die in der Schweiz in der kalten Jahreszeit vielerorts zu bestaunen sind. So etwa in Zermatt, wo sich mit dem Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, dem Mont Cervin Palace und dem Riffelalp Resort gleich drei Exponenten der Swiss Deluxe Hotels um eine anspruchsvolle Gästeschaft kümmern. Per Luftseilbahn gelangt man auf 3'882 Meter über Meer, wo sich das Matterhorn Glacier Paradise befindet. Dort oben verbirgt das breite Gletscherfeld zwischen dem Klein Matterhorn und Breithorn eine ganz besondere Attraktion unter sich. Via Personenlift fahren Besucher 15 Meter in die Tiefe und erreichen den höchstgelegenen Gletscherpalast der Welt.

Neben faszinierenden Eisskulpturen, die von diversen Künstlern immer wieder neu modelliert und geschliffen werden, können sich hier oben Kinder auf einer Rutschbahn nur aus Eis vergnügen. Auch tiefe Einblicke in eine imposante Gletscherspalte gibt es zu bestaunen. Der Gletscherpalast ist ein Gästemagnet. «Pro Jahr empfangen wir hier oben rund 60'000 bis 65'000 Besucher aus aller Welt, die beim Betrachten der Skulpturen Eisklötze staunen», sagt Mathias Imoberdorf von den Zermatt Bergbahnen.

Eisklettern: Grosser Sport am glatten Fels Als geschwungene Skulptur regt das Schweizer Eis die Fantasie und den Geist seines Betrachters an, viel eher den Blutdruck und die Muskelspannung seines Besteigers, wenn es sich als dicke und raue Schicht über eine fast senkrechte Felswand spannt. Eisklettern hat sich neben Skifahren, Winterwandern und Langlauf in den letzten Jahren zum veritablen Trendsport in den Alpen gemausert und wird landesweit von immer mehr Menschen aktiv betrieben.

Ice climbing: Big sport on smooth rock As a curved sculpture, Swiss ice stimulates the imagination and mind of the beholder, and much more so the blood pressure and muscle tension of a climber, when it stretches across a nearly vertical rock face as a thick and rugged layer. Alongside skiing, winter hiking and cross-country skiing, ice climbing has turned into a genuinely fashionable sport in the Alps over recent years and is being actively pursued by more and more people nationwide.

Pontresina is one of the safest ice-climbing areas in the entire Alpine region. Various ice falls in the region can be climbed from December through to the end of March. From beginner to pro, here there is something to suit every ability. For instance, in the

Als eines der sichersten Eisklettergebiete im gesamten Alpenraum gilt Pontresina. Von Dezember bis Ende März kann an diversen Eisfällen der Region geklettert werden. Vom Einsteiger bis zum Crack gibt es dabei für jede Leistungsstufe etwas Geeignetes. Inmitten von Pontresina liegt beispielsweise die Dorfschlucht, ein ideal vereistes Übungs- und Trainingsgelände für Anfänger. «Aber auch Könner kommen auf unseren bis 40 Meter hohen Eisrouten mitten im Dorf auf ihre Kosten», sagt Gian Luck, Geschäftsführer der lokalen Bergsteigerschule. In Pontresina kann selbst am Abend bis 22 Uhr bei Flutlicht geklettert werden.

Durch den kurzen und einfachen Zustieg in die nahe gelegene Pontresina-Schlucht hat sich der Ferienort in den letzten Jahren zum Hotspot für Eiskletterer entwickelt.

Eine innige Beziehung zum Eis pflegt auch das Swiss Deluxe Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina. Vor seinem Pavillon präpariert es jeden Winter in Feinarbeit eine schöne Eisfläche zum Schlittschuhlaufen für Gäste wie Einheimische. Zudem pflegt der Kronenhof eine Kooperation mit der Pontresiner Bergsteigerschule, um seinen Gästen das Eisklettern aus erster Hand anbieten zu können. Die Nachfrage dafür steigt.

Im Eis übernachten Nach so viel cooler Action auf Kufen und Gletscherpfaden, in künstlerisch verzierten Eisgrotten sowie entlang glasierter Kletterwände ist auch mal Ruhe und Entspannung angesagt. Selbst diese kann in der Schweizer Bergwelt in eisiger Umgebung genossen werden. Vor über 20 Jahren gründeten findige Unternehmer die Organisation Iglu-Dorf und bauten oberhalb des Aussichtsplateaus «Motta Naluns» im Engadiner Ort Scuol die erste kleine Bungalow-Anlage nur aus Eis mit Übernachtungsmöglichkeiten.

Im Lauf der Jahre expandierte das Unternehmen mit seiner Idee in weitere Destinationen. Iglu-Dörfer mit Doppel- wie Familienzimmern und sogar Suiten gibt es mittlerweile in Davos-Klosters, Engelberg, Zermatt, Gstaad, auf dem Stockhorn oberhalb Thuns und ganz neu auch auf dem Schilthorn.

Thanks to floodlights, you can even climb until 10pm in Pontresina. The holiday resort has developed into a hotspot for ice climbers in recent years due to the short and simple approach to the nearby Pontresina gorge.

The Swiss Deluxe Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina has an intimate relationship with ice. Every winter the hotel prepares a beautiful ice skating rink to be enjoyed by both guests and locals. In addition, the Kronenhof cooperates closely with the Pontresina mountaineering school to offer ice climbing to its guests at first hand.

Demand for it is rising.

Spend a night in the ice After action-packed adventures on ice skates and glacier trails, in artificially decorated ice grottos and along frozen climbing walls, peace and relaxation is the order of the day. This can be enjoyed even in the icy surroundings of the Swiss mountain landscape.

Resourceful entrepreneurs founded the organisation Iglu-Dorf (igloo village) over 20 years ago and built the first small bungalow made solely of ice and offering overnight accommodation above the “Motta Naluns” viewing platform in Scuol, Engadine. Over the years the business expanded on its idea in other locations.

Igloo villages offering double as well as family rooms and even suites have since sprung up in Davos-Klosters, Engelberg, Zermatt, Gstaad, on the Stockhorn above Thun and very recently on the Schilthorn.

Am Nachmittag trifft man sich gerne zu einer Partie «Bridge» im eigens dafür eingerichteten Raum, oder man lässt sich in der Lobby den «Full English Suvretta House Afternoon Tea» servieren. Esther und Peter Egli, die das Suvretta House in St. Moritz seit 2014 führen, haben der alten englischen Tradition und Kultur im Suvretta House wieder neuen Schwung mit viel Liebe zum Detail verliehen. Mit vielen Jahren Erfahrung als Hoteliers in Grossbritannien ist die Führung des Suvretta House für sie wie ein Heimspiel. Schon die Gründungszeit des Suvretta House basierte auf viel britischem Flair. So war es der Engländer Charles Sydney Goldman, ein Mitglied des britischen Parlaments, der die Villa Suvretta sowie 4,5 Hektaren Land in unberührter, idyllischer Natur auf Chasellas, rund zwei Kilometer ausserhalb von St. Moritz, besass. Schnell wurde man mit dem Schweizer Hotelpionier Anton Bon handelseinig und das Suvretta House wurde in Rekordzeit von nur knapp zwei Jahren erbaut und am 21.

Dezember 1912 eröffnet. Das renommierte Luxushotel an einzigartiger und ruhiger Lage am legendären Suvretta-Hang von St. Moritz ist bis zum heutigen Tag im Besitz der Familie Candrian-Bon. Mit seinen 181 Zimmern, Junior Suiten und Suiten ist das Suvretta House eine Oase der Erholung und Entspannung und eine Ikone der Schweizer Luxushotellerie.

With many years of experience as hoteliers in the UK, managing Suvretta House is like a home fixture for them. Even the founding of the Suvretta House was based on a great deal of British flair. It was Englishman Charles Sydney Goldman, a member of the British Parliament, who owned the Villa Suvretta and 4.5 hectares of land in unspoiled, idyllic countryside on Chasellas, about two kilometres outside of St. Moritz.

An agreement was quickly reached with Swiss hotel pioneer Anton Bon and the Suvretta House was built in the record time of barely two years before its opening on 21 December 1912.

The iconic luxury hotel in a unique and peaceful setting on the famous Suvretta hillside of St. Moritz is owned to this day by the Candrian-Bon family. With its 181 rooms, junior suites and suites, the Suvretta House is an oasis of recovery and relaxation; an icon of the Swiss luxury hotel industry.

Das Suvretta House hat sich das letzte Exemplar gesichert, das nach 68 Jahren Produktion und mehr als 2 Millionen Exemplaren am 29. Januar 2016 die Werkshallen im britischen Solihull verlassen hat.

Under the patronage of Her Majesty, the Queen of England Even in winter, the enthusiasm for sport and British influence is ubiquitous, and the Suvretta House is also characterised by innovation and sportsmanship. In 1935, for instance, the first ski lift in Switzerland was built behind the Suvretta House, which still provides direct access to the Corviglia ski resort.

Even for non-skiers, the Suvretta House offers the best in entertainment. The hotel's own ice rink right in front of the house is perfect for an enjoyable time spent ice skating and pirouetting. Hier zelebriert Küchenchef Fabrizio Zanetti seine Philosophie einer marktfrischen französischen Küche mit internationaler Note, die mit 15 GaultMillau-Punkten bewertet wird. Here, head chef Fabrizio Zanetti celebrates his philosophy of fresh-from-the-market French cuisine with an international touch, which has been awarded 15 Gault Millau points. Interior design perfectly harmonised with the mountain landscape The interior design has been personally orchestrated by the owner. She has harmonised the style, furniture and interplay of shapes and colours with the mountain landscape of Valais. “We wanted to support the rooms in their roles and functions and at the same time allow a lot of freedom and openness,” says Nati Felli. Guests should feel comfortable at all times, as if it were their holiday home. That’s why Nati Felli also personally takes care of the smallest details as regards furnishing and service. The additional rooms in the new building also bear the hallmarks of the hotel and reflect the owners’ philosophy. In the library, for example, soft shapes add a lot of calmness to the room, while the extensive window facades stage the wildness and playfulness of nature as well as the mountain landscape. The private dining room in the new chalet provides space for around 30 people and is ideal for comfortable raclette evenings in small groups. Here too, warm wooden elements are combined with modern and linear architecture, which safeguards the ambiance from too much alpine kitsch.

By Ed Rampell k The homage from Badrutt’s Palace to Sir Alfred Hitchcock – who was a guest at the hotel for half a century and one of the greatest artistic geniuses of cinema – and the concurrrent celebration of his anniversary in 2019 can simply bee summarised as follows: A classic commemorates a classic. aFilm stars appearing in front of the camera are often immediately recognisable to everyone. Very few cinema-goers, however, r, know the faces of the directors. Through the years, one of the he most well-known film-makers was undoubtedly Alfred Hitchhcock, the director of exciting and creepy classics. Viewers easily recognise “Hitch” by the unmistakable personality of the bald-headed, corpulent Brit with the flabby cheeks and oversized lower lip, who since 1927 has always appeared briefly in the opening sequences of his films and from 1955 to 1961 presented the television series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and from 1962 to 1965 “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour”.

Thanks to the endeavours of hotelier Johannes Badrutt, since the 19th century upper-class English tourists have been traditionally spending the winter in the elitist enclave of St. Moritz, in the south-east of Switzerland's exquisite Engadine high valley. Being half-Irish and the Catholic son of a greengrocer, Hitchcock did not belong to this privileged British group when, in the winter of 1924/1925, he happened to arrive in the elegant village in Switzerland. Hitch was working as an artistic director, screenwriter and assistant director for the film “The Prude’s Fall” directed by Graham Cutts. He first discovered St. Moritz and Badrutt’s Palace during his work as a location scout. As John Russell Taylor wrote in his 1978 biography, “Hitch: The Life and Times of Alfred Hitchcock”: “Hitch and one of Balcon’s [the British producer Michael Balcon] assistants set out with Cutts on a journey to find shooting locations, as different glamorous places in Western Europe were required for the shooting of the film... In Paris, Cutts and his girlfriend joined them after a few days. She liked it in Paris, so Cutts decided to stay there with her while Hitch and his partner travelled on to St. Moritz. A week later, Cutts and his girlfriend arrived in St. Moritz. She liked it there, too, so Hitch was sent to Venice to select more locations and meet the actors and the rest of the crew. Everything was going very well until Cutts arrived with his girlfriend. She didn’t like it in Venice (...) so the whole group (...) set out for Lake Como. On the day they arrived, a storm broke out above the lake and she didn’t like it here either (...), so they all travelled onwards to St. Moritz. Or at least in the direction of St. Moritz: an hour’s train ride away from St. Moritz they discovered that the route

Cutts: Let’s go back to England. And that’s what they did, after dragging the entire cast and crew through Europe at great expenditure and not having shot a single metre of film.”

This futile undertaking, however, marked the beginning of Alfred Hitchcock’s lifelong love affair with the exclusive oasis in Switzerland. As Gary Chapman, author of the 2014 book “London‘s Hollywood”: The Gainsborough Studio in the Silent Years”, writes: “Although it is evident that no usable metre was filmed, it seems very likely that this was Hitchcock's first visit to St. Moritz and Lake Como, and he returned there many times for work and recreation with Alma.”

Alfred and Alma “married on 2 December 1926 and from 4 December to 10 December”, the young married couple spent their honeymoon at Badrutt's Palace in St. Moritz, according to Evelyne Lüthi-Graf, historian and archivist and responsible for the archives of the Palace Hotel. This was the first of supposedly eleven holidays that the Hitchcocks spent at the posh five-star hotel to celebrate their wedding day, Christmas and New Year. Most of their stays in St. Moritz occurred after the couple moved from England to Hollywood. The online news website https://amuse-i-d.vice.com/ claims: “He paid no fewer than 34 visits there.”

In the summer of 2018 Lüthi-Graf spent a week at the Palace and trawled through Badrutt's extensive archives; however, her research did not reveal any of Hitchcock’s captivating escapades.

There were “no scandals or similar,” tells the archivist. Although Peter Lorre and other actors told how “Hitchy” loved playing pranks on people, other stars, including Tippi Hedren in particular, posthumously accused Hitchcock of being offensive. Badrutt’s guestbook describes the Brit as being “very nice,” tells Lüthi-Graf.

As far as the holiday in 1937 is concerned, Lüthi-Graf said: “During this stay they had to move rooms and then they switched floors, from the second and third floors. The first floor of a hotel is always the best, the Bel Etage. Most of the time they were on the first or second floor, never higher,” Lüthi-Graf tells Ambiance about the Hitchcocks’ last stay at Badrutt’s Palace, before World War II made Switzerland too dangerous due to Nazi-occupied and war-torn Europe.

The researcher added: “Between 1896 and 1936 the guest book was sorted alphabetically according to customer, we know the rooms, residential addresses and the preferences that are important in a hotel.” Other guest books have been lost over time.

In the post-war period, Alfred and Alma returned in December 1950 with another screenwriter, Whitfield Cook, an American, whose works include Hitchcock’s “Stage Fright” from 1950 and the sinister “Strangers on a Train” from 1951. As stated by “the. hitchcock.zone”, the Hitchcocks also spent the Decembers of 1952, 1954 and 1958 at Badrutt’s Palace. During this last trip the American screenwriter Samuel A. Taylor was present, whose work includes Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” from 1958. His most wellknown work, however, was surely the romantic comedy “Sabrina” (1954), in which Audrey Hepburn played the leading role and Billy Wilder directed (remade in 1995).

Lüthi-Graf describes, however, the Hitchcockish dilemma that was exacerbated by the haute cuisine and the Palace’s labyrinthlike wine cellar: “He was a gourmet and had a weight problem. He loved food and he loved drinking. The problem was that he always wanted to lose weight. Yet he never managed to lose weight, as he ate and drank constantly. Hitch was a humorous man and always had a joke to tell: ‘I am a thin man born by accident in the body of a fat man’,” recites Lüthi-Graf, based on the memories of Hansjürg Badrutt in the book “Pioniere”.

After their honeymoon, the Hitchcocks returned to Badrutt’s Palace from “19 to 28 December 1933”. “What is interesting,” observes Lüthi-Graf, is “that he paid his bill with American Express. It is remarkable - a way of paying without cash” in the early 1930s, where a - presumably - wealthy Hitch used AmEx traveller's cheques, the precursor to the credit cards that the company introduced in 1958. Lüthi-Graf explains further that in the hotel register, the in-house book in which the visits, needs and behaviour of guests were recorded, that “in 1933, it states that he is a film director.” And he stayed here with a child and a servant... and of course with Alma, who always accompanied him. Alfred and Alma’s only child Patricia was born on 7 July 1928.

During the 1960s, the Hitchcocks spent three holidays at Badrutt’s Palace. There is a quirky photograph that shows him on one of these trips bowling on the Chesa Veglia, the oldest farm in St. Moritz, which was built in 1658 near the Palace. It now houses three restaurants and two bars owned by the Badrutts. In 1961, Alfred and Alma helped celebrate Marlene Dietrich's sixtieth birthday on December 27 at Badrutt’s Palace. With the German superstar in the lead, Hitch directed the film “Stage Fright” (1950), a crime thriller which is played out in the world of theatre and is explained in part through flashbacks. Marlene plays a diva who in this thriller breathes “The Laziest Gal in Town” into the microphone. Jane Wyman, who had won the Academy Award for Best Actress Oscar in 1948 for the film “Johnny Belinda” and was married to Ronald Reagan, also appears alongside her in the film.

Dietrich was just one of the Palace’s rich and famous guests with whom the Hitchcocks - who were now a part of Hollywood nobility themselves - remained in close contact in the decades they spent in the distinguished niche in St. Moritz. Other prominent figures included the former Empress Soraya of Persia, Greta Garbo and members of the European royal families. According to Lüthi-Graf, “they (Alfred and Alma) took their meals with Anikò and Hansjürg Badrutt,” the long-standing majority shareholder of the Palace, with whom they had a deep friendship. (Hansjürg being the great-grandson of Johannes Badrutt, the pioneering hotelier who popularised winter tourism in St. Moritz in the 19th century.) A strange coincidence connected the Badrutts and the Hitchcocks - there was only one day between the birthdays of both couples’ spouses. Hitch entertained the Badrutts with stories full of gallows humour and “discussed his latest ideas for films with him, even asking him for ideas and was always open to new film ideas,” tells Lüthi-Graf.

their great love affair had grown and led to a life-long marriage and creative collaboration until Hitch’s death in 1981 at the age of 80. His wife died a year later, also in Bel Air, their place of residence for many years. One can only imagine what was going through their heads when as an elderly married couple half a century after their honeymoon they returned one last time to St. Moritz - or rather the “crime scene”, as the Master of Suspense perhaps would have named it.

Some believe that Hitchcock got the idea for one of his most sinister stories while at Badrutt’s. “Seemingly, it was his observation of a flock of Alpine choughs around the tower at Badrutt’s which gave him the idea for his groundbreaking film “The Birds” (according to https://amuse-i-d.vice.com/). “The birds come at a certain time of day, when the wind direction changes,” explains Richard Leuenbarger, General Manager of Badrutt’s. “This is almost a ritual.” Yet it might also be an urban legend: “The Birds”, Hitch’s terrifyingly technical tour de force with Tippi Hedren playing the leading role, was released in 1963. However, it was Daphne du Maurier - also author of the novels “Jamaica Inn” and “Rebecca”, which were filmed by Hitch - who put pen to paper for the short story “The Birds” more than a decade before the film version about our “friendly” feathered friends.

ching for miles shortly before arriving via the longest cypress avenue in the world. At the northern end of Maremma, on the old Via Aurelia, you turn left onto the five-kilometre-long avenue of cypresses lines with approx. 2,500 trees.

A heritage of 700 years of wine culture On arrival at the vineyard, there is a palpable aura of something very grand and unique. The ingredients of elegance, dedication, finesse, creativity and innovation are the keys to great wine culture. And there are the approx. 700 years or over 30 generations of the Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi dynasty. The family’s history goes back to the year 1300. In the 14th century, the Florentine noble family supplied many European rulers with wine, including the French court under Catherine de Medici and the English court under Henry VII. The Grand Duke of Tuscany also appreciated the quality of the Frescobaldi vintages. The first Cabernet vineyard was planted in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri in 1944. It was only after many years that it became apparent that international grape varieties perfectly matched the climate in Bolgheri, resulting in the Mediterranean interpretation of Cabernet and Merlot wines. With the creation of Ornellaia, Bolgheri’s reputation as a unique terroir spread across the world. Shortly afterwards, in 1994, the registered designation of origin was introduced.

An extraordinary microclimate on the coast The Ornellaia vineyard is located close to the sea. In addition to the abundant sunlight, the vineyards benefit from the light reflections on the surface of the sea and an extraordinary microclimate, which further reinforces the Mediterranean character of the wine.

In the summer, a cool sea breeze blows across the vineyard, favouring the slow ripening of the grapes resulting in the freshness of the wines. In the winter, the hills protect the vineyard from the cold north winds. Thanks to the high variability of the soils (seabed, alluvial soil or volcanic soil), there is a wide range of micro-terroirs in connection with the relief which form the basis for the wide variety of Ornellaia wines. This range of soils allows for the growing of very different grape varieties within their fairly unique requirements. The Ornellaia vineyard currently grows the following varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Manseng, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdichhio and Viognier. And each plot is worked by clearly-defined teams to ensure the continuity and experience of each individual crop, which is essential for the quality of Ornellaia wines.

Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia A real “Second Wine”, primarily comes from the young vines at the vineyard and is produced using the same dedication and attention to detail as Ornellaia. The wine is dark and the nose charmingly seduces with perfectly-matured red fruits and spices. It is full-bodied and indulges the palate with a variety of aromas and a wonderful velvety tannin structure.

Jack’s Brasserie, the trendy Sky Terrace and the only spa in the city of Bern are as much a part of Bern as the federal parliament building or the Bern Minster. Viel Prominenz hinter vornehmer Barockfassade Der Schweizerhof Bern prägt die Stadt seit 160 Jahren und ist eng mit ihrer Geschichte verbunden. Nach verschiedenen Besitzerwechseln und Erweiterungsbauten wurde der alte Schweizerhof 1911 abgebrochen und zwei Jahre später in der heutigen Architektur mit der vornehmen Barockfassade wiedereröffnet. Im Laufe der folgenden Jahre wechselte das Hotel mehrmals Direktion und Verwaltung, bis es 1939 von Jack Gauer übernommen wurde. Nun begannen die glanzvollsten Zeiten des Schweizerhofs. Jack und Anne-Marie Gauer machten aus dem Hotel ein erstklassiges Haus von internationalem Renommee. In den frühen 1950er Jahren begann erste Prominenz hier abzusteigen. Mit ihr kamen Glanz und Glamour in den Schweizerhof. Die Besitzer- und Direktionsfamilie Gauer – ab 1975 leitete Jack Gauers Sohn Jean-Jacques die Geschicke des Hotels – war berühmt für die Organisation von so manchen Feierlichkeiten, familieninterne Feste inklusive. So lagerten im hoteleigenen Weinkeller noch viele Jahre einige Dutzend Flaschen Hochzeitswein von der Trauung von Jack und Anne-Marie Gauer-Dubois im Jahr 1940.

Countless celebrities behind the elegant Baroque façade The Schweizerhof Bern has shaped the city for 160 years and is closely intertwined with its history. After various changes of ownership and extensions, the old Schweizerhof was demolished in 1911 and reopened two years later in today's architecture with the elegant Baroque façade. In the course of the following years, the hotel changed management and administration several times, until it was taken over by Jack Gauer in 1939. It was then that the most glamorous era of the Schweizerhof began. Jack and Anne-Marie Gauer turned the hotel

into a first-class establishment of international renown. In the early 1950s the first celebrities began to arrive. They brought glitz and glamour to the Schweizerhof. Liz Taylor, Grace Kelly, Ursula Andress, Ornella Mutti, Sophia Loren, Peter Ustinov and personalities such as Albert Schweitzer, former Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and Franz Josef Strauss as well as sporting gods such as Diego Maradona graced the Schweizerhof Bern, to name but a few. Festivities in the traditional ballroom, the Salon Trianon, also made the headlines. Today it still embodies – in its new splendour – the special ambiance of the Bernese luxury hotel. The owner and managing family Gauer – as of 1975 Jack Gauer’s son Jean-Jacques took charge of the hotel’s destiny – were famous for organising such celebrations, including family festivities. For instance, a few dozen bottles of wine from the wedding of Jack and Anne-Marie Gauer-Dubois in 1940 were stored for many years in the hotel's wine cellar.

Glamorous reopening The hotel was closed for major renovation works in 2005 and in 2008 it was bought by Katara Hospitality. THE SPA, the urban health resort in the hotel’s basement area, was opened in 2012 and in the same year the Schweizerhof was awarded the “Place to be” in Bern with its Sky Terrace. From then on, award after award followed. National and international media and organisations showered the Schweizerhof Bern with heaps of praise and countless prizes. Thrilled by the dynamism of this site The concept in the style of a pop-up restaurant, which was first launched in the 2017/18 winter season, clearly bears the signature of Tim Raue. Responsible for the implementation on site was his long-time sous-chef Lion Schirmer. Raue himself can frequently be encountered in the restaurant in person. Engadine and St. Moritz were not altogether unfamiliar to him either. “I have had the privilege of cooking twice at the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival. The dynamism of this place and its guests inspired me enormously. Culinary pleasure is an important aspect here. To now have the opportunity to realise a pop-up restaurant in Gault Millau’s Hotel of the Year 2018 is incredibly exciting for me,” says Tim Raue.

For this reason, bread, noodles, rice, white sugar and gluten are dispensed with. In addition, exclusively lactose-free milk products are used. “z Menu Vo Hie” – the local menu at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa The restaurant La Terrasse at the Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa in Interlaken spoils its guests with the new local menu. All products are sourced around Interlaken, no further than 40 kilometers from the hotel. By finding the products needed, Stefan Beer, met a lot of small producers. In order to guarantee for an extraordinary quality, he keeps a very personal relationship with all the producers. Their workplace and products inspired him to the “Menu Vo Hie” – the local menu. Stefan Beer and his team love to share these stories with his guests. They should feel the connection of the hotel with its surrounding and the stories behind the dishes and products. To round off the culinary experience, accompanying regional wines, selected by our Head Sommelier Daniela Wüthrich, are offered.

La Fromagerie – the cheese bunker of Gstaad It was a revolution locally - and a trendy pub - when no-one had thought about themed gastronomy. In 1975/76, Ernst Andrea Scherz, former well-travelled owner of the Gstaad Palace converted the bunker, which was used during the Second World War to get documents and gold to safety, into a fun and cheerful meeting place called “La Fromagerie”.

Perfect synergy between alpine feeling and the Grand Hotel style Just in time for the upcoming winter season, Kulm Hotel St. Moritz will present its 40 completely refurbished rooms and suites. Tying in with the latest room renovations in 2015, award-winning French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon is once again the creative mind behind the ongoing refurbishment. Several walls were moved to create spacious, modern feel-good areas with prime views on the remarkable Lake St. Moritz. What is lost in number of overall rooms is gained in comfort. While the rooms have a contemporary feeling, tradition has not been forgotten. Swiss stone pine wood, very typical for the Engadine region, is found in every room and makes for the typical timber aroma. Two new stars over the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz His aspiration is to tell stories, bring back old memories and create new ones: In July 2019, Sven Wassmer (holder of 2 Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points) will launch a new hospitality concept at the Grand Hotel Quellenhof in Bad Ragaz. The star chef and his wife, Amanda Bulgin, who, as sommelier, will be responsible for the wine offering at the Quellenhof, will start in January. The concept planned together with the young Fricktal native will replace the former Bel Air restaurant and will be divided into two units: a health-conscious lifestyle restaurant, which is open daily, and the signature restaurant of the two-star chef Sven Wassmer, which will be open five nights per week from July 2019, providing an informal atmosphere, with a show kitchen and a spectacular wine cellar. Sven Wassmer’s aim is always to inspire diners and gourmets in equal measure. He is unrivalled in his ability to passionately combine culinary treasures from the region with top ingredients from around the world. “I can hardly wait to shape the future of this tradition-rich resort with my identity”, enthuses the team-oriented chef about his new venture.

In late November each year, over 70,000 bright lights on Zurich’s tallest Christmas tree in the Baur au Lac park mark the start of the festive season. Just like every year, the tradition-rich establishment invites guests and Zurich natives to the Christmas Tree Lighting to enjoy mulled wine, punch and traditional Christmas cookies. They are entertained by live music from singer-songwriter Levin Deger and singer Nyssina, while the children get to meet Santa Claus and his helpers. From 1 to 30 December, the Baur au Lac will once again conjure up comfortable hospitality and a festive lodge atmosphere for guests in the Chalet au Lac, which is located in the hotel-owned park. Children can look forward to a family concert on 9 December in the Maag concert hall, a collaboration between the Zurich Youth Symphony Orchestra and various children's and youth choirs. In the spirit of the occasion, the children will be invited to the Baur au Lac for afternoon tea with hot chocolate and gingerbread. Into the heart of the skiing area with one push of a button With the hotel’s own mountain railway, guests of the Tschuggen Grand Hotel reach the skiing and hiking area Arosa Lenzerheide in just two and a half minutes. Since summer 2018, the ride with the “Tschuggen Express” is even more comfortable: the existing funicular has been completely renovated and features two new cabins.

Since 2009, guests of the Tschuggen Grand Hotel enjoy a unique offer: With the private funicular, which is operated by a push of a button, guests reach the skiing area Arosa Lenzerheide directly from the five-star-superior hotel. The “Tschuggen Express” requires less than two and a half minutes for the length of 536 meters and the 155 meter climb to the summit station. In summer 2018, the existing funicular was completely renovated and now features two round, horizontally level-regulated panorama cabins which allow for an impressive view over the surrounding mountain scenery. Of deep character An obsession with quality has been the hallmark of The Macallan since its founding by Alexander Reid in 1824 on a plateau above the river Spey in north-east Scotland. Now the new distillery started a new chapter in the evolution of this wonderful brand.

The undulating timber roof structure is one of the most complicated timber roof structures in the world. As a striking piece of contemporary architecture the new distillerie is cut into the slope of the land, taking its cues from ancient Scottish hills and maximising the aesthetic beauty of the building whilst minimising the visual impact on the Speyside landscape. The project was announced in 2012 and the first whisky ran through the stills in December last year.

18 Gault Millau-Punkte, 1 Michelin-Stern, Aufsteiger des Jahres: Franck Reynaud greift nach den Sternen. Seine Kochkünste locken Gourmet-Kenner aus der ganzen Welt nach Crans-Montana. Der gebürtige Franzose sucht ständig neue Herausforderungen – nicht nur in der Küche.

Franck Reynaud war noch keine 30, als er seinen ersten Guide-Michelin-Stern erhielt. Aktuell hat er sich bis zum 18. Gault Millau-Punkt hochgekocht und ist der Aufsteiger-Koch des Jahres in der Romandie – um nur einige seiner Auszeichnungen zu nennen. Franck jongliert mit Düften, zaubert mit Farben, überrascht mit Geschmäckern. Jeder Teller gleicht einem Kunstwerk. «Es ist einfach Kochen mit Liebe», sagt Franck dazu. «Ich will beim Gast Emotionen wecken.»

Viel freie Zeit ausserhalb der Küche hat der Star-Koch nicht. Aber wenn immer er kann, ist er in den Bergen unterwegs. Im Winter auf den Tourenski, im Sommer auf dem Mountainbike. «Die Ruhe, die Natur, gemeinsam mit einem Freund ein Ziel erreichen. Das gibt mir enorm viel.»

18 GaultMillau points, a Michelin star, Most Promising Chef of the Year: Franck Reynaud is reaching for the stars. His culinary expertise draws gourmet insiders from all over the world to Crans-Montana. The Frenchman is constantly on the lookout for new challenges – and not only in the kitchen.

Franck Reynaud received his first Michelin star before he was even 30. He has cooked his way up to 18 GaultMillau points and is the Most Promising Chef of the Year in French-speaking Switzerland – to mention just some of his awards.

Franck juggles with aromas, does magic with colours and wows his guests with the tastes he conjures up. Every plate is a piece of art. “It’s simply all about cooking with passion,” adds Franck. “I want to evoke my guests’ emotions.”

The Michelin star chef doesn’t get a lot of time off from the kitchen. But he’s in the mountains whenever he can. In winter on touring skis and in summer on his mountain bike. “The peace, nature and going somewhere with a friend.

That is really important to me.”

Es ist noch stockfinster, als Franck frühmorgens die Felle auf die Tourenski klebt. Zusammen mit seinem langjährigen Freund, dem einheimischen Bergführer Pierre-Olivier Bagnoud, marschiert er bergwärts. Die Dämmerung setzt ein. Die Sonne verfärbt Himmel und Bergketten in tausend Rottönen und durchflutet dann das Tal mit warmem Morgenlicht. «Solche Momente, die kannst du dir nicht kaufen», schwärmt Franck.

Auf der Cabane des Violettes leben Franck und Hüttenchef Pierre-Oliver ihren Traum einer perfekten Berghütte. Auf der Karte bodenständige Bergler-Kost.

Zubereitet mit dem gewissen Etwas von einem, der zuvor in Francks GourmetKüche gearbeitet hat. Und dazu natürlich einen feinen Tropfen aus dem Wallis.

It’s still pitch black when Franck attaches the climbing skins to his touring skis early in the morning. He sets off walking in the direction of the mountain with his old friend and local mountain guide Pierre-Olivier Bagnoud. The sun starts to rise and lights up the sky and mountains in a thousand hues of red, bathing the valley in warm morning light. “You can’t buy moments like these,” enthuses Franck.

In Cabane des Violettes, Franck and hut warden Pierre-Olivier live out their dream of working in a perfect mountain hut. Down-to-earth mountain-dwellers’ food is on the menu. Prepared with that certain je ne sais quoi by somebody who used to work in Franck’s gourmet kitchen. And accompanied of course by a fine drop of Valais wine.

Nemo aus Biel und Dani aus El Salvador verbindet eines: Die Musik! Beim Besuch mit dem SCHWEIZERISCHEN ROTEN KREUZ in Zentralamerika entsteht eine besondere Freundschaft.

The same passion for music unites Nemo from Bienne, Switzerland and Dani from San Salvador. The two musicians have forged a wonderful friendship during the visit of the SWISS RED CROSS to El Salvador.

Ein erfolgreicher Musiker zu werden – das ist der grösste Traum von Daniel Lopez, 22. Schon als kleiner Junge läuft Dani mit Kopfhörern durch Ciudad Delgado, ein Armenquartier in El Salvadors Hauptstadt, und hört Rap-Musik. Später komponiert er in der Einzimmer- Wellblechhütte, die er mit seiner 86-jährigen Grossmutter und sieben weiteren Verwandten teilt, auf einem alten Laptop Beats und Songtexte.

Daniel Lopez, 22, dreams of a music career, and was listening to rap from a very young age. He later created his own rhythms and writes lyrics in his hut, built with corrugated sheets of iron. A one-room dwelling he shares with his 86-year-old grandmother and seven other members of his family in Ciudad Delgado, a poor ghetto in the capital of El Salvador.

Voller Stolz präsentiert er diese heute Nemo Mettler, 19. Der Musiker aus Biel hat in der Schweiz das geschafft, wovon Dani träumt: Er räumte vier Schweizer Musik Awards ab, stand mit seinem Song «Du» auf Platz 4 der Schweizer Charts. «Wovon handeln deine Texte?», will Nemo von Dani wissen. «Vom Leben in der Stadt, von Gewalt und Drogen, aber auch von Liebe», sagt er, spielt ihm einen Beat vor und beginnt zu rappen. Nemo nickt mit dem Kopf zum Takt. Im Song spricht Dani über drei seiner Freunde, die nicht mehr am Leben sind.

Not without a sense of pride he’s now showing his compositions to Nemo Mettler, the young 19-year-old rapper from Bienne has become famous in Switzerland. Nemo shared the same dream with Dani, which he recently achieved by winning four Swiss Music Awards and his song “Du” made it into the top 10 of the Swiss charts. Even if the pair don’t speak the same language, through the translator they can understand the passion for music that binds them. “What are your words about?” Nemo asks Dani. “Life in the city, violence, drugs, but also love”, says Dani while playing some beats he starts rapping over. Nemo moves his head to the rhythm. In this piece, Dani describes three friends he has lost; “the first died from an overdose, the second had an accident and the third was shot.”

Impressed At home, Daniel Lopez plays some of his songs to Nemo: “You’re really talented”, the Swiss musician assures him.

Skilled The SRC enabled Jairo Franco to further his skill in mechanics. Previously he had no training and no job.

El Salvadors Hauptstadt San Salvador gehört zu den gefährlichsten Orten der Welt. Pro Nacht werden im Schnitt zehn Menschen umgebracht. Im ganzen Land, das gerade mal halb so gross ist wie die Schweiz, regieren die Gangs, Maras genannt, und terrorisieren die Menschen.

San Salvador is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, with an average of ten homicides every night. In a country half the size of Switzerland, gangs make the law and terrorise the population.

In El Salvador sind ein Viertel der Jugendlichen sogenannte «ni trabajan», «ni estudian» – sie haben weder einen Job noch Schule. Zu gefährlich ist der Wechsel in die Oberstufe, weil diese in einem Quartier einer anderen Gang liegt, zu wenig Chancen geben Arbeitgeber den Jugendlichen aus den Armenvierteln. Das SRK unterstützt deshalb Projekte zur Verbesserung der individuellen Lebensperspektiven – etwa Bildungsangebote, die Jugendliche nutzen können. In der Hauptstadt San Salvador sind es 3'400 Jugendliche, die davon profitieren.

«Mit meinen Songs möchte ich aufzeigen, wie schwierig das Leben für die Jungen in El Salvador ist», erklärt Dani. Seine Mutter starb, als er noch jung war. «Und mein Vater war kein Vorbild.» Mit 12 Jahren bricht er die Schule ab, verkauft auf der Strasse alte Handys und andere Elektrogeräte. «Niemand interessierte sich für meine Zukunft.» Für die Maras sind Jugendliche wie Dani leichte Beute. Sie preisen sich als Ersatzfamilie an, zwingen die Jugendlichen aber bald zur Arbeit.

Als das Schweizerische Rote Kreuz vor drei Jahren in seinem Quartier zu arbeiten anfängt, sieht er seine Chance. Zusammen mit Freunden und der Unterstützung des SRK baut er einen Spielplatz im Quartier auf. «Vorher gab es hier nichts, die Kinder sassen nur zu Hause rum.» Durch die Projekte kommt Dani mit Leuten in Kontakt, die an ihn glauben. «Das veränderte mein Leben radikal.» Er findet wieder Anschluss an die Schule. Heute macht er eine Ausbildung zum Pflegefachangestellten. Danach möchte er studieren. «Die Musik bleibt aber mein grösster Traum!»

Mit seiner Freundin Janida, die im Krankenhaus arbeitet, zieht er seinen vier Monate alten Sohn gross. „Ich möchte, dass es mein Sohn einmal besser hat“, erklärt der junge Papa.

A quarter of young people in El Salvador are “ninis - ni trabajan, ni estudian”; neither working nor studying. On the one hand it’s too dangerous to go from compulsory school to the high school if the latter is located in a rival gang’s territory and, on the other, employers offer few opportunities to young people from poor neighbourhoods. To remedy this situation, the SRC (Swiss Red Cross) is supporting projects to improve the future prospects of young people by providing training opportunities. 3,400 youngsters in San Salvador have benefited from these programmes.

“My songs reflect the difficulties young people face in El Salvador,” says Dani. His mother died when he was a child and he adds: “My father was hardly a role model.” Dani left school at 12 years old and sold mobile phones and other electrical devices on the street: "Nobody cared about my future.”

Young people like Dani are dream prey for gangs, the maras, who initially act as surrogate families before proceeding to exploit them for their criminal acts.

He seized his chance three years ago when the Swiss Red Cross started working in Dani’s district and built a playground with his friends and the support of the Swiss Red Cross. This project enabled Dani to meet people who believed in him: “My life then changed radically.” He started attending school again and is now training to be a caregiver. He would then like to pursue his studies with “music as my biggest dream”. He’s bringing up his 4-month-old baby with his partner, Janida, who works at the hospital.

“I want my son to have better opportunities than I did,” says the young dad.

After career stages in Switzerland, Europe and Asia, she worked for the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in Basel from 2005 to 2009. Subsequently, Tanja Wegmann was employed in management functions for well-known luxury goods brands for six years. Tanja Wegmann was born in Basel, graduated from the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne and holds an MBA from Henley Management College in Oxfordshire, England.

Warum haben Sie sich für einen Beruf in der Hotellerie entschieden?

Nach meinem Abitur stand ich vor einer wichtigen beruflichen Entscheidung: ein Psychologie-Studium, Innenarchitektur oder die Hotelfachschule. Mein Grossvater, ein ehemaliger grosser Unternehmer und für mich ein sehr wichtiger Mensch, hielt keinen der drei Wege für den richtigen. Trotzdem entschied ich mich für die Hotellerie und besuchte die Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne.

Why did you decide to work in the hotel industry?

After my maturity diploma I was faced with an important professional decision: a degree in psychology, interior design or hotel management school. My grandfather, formerly a great businessman and a very important person in my life, believed none of the three pathways was the right one. Nevertheless, I opted for the hotel industry pathway and visited the Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne.

Was bedeutet für Sie exzellenter Service?

Eine Kombination von Professionalität und Leidenschaft. Wobei das eine ohne das andere grundsätzlich nicht funktioniert. Diese Qualität ist nur dann gewährleistet, wenn die richtigen Mitarbeitenden die geeigneten Positionen im Unternehmen besetzen und ein abteilungsübergreifender Teamspirit vorherrscht. Jeder Mitarbeitende muss die Extrameile für den Gast gehen und sein Bestes geben, das Unmögliche möglich machen. Dann darf auch mal ein Fehler passieren. Wir sind uns der Verantwortung und Verpflichtung eines 5-Sterne-Hotels bewusst und mein Credo dazu lautet: Es gibt keine Probleme, es gibt nur Lösungen.

What does excellent service mean to you?

A combination of professionalism and passion. Whereby one without the other fundamentally does not work. This quality can only be ensured if the right employees occupy the appropriate positions in the company and a team spirit prevails across all departments. Every employee has to go the extra mile for the guest and do his best to make the impossible possible. Mistakes are sometimes made, because we are only human, yet we are fully aware of the responsibility and requirements of a 5-star hotel. My firm belief is: There are no problems, only solutions.

Welche Ihrer Erfahrungen hat Sie im Laufe Ihrer Karriere am meisten geprägt?

Die Hotelfachschule in Lausanne, meine Corporate «Fast Track» ManagementAusbildung bei Intercontinental Hotels sowie mein MBA-Studium. Die Eröffnung des Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois im 2006 und die Übernahme als Hotel General Manager kurz danach ist bestimmt eines meiner Highlights – es war so etwas wie «Liebe auf den ersten Blick»! Umso glücklicher bin ich, nach neun Jahren im Retail der Luxusgüter-Branche, wieder als Hoteldirektorin ins Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois zurückzukommen; in ein geschichtsträchtiges Haus, in dem wir unseren Slogan «Rich in history, young in heart» leben und mit immer neuen Projekten vorantreiben.

Which of your experiences has influenced you most during your career?

The hotel management school in Lausanne and my corporate “fast track” management training at Intercontinental Hotels as well as my MBA studies. The opening of the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois in 2006 and becoming Hotel General Manager shortly thereafter is certainly one of my biggest highlights. This hotel was something like “love at first sight”. I am all the more overjoyed to return to the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois as Hotel Director after spending nine years in the retail of luxury goods; to a hotel steeped in history where we live by our slogan “rich in history, young at heart” and press ahead ever new projects.

Welche Prinzipien und Werte möchten Sie jüngeren Mitarbeitenden mit auf den Weg geben?

Die Leidenschaft für die Hotellerie ist das Wichtigste. Als junger Mensch muss man früh Entscheidungen treffen und die Unsicherheit, ob man beruflich den richtigen Weg wählt, begleitet fast jeden. Grundsätzlich gilt für mich: Wer mehr als andere leistet, kommt im Leben weiter. Und wer authentisch bleibt und ehrlich ist, der erntet Sympathien vom Vorgesetzten, den Gästen, den Berufskollegen und im privaten Umfeld.

What principles and values do you want to pass on to younger employees?

Passion for the hotel industry is the most important thing. As a young person, you have to make decisions early and almost everyone is faced with uncertainty when it comes to choosing the right professional pathway. In principle, the following goes for me: Those who achieve more than others will get further in life. And those who remain authentic and honest reap the benefits of affection, from superiors, guests, as well as professional colleagues and privately.

In welchem Land oder in welcher Stadt würden Sie gerne mal ein Hotel führen?

Ich durfte schon in einigen spannenden Weltstädten arbeiten, ein Grund, weshalb ich die Schweiz heute sehr schätze. Vielleicht zieht es mich im Alter einmal ans Meer, wo ich dann aber eher das «dolce far niente» geniessen möchte.

In which country or city would you like to run a hotel?

I have already had the opportunity to work in some exciting cities around the world. This is one reason why I have great appreciation for Switzerland now.

Perhaps I'll be drawn to the ocean when I'm older, where I can more easily enjoy the “dolce far niente” (sweet idleness).

Welche Entwicklung wird die Luxushotellerie in Zukunft am stärksten beeinflussen?

Die Mobilität und die Entscheidungsfreudigkeit der Gäste sind stark gewachsen.

Heute entscheidet der Gast spontan und Social Media trägt immer mehr zur Entscheidungsfindung bei. Wir Hoteliers müssen schneller, flexibler und spontaner werden und trotzdem in jeder Situation Höchstleistungen erbringen.

Ausserdem gibt es die Themen Digitalisierung und «emotional intelligence».

Wir integrieren diese, wo sie Sinn machen und versuchen gleichzeitig unsere Herzlichkeit und den persönlichen Umgang mit dem Gast zu erhalten oder sogar noch weiter zu fördern. Daneben gibt es für uns im Moment noch die beiden Themen Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit auf allen Ebenen.

What development will have the greatest impact on the luxury hotel industry in the future?

The mobility and decision-making of guests has changed a lot. The guest of today spontaneously decides where to go and in the future, social media will certainly influence such decisions even more. Hoteliers have to be faster, more flexible, more spontaneous and yet deliver top-class service in every situation. There’s also digitisation and “emotional intelligence” and we are constantly working to integrate them into our hotel operations wherever it makes good sense. But it must never be at the expense of cordiality and personalisation vis-à-vis guests.

There are two further important and current topic areas that currently occupy us a great deal: sustainability and security at all levels.

Was ist Ihr persönlicher Tipp, um die schöne Stadt Basel und deren Region zu entdecken?

Die Stadt Basel hat mit dem Dreiländereck viel zu bieten und gilt als «kulturelle Hauptstadt» der Schweiz. Der perfekte Aufenthalt in Basel sieht für mich so aus: Nach einem köstlichen Frühstück mit Rheinblick im Les Trois Rois besuchen Sie eines der weltberühmten Museen, wie zum Beispiel die Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, das Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein oder das Museum Tinguely in der Basler Innenstadt. Auf dem Rückweg steigen Sie in Kleinbasel aus dem Tram und überqueren den Rhein mit der legendären Baseler Fähre bis zur Pfalz. Von dort spazieren Sie gemütlich vom Münsterplatz zurück ins Hotel.

What is your personal tip for discovering the beautiful city of Basel and its region?

The city of Basel has much to offer with its border triangle and today is the “cultural capital” of Switzerland. For me the perfect stay in Basel looks like this: After a delicious breakfast overlooking the Rhine here at Les Trois Rois, enjoy a visit to one of the world-famous museums, such as the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, or the Tinguely Museum in Basel's city centre. On the way back alight from the tram in Kleinbasel and cross the Rhine on the legendary Basel ferry to the Pfalz. From there, take a leisurely stroll from Münsterplatz back to the hotel.

Für den Nachmittag sollten – je nach Saison – ein Besuch der Herbstmesse oder des Weihnachtsmarkts auf dem Programm stehen. Alternativ bietet Basel zahlreiche Standrundgänge an, wie zum Beispiel eine Urbane Art Tour. Am Abend geniessen Sie einen Aperitif vor unserem gemütlichen Kaminfeuer und schliessen den erlebnisreichen Tag mit einem Menu des Rois in unserem 3-Sterne Michelin Restaurant Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl ab.

Depending on the season, a visit to the Autumn Fair or the Christmas Market should definitely be on the programme. Alternatively, Basel offers a range of city tours, such as the urban art tour. In the evening, enjoy an aperitif in front of our cosy log fire and conclude the eventful day with a Menu des Rois in our 3 Michelin-starred restaurant Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl.
